Consuming the Body
Consuming the Bodyexamines contemporary consumerism and the commodified construction of ideal gendered bodies, paying particular attention to the new forms of interaction produced by social networking sites. Describing the behaviours of an ideal neoliberal subject, Woolley identifies modes of discipline, forms of pleasure, and opportunities for subversion in an examination of how individuals are addressed and the ways in which they are expected to respond. Key modes of address that compel the consumer to consume are: sadistic commands communicated in adverts, TV programmes and magazine articles; a fetishistic gaze that dissects the body into parts to be improved through commodification; and a hystericized insistent presence that compels the consumer to present their body for critique and appreciation that is exemplified in the selfie.Woolley interprets the visual characteristics of different types of selfies, including #fitspiration, #thinspiration, #fatspiration, and #bodypositivity to understand how they relate to current body ideals. Healthism and culture bound illnesses such as hysteria and eating disorders are examined to demonstrate the impact of commodified body ideals on consumers' bodies. An analysis of thinspiration images (photographs of emaciated bodies shared on pro-eating-disorder blogs and websites) suggests that the anorexic body represents the logical (and fatal) end point for the idealised body in consumer culture. Fat acceptance selfies suggest there is a fourth mode of address, empowering presence that has the potential to liberate consumers from the 'trap of visibleness' produced by the other three modes of address. In conclusion, the book identifies some creative methods for producing selfies that evade commoditisation and discipline.

Sino-Mexican Art and Cultural Exchanges in the Twentieth Century
Includes 66 color images. This book-written from Zheng Shengtian's unique position of an artist, curator and scholar who participated in the history he recounts-vividly chronicles all the key artistic exchanges between Mexico and China during the twentieth century and, in the process, convincingly reveals the profound and lasting influence that Mexican murals and visual art exerted on contemporary Chinese art.Through archive materials, participant observations, and interviews collected over several decades, the book illuminates a broad range of influences, from Lu Xun introducing Diego Rivera's mural paintings to China in the 1930s to the deep impact that Mexican-American cartoonist Miguel Covarrubias had on the stylistic development of China's most famous mid-twentieth century cartoonists, the dramatic talks of David Siqueiros in Beijing during the Hundred Flowers Movement, and a fascinating account of his years spent in China by the "Latin American cultural ambassador" Chilean mural artist Jos矇 Venturelli (1925-1988). These transcultural connections have led to further collaborations and mutual influences among Chinese and Mexican artists down to the present-exemplified by Zheng Shengtian's own Winds from Fusang group mural and exhibitions-and represent a key part of the global modernist movement beyond North America and Europe and address an overlooked aspect of global art history. This study blends historical reflections with lived experience while bridging the two fields of Chinese and international art scholarship. The book fills a significant research gap in our understanding of contemporary Chinese art, offering new perspectives on important issues, such as the origins of contemporary Chinese art, the variety of impacts that have shaped the development of Chinese art over the past century besides Soviet/Russian socialist realism, and the decentralized modernity embodied by global leftwing artistic interactions. The book also includes a rich collection of color images and historical photos as well as a substantial section of translated primary documents, such as interviews with key participants from both China and Latin America.Sino-Mexican Art and Cultural Exchanges in the Twentieth Century is a must read for all those who study modern Chinese and Mexican art, cultural exchanges in modern China, and the interaction of leftist art and global modernism. It provides valuable materials for teaching global art history written in an accessible language, and its biographical approach and vivid primary materials will appeal to students from undergraduate levels upwards.
Being and Neonness, Translation and content revised, augmented, and updated for this edition by Luis de Miranda
A cultural and philosophical history of neon, from Paris in the twentieth century to the perpetually switched-on present day. For most of us, the word neon conjures images of lights, colors, nightlife, and streets. It evokes the poetry of city nights. For Luis de Miranda, neon is a subject of philosophical curiosity. Being and Neonness is a cultural and philosophical history of neon, from early twentieth-century Paris to the electric, perpetually switched-on present day Manhattan. It is an inspired journey through a century of night, deciphering the halos of the past and the reflections of the present to shed light on the future. Invented in Paris in 1912, neon first appeared on a modest but arresting sign outside a small barbershop; the sign lit up number 14, Boulevard Montmartre, attracting so many passersby that the barber's revenues soon doubled. A century later, neon is no longer just a sign; it is a mythic object--a metonymy of contemporary identity and a metaphor for the present, signifying the ubiquity of commerce and the tautology of hypermodernity. But perhaps the noble gas of neon whispers something more, something deeper? In ten short, poetic yet precise chapters, de Miranda explores the neon lights of the twentieth century. He considers, among other historical curiosities, the neon compulsions of the Italian Futurists; the Soviet program of "neonization"; the Nazi's deployment of neon for propaganda purposes; Baudelaire's "halo" and Benjamin's "aura"; neon as a gas and crystallized chaos; neon and power; neon and capitalism--all of this backlit by an original reading of Sartre's Being and Nothingness. This English edition has been thoroughly revised and adapted from the French edition, L'礙tre et le neon.

