Citizen Spectator
In this richly illustrated study, the first book-length exploration of illusionistic art in the early United States, Wendy Bellion investigates Americans' experiences with material forms of visual deception and argues that encounters with illusory art shaped their understanding of knowledge, representation, and subjectivity between 1790 and 1825. Focusing on the work of the well-known Peale family and their Philadelphia Museum, as well as other Philadelphians, Bellion explores the range of illusions encountered in public spaces, from trompe l'oeil paintings and drawings at art exhibitions to ephemeral displays of phantasmagoria, "Invisible Ladies," and other spectacles of deception.Bellion reconstructs the elite and vernacular sites where such art and objects appeared and argues that early national exhibitions doubled as spaces of citizen formation. Within a post-Revolutionary culture troubled by the social and political consequences of deception, keen perception signified able citizenship. Setting illusions into dialogue with Enlightenment cultures of science, print, politics, and the senses, Citizen Spectator demonstrates that pictorial and optical illusions functioned to cultivate but also to confound discernment. Bellion reveals the equivocal nature of illusion during the early republic, mapping its changing forms and functions, and uncovers surprising links between early American art, culture, and citizenship.
Mrs Kauffman and Madame Le Brun
From the acclaimed author of The King's Painter, a vivid life-and-times biography of two unjustly neglected women artists, Angelica Kauffman and Elisabeth Vig矇e Le Brun. In the late autumn of 1789, two of Europe's most celebrated painters met in Rome. One, Angelica Kauffman, was a Swiss-born prodigy who had conquered the art scenes of London and Italy. The other, ?lisabeth Louise Vig矇e Le Brun, a Parisienne portraitist and favourite of the ancien regime, had just fled revolutionary France under threat of violence and scandal. Both were feted in their time, both were trailblazers in a male-dominated world - visionaries who helped define eighteenth-century art and feminism before the term existed. This dual biography, framed within a thrilling story, restores these two extraordinary but unjustly overlooked figures to their rightful place in history. Set against a backdrop of revolution, empire and Enlightenment, it traces the dramatic lives and remarkable careers of Vig矇e Le Brun and Kauffman: artists who not only achieved unparalleled success and influence, but did so while pushing the boundaries of what women could be, both on canvas and in society. With vivid storytelling, one of the most gifted living writers of artistic biography, Franny Moyle, reclaims their legacies. She examines how each artist navigated fame, scandal and exile; explores the relationships between them and their peers; and considers how they were caught up in the huge cultural cross-currents that were reshaping Europe. Through their work and their lives, they spoke boldly to the roles of women in public life, highlighted the prejudices and abuses suffered by their sex, reimagined and celebrated the female subject and challenged the institutions that sought to contain them. Through them we encounter icons such as Marie Antoinette (whose portrait by Le Brun scandalised French society) and Catherine the Great, as well as cultural figures such as Emma Hamilton and Madame de Sta禱l. The most notable men of their time - monarchs, statesman, aristocrats, artists and more - are also woven into the fabric of the tale. MRS KAUFFMAN & MADAME LE BRUN is a timely, revelatory history that not only brings two forgotten artists into view, but rethinks the story of European art itself.

Japanese Art - Transcultural Perspectives
The transcultural approach to Japanese art history embraced by the contributors to this volume centers on the dynamic aesthetic, artistic, and conceptual negotiations across cultural, temporal, and spatial boundaries. It not only acknowledges material objects, people, and technologies as agents, but also intangible practices such as knowledge and concepts as vital agencies of interaction in transcultural processes. With its premise on connectivity, trans-territoriality, networks, and their transformative potential, this research destabilizes categorical configurations such as "center vs. periphery" and "high vs. low," calling into question the classical canon of Japanese art history.

Painting Us Empire
A fresh look at the global dimensions of US painting from the 1850s to 1898. Painting US Empire is the first book to offer a synthetic account of art and US imperialism around the globe in the nineteenth century. In this work, art historian Maggie M. Cao crafts a nuanced portrait of nineteenth-century US painters' complicity with and resistance to ascendant US imperialism, offering eye-opening readings of canonical works, landscapes of polar expeditions and tropical tourism, still lifes of imported goods, genre paintings, and ethnographic portraiture. Revealing how the US empire was "hidden in plain sight" in the art of this period, Cao examines artists including Frederic Edwin Church and Winslow Homer who championed and expressed ambivalence toward the colonial project. She also tackles the legacy of US imperialism, examining Euro-American painters of the past alongside global artists of the present. Pairing each chapter with reflections on works by contemporary anticolonial artists including Tavares Strachan, Nicholas Galanin, and Yuki Kihara, Cao addresses important contemporary questions around representation, colonialism, and indigeneity. This book foregrounds an underacknowledged topic in the study of nineteenth-century US art and illuminates the ongoing ecological and economic effects of the US empire.

