Kurt Jackson’s Rivers
From source to sea, artist Kurt Jackson's fascination with the rivers of the British Isles and beyond has endured throughout his life. This book explores, for the first time, Jackson's visual and written responses to the rivers that he has followed, from the continent of Africa to his home county of Cornwall. The diversity of the waterways that Jackson has come to know through his travels is echoed in his images, which capture habitats rich in flora and fauna. We can also discern the changing face of our rivers - choked by pollution and straining to survive the abuses inflicted since industrialisation restricted the natural flow of the network of blue lines that trickle, meander and run through our lands. Celebrating those networks common to us all, this important publication reminds us of the splendours of our rivers - powerful and fragile in equal measure.
Worship Reshaped by Interruption
This monograph presents a new understanding of how art fosters the liturgical principle of participation. It begins by highlighting the importance of liturgical participation and how it qualifies works of art intended for display in a liturgical environment, before discussing the key moments of conflict surrounding contemporary art in liturgical space over the last century. Following this historical review, the author brings Flemish theologian Lieven Boeve's hermeneutic of interruption into dialogue with principles of art identified as postmodern. In the process, he examines the theological significance of art that involves the viewer in an interruptive, ethical, and empathetic encounter with Christ in the Other. Drawing on several areas of study, including contextual theology, liturgical inculturation, art theory and philosophy, this study concludes by demonstrating how present-day strategies in art constructively challenge and vivify an assembly so as to advance their full, conscious and active participation in the liturgy.
Topographies of the Feminine
The female body as a territory saturated with meanings, sensations and symbologies. A territory inhabited by heritages and narratives. Sometimes land, sometimes water. A topography made up of erupting volcanoes and uninhabited spaces like a desert. A territory that echoes the deepest sound of an abyss, or the simplest melody of a stream dribbling over the rocks in its path. A female body-territory is made of flesh and becoming.
What Is to Be Done?
Addressing a century of change from late nineteenth-century realism to late 1970s Sots Art, this volume presents new research on how art making, criticism, and promotion responded dynamically to the fast-moving social, cultural, and political contexts of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. Case studies of artists reveal how figures such as Viktor Vasnetsov and Kazimir Malevich [Kazymyr Malevych] incorporated contemporary debates into their artworks and expanded their visual expressiveness. Analyses of writings by Wassily Kandinsky and Nikolai Punin illustrate the central role played by critics, theorists, and artists' societies in catalyzing new approaches. Lastly, essays focusing on the Society of Art Exhibitions (1874-83), the diverse displays at exhibitions in the Soviet era, and national themes in Ballets Russes productions rethink binaries between collaboration and enmity, between nationalism and internationalism, and between east and west in art presentation and promotion. This analytical triad is complemented by an epilogue by Russian emigre artist Pavel Otdelnov, who shares how his personal history and identity shape his art, especially since Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

The Theater of Refusal
Updated documentation of The Theater of Refusal on the exhibition's 30th anniversaryIn 1993, at the University of California, Irvine, Charles Gaines and Catherine Lord mounted a category-breaking exhibition of Black artists from different generations, working across Fluxus, Conceptualism, assemblage, photography and installation. Challenging the racializing of Black artists' work, the exhibition confronted the discourse around race difference in the United States by including excerpts of writing by art critics who had discussed the featured artists. On the 30th anniversary of this event, this publication reprints the eponymous 1993 volume documenting the show, which contained essays by Gaines, Lord and Berger, and the transcript of a roundtable of artists and writers. Reproducing images of the exhibition in color for the first time, this new edition augments the original publication with an essay by poet and scholar Fred Moten; recent conversations between Lord and Gaines; an interview with Gaines by Moten; and a new roundtable discussion moderated and edited by curator Jamillah James and Thomas (T.) Jean Lax.Artists include: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ren矇e Green, David Hammons, Ben Patterson, Sandra Rowe, Gary Simmons, Lorna Simpson, Carrie Mae Weems.