Ekphrasticism - Painted Words
Ekphrasis has generally been considered to be a rhetorical device in which one medium of art tries to relate to another medium by defining and interpreting it to the audience, through its illuminative liveliness. Through its rhetorical vividness it highlights what is happening, or what is shown and, enhances the original art, through synergy, with its description. Virtually any type of artistic medium may be the object or subject of ekphrasis. Given the right circumstances, any art may describe any other art. In this offering of "painted words" I have taken "poetic licence" firstly with the title "Ekphrasticism". Although not a word to be found in the dictionary, it seemed the perfect word for this book of ekphrastic poetry and paintings. I have taken further poetic licence with my interpretation of the visuals presented in the paintings. The artist extraordinaire of these paintings was generous enough to also allow me to rename some of the paintings to coincide with the emotions and words that came to me while viewing them. I thank Don Portelance for having such great and imaginative artistic talent and for allowing me the honour of writing to his paintings. Candice James

Dancing about Architecture
The unattributed quote,"Writing about music is like dancing about architecture" is a clever and provocative observation. It invites us to think about both the relationships and the marked divisions between distinct artforms, while at the same time conjuring something impossible into existence: who can read this without imagining the possibilities of an architectonic jig? The poets in this anthology each provide their own answers to questions about ekphrasis, demonstrating how art continues to initiate transformative encounters which both consolidate and illuminate our sense of our individual selves and our shared humanity. And the artworks of the poems themselves, too, provide the occasion of such encounters, inviting us to look anew at the artworks to which they respond and, significantly, to look anew at ourselves.

What We All Know, What We All Forget
This is a book about art: what it is, and how it is related to human beings and to the natural world. It is an attempt to understand something of the relationship of these things to the Ultimate Answer, however one believes, whether or not one "believes" in anything other than the physical. At the same time I want to ground the subject here among us, where we all stand, where it belongs- in the "common sense." The book attempts to awaken memory of connections and continuities often forgotten in our irresistible human compulsion to analyze and categorize, to name and to isolate and measure in order to study and ultimately to control. It is about what you know and can't know, about what you forget that you know and what a computing machine can never know. It is about reality, and about our attachment to, and slavish respect for, what is said about reality by people who are judged to be "experts." Our arts are aesthetic, of the senses. We are nature, and we make the arts. We experience them. We "appreciate" them. We may then talk about them. But we forget or ignore the crucial kind of thinking that does not involve talk in symbols, either words or numbers. It is the thinking that produces insight, intuition, creativity. It allows us to appreciate humor, innuendo, metaphor, and also greatness in the arts.

The Royal Inca Tunic
The hidden life of the greatest surviving work of Inca art The most celebrated Andean artwork in the world is a five-hundred-year-old Inca tunic made famous through theories about the meanings of its intricate designs, including attempts to read them as a long-lost writing system. But very little is really known about it. The Royal Inca Tunic reconstructs the history of this enigmatic object, presenting significant new findings about its manufacture and symbolism in Inca visual culture. Andrew James Hamilton draws on meticulous physical examinations of the garment conducted over a decade, wide-ranging studies of colonial Peruvian manuscripts, and groundbreaking research into the tunic's provenance. He methodically builds a case for the textile having been woven by two women who belonged to the very highest echelon of Inca artists for the last emperor of the Inca Empire on the eve of the Spanish invasion in 1532. Hamilton reveals for the first time that this imperial vestment remains unfinished and has suffered massive dye fading that transforms its appearance today, and he proposes a bold new conception of what this radiant masterpiece originally looked like. Featuring stunning photography of the tunic and Hamilton's own beautiful illustrations, The Royal Inca Tunic demonstrates why this object holds an important place in the canon of art history as a deft creation by Indigenous women artists, a reminder of the horrors of colonialism, and an emblem of contemporary Andean identity.