The Theater of Refusal
Updated documentation of The Theater of Refusal on the exhibition's 30th anniversaryIn 1993, at the University of California, Irvine, Charles Gaines and Catherine Lord mounted a category-breaking exhibition of Black artists from different generations, working across Fluxus, Conceptualism, assemblage, photography and installation. Challenging the racializing of Black artists' work, the exhibition confronted the discourse around race difference in the United States by including excerpts of writing by art critics who had discussed the featured artists. On the 30th anniversary of this event, this publication reprints the eponymous 1993 volume documenting the show, which contained essays by Gaines, Lord and Berger, and the transcript of a roundtable of artists and writers. Reproducing images of the exhibition in color for the first time, this new edition augments the original publication with an essay by poet and scholar Fred Moten; recent conversations between Lord and Gaines; an interview with Gaines by Moten; and a new roundtable discussion moderated and edited by curator Jamillah James and Thomas (T.) Jean Lax.Artists include: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ren矇e Green, David Hammons, Ben Patterson, Sandra Rowe, Gary Simmons, Lorna Simpson, Carrie Mae Weems.

The Art of Anna Dorothea Therbusch (1721-1782)
The Art of Anna Dorothea Therbusch (1721-1782) is the first English-language monograph on this exceptional German artist that critically examines Therbusch's artworks and career as a history and mythological painter, portraitist, and maker of synthetic pigments within the German and international milieu that both condemned and celebrated her accomplishments. Adding to the excellent scholarship on French, British, Italian, and Swiss eighteenth-century women painters, this book showcases the social and cultural practices of court cultures beyond France, with a focus on German-speaking Europe and how a provocative woman painter navigated within them. Meticulous archival and literary research sheds new light on the importance of the family atelier as a place of networking, collaboration, and experimentation in the eighteenth century and provides a fresh perspective on the growing Prussian intellectual and mercantilist cultures and their impact on Therbusch's artistic production and the unavoidable fluency between painting, the minor or luxury arts, and the laboratory. Therbusch's life and art enriches our understanding of female artistic agency and the complexities of pursuing a career in the male- and academy-dominated art world of the eighteenth century.

Graffiti in the urban context of the city of S瓊o Carlos
The aim of this book is to study the artistic and aesthetic expression of urban graffiti, specifically in the city of S瓊o Carlos/SP, based on contextualising the historical process of graffiti in Brazil and around the world, addressing its importance as a cultural movement, socio-cultural resistance, a vehicle for communication and a work of street art.We also researched the relationship between graffiti and Sanca Hip Hop, an event that has taken place every November since 2007, in partnership with the Black movement and the S瓊o Carlos/SP Hip Hop collective. In this study, we sought to contribute to an understanding of graffiti interventions. The theoretical framework of Lara (1996), Costa (1994, 2000) and Zamboni (2001) was used as a basis for the research.
Theology in the Mode of Monk
This captivating study engages two of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century: Karl Barth, the Swiss Protestant theologian, who constructed his theology "from above" and engaged the powers in the background of Nazi Germany, and James H. Cone, the father of Black Theology in America, who constructed his theology "from below" and confronted white racism--the most intractable issue in America's history. In this three-volume project, Carr employs the aesthetic thinking of the jazz legend Thelonious Monk to reconceptualize, restructure, and advance the theologies of Barth and Cone. In this second volume, Carr appeals to Monk's tune "'Round Midnight" as the analogical framework for articulating the meaning between Christ, the cantus firmus, and the sociopolitical histories of Karl Barth and James Cone. Monk's encouragement to "improvise on the melody" is heard as the melodic foundation for a new form of christological reflection.

