Black Artists in Their Own Words
The first book to center Black artists' voices on Black aesthetics, revealing a century of evolving relationships to race, identity, and art. What is Black art? No one has thought harder about that question than Black artists, yet their perspectives have been largely ignored. Instead, their stories have been told by intellectuals like W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke, who defined "a school" of Black art in the early twentieth century. For the first time, Black Artists in Their Own Words offers an insightful corrective. Esteemed art historian Lisa Farrington gathers writing spanning a century across the United States, the Caribbean, and the African continent--including from renowned artists Henry Tanner, Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, Romare Bearden, Wifredo Lam, Renee Cox, and many more--that reveals both evolutions and equivocations. Many artists, especially during the civil rights era, have embraced Black aesthetics as a source of empowerment. Others prefer to be artists first and Black second, while some have rejected racial identification entirely. Here, Black artists reclaim their work from reductive critical narratives, sharing the motivations underlying their struggles to create in a white-dominated art world.

Women of Color and Accomplishment Fighting for Equality
A powerful visual and historical tribute to overlooked African American women who shaped the fight for freedom and justice. This second volume in the Women of Color and Accomplishment series continues artist Carol Jacobsen's mission to honor African American women who have long been ignored by traditional history books. Through richly painted portraits and compelling short biographies, this book brings to light the stories of women who played pivotal roles in the struggle for equality-yet remain in the shadows of mainstream historical narratives.Inspired by deep research into African American history, Jacobsen's portraits feature women from the past whose courage, intelligence, and perseverance made lasting contributions to their communities and to the nation's progress. From those who fought for civil rights and resisted segregation to educators, journalists, and political pioneers, each woman is presented with dignity, respect, and a compelling narrative that reveals the obstacles she overcame.Set against the backdrop of key historical moments-beginning with the arrival of enslaved Africans in 1619 and spanning the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the rise of Jim Crow laws-this book provides important context for understanding the immense challenges these women faced. Despite discrimination and erasure, they found ways to lead, serve, and inspire. These pages showcase women who refused to perform for segregated audiences, fought for equal laws, educated the next generation, and used their voices to spread truth through journalism. Their stories deserve to be told, and their legacies deserve recognition.Printed in deluxe color and featuring original portrait art, Women of Color and Accomplishment: Fighting for Equality is both a celebration and a call to remembrance. It is ideal for readers of all ages who are interested in African American history, women's history, and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.
Vision and Design
Vision and Design by Roger Fry is a landmark collection of essays that transformed the landscape of art criticism and shaped the understanding of modern art in the twentieth century. First published in 1920, this influential volume brings together Fry's pioneering thoughts on aesthetics, visual perception, and the principles of design, establishing him as a leading voice in the post impressionism movement. Fry's essays explore the foundations of artistic vision, analyzing how artists from different periods and cultures approached the problems of form, color, and composition. He investigates the evolution of visual perception, arguing that the value of art lies not in narrative or imitation but in the arrangement of visual elements that evoke emotional and intellectual responses. Through clear and incisive prose, Fry challenges traditional views and champions the innovations of modern art, from C矇zanne and Matisse to the abstract experiments of his contemporaries. The book covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between Western and non Western art, the role of design theory, and the significance of artistic intention. Fry's analysis of post impressionism is particularly notable, as he articulates the movement's break from realism and its focus on subjective experience. His essays encourage readers to look beyond surface appearances and engage with the deeper structures that give art its power. Vision and Design remains essential reading for anyone interested in art history, aesthetics, and the ongoing debates about the purpose and meaning of art. Fry's insights into artistic vision and his advocacy for modern art continue to influence critics, artists, and students, making this collection a cornerstone of art theory and criticism.
Sea Change
While much has been written about the 19th century as a watershed period of curiosity, discovery, and reform, specific comparisons among the fine arts and mathematics have rarely been investigated. Sea Change brings to light connections and individual contributions that eventually led to new paradigms of abstraction, later identified as indicators of modernism. For instance, the mathematician Carl Gauss anticipated the aesthetic herald of "art for art's sake" by nearly one hundred years when he declared that "there are sciences whose study is not encouraged by the prospect of benefits to physical existence," but, rather, by "a pure, disinterested study in joy." Through examples from architecture, painting, geometry, and literature, presented as a network of layered imagery and text, the reader will come to realize that the term "sea change" refers not only to cultural revolutions, but also to shifting viewpoints about the supposed constancy of Nature, as seen in the work of formerly unacknowledged partners from the arts and sciences.
Public Image Library
NYC Restaurant Ads, 1981-1998 is the first archival project by Nikki Igol's Public Image Library, published in collaboration with Blurring Books. Drawn from the Public Image Library's print archive, the book documents the evolution of the Manhattan dining scene, as presented in the advertising section of magazines such as Interview, Paper, and Details. This visual archive captures both the evolution of culinary discovery and graphic design as the finicky New York diner, always in search of the "it" spot, discovers the cuisines of the world and the neighborhoods of Manhattan. Restaurants are an ephemeral expression of culture; these advertisements document the ever-evolving New York taste.
The Art of Kaylene Whiskey
Kaylene Whiskey (b. 1976) creates dazzling paintings with brightly colored pop stars rendered in dots and set among her own community in remote Central Australia. She depicts female pop culture icons---including Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Catwoman, Cher, and Wonder Woman---woven into the Kungkarangkalpa Tjukurpa, or Seven Sisters Story. These heroines, however, are shown partying at Iwantja Arts, where Whiskey works in Indulkana, South Australia. Her journal--doodle style---laden with text bubbles, hearts, and rainbows--delivers lighthearted humor while channeling potent symbols of female power in an Aboriginal setting. A visual anthem to the admiration of American media felt by adolescents in her community, Whiskey's work draws from the country music, rock 'n' roll, and Anangu songs played in her household growing up. Reflections and interview excerpts punctuate the richly illustrated pages in which Whiskey describes her conceptual process--blending Anangu traditions with contemporary culture by painting jugs of Coca--Cola, alongside mingkulpa (native tobacco plants), lollipops, honey ants, and other childhood emblems. The first monograph on the artist, The Art of Kaylene Whiskey, features a survey by renowned curator Natalie King and an in-depth interview with the artist, in her own words. Featuring a lenticular cover and colorfully designed throughout, the volume also includes contributions from notable creatives Taika Waititi, Jazz Money, Zo矇 Whitley, Clothilde Bullen, and April Phillips.
On Censorship
Ai Weiwei is one of contemporary art's greatest practitioners. He has been a voice for artistic and personal freedom of expression for decades within his native China and around the world. This publication offers a compelling exploration of censorship and self--censorship. Drawing on his personal experiences and advocacy for human rights, Ai Weiwei provides a uniquely informed perspective. He examines how censorship persists in authoritarian regimes as well as subtly within democratic frameworks, corporate power, the arts, and social media, arguing that its concealed and pervasive nature poses a significant threat to genuine expression. This thought--provoking work by a singular voice invites readers to critically reconsider power, ideology, and the boundaries of free speech.
The Prado Masterpieces
The Museo Nacional del Prado, Spain's national art museum, houses one of the world's finest collections of European art, and is unquestionably the best single collection of Spanish art. This compact volume serves as the definitive and most up--to-date reference to the Prado, published by the museum itself. It presents the globally renowned collection in chronological order, from Roman statues to nineteenth century anti--war paintings, guided by the tastes of the Spanish royal family to recount the evolution of Western art. The Prado's most seminal works are showcased in sections on notable painters and themes of still life, portraits, and religious painting, including Vel獺zquez Las Meninas, El Greco's The Nobleman with his Hand on his Chest, and Goya's The Third of May 1808.This book creates a fascinating dialogue between the greatest artists and their works, conveying how painters have always reflected the influences of their predecessors and peers. An indispensable resource for anyone passionate about art history, it is a richly illustrated record of one of the world's greatest collections of European art.
The End of the Museum
This provocative book challenges frequently voiced assertions regarding museums as necessary and valued modern institutions. It raises fundamental, existential questions about contemporary museums as products of the modern colonial world order.Drawing on practical examples of collecting and exhibiting, theoretical research, and critique from diverse countries across the globe, including Chile, India, Korea, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Palestine, Portugal, Sri Lanka and the United States, this book moves beyond the conventional Eurocentric museological framework. This book synthesizes contemporary critiques of museums, while arguing that societies need the sociocultural examinations that museums are capable of facilitating and that radical transformations of "the museum" are fraught with difficulty, but also possible and necessary. Ultimately, Coffee argues that museums can only be future orientated if they are transformed into agents of social justice and inclusion, divestors of illicit collections, and proponents of a liberatory ethic, opposing neo-colonialism in all of its forms. During that transformative process, as this book demonstrates, museum practice and museum theory must also be transformed. The End of the Museum: Culture, Colonialism, and Liberation will appeal to students, researchers, and practitioners interested in a critical examination of museum work and theory.

