The Cultures of Entanglement
The symbolic meaning of plants, their relevance to religion and the metaphorical provocations in the order of knowledge, culture and political power underline the role of plants as something more than passive objects. Current theoretical and artistic discourses have been seeking access to the world independently of man by focusing on the nonhuman other. The contributors to this volume examine the historical, philosophical and scientific findings that generate this idea. In what way are such perspectives manifest in contemporary art? Do artists develop a particular approach that enables nonhuman life forms like plants, insects or animals to have an impact?

Autotheories
A transdisciplinary array of authors offering a new frame of reference for autotheory and its genre-bending synthesis of autobiography and critical theory. Autotheories tells the story of a field in formation. Building on traditions that have long fused life writing, philosophical encounter, embodied theorizing, and cultural critique, autotheory constructs new practices of critical theory. Transgressing generic boundaries and bridging stylistic registers, it crafts language that is intimate, analytic, playful, and insurgent. Editors Alex Brostoff and Vilashini Cooppan underscore autotheory's multiple genealogies and genre-bending forms while situating it within the contemporary political field. In this collection, autotheory emerges as a strut (of style), a straddle (of disciplines), a proliferation (of selves), an axis (of identifications), an index (of attachments), and an archive (of loves). An assemblage and an experience, Autotheories surveys the field's iterations and permutations. Without settling for classification or bowing to ossification, Autotheories invites you to its discursive play. Contributors include: Alex Brostoff, Jessica Bush, Judith Butler, Vilashini Cooppan, Carla Freccero, rl Goldberg, Jan Grue, Emma Lieber, Megan Moodie, Lili Owen Rowlands, John Patterson, Paul B. Preciado, Erica Richardson, Migueltzinta C. Sol穩s, Jamieson Webster, Damon Ross Young, Stacey Young, Arianne Zwartjes

Forever Flowers
A beautifully produced, close-up look at nature and flowers in the art of the late medieval Low Countries. If flowers could talk... In Forever Flowers, conservator Sven Van Dorst offers a different perspective on a vibrant genre, the seventeenth-century Flemish flower still life. His detailed exploration of eight magnificent pictures in the collection of The Phoebus Foundation is a search for the secrets that lie beneath the brushstrokes of Jan Brueghel I, Daniel Seghers, Jan Davidsz. De Heem, and their fellow flower painters. With the latest in modern analysis and imaging technologies as well as reconstructions of historical techniques he penetrates the deepest layers of their works, bringing to light features not seen for nearly four hundred years. For hidden behind the apparent simplicity of a flower piece are coded meanings and astonishing painting processes. The wealth of razor-sharp detail images in this richly illustrated book reveals many surprising inventions and discoveries about exotic flowers, butterfly wings, and... a llama. Each flower still life tells a story. Of perilous journeys, status and prestige, fear of death, love for a child, or our search for knowledge in a world that is ever-changing even as we try to hold on to it. For flowers do talk, and through these pages you can hear them. This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Garden of Delights. The Seventeenth Century in Bloom.' at Kadriorg Art Museum in Tallinn, on view from 30 August 2025 to 25 January 2026.
The Memoirs of Miss Chief Eagle Testickle: Box Set
From global art superstar Kent Monkman and his long-time collaborator Gis癡le Gordon, a transformational work of true stories and imagined history that will remake readers' understanding of the land called North America. For decades, the singular and provocative paintings by Cree artist Kent Monkman have featured a recurring character--an alter ego of sorts, a shape-shifting, time-travelling elemental being named Miss Chief Eagle Testickle. Though we have glimpsed her across the years in films and on countless canvases, it is finally time to hear her story, in her own words. And, in doing so, to hear the whole history of Turtle Island anew. The Memoirs of Miss Chief Eagle Testickle: A True and Exact Accounting of the History of Turtle Island is a genre-demolishing work of genius, the imagined history of a legendary figure through which profound truths emerge--a deeply Cree and gloriously queer understanding of our shared world, its past, its present, and its possibilities. Blending history, fiction, and memoir in bold new ways, The Memoirs of Miss Chief Eagle Testickle are unlike anything published before. In their power to reshape our shared understanding, they promise to change the way we see everything that lies ahead.

