Modern Art in 1940s Cuba
The first book to explore the work of avant-garde artists in Cuba during the nation's years as a democracyProviding the first comprehensive history of modern Cuban art during the 1940s, this book contextualizes the artistic practices, values, and contributions of the first and second generations of avant-garde artists on the island within the framework of the nation's only democratic period.Between 1940 and the 1952 coup by Fulgencio Batista, Cuba experienced a democratic system of government as well as a vibrant cultural renaissance, particularly in the visual arts. Art historian and curator Alejandro Anreus uses interviews with key figures as well as previously untapped archival materials from this period to explore how Cuban artists collaborated to create distinct visual languages that would become part of the canon of modern art in the Americas. In this decade, Cuban art was showcased in major exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including the landmark 1944 exhibition Modern Cuban Painters at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.In addition to formal analysis of specific artworks, Anreus provides social art history to situate these artists and their work within their political and economic context. Anreus draws attention to an influential but overlooked decade in Cuba's political and artistic history that reflects postwar hemispheric solidarity and cultural exchange between democracies, highlighting the lasting impact of this time and place on the global landscape of modern art.
Michelle H
Stunning redhead Michelle H is one of our most popular Metart models. At the time of writing, Michelle is rated #48, with a rating of 9.15 based on 3,943 votes, with 253,598 views and 5,111 followers. She has appeared on many other sites in the Network: The Life Erotic, Errotica Archives, Rylsky Art, Eternal Desire; and on Domai, Goddess Nudes and Erotic Beauty as Nalla. Most notably, she has starred in several very hot girl-girl movies on Viv Thomas, working with director Alis Locanta; while on SexArt she is a major star, with 27 photosets to date, three girl-girl movies (one with top model Nancy A and one with Sybil A) and an unforgettable boy-girl movie, "The Port". She's a sultry goddess, but with a gorgeous smile that makes her altogether more approachable. And then, there's that stunning figure, with big, beautiful natural breasts and a perfect ass. It's not just her looks that have made her so successful though; she's a smart and ambitious girl, who brings her unique vision to her own movies. We are blessed with many talented female directors throughout the Metart Network, but Michelle is the only one who is still active as a model for other artists while also shooting her own movies - and sometimes appearing in them herself. Her work as Red Fox here on Metart, on Metart X, and particularly her kinky, fetish flavored films on The Life Erotic, suggest she is a creative force to be reckoned with. Here's hoping she'll be appearing on both sides of the camera for a long time to come.
Wonders
In the mid-19th century, intrepid explorers began to shine a light on the darkness of the deep. The mystique of what lay beneath the surface of the vast oceans inspired awe in aquarium enthusiasts, Decadent artists, and authors, including Jules Verne and Hans Christian Andersen. Ever since, books, films and visual arts have invited us to contemplate the sea as both the wellspring of all life and a resolutely alien world. Wonders - A Literary History of the Deep Sea recalls the era of undersea telegraph cables and the heyday of the aquarium. It presents mermaids, octopuses and jellyfish and explores some of the many works of art that conceptualise undersea marvels or dream of vanishing ecstatically into the depths, into this other element. It is the story of how we imagine life was formed underwater and on our planet. It is about the historical basis for our modern perception of the sea and a call to action before the fantastic creatures with whom we have only just begun to become acquainted disappear forever.

The Sound of the English Picturesque
Revealing the connections between the veneration of national landscape and eighteenth-century English vocal music, this study restores English music's relationship with the picturesque. In the eighteenth century, the emerging taste for the picturesque was central to British aesthetics, as poets and painters gained popularity by glorifying the local landscape in works concurrent with the emergence of native countryside tourism. Yet English music was seldom discussed as a medium for conveying national scenic beauty. Stephen Groves explores this gap, and shows how secular song, the glee, and national theatre music expressed a uniquely English engagement with landscape.Using an interdisciplinary approach, Groves addresses the apparent 'silence' of the English picturesque. The book draws on analysis of the visualisations present in the texts of English vocal music, and their musical treatment, to demonstrate how local composers incorporated celebrations of landscape into their works. The final chapter shows that the English picturesque was a crucial influence on Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Seasons. Suitable for anyone with an interest in eighteenth-century music, aesthetics, and the natural environment, this book will appeal to a wide range of specialists and non-specialists alike.

The War of Art
How artists have changed America through direct action Artists in America have long battled against injustices, believing that art can in fact "do more." The War of Art tells this history of artist-led activism and the global political and aesthetic debates of the 1960s to the present. In contrast to the financialized art market and celebrity artists, the book explores the power of collective effort -- from protesting to philanthropy, and from wheat pasting to planting a field of wheat. Lauren O'Neill-Butler charts the post-war development of artists' protest and connects these struggles to a long tradition of feminism and civil rights activism. The book offers portraits of the key individuals and groups of artists who have campaigned for solidarity, housing, LGBTQ+, HIV/AIDS awareness, and against Indigenous injustice and the exclusion of women in the art world. This includes: the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition (BECC), Women Artists in Revolution (WAR), David Wojnarowicz's work with ACT UP, Top Value Television (TVTV), Agnes Denes, Edgar Heap of Birds, Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!), fierce pussy, Project Row Houses, and Nan Goldin's Prescription Addiction Intervention Now (PAIN). Based upon in-depth oral histories with the key figures in these movements, and illustrated throughout, The War of Art is an essential corrective to the idea that art history excludes politics.