Portrait of Sarah
Portrait of Sarah is the story of the relationship between Jules Bastien-Lepage and Sarah Bernhardt in the four months of the creation of the famous oil painting portrait by Jules. A story underpinned by interpersonal tensions, technical difficulties and an extremely cold winter in Paris, France. The two find themselves progressively bound together in their past, present and future. The lives of two committed artists and their respective objectives are strung out across almost sixty days of sittings. The seriousness of the endeavour is interspersed with often quite comic events that enhance the reputation of both artists.

Art in Orbit
What role do the visual arts play in the emerging commercial spaceflight industry, and vice versa? This book considers the relationship between art practice and space science, presenting new methodologies for art-sci collaboration informed by non-terrestrial contexts. Regarded widely as an irreverent luxury accessible to only a select few, commercial space exploration seems an unlikely setting for contemporary art practice. However, faced with the inevitability of this developing industry and the new environments it presents, a new field of creative practice is emerging. In Art in Orbit design theorist Barbara Brownie argues that these new environments offer novel opportunities that are yet to be fully recognized by the creative industries. Throughout the book, Brownie explores the contexts, questions, challenges and opportunities for creative exploration of form, materials, and the body, in space. Drawing on original research in the STEAM subjects, the book highlights how artists, engineers, and theorists have begun working in close collaboration to reconsider practices that have been taken for granted throughout the history of art practice, demonstrating how ideas about orientation, weight, balance, and the familiar behaviours of art and craft materials are all radically altered in the microgravity of orbital space. The research presented is supplemented by 9 original case studies from sculpture, craft, performance, and land art, together with exclusive interviews with artists who have produced work for space. Taking an original, critical approach to the spaceflight sector, Art in Orbit sets out to define a new field of artistic practice and the real-world impact of art-sci collaboration. It provides a template for developing new narrative strategies for space projects which will engage artists, scientists, and collaborative teams from across disciplines.