A Fire in His Soul
The fascinating story of Vincent van Gogh's two groundbreaking years in Paris, where he transformed himself from a provincial unknown into one of the world's great visionary artists. Vincent Van Gogh arrived in the French capital on the last day of February 1886, a month short of his thirty-third birthday. He was a man beaten down by life, half-starved, and nearly broken psychologically. He was saved by his brother Theo, who provided him with room, board, and, most crucially, emotional support while he attempted to master the difficult craft of painting. Thus far, Vincent's crude scenes of peasant life rendered in murky shades of brown and gray were both hackneyed and amateurish. Theo, a successful art dealer at a prestigious Parisian firm, dismissed them as gloomy, unappealing, and, worst of all, unmarketable. By the time Vincent left Paris, almost exactly two years later, he'd transformed himself into one of the most original artists of the age, turning out works of hallucinatory intensity in vivid hues and stamped with his own distinctive personality. A Fire in His Soul chronicles this remarkable transformation. It's a tale filled with tragedy and triumph, personal anguish and creative fulfillment, as Vincent, through sheer force of will, reinvents himself as a painter of unparalleled expressive power. Along the way, the reader will discover an unfamiliar Van Gogh: not the solitary genius of the popular imagination, shunned by an uncomprehending world and conjuring masterpieces from the depths of his lonely soul. In Paris, he was at the center of a community of like-minded seekers. Here, Van Gogh was able to engage in a lively dialogue with fellow artists almost as daring as he was, expanding his notion of what art could and should be. It was in the cafes and studios of Montmartre and in the grand galleries of the Louvre and Luxembourg, that Van Gogh received his artistic education--a crash course that at first disoriented him but ultimately sparked his creative breakthrough. Working alongside such legendary figures as Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Seurat, and Signac, Vincent perfected his technique and launched an artistic revolution.
The Rescuers
This book profiles some of the handful of people who rescued significant cultural treasures that would or may have been otherwise lost to humankind. Some, like Dr. Assad, were on a noble mission, but that is not always the case. Some are motivated by profit, fame, gratitude, or personal advancement. The act of rescue may not be straightforward: even the most heroic ones can be tainted, suspect, illegal, or ethically equivocal. The ten stories in The Rescuers include a variety of objects, motivations, locations and historic periods. They include a Scottish prehistoric site; Soviet-era seed banking; mid-20th century photographic masterworks; African American and immigrant folk music; Alaskan Native ceremonial and cultural objects; and a German language, Czech author whose manuscripts now reside in an Israeli archive. While each is a unique story, it is also representative of similar cases. Chapters explore some of the most controversial issues facing society today: appropriation, repatriation, indigenous rights, copyright law, racism, and the impact of tourism on fragile cultural sites. What does the act of rescue mean? What is the psychology of those who commit these acts? Should the imperatives of society trump the rights of individuals to control their own legacy? Is more ethical for a museum to preserve cultural treasures or to return them to a tribe that might destroy them? What are the trade offs between economic development and historic preservation? These are the conundrums of today, the challenges of the future. The stories included cover: The Monuments Officers' recovery of cultural treasures stolen by NazisThe saving of Skara Brae in Scotland by the Laird of BrecknessThe rescue of the Iraqi Jewish Archive by Harold Rhode and Doris HamburgTom Cade's preservation of Peregrine falconsLouis Shotridge and George B. Gordon's saving of Alaska's Tlingit cultureThe preservation of American folk songs by John Lomax
Stories in Glass
Norfolk's churches are home to some of the highest-quality and best-preserved medieval stained glass in Britain. Panels produced in the county's extensive and long-lasting workshops, centred in the historically important city of Norwich, can be found in some 270 buildings, including churches, museums and country houses. Moreover, recent research has revealed for the first time the original location of many of the panels now dispersed around the county. In Stories in Glass, Paul Harley and David King reveal these treasures to a new audience. Harley's exquisite photographs are set alongside historical and artistic explanations that illuminate the social, economic and religious background to the windows we see today. With 200 colour images, and maps showing the locations of the windows discussed, this beautifully illustrated guide will appeal to the explorer and collector alike.
Re-Envisioning the Everyday
Often seen as backward-looking and convention-bound, genre painting representing scenes of everyday life was central to the work of twentieth-century artists such as John Sloan, Norman Rockwell, Jacob Lawrence, who adapted such subjects to an era of rapid urbanization, mass media, and modernist art. Re-envisioning the Everyday asks what their works do to the tradition of genre painting and whether it remains a meaningful category through which to understand them.Working with and against the established narrative of American genre painting's late nineteenth-century decline into obsolescence, John Fagg explores how artists and illustrators used elements of the tradition to picture everyday life in a rapidly changing society, whether by appealing to its nostalgic and historical connotations or by updating it to address new formal and thematic concerns. Fagg argues that genre painting enabled twentieth-century artists to look slowly and carefully at scenes of everyday life and, on some occasions, to understand those scenes as sites of political oppression and resistance. But it also limited them to anachronistic ways of seeing and tied them to a freighted history of stereotyping and condescension.By surveying genre painting when its status and relevance were uncertain and by looking at works that stretch and complicate its boundaries, this book considers what the form is and probes the wider practice of generic categorization. It will appeal to students and scholars of American art history, art criticism, and cultural studies.

