This critical art history is divided into two parts: first, a historical overview following the development of these art institutions for the last 40 years, and second, an examination of grassroots efforts in critical art management, emphasizing self-governance, feminist education, and political commitment. A heavily illustrated catalog of 78 objects, dating from 1760 to 1790, from the collection of the Concord Museum in Massachusetts In 1775, the people of Concord, Massachusetts, understood they were living through extraordinary times. David Brown, captain of one of Concord's minute companies, and his family carefully saved and passed through generations a looking glass broken by British troops vandalizing the town on April 19, 1775. Today, that fractured mirror, with its single surviving shard, stands as a poignant witness to the Revolution, prominently displayed at the Concord Museum and featured in this book. It is objects like David Brown's looking glass that form the heart of the Concord Museum's American Revolution collection--artifacts that not only witnessed history but, in some cases, quite literally reflected it. Eyewitness to Revolution features 78 objects dating from 1760 to 1790 that relate to the American Revolution. It includes all the items on view in the April 19, 1775 gallery, as well as April 19 material not in the exhibition. Also included are objects dating from 1760 to 1775 pertaining to the lead-up to the conflict, and another group dating from 1775 to 1790 that are associated with events from the Siege of Boston to just past the end of the Revolutionary War. The images are accompanied by a continuous narrative, carried forward by the objects in the collection. A needlework picture, a smashed looking glass, a wooden spoon, a stair tread, a scattering of flints, a silver-hilted sword--each was an eyewitness to the American Revolution. In testifying to what they saw, they testify as well to the power of material culture to improve our understanding of history.

A Nation, not A Parish
As recent studies on the London Irish and on the work of almost forgotten artists have revealed, there existed in the 1930s a vibrant appreciation and response to international politics and artistic innovations. Many Irish writers such as Kate O'Brien, Elizabeth Bowen, Sean O'Faolain, Liam O'Flaherty, to name but a few, felt at ease in this climate. Reconsidering Irish culture in the 1930s in light of recent critical work will further enhance an understanding of a decade of cultural production which, until the turn of the 21st century, was subjected to comparatively narrow interpretations. At a time when a fledgling democracy was being created in Ireland, the influence of these and other connections in the realm of culture cannot be underestimated. It is the major purpose of this book to rely on all these premises and rebuild the milieu of the 1930s by observing the dialogues between the homewhere-s and elsewhere-s where Ireland's cultural legacy and cultural products have been shaped.

The Art and Life of Francesca Alexander
This is the first book to examine the art and life of Boston-born artist Francesca Alexander (1837-1917). Francesca and her parents moved to Florence in 1853 and became part of a thriving international community. She was a largely self-taught artist, and both her art and writing focused on Italians and Italian life. Her portraits and nature studies, and her translations of songs and stories, were much admired by her contemporaries, including John Ruskin, who published three of her manuscripts and promoted her work to his followers. She used her earnings from the sale of these publications, and her art, to fund her many charitable endeavours; both friends and admirers marvelled at her saintly character, which they linked to a romantic view of Italy itself. Nonetheless, in spite of her celebrity on both sides of the Atlantic, she and her work have been largely forgotten.Drawing on her work, as well as other sources including letters, diaries, guidebooks, newspapers and magazines, this book provides a vivid biography of Francesca Alexander, her art, and her place in history.
Those Passions
Those Passions unpicks the nature of capitalist societies since the fifteenth century and the art produced within them. Charles Gagnon
A personal and intimate perspective on one of Canada's most prominent 20th century multidisciplinary artists, who was once described as "abstraction's poet-philosopher." Charles Gagnon (1934-2003) was a painter, photographer and filmmaker considered by many to be an important figure in Quebec and Canadian art in the 20th century. His early career emerged alongside the American Abstract Expressionists and his growing multidisciplinary practice broke away from the singularity of painting shared by his Montreal contemporaries of the Automatistes and the Plasticiens. The complexity and depth of his work as a painter, photographer, and filmmaker was distinguished by a probing, introspective quality. His paintings were simultaneously rigid and free-flowing, with self-imposed rules and structure contrasted by rich fracture and gestural brush work. Across all disciplines he played with multiple levels of perception, and many works evoke the liminal space of the threshold, or multi-plane spaces. In Charles Gagnon: The Colour of Time, the Sound of Space, this long-standing multidisciplinary work is brought into full view with texts that explore Gagnon's various practices, from painting to photography to film. An English-language essay by art historian and curator Roald Nasgaard chronicles Gagnon's artistic evolution from his early years in New York in the 1950s to his final productive years in the late 1990s in Quebec, and situates him within an expanded international historical context of artists, artworks, and art movements. Filmmaker and professor Olivier Asselin's French-language essay engages Gagnon's use of different media, including the role of sound and music in his artworks.