Picasso, Modigliani, and a Blind Man Crazy for Color. Illustrated by Picasso's Model and Muse, Sylvette David. Second, Revised Edition
In the early years of the twentieth century, a retired legal clerk in Montmartre named Leon Angely collected Picassos, Modiglianis, and Utrillos before any of these artists were well known. And he purchased many of these creations after his failing vision left him almost completely blind. Legend has it that Leon was assisted by a young girl who served as his "eyes," and based on her description of the work he would make his selections. This homage to the 'blind man who was crazy for color' uncovers previously unknown information about this important yet largely forgotten figure who inspired one of Picasso's most powerful engravings, featuring a 'Blind Minotaur' being led by a little girl. The book is illustrated with original artwork by Picasso's model and muse, Sylvette David, who posed for the painter when she was only nineteen years old, in 1954. Now eighty-seven, Sylvette credits Picasso with inspiring her to devote her life to painting. Her work is frequently exhibited in Europe, and in 2021 she was invited to lecture at the Musee Picasso is Paris.
Theology in the Mode of Monk
This captivating study engages two of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century: Karl Barth, the Swiss Protestant theologian, who constructed his theology "from above" and engaged the powers in the background of Nazi Germany, and James H. Cone, the father of Black Theology in America, who constructed his theology "from below" and confronted white racism--the most intractable issue in America's history. In this three-volume project, Carr employs the aesthetic thinking of the jazz legend Thelonious Monk to reconceptualize, restructure, and advance the theologies of Barth and Cone. In this final volume, Carr appeals to Thelonious Monk's tune "Misterioso" as the analogical framework for exploring the freedom of God as the melodic foundation for black liberation. Monk's mode of musical thinking encourages the jazz artist in us all to play in the mystery of God's freedom as the true ground for living freely within the world of the principalities and powers.

Graffiti in the urban context of the city of S瓊o Carlos
The aim of this book is to study the artistic and aesthetic expression of urban graffiti, specifically in the city of S瓊o Carlos/SP, based on contextualising the historical process of graffiti in Brazil and around the world, addressing its importance as a cultural movement, socio-cultural resistance, a vehicle for communication and a work of street art.We also researched the relationship between graffiti and Sanca Hip Hop, an event that has taken place every November since 2007, in partnership with the Black movement and the S瓊o Carlos/SP Hip Hop collective. In this study, we sought to contribute to an understanding of graffiti interventions. The theoretical framework of Lara (1996), Costa (1994, 2000) and Zamboni (2001) was used as a basis for the research.

In this three-volume project, Carr employs the aesthetic thinking of the jazz legend Thelonious Monk to reconceptualize, restructure, and advance the theologies of Barth and Cone. In this second volume, Carr appeals to Monk's tune "'Round Midnight" as the analogical framework for articulating the meaning between Christ, the cantus firmus, and the sociopolitical histories of Karl Barth and James Cone. Monk's encouragement to "improvise on the melody" is heard as the melodic foundation for a new form of christological reflection.
Jaume Plensa
Acclaimed Spanish visual artist, sculptor, designer and engraver Jaume Plensa is renowned for his ability to weave spirituality, corporeality, and collective memory into his sculptures and installations, using a wide range of materials. Many of his iconic sculptures can be found in public spaces, in some of the most evocative places in the world. The city of Leuven now joins this list with the acquisition by KU Leuven of The Four Elements, the first permanent sculpture by Jaume Plensa in Belgian public space. The sculpture The Four Elements consists of two parts in bronze, located in two places, the gallery of the KU Leuven University Library and the newly created St-Rapha禱l Square. The first part, Fire, commemorates the resurrection of the University Library after the devastating fire of World War I. Water, Earth, Air, the second part, rises like a totem pole on a new urban site that is a meeting point for health care and medicine. This collection of essays documents how the two parts of the sculpture and its two sites represent a broader trinity of interaction and togetherness: between the university and the city and its public spaces, between research and art, between the study of health (in this case the brain) and organizing care.Contributing authors: St矇phane Symons (KU Leuven), Jaume Plensa (artist), Johan Wagemans (KU Leuven), Mark Derez (KU Leuven), Erik Thys (KU Leuven, UPC KU Leuven, LUCA School of Arts), Tom Van Imschoot (LUCA School of Arts, KU Leuven), Rebecca Gysen (City of Leuven), Karen Landuyt (City of Leuven), Stefanie Lambrecht (City of Leuven, LUCA School of Arts), Geert Bouckaert (KU Leuven)

Politics simple explained
Politics has been difficult to understand since its beginnings. In one hand because of the philosophical, social and academic approach of last centuries, and on the other hand because politicians and the interest groups they represent have no interest to make it comprehensible and easy to discuss and digest.Presented in simple language, social media like format, the author offers the IMDb of politics, with simple concepts, pictures, likes and dislikes to guide you to see politics the way your human and citizen condition must see it, with responsibility, awareness and conviction that your vote is your voice but only when given to the cause that really shares your own interests, as planet earth inhabitant. If you feel that the planet is in danger because of global warming, if you are pro-immigration, anti-war, pro-LGBTQ, pro-civil rights, if you are not NAZI-Ku-Kux-Klan-Proud Boy, if you are carrying student debt, if you are a worker, if you are human, if you know that States charge taxes in order to distribute wealth, if you have ever heard about the Social Contract, you may be a Socialist, there is nothing wrong with it! Do not panic, you are not the Venezuelan Dictatorship, nor they are Socialists. Just look inside to fact check it.