Inventing Indigenism
2023 ALAA Book Award, Association for Latin American Art/Arvey Foundation A fascinating account of the modern reinvention of the image of the Indian in nineteenth-century literature and visual culture, seen through the work of Peruvian painter Francisco Laso. One of the outstanding painters of the nineteenth century, Francisco Laso (1823-1869) set out to give visual form to modern Peru. His solemn and still paintings of indigenous subjects were part of a larger project, spurred by writers and intellectuals actively crafting a nation in the aftermath of independence from Spain. In this book, at once an innovative account of modern indigenism and the first major monograph on Laso, Natalia Majluf explores the rise of the image of the Indian in literature and visual culture. Reading Laso's works through a broad range of sources, Majluf traces a decisive break in a long history of representations of indigenous peoples that began with the Spanish conquest. She ties this transformation to the modern concept of culture, which redefined both the artistic field and the notion of indigeneity. As an abstraction produced through indigenist discourse, an icon of authenticity, and a densely racialized cultural construct, the Indian would emerge as a central symbol of modern Andean nationalisms. Inventing Indigenism brings the work and influence of this extraordinary painter to the forefront as it offers a broad perspective on the dynamics of art and visual culture in nineteenth-century Latin America.
Tracings
The essays of artist Ian Carr-Harris, which span decades of critical thought and engagement. An artist, curator, critic, and teacher, Ian Carr-Harris has been a central figure in Toronto's art scene since the 1970s. By collecting his impressive output of essays, critical experiments, and reviews into a single volume, Tracings documents the growth of conceptual art and postmodernism in Canadian art, as well as the expansion of mediums and spaces, while providing insights into methods of representation and the role of criticism in contemporary art. In clear and intelligent prose, Carr-Harris offers detailed studies of individual artists and exhibitions as well as theoretically informed reflections on broader cultural concerns. Whether writing about the complexities involved in the construction and transmission of knowledge, meaning, and historical narrative; discussing the material matters of government cultural funding, patronage, and artist-run centers; or describing his own process and artworks, these pieces reveal a literary love of language and a nuanced and investigative mind at work. Throughout his writing, he considers themes of identity, cultural nationalism, postcolonialism, institutionalism, the act of viewing, and relations of power.
The Kaiser's Mosques
This book highlights an understudied experiment at the intersection of 19th-century European and Islamic architectural histories. It draws attention to a body of buildings designed by architects trained in Central Europe for use by Muslims in Habsburg-ruled Bosnia-Herzegovina (1878-1918). They include mosques, madrasas, and other buildings corresponding to a traditional Islamic formal and functional typology. The composition and decoration, however, is the product of 19th-century European Historicist conduct. It became a prominent style for town halls and private residences; on occasion, it was also used for railway stations, schools, or hotels. The spread and concentration of buildings in this style in Bosnia is extraordinary. This monography not only fills a gap in an art history that has long turned a blind eye to Europe's Southeast but also contributes to our understanding of European powers' historical responses to the challenge of cultural diversity in territories under their control.

Reclaiming and Redefining American Exhibitions of Russian Art
This book examines the history of American exhibitions of Russian art in the twentieth century in the context of the Cold War. Because this history reflects changes in museological theory and the role of governments in facilitating or preventing intercultural cooperation, it uncovers a story that is far more complex than a chronological listing of exhibition names and art works. Roann Barris considers questions of stylistic appropriations and influences and the role of museum exhibitions in promoting international and artistic exchanges. Barris reveals that Soviet and American exchanges in the world of art were extensive and persistent despite political disagreements before, during, and after the Cold War. It also reveals that these early exhibitions communicated contradictory and historically invalid pictures of the Russian or Soviet avant-garde. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museum studies, and Russian studies.
