Time and the Everyday in Slow Cinema
Time and the Everyday in Slow Cinema examines the phenomenon of Slow cinema, a style defined by its lingering focus on quotidian activities and extended durations. Rosa Barotsi argues that while the style emerges from a tradition of durational filmmaking and resonates with movements advocating for deceleration, it is also deeply entangled in the structures of late capitalism, creating a dynamic tension between radicalism and conservatism. This book situates the trend between artistic innovation and institutional commodification, ultimately raising critical questions about spectatorship, cinematic time, and the politics of cultural value.
Festival Emblems
In early modern culture, civic festivals and emblem books were amongst the more privileged genres of Early Modern culture. Although both are connected in their use of word and image, they are nonetheless separated in their very essence. The former, a public event celebrated usually at night and involving, alongside ephemeral monuments, lights, fireworks, music, ceremonies, and theater performances, was for the spectator an all-encompassing experience. It was intended to propagate either the ruler or the city's political agenda. The latter was conceived as an intellectual pastime and intended to be read, deciphered, and discussed within the private sphere, in the company and studious ambiance of the literati. Emblems and festivals, nonetheless, maintained a kind of symbiotic exchange. Whereas public monuments of the triumphal entries found their way into the printed form of festival books, emblems migrated from their printed form into the public sphere, where they were used to adorn the ephemeral monuments of the triumphal entries. How then, do the practices of emblem reading, which require careful decryption of words and images, relate to the viewing practices of triumphal processions? The book examines this paradox and argues that the inclusion of emblems in festivals reveals the hermeneutic mechanism of the learned. By using emblems, the designers of civic festivals marked their territory within the power hierarchies and established their dignity and authority as experts in both the civic and intellectual circles. In the festival ambit, festival emblems epitomize the perfect paradoxical union of persuasion and erudition.
Creation and Creativity in Medieval Art
Creation imagery in manuscripts made in the Middle Ages became a locus for visual experimentation as well as the expression of ideas about creativity. By examining representations of divine creation and illustrations of the creation stories in Genesis, this book links medieval ideas about creation, the characteristic of the Divine Creator, and the act of creation with themes in medieval thought about the work of medieval artists., Case studies from manuscripts illuminating the creation dating from the eleventh to the fourteenth century (Junius 11/The C疆dmon Manuscript, Roda Bible & Ripoll Bible, Bible moralis矇es, Hamburg Bible, Holkhalm Bible) reveal self-reflective moments; where medieval artists relate artistic invention and theological debates about creation. This book traces the artists' thinking in their own work and then contextualizes those visual cues within the context of philosophical arguments about the creation of the world. It also considers how Western medieval artists, in inventing original illuminations and experimenting with new representational modes, suggest potential analogies between their own work, God's acts of creation, and nature's generative force.

Sampling and Site-Specific Practice in Contemporary Art
In the early 20th century, copying, cutting and pasting entered the Western European avant-garde through collage and readymades, as artists employed found objects and ephemera to create new meaning from existing materials. This book explores how this practice has evolved in contemporary art today, looking at its important and distinct outcomes in the practice of artists such as Andrea Fraser, Douglas Gordon, Isaac Julien, Christian Marclay, Amie Siegel and Christopher Williams. It analyses the pivotal consequences of the interrelationships these artists establish between fragments of culture, from television and film, to internet culture and their artwork's site, where the verb to "sample" has become deeply tied to digital music editing, writing, image production, database searches and social media. Samples take many forms: quotations of other cultural works; replicas of other objects; reenactments of works by other artists; or fragments that are quite literally cut or removed from other works of art, design, or media. Via Bouman's analysis, we visualise the shared frameworks of meaning that underpin these multifaceted, multidimensional and medium-fluid works. Focussing on 'action' and 'form', the book discusses the relationship between the referent and reference, and the citational labor that any sample performs. The distributive sense of authorship that emerges places the audience in a new position of significance. Concepts and themes discussed include: queer and race theory, postproduction and mirroring, mobile site specificity, now-time and dragging, and gender fluidity and Drag King performance, centring sampling as a key form of 21st-century art. With novel insights into the conceptual, material, and aesthetic dimensions of sampling in contemporary culture, the book provides a new critical framework for understanding the complex implications of this practice, as a vital resource for researchers in contemporary art practice and visual culture.

DakotaChrome
What is DakotaChrome? What you are looking at is not a trick, or manipulation through software. As someone who began their photography pursuit in the general field of journalism, it is important that I can get images without having to drastically edit them. What you see is what I get, true to what comes directly out of my camera as I can.The light that we see exists on a spectrum. Most of our perceived colors lay in the middle of that spectrum, with the ends being imperceivable to us. To get my desired image, I have modified my camera to remove certain wavelengths of infrared light, leaving the reds and pinks that are reflected by the plants, paint and objects within the scene and still maintaining the 'normal' colors you are accustomed to. There are some things you would not expect to reflect this infrared light, but do, like the wood used for buildings and clothing. The images held within this book were taken with a digital infrared camera. This is achieved by changing sensor glass and utilizing a series of carefully selected color filters. It is modeled after Kodak's Aerochrome film, which had been developed for military applications but found its way into the civilian space. Similar to my digital version, they used filters to alter the colors that the film would show. Richard Mosse, whose work in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is another great example of infrared photography with similar color results and is part of the inspiration for my pursuit in this field.
American Artists in Postwar Rome
Drawing on unpublished archival sources, this book reconstitutes the experiences of a wide range of American artists, critics, and writers working in Rome in a charged environment of "Cold War cosmopolitanism."After the Second World War, American artists flocked to Rome in record numbers, even as the United States shored up Italy as a bulwark against the spread of Communism. While the market for modern art in Rome was less vigorous as those in Paris and New York, numerous galleries, artist-run spaces, and other institutions acted as important catalysts, making Rome an international artistic hub. The city attracted now canonical figures Lee Bontecou, Philip Guston, Robert Rauschenberg, Paul Thek, and Cy Twombly, along with less well-known artists, such as Eugene Berman, Gene Charlton, Carlyle Brown, Peter Chinni, William Congdon, Claire Falkenstein, Marcia Hafif, John Heliker, James Leong, Beverly Pepper, and Laura Ziegler, among many others. Rather than focusing on institutions and diplomatic relationships, the book centres the experience of artists, and also addresses Rome's gay subculture and the role of female artists during the period, eschewing traditional narratives of the male "cultural ambassador." Through case-study based investigation, Peter Benson Miller explores the reciprocal relationships between American modernist artists and Italian artists in postwar Rome, and reveals how these artists perceived Rome as less constrained by the demands of a national school, and as an alternative to New York. This congenial creative atmosphere yielded "new pictorial forms" developed in tandem with or absorbed from like-minded Italian artists, engaging the city and its multiple layers of history, from antiquity to the profound trauma inflicted by the recent conflict. The book also establishes the entangled social networks, galleries, exhibitions, and institutions sustaining their work and providing entr矇e into local artistic circles. Focusing on a series of specific exchanges, this study contributes to our understanding American modernism in an international context.
