Linda J Ging, born in 1941 in Hutchinson, Kansas, is an American transcendentalist who has worked in quiet obscurity for nearly thirty years. Her paintings, rooted in the immense spaces and changing skies of rural Kansas, are not landscapes. They are not about things. They are dust, astral dust. Linda Ging rigorously eradicates all suggestions of place, material existence, and especially her own presence. She brushes on color washes in scores of translucent layers with a touch so light as to seem uncanny. She never arrives at opacity. Some suspect the use of an airbrush. The suggestion is as preposterous to her as using the wings of insects.Her mature work pushes abstraction beyond Abstract Expressionism's cult of personality, beyond the geometry of Rothko's shimmering squares. Roxanne Swentzell
The fourth title in New Mexico Magazine's Artist Series showcases the work of Roxanne Swentzell, one of the most intriguing and acclaimed contemporary sculptors in the Southwest. Roxanne was born in 1962, the daughter of Rina Swentzell, a potter, architect, writer, and scholar from Santa Clara Pueblo, and Ralph Swentzell, a New Jersey-born philosophy professor at St. John's College in Santa Fe. For her last two years of high school Roxanne attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, where she was given the first exhibition of her clay figures. Later she studied at the Portland Museum Art School in Oregon. Today Roxanne's work, much of which is also produced in bronze limited editions, is collected internationally. It has earned numerous honors, including many first place and best of class awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market. One result of this instability was that many religious practices moved from the church to the home, and the retablo art form--sacred paintings on tin--flourished.With over 1,700 objects, New Mexico State University holds the largest collection of retablos of any museum in the United States. Eleven eminent Latin Americanists from the U.S. and Mexico have studied this collection and placed it in a broad cultural context. They have looked at the retablos from the standpoint of art history, history, anthropology, folk art, and religion to bring a new understanding of and appreciation for these paintings. This interdisciplinary approach brings together multiple influences in considering, for example, Baroque images as popular icons, Aztec gods and home altars, popular images in nineteenth-century Mexico, European and viceregal paintings, and bultos and santos from New Mexico. The richly varied retablo tradition continues to the present, making this volume a much-needed addition to the literature on the complex society that formed along the Camino Real between Mexico City and Santa Fe.In addition to the essays, the book includes restoration philosophy and conservation methods, a glossary, chronology, maps, and a comprehensive section on the art and iconography of each object in the Art Gallery collection.

In this study of four Argentine artists who helped make up Los Artistas del Pueblo (The People's Artists), Patrick Frank examines social realism in that country's art. He contends their work constituted the first movement of social realism in Latin American art. Los Artistas del Pueblo includes art history as well as the historical context in which the group worked. In Argentina, the years 1912 to 1930 are generally regarded as a "Golden Age," when the country was among the world's most developed. Yet Los Artistas saw many gaps: poor working conditions, restrictive labor legislation, dilapidated housing, and disenfranchised immigrants who made up half of the capital city's population. The artists shunned the formal circuit of galleries, preferring to show their solidarity with the workers through displays of protest art in union halls, community centers, and Socialist party libraries. Their prints were intended to stir sympathy for the less fortunate and to motivate workers themselves to action.Frank places a major focus on how the movement began and how their rejection of modern art was based in their conviction that the function of art was to speak directly to the masses, emotionally and politically.

TENET was not so much written as channeled from analog alien transmissions (namely the "10-itus" in the receiver's otherwise deaf right ear) + digitally decrypted + typed by the author's 10 digits in the year 2025, where 2025 "equills" the sum of 10 digits squared, (0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9) ? (0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9). As the matrices cycle in 10 increments of 10, they "decim8 + disentegr8 in2" recursive feedback loops, decomposing into a sort of tactile braille "in-10-ded 2 B red" in multiple directions as if the eyes were tentacular digits stereophonically projecting through the page to render its own interpretation.