Art and Artifice in Visual Culture
This edited volume explores the notion of "artifice" in modern visual culture, ranging from the eighteenth century to the present, in countries around the globe.Artifice has been regarded as a primarily Western phenomenon, playing as it does a central role in European art theory since the Renaissance. This volume proposes that artifice is better understood as a transcultural artistic phenomenon and requires far broader conceptualization across international contexts. It acquaints readers with works of art, visual modes of communication, and concepts originating in France, Germany, the United States, Japan, and China, and includes painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, photographs, film, and virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) objects. Contributors demonstrate how practices of artifice function as both symbol and form, in parallel and divergent ways, in multiple cultural settings. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, and material culture.
Audiovisual Disruption
Post-digital art suggests a form of embodiment of digital technologies that unfolds in physical space through hands-on material approaches, and even the repurposing of older analogue media. Pedro Ferreira examines these aesthetics in contemporary audiovisual arts as reactions to our post-digital condition. He traces four post-digital territories by looking on the digital infrastructure, within the effects of the post-digital condition, in-between digital and non-digital media as media hybrids, and off digital media in a turn to analogue media. Concluding with a series of artworks, this study exposes the material, sociocultural and environmental consequences of digital technologies in our post-digital age.
Interdisciplinary Exhibitions and the Production of Knowledge
How can exhibitions not only stage existing knowledge, but also raise questions that lead to new research? This question has become ever more relevant due to the museum sector's growing interest in the development of thematic exhibitions that combine narratives and objects from art, science, cultural history, and everyday life. Using theories from interdisciplinarity studies, Henriette Pleiger identifies different ways of producing knowledge during the exhibition-making process, as well as the mechanisms that are necessary for an exhibition to be considered interdisciplinary. The development of such exhibitions can be understood as collaborative research processes.
Everyday Joys in Twenty-First Century Queer American Painting
Taken together, the chapters in this book outline a theory and a practice of painting ecstatic ordinarinesses in contemporary, diverse American queer life.To do so, it offers the first sustained study of five individually renowned twenty-first-century queer painters--Gio Black Peter, Doron Langberg, Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Salman Toor, and Jo瓊o Gabriel--who have achieved substantial recognition from international museums, galleries, and critics working with short-form reviews but not yet from academics producing large-scale studies. This study argues for a broad understanding of what constitutes the queer American art of our time and for a broad sense of who can help to fashion American culture and history, including art by African American, Southeast Asian, Muslim and Jewish American, South American, and gender nonconforming queer artists. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, contemporary art, gender studies, and queer studies.
Seeing Through Stone
Centering the voices of the currently and formerly incarcerated, works from 80 contributors visualize a prison-free futurePublished with Institute of the Arts and Sciences at UC Santa Cruz and San Jos矇 Museum of Art. Prisons are so ingrained in history and the cultural imagination as to appear inevitable. Yet as long as prisons have existed, alternative rehabilitations have flourished. Seeing through Stone accompanies the largest-ever exhibition emerging from the movement for prison abolition in the United States. It draws its title from a work by poet Etheridge Knight (1931-91), who wrote his first collection while incarcerated at Indiana State Prison. The art and texts in this catalog explore this shared capacity for the radical sight permeating through prison walls and include contributions from artists, writers and activists both currently and formerly incarcerated, alongside those without that lived experience. Over 80 artists and collectives from around the world contribute work, while the original texts are authored by such activists as Robin D.G. Kelley and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson.

Amazigh Cinema
An introduction to North African Indigenous cinema through a new understanding of the Amazigh homelandsAmazigh Cinema: An Introduction to North African Indigenous Film examines the emergence of Amazigh visual media in its historical and cultural contexts and engages in a decolonization of the studies of Amazigh expression. An exploration of film from across the Tamazgha or Amazigh homeland produced by and about Imazighen, Indigenous peoples historically referred to as "Berbers," the book underscores the role of cinematic art in language preservation and the shaping of contemporary Amazigh identity against a backdrop of historical repression and exclusion. Opening up debate on the growing archive of Amazigh cinema for global audiences, this collection contrasts Amazigh production with national and global cinema and traces links between oral performance, amateur video, and feature films. These films expose fault lines in post-colonial belief systems and interrogate the tension between the pull of nostalgia and push for change as filmmakers use their cameras to re-establish a sense of presence and continuity in a changing world. Resisting folklorization, Amazigh Cinema shows how Amazigh filmmakers engage multiple spectatorships in the everyday lives of rural and immigrant people who have overcome discrimination and cultural apathy using the ancient methods and modern tools at hand. Their use of visual mediums to craft new narratives of Amazigh life creates a space for all audiences to witness Indigenous lives and their strategies--and celebration-- of survival.
