This anniversary publication presents a careful selection of Fong's work tracing his artistic career and stylistic development over the last sixty years. It is a testament to the master's contribution to late-twentieth-century Chinese painting in a global context. Fong was born in Henan province and received his formal art training at the Political Cadre College in Taiwan and graduated in 1954. He developed his style while living and practicing in California. Most of his works are abstract paintings that blend influences from Chinese and Western artistic traditions, creating a unique form of cross-cultural expression. His works serve as a bridge between Eastern and Western art, incorporating elements from both traditions and fostering dialogue between various artistic perspectives. Art and the Experience of the Divine
How do people find faith? For centuries the focus of the church has been on providing arguments that might persuade a person rationally that faith is plausible. This book invites people to find faith through experience. By taking a great work of art, the reader is invited to meditate and pray through that art to God. Faith is primarily an experience of the heart, not an argument that appeals to the head. The book opens with a framing case for the centrality of the visual arts as a vehicle to experience the divine. Engaging with the literature, a distinctive case is made for a "spiritual theory of art," according to which art makes spiritual reality present to the seeker. Then there are twenty-two devotional reflections on art that show how properly reading a painting or a drawing can open up fresh ways of thinking about the divine that are compelling and powerful. Thus, we are guided towards seeing truly great art as a focus for prayer and meditation.

America went from a place of segregation and inequality to one of legal desegregation in both civil society and the military. World history is replete with the stories of love, personal endurance, and courage of those who sacrificed their lives to make the world a better place for us all. Those people acted on hope. That is why the title of this book is Acting on Hope.
For Dear Life
A visual study of how artists have shaped responses to disability from the 1960s to the Covid era. In recent years, the art world has seen an explosion of activity confronting issues of illness, disability, and the vulnerability of the human body. This development, which was set in motion by disability justice movements of the twenty-first century, accelerated at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Contemporary artists with disabilities and chronic illnesses have produced influential bodies of art and writing, seeking to highlight relations of mutual dependence and practices of care. These artists have dramatically expanded discourse about access, while reframing disability as a refusal to conform to the pace, architecture, and economic conditions of contemporary life. For Dear Life explores how this turn was preceded by the work of artists and activists beginning in the 1960s and 1970s. Informed by intersecting movements that included civil rights, antiwar, women's and gay liberation, and disability rights, artists of that era represented the body in works that merged the personal and political. This book, and the accompanying exhibition, surveys artistic responses to vulnerability, illness, impairment, and forms of unruly embodiment, tracing artistic legacies that have shaped contemporary currents in art. Gathering an intergenerational group of artists from across the United States, the project illuminates connections among art practices, social movements, and medical events of the past and present.
Catesby's Natural History
A beautiful reproduction of naturalist Mark Catesby's flora and fauna illustrations of North America and the Caribbean. Mark Catesby was an eighteenth-century naturalist and artist whose work on the natural history of North America and the Caribbean still resonates today. Drawing on extensive new research and unprecedented access to largely unpublished private archives of photographs, art, and ephemera, Matt Lodder offers a new perspective on the history of commercial tattooing in Europe and the United States, beginning even before it emerged as a recognizable profession in the mid-nineteenth century. In the process, he shows that the art of tattoo has long been both practiced and commissioned by individuals across economic, gender, and class divides; he also examines the stylistic trends that have shaped tattoo's development as an art form over its history. Theology in the Mode of Monk
This captivating study engages two of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century: Karl Barth, the Swiss Protestant theologian who constructed his theology "from above" and engaged the powers in the background of Nazi Germany, and James H. Cone, the father of Black Theology in America, who constructed his theology "from below" and confronted white racism--the most intractable issue in America's history. In this three-volume project, Carr employs the aesthetic thinking of the jazz legend Thelonious Monk to reconceptualize, restructure, and advance the theologies of Barth and Cone. This first volume appeals to the Bebop tune "Epistrophy" as the analogical framework for (re)conceptualizing the historical form and hermeneutical backgrounds of Karl Barth and James H. Cone. Monk's mode of musical thinking establishes the aesthetic theological architecture Carr uses to reiterate and reimagine the revolutionary theological contributions of Barth and Cone.

In Flesh and Fabric: The Raiment of the Passion in a Crucifixion by Pietro Lorenzetti, Jeffrey F. Hamburger explores the historical context of this panel as well as the subtleties of Pietro's painting technique and iconographic imagination, enriching not only our understanding of one of the most innovative artists of the Trecento but also of Italian painting during one of its most generative periods. The pragmatics of creative processes
Pragmatics studies the aims of communication by revealing the speaker's intentions indirectly through the statements made. It focuses on a study of the processes by which we understand what is implied. It is related to the procedure used by director and illustrator Hayao Miyazaki to create visual narratives, taken from the making of his animated film entitled: Chihiro's Journey (2001) by Ghibli Studios. Inspired by the knowledge he acquires in the social sphere, in folk tales, in the interactions between individuals, he goes on to shape his narratives.
