"Our son asked me news of the whole world" were my grandfather's words at the dinner table following an interview I had with him. He was 90 and I was 21. Over a period of five years prior, my paternal uncle, Riario Moniz, was inculcating in me the pride in the Moniz brand without my realizing it. Sketches from Behind Prison Walls
A tribute to the millions of Americans who are or have been imprisoned, Sketches from Behind Prison Walls is a compelling collection of art, poetry, and anecdotes that explore what it means to love, atone, and survive behind prison walls. Incarcerated artist Rein Kolts began sketching his fellow inmates in the early years of his sentence. The subjects offered their written thoughts to accompany the drawings, giving voice to their hope and resilience. Their forlorn faces number only a few dozen and account for an infinitesimal fraction of America's vast prison population. But the limited scale of the collection offers greater intimacy with each man's portrait and voice, conveying the quiet strength of incarcerated people with unusual granularity. Byzantine Orthodoxy emphasized the divine glory of the Son of God, while Roman Catholicism focused more on the Savior's humanity and his redemptive sufferings. The stress on Christ's human nature and vulnerability has remained the most characteristic feature of Western Christian art, starting with the Renaissance. The image of the Crucifixion - ​the central event in Christian history - ​also remained widespread in the apparently secular and frequently atheistic modernist art scene.Twentieth--century Crucifixions exhibited great novelty, variety, and complexity. Contemporary painters used the body on the cross to explore a wide range of social and spiritual concerns, including their distinct iconoclastic causes. What is the common denominator behind the incredible diversity of the avant--garde depictions of the crucified Jesus? Sensing the Future
In the 1960s and '70s, collaborations between artists and engineers led to groundbreaking innovations in multisensory performance art that continue to resonate today. In 1966, Billy Kl羹ver and Fred Waldhauer, engineers at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey, teamed up with artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman to form a nonprofit organization, Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). E.A.T.'s debut event, 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, integrated art, theater, and groundbreaking technology in a series of performances at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan. Its second major event, the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan, presented a multisensory environment for the first world exposition held in Asia. At these events, and in the hundreds of collaborations E.A.T. facilitated in between, the participants--including John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, and David Tudor--imagined innovative ways for art and science to intersect and enrich society. Sensing the Future tells the story of these collaborations between artists and engineers and how they led to new installations and technology-based artworks. Through the examination of films, photographs, diagrams, and artists' records from the E.A.T. archive at the Getty Research Institute, this volume provides a new perspective on multimedia art in the 1960s and '70s and highlights the ways E.A.T. pushed the role of the artist beyond the traditional art world. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center from September 10, 2024, to February 23, 2025.
Our Journey through the Cork Oaks
This is our celebration of an amazing, somewhat undiscovered, wild corner of Europe where the cork oaks and holm oaks grow and give savanna character to an arid landscape that looks hard and difficult, but which glows with soft colours, azure-winged birds, and can turn into carpets of rich colours in spring. The place reverberates with big exciting wildlife - Iberian Lynx, Wild Boar, thousands of Cranes in winter, and gigantic Bustards, along with innumerable big soaring eagles and vultures. It looks wild, it acts wild and yet it is a man-made landscape: the wondrous growth forms of the trees are to a large degree pruned that way to maximise a harvest of rich acorns which fall to feed the black Iberian pigs and produce the tastiest Jam籀n in the land; the ground in between the trees is ploughed, planted and left fallow and cut back again in a gentle four year cycle of crops, flowers, grasses and shrubs leading to some of the richest plant diversities within each small area of land. And the beautiful thick, spongey, lichen-coloured bark on the Cork Oaks (which holds back the spread of fire from harming this vegetation and is playing an increasingly important role with climate change) is carefully protected and harvested every nine years when the rich red sangria-coloured trunks are laid bare and then darken to deep burgundy again over the years. Removing the bark does not kill these trees. It supports the huge cork industries of Portugal (Montados) and Spain (Dehesas). In this world where wildlife and agriculture are continually colliding we just found the harmony of people and wildlife and the inspiring paintable landscapes that we experienced across Alentejo and Extremadura a total tonic! Couple this with a trip with friends through some of the best wine regions and rural cultures and communities, tracing back many thousands of years, and you have a recipe for a great holiday.

Agatha Christie and Gothic Horror
Agatha Christie's work has been adapted extensively resulting in transformations that are both textual and cultural. While many adaptations are best known for being quaint murder mysteries, there are many adaptations of her work that draw on horror aesthetics. This book will look at how the growth of Agatha Christie adaptations have grown increasingly darker. Of key relevance to this study is the work of Sarah Phelps, whose Witness for the Prosecution, And Then There Were None, Ordeal by Innocence, The ABC Murders and The Pale Horse all are darker than their precedents. Born out of their contemporary screen contexts, they use entrenched literary and filmic codes of Gothic horror as central reference points for audiences. The Experience of Mould Making
My name is David, and my trade is 'Mould Maker'. Over the years, I have developed the art of making moulds for ceramics, candles, boats and other objects. I worked in several boatyards, one in Great Britain on the River Thames. My father was a ceramic technician and he had a factory where I earned a living making ceramic moulds from plaster of paris, some as large as an old television set. He rented me a workshop for two years. It is certainly possible to earn a living making moulds and this book will help you understand what is involved.

While attending college at St Lucaspavilioen in Antwerp, author Gerald-Johan Vanoise sensed something was missing in the common colour theories; they didn't match the reality of the two to three colour wheels currently being used. Knowing realities use colours differently from that demanded by the theory, he resolved to integrate those realities instead of ignoring them. Vanoise developed the Seven Colour Wheel Theory. In Seven Colour Wheels, he delves into this theory, revealing the starting point of the yin and yang of colours. He demonstrates how the principles of traditional colour theory with the colour wheels of subtraction and addition belong to a larger system of interactive colour attractions and saturations that can be derived from at least seven different regions that follow their own practice of reality of seeking balance. He validates his theory with the colour usage in drawings based on C.G. Jung's thoughts in Man and His Symbols. Vanoise also describes the psychological associations, the spiritual attraction toward colours found in The Tibetan Book of the Dead. In addition, he shows how the seven colour wheels also mesh with the Zang Fu organ colour associations and how they fit well with the spine sections. And in the book's last chapter, the Author discusses the match between the Yin and Yang psychology of colours and the significant usage of letters in the context of the changes of seasons.