Maud Stevens Wagner
Maud Stevens Wagner, the "Mona Lisa of American tattoo," was an ardent individualist who left home at a young age to pursue a career as a carnival performer, a contortionist, a tattoo model, and an aerialist. She was a thoroughly modern woman who asserted her independence and her own identity. Maud and her husband, Gus (known as the "most artistically marked-up man in America"), traveled the country as the Wagner's Traveling Museum, exhibiting themselves and making tattoos around the US. This book is the second in the series Last of the Hand Tattoo Artists, detailing the lives of Gus, Maud, and their daughter, Lotteva. Author Alan Govenar brings you Maud's story with - Lotteva Wagner's oral history, - clippings and photographs from Gus Wagner's scrapbooks, - the Wagners' tattoo flash, and - newspaper articles and obituaries. As the author said, "In one sense, Gus and Maud challenged all expectations, but in another, they embodied and celebrated the can-do spirit intrinsic to American life."
Kaj - A Collection
Kaj Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark in 1932. He was a remarkable figure who excelled both as a footballer and a celebrated artist. His early professional years were marked by a passion for both sports and the arts, leading him to pursue a dual career. On the football field, Kaj was known for his skilful play and leadership, as team captain for 'B1913 Odense', earning him a place in Denmark's national team during 1963. Unfortunately whilst visiting Hungary for a game, Kaj contracted Tuberculosis and spent 9 months in hospital after which he was no longer able to play at the international level. Off the field, his artistic prowess shone through his vibrant paintings, characterised by bold strokes and vivid colours in layered oil abstract pieces amongst others. Over his lifetime, Kaj Andersen created and sold many hundreds of pieces of work before his sudden death whilst playing football for the old boys in 1995 at the age of just 62.--Kaj Andersen blev f繪dt i Odense, Danmark i 1932. There's something odd about twin-lens reflex (TLR) film cameras, but very appealing. I can't really explain it. TLR cameras are bulky, awkward to use and, well, kind-of weird. Still, I love picking one up and taking it out to shoot. Mamiya TLRs comprise a rare line of TLR cameras in that they were the only pro TLR cameras that had interchangeable lenses other than Contaflex. That fact alone made me long for one a long time. When I bought my Yashica Mat EM, there were Mamiya TLR cameras available, but usually at two to three times the cost. Like the other medium-format (MF) cameras - Hasselblad, Bronica, Pentax, etc. - the Mamiyas were far out of reach. That is until around 2003 when photographers were ditching their film cameras, and selling them cheap. They may not be as cheap now, but they're still worth the prices. As I said, shooting with a TLR is an odd experience, but one definitely worth experiencing.

Death, Disease and Mystical Experience in Early Modern Art
Fear of death and disease preoccupied the European consciousness throughout the early modern era, becoming most acute at times of plague and epidemics. In these times of heightened anxieties, images of saints and protectors served to reassure the faithful of their religious protection against infection. Modes of visual engagement and devotional subject matter were coupled in new ways to reinforce the emotive impact of art works and to reaffirm the perceived reality of the afterlife. In this context, a visual language of mystical devotion, which overcame the limits of the body and even eroticised its suffering, could serve the needs of the desolate and the pained. In this series of essays focused on spiritual sensibilities in Renaissance art and its legacies, authors present original ideas about the themes of death, disease, and mystical experience, based primarily on the study of objects and their documented historical contexts. Methodologically wide-ranging in approach, the resulting volume provides novel insights into the interplay between suffering and art making in the Western world.
Hospital Aesthetics
In Hospital aesthetics, Amanda Cachia introduces a broad array of contemporary artists who are engaging in relational aesthetic activism and socially engaged art practice. She analyzes practices in which artists are taking health and care into their own hands by making works that engage with the ever-subjective experience of being sick and ill. The first truly comprehensive monograph in critical disability studies to be grounded in a deep and scholarly understanding of modern and contemporary art practice, this work presents hospital aesthetics as a decolonizing gesture, wherein contemporary artists go against the tendency for the medical industrial complex to treat disabled bodies as specimens and, eventually, archives. Cachia aims to codify "hospitable aesthetics" as a category or genre of disability art that is more relevant now than ever before, as increasing numbers of artists turn to the hospital or doctor's office as a canvas, literally and symbolically.
