How Museums Tell Stories explains how museums "work" as a form of media that narrates stories intentionally and unintentionally. Story--in life and in museums--is a phenomenon that emerges as people perceive, represent, and interpret the qualities of tellability and narrativity in relation to stimuli. Tellability is noteworthiness: it attracts our attention. Narrativity is a set of elements that enables us to perceive the noteworthiness of a story. Steina
The first comprehensive monograph in over a decade celebrating the work of pioneering video artist Steina, who is known for pushing perspective beyond the human-centered realm. Accompanying the related exhibition at MIT List Visual Arts Center and Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Steina brings renewed recognition to Steina (b. 1940, Iceland), tracing her oeuvre from early collaborative works with her partner Woody Vasulka to her independent explorations of optics and a liberated, non-anthropocentric subjectivity. It follows her practice from downtown New York to Buffalo to the vast landscapes of New Mexico and Iceland, which appear in her immersive video environments of the 1990s and 2000s. Venturing into nature and combining imaging technologies with reflective orbs, Steina reorientated the human body's relationship to nature and expanded how we access the natural world through media. Scholars including Gloria Sutton, Joey Heinen, and Ina Blom consider how Steina's generative sense of play gave way to methods of processing and computation; contextualize Steina alongside a group of her peers who shared an obsession with the electronic signal; and argue for her interest in video as a proto-virtual space. Steina has never felt more relevant. Steina, born Steinunn Briem Bjarnadottir, studied violin and music theory in Reykjavik before attending the State Music Conservatory in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In 1965, she emigrated to New York City. By the late 1960s, she began to focus entirely on video work, and in 1971, cofounded The Electronic Kitchen (later The Kitchen), an experimental electronic media space. Her work has been shown at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and many other places. Informatics of Domination
Informatics of Domination is an experimental collection addressing formations of power that manifest through technical systems and white capitalist patriarchy in the twenty-first century. The volume takes its name from a chart in Donna J. Haraway's canonical 1985 essay "A Manifesto for Cyborgs." Haraway theorizes the informatics of domination as a feminist, diagrammatic concept for situating power and a world system from which the figure of the cyborg emerges. Informatics of Domination builds on Haraway's chart as an open structure for thought, inviting fifty scholars, artists, and creative writers to unfold new perspectives. Their writings take on a variety of forms, such as essays on artificial intelligence, disability and protest, and transpacific imaginaries; conversations with an AI trained on Black oral history; a three-dimensional response to Mexico-US border tensions; images drawn by hand on queer autotheory; ecological fictions about gut microbiomes and wet markets; and more. Together, the writings take up the unfinished structure of the chart in order to proliferate critiques of white capitalist patriarchal power with the study of information systems, networks, and computation today. Letterlocking
The rich history of a centuries-old document security technology--folding and securing a letter into its own envelope for delivery--and a comprehensive guide to learning how to make your own locked letters. Before the invention of the gummed envelope in the 1830s, how did people secure their private letters? The answer is letterlocking--the ingenious process of securing a letter using a combination of folds, tucks, slits, or adhesives such as sealing wax, so that it becomes its own envelope. This almost entirely forgotten practice, used by historical figures ranging from Elizabeth I and her spies to Japanese samurai lords, was an everyday activity for centuries, across cultures, borders, and social classes. In Letterlocking, Jana Dambrogio and Daniel Starza Smith, experts who have pioneered the field over the last ten years, tell the fascinating story of letterlocking within epistolary history, drawing on real historical examples from all over the world. Fully illustrated with more than 300 images and diagrams, including a dictionary of sixty technical terms and concepts, Letterlocking describes the essential precepts of the practice and provides sources of practical support needed for beginner and advanced users of letterlocking. The Beauty of Belief
The Beauty of Belief sheds new light on Lutheran relationships with ecclesiastical decoration in southwest Germany following the Duchy of W羹rttemberg's Reformation in 1534. Based on extensive original archival research and engagement with surviving images and objects, R籀is穩n Watson compellingly demonstrates how Lutherans moved away from initial acts of iconoclasm and towards embracing the possibilities of the religious image in their devotional routines. She explores the interactions of W羹rttemberg rulers, pastors, and congregations with their ecclesiastical spaces across the political upheavals of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In doing so, this book tells not only the story of the visual culture of the Reformation, but an account of W羹rttemberg's Reformation itself.

The Human Shutter
New perspectives on photography and binocular vision. This book explores how binocular rivalry, termed "the human shutter," provokes a reexamination of the standard chronology of cinema. The role of the human shutter is demonstrated here with a preliminary taxonomy of astonishing images excavated from the photographic archive. The book first looks at how photographic stillness, depth, and motion emerged en masse, departing from the gradualist narratives familiar in histories of photography and film. Next, the book addresses the role of binocular vision in the history of painting and photography. It further examines the rich history of early stereoviews that constitute the origins of photographic cinema and other instances of temporality. Last, the work explores what happens after light arrives at the retina, employing the stereoscope as a metaphor for critical thinking. In addition to these new perspectives, the book contains significant original research on early photographers who explored motion with binocular vision, especially Antoine Claudet and Giorgio Sommer. Senga Nengudi
A celebration of five decades of multimedia artist Senga Nengudi's creative practice. Radically expanding our understanding of Senga Nengudi's art, this book publishes never before seen drawings, prints, photographs, performance scores, and poetry, spanning five decades of her practice. When Senga Nengudi's sculptural installation RSVP debuted at Just Above Midtown in 1977, the works quickly became icons of the Black Arts movement. During her five-decade-long career, Nengudi has realized a remarkable body of work that blurs the boundaries between sculpture and performance, fine art and ritual, individual authorship and collective energy. Made of everyday materials, Nengudi's installations are at once proxies for bodies and sites for performance. Characteristic of her openness to multiplicity, the artist, born Sue Ellen Irons, has assumed pseudonyms that inflect her creative identities as sculptor (Senga Nengudi), painter (Harriet Chin), photographer (Propecia Leigh), and writer (Lily Bea Moor). Beginning in the 1920s, a man named Julius Streicher published a small weekly German newspaper called Der St羹rmer. Its mission was straightforward: to warn the German people about the threats posed by foreign and domestic Jews. The dangers were very real, and Streicher's stories gave a blunt and direct account of them.A key feature of Der St羹rmer was its political cartoons. The cover of almost every issue, and several interior pages, displayed cartoons depicting various Jewish dangers, in a most striking and graphic form. The lead cartoonist was a man named 'Fips' Rupprecht. His cartoons quickly became the signature feature of the newspaper. With the demise of National Socialist Germany, Der St羹rmer and Fips' cartoons were largely forgotten. Recently, though, a skilled digital artist named Robert Penman rediscovered the forgotten images. He carefully restored, colorized, and reissued them. Here, in Volume Three of this series, he presents another 250 images as they have never been seen before.Penman has done a masterful job. The images are sharp, crisp, and compelling. The colors are stunningly vivid and the effect is astonishing. Fips' cartoons, originally printed in black and white on cheap newsprint, come alive for the first time. Every image is a small masterpiece. And each one tells a story-a story with relevance for the present day.