Picasso, Modigliani, and a Blind Man Crazy for Color. Illustrated by Picasso's Model and Muse, Sylvette David. Second, Revised Edition
In the early years of the twentieth century, a retired legal clerk in Montmartre named Leon Angely collected Picassos, Modiglianis, and Utrillos before any of these artists were well known. And he purchased many of these creations after his failing vision left him almost completely blind. Legend has it that Leon was assisted by a young girl who served as his "eyes," and based on her description of the work he would make his selections. This homage to the 'blind man who was crazy for color' uncovers previously unknown information about this important yet largely forgotten figure who inspired one of Picasso's most powerful engravings, featuring a 'Blind Minotaur' being led by a little girl. The book is illustrated with original artwork by Picasso's model and muse, Sylvette David, who posed for the painter when she was only nineteen years old, in 1954. Now eighty-seven, Sylvette credits Picasso with inspiring her to devote her life to painting. Her work is frequently exhibited in Europe, and in 2021 she was invited to lecture at the Musee Picasso is Paris.

Acclaimed Spanish visual artist, sculptor, designer and engraver Jaume Plensa is renowned for his ability to weave spirituality, corporeality, and collective memory into his sculptures and installations, using a wide range of materials. Many of his iconic sculptures can be found in public spaces, in some of the most evocative places in the world. The city of Leuven now joins this list with the acquisition by KU Leuven of The Four Elements, the first permanent sculpture by Jaume Plensa in Belgian public space. The sculpture The Four Elements consists of two parts in bronze, located in two places, the gallery of the KU Leuven University Library and the newly created St-Rapha禱l Square. The first part, Fire, commemorates the resurrection of the University Library after the devastating fire of World War I. Water, Earth, Air, the second part, rises like a totem pole on a new urban site that is a meeting point for health care and medicine. This collection of essays documents how the two parts of the sculpture and its two sites represent a broader trinity of interaction and togetherness: between the university and the city and its public spaces, between research and art, between the study of health (in this case the brain) and organizing care.Contributing authors: St矇phane Symons (KU Leuven), Jaume Plensa (artist), Johan Wagemans (KU Leuven), Mark Derez (KU Leuven), Erik Thys (KU Leuven, UPC KU Leuven, LUCA School of Arts), Tom Van Imschoot (LUCA School of Arts, KU Leuven), Rebecca Gysen (City of Leuven), Karen Landuyt (City of Leuven), Stefanie Lambrecht (City of Leuven, LUCA School of Arts), Geert Bouckaert (KU Leuven)
Politics simple explained
Politics has been difficult to understand since its beginnings. In one hand because of the philosophical, social and academic approach of last centuries, and on the other hand because politicians and the interest groups they represent have no interest to make it comprehensible and easy to discuss and digest.Presented in simple language, social media like format, the author offers the IMDb of politics, with simple concepts, pictures, likes and dislikes to guide you to see politics the way your human and citizen condition must see it, with responsibility, awareness and conviction that your vote is your voice but only when given to the cause that really shares your own interests, as planet earth inhabitant. If you feel that the planet is in danger because of global warming, if you are pro-immigration, anti-war, pro-LGBTQ, pro-civil rights, if you are not NAZI-Ku-Kux-Klan-Proud Boy, if you are carrying student debt, if you are a worker, if you are human, if you know that States charge taxes in order to distribute wealth, if you have ever heard about the Social Contract, you may be a Socialist, there is nothing wrong with it! Do not panic, you are not the Venezuelan Dictatorship, nor they are Socialists. Just look inside to fact check it.

Painters and Communities in Seventeenth-Century Brussels
For many painters in seventeenth-century Brussels, it was not only their artistic talent but also the communities they were part of that determined the course of their careers. This book traces the intricate relationship between social structures and artistic production by examining the lives and works of all 353 painters who became masters in the Brussels Guild of Painters, Goldbeaters, and Stained-Glass Makers between 1599 and 1706. This innovative exploration of a social history of art seamlessly integrates quantitative digital analyses at the macro-level with micro-level qualitative case studies. This fresh approach facilitates a comparative perspective on the various environments in which painters operated, allowing for new readings of how early modern artists - both in Brussels and beyond - created their art, earned a living, and navigated the complexities of urban life. Painters and Communities in Seventeenth-Century Brussels is also the first work to provide a global overview of the Brussels Baroque, including extensive lists with biographical information on all of the city's master painters.