The Zen of Art
The Zen of Art starts with the premise that making art is akin to what happens when wind engages with a set of chimes. The chance encounter of source and instrument generates a song that enriches and elevates the moment. Author and artist Carolyn Schlam draws a parallel with what she calls the "Zen of Art"-the process of allowing creative expression to manifest in a natural and unencumbered fashion. Schlam tells her personal story of making art while applying the knowledge she has gained to live an "artful life" in chapters on courage, joy, beauty, love, and more. Whether practicing artists or not, readers will be encouraged to examine their own lives in the context of her insights. There is much to ponder and savor in this beautifully written, wise, and warm account of a life filled with art. The Zen of Art is a book to treasure as it paints a pathway to being your best self and living your best life.
Emergence
'Emergence' is the second book of collaboration between the Artist Nigel Moores and Poet Gordon Ellis, the first being 'A Common Ground'. The paintings do not illustrate the poems, nor are the poems about the paintings, but arise from a deep engagement with the milieu from which the painting emerge. Together, they create a space for the viewer/reader to enter and become an active participant.
Empire of Images
Rome was an empire of images, especially images that bolstered their imperial identity. Visual and material items portraying battles, myths, captives, trophies, and triumphal parades were particularly important across the Roman empire. But where did these images originate and what shaped them? Empire of Images explores the development of the Roman visual language of power in the Republic in Iberian Peninsula, the Gallic provinces, and Greece and Macedonia, centering the development of imperial imagery in overseas conquest. Drawing on a range of material evidence, this book argues that Roman imperial imagery developed through prolonged interaction with and adaptation by subjugated peoples. Despite their starring role in Roman imagery, the populations of Rome's provinces continuously reinterpreted and reimagined Roman images of power to navigate their membership in the new imperial community, and in doing so, contributed to the creation of a universal visual language that continues to shape how Rome is understood.
Horror That Haunts Us
Horror's pleasures fundamentally hinge on looking backward, either on destabilising trauma, or as a period of comfort and happiness which is undermined by threat. However, this stretches beyond the scares on our screens to the consumption and criticism of the monsters of our past. The horror films of our youth can be locations of psychological and social trauma, or the happy place we go back to for comfort when our lives become unsettled.Horror That Haunts Us: Nostalgia, Revisionism, and Trauma in Contemporary American Horror is a collection of essays that brings together multiple theoretical and critical approaches to consider the way popular horror films from the last fifty years communicate, embody, and rework our view of the past. Whether we look at our current relationship to the scary movies of decades ago as personal or cultural memory, the way historical and sociopolitical events and frameworks - especially traumas - reframe the way we look at our pasts, or even the way recent horror films and video games look back at our past (and the past of the genre itself) through a filter of experience and history, this collection will show the close relationship between nostalgia and popular horror. These essays also demonstrate a range of unique and diverse points of view from both established and emerging scholars on the subject of horror and the past.Edited by seasoned horror experts Karr獺 Shimabukuro and Wickham Clayton, Horror That Haunts Us is a book with the aim of examining why we return again and again to certain popular horror films, either as remakes or reboots or as the basis for pastiche and homage.
The Gothic Peckinpah
This book argues for the importance of Gothic in understanding one of the key elements within the films of Sam Peckinpah (1925-1984). Although occasionally noted in the past, the Gothic has been generally overlooked when most critics consider the work of Sam Peckinpah with the exception of the Freudian based Crucified Heroes (1979) by Terence Butler. This work not only examines the films made after that date, especially the often dismissed The Osterman Weekend (1983) and the two music videos he made for Julian Lennon, but also places the director within the context of the developing work on Gothic that has since appeared.Peckinpah has been identified as the director of one undisputed masterpiece, The Wild Bunch (1969). By focussing on the key role Gothic plays in most of the director's work, this book offers a way to see Peckinpah beyond The Wild Bunch and the Western, viewing him as a director who had the potential of evolving further, had circumstances permitted, to continue his critique of American life within the developing lens of the Gothic.
Appreciation Post
What does an art history of Instagram look like? Appreciation Post reveals how Instagram shifts long-established ways of interacting with images. Tara Ward argues Instagram is a structure of the visual, which includes not just the process of looking, but what can be seen and by whom. She examines features of Instagram use, including the effect of scrolling through images on a phone, the skill involved in taking an "Instagram-worthy" picture, and the desires created by following influencers, to explain how the constraints imposed by Instagram limit the selves that can be displayed on it. The proliferation of technical knowledge, especially among younger women, revitalizes on Instagram the myth of the masculine genius and a corresponding reinvigoration of a masculine audience for art. Ward prompts scholars of art history, gender studies, and media studies to attend to Instagram as a site of visual expression and social consequence. Through its insightful comparative analysis and acute close reading, Appreciation Post argues for art history's value in understanding the contemporary world and the visual nature of identity today.
