Material Selves
What do Persian robes of honour, 20th-century still-life painting, fur garments, and 18th-century porcelain all have in common? Prized, possessed and modelled, they highlight the deep connections we share with cultural objects. Establishing new connections between people and things via artistic media and material culture, this highly interdisciplinary volume brings together both established and emerging scholars in the fields of art history, material culture, museum and heritage studies and literary studies to investigate the intersection of the personal with the material. Raising vital questions of cultural identity, belonging and selfhood, Material Selves is the first book of its kind to consider the relationship between people and things across transcultural and transhistorical contexts. It employs innovative methodologies across ten chapters and critically expands on current models for understanding the dynamic relationship between people and things by tracing the central role objects have played in the construction, creation and performance of identity throughout history. Structured around four key sections exploring biography and narrative; adornment and ornament; reclamation and intervention; and subjects and objects, the volume presents a global selection of case studies that explore, amongst other things, Margaret Olley's enduring fame, the significance of the Khil'a in Safavid Persia and early modern Europe, and 17th-century French painter Charles LeBrun's royal portraiture. Fusing these with contemporary theories of identity, the contributors provide analyses informed by posthumanism, the environmental humanities, race and gender. At the same time, they confront vital questions of identity, agency, and materiality, and highlight the way in which we use objects to tell stories, construct myths and make sense of our place in the world. In doing so, the book illuminates a wide range of cultural and chronological settings whilst giving close attention to the mobility of people and things between, across, and through time and place.
The pragmatics of creative processes
Pragmatics studies the aims of communication by revealing the speaker's intentions indirectly through the statements made. It focuses on a study of the processes by which we understand what is implied. It is related to the procedure used by director and illustrator Hayao Miyazaki to create visual narratives, taken from the making of his animated film entitled: Chihiro's Journey (2001) by Ghibli Studios. Inspired by the knowledge he acquires in the social sphere, in folk tales, in the interactions between individuals, he goes on to shape his narratives.
The Social World of Galleries
This book presents the first detailed study of the place of contemporary art galleries and gallerists, especially within the art markets of Europe and the United States. Based on the author's field research carried out for over a decade, and combining ethnographic material with quantitative data, the book reveals the major role galleries play in the creation of art value. Despite being pillars of the art market, there has been very little in-depth research on galleries, especially when compared with the analysis of artists, critics, and dealers. Written by a sociologist who has spent a decade as an art critic, the book builds on work conducted by art historian and sociologist Raymonde Moulin from the 1960s to the 1990s. Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews with those working in the field today, it provides a thorough and up-to-date analysis of what contemporary art galleries really are: the spaces they occupy both physically and online; their position within gallery 'districts'; their relation to art fairs and biennials; and how friendship with clients is built and trends within the business, in turn illuminating the hierarchized structure of the sector. The book concludes by addressing a significant gap in data on the art market by providing a sociological ranking of international contemporary art galleries. Good Swastika, Bad Swastika
The swastika is a graphic figure that has been both revered and reviled in the world. Revered as a holy symbol in India and other cultures in the East. Reviled as a symbol associated with cultural elitism, genocide, warfare, and plunder in the West. However, there are four main swastikas. The arms can turn right or left. The orientation can be to the cardinal directions (the sides being north-south-east-west); or can be to the intermediate directions (the sides being northeast-southwest-southeast-northwest). The directions in the Vedic tradition have specific qualities that represent the eight primary functions in life. Using these qualities, it is possible to obtain a detailed symbolic value for each of the four versions of the swastika. One swastika represents the Vedic ideal, fulfilling all aspects of life in progress and fulfillment. One seems to represent capitalistic society. A third exhibits the values of nomadic groups. The fourth has the qualities that were seen in the Nazi regime in Germany, where it was its ever-present insignia. Readers can judge for themselves the validity of the logic and the conclusions presented. At the very least, the book gives an opportunity to think on the ways life can be organized and lived.
Theology in the Mode of Monk
This captivating study engages two of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century: Karl Barth, the Swiss Protestant theologian, who constructed his theology "from above" and engaged the powers in the background of Nazi Germany, and James H. Cone, the father of Black Theology in America, who constructed his theology "from below" and confronted white racism--the most intractable issue in America's history. What does the language of color tell us? Where does one color begin and another end? Is it a radiant visual stimulus, an intangible function of light, or a material substance to be molded and arrayed? Color is fundamental to art, yet so diverse that it has hardly ever been studied in a comprehensive way. The Narrowest Path
A strategic reconstruction of modern German thought from the standpoint of aesthetic theory, The Narrowest Path reveals the characteristically modern, revolutionary project of freedom-as-autonomy to be unresolvably antinomic. Basing himself on four seminal texts by Kleist, Hegel, Marx, and Adorno, Mehrgan develops four basic figures: the literary, the person, the republic, and the artwork. All flourished during the long period between the French Revolution and the aftermath of the Second World War in Europe. The key antagonist is the rule of capital, paradoxically enabling self-determination and thwarting it. Still present in contemporary revolutionary experiments, this daunting conflict, the book argues, shows itself best in the aesthetic -- but the resolution lies elsewhere.
The Brasilia for People project
This publication is about an experiment involving the city, culture and the internet; with the aim of involving society in a specific academic research project to help complete a master's dissertation. The dissertation was completed and the experiment, entitled "Bras穩lia por Pessoas", took a back seat, but was not forgotten. As a project that involves cultural policies, with a social bias, I present its formal bases, methodology and expected results so that it can be disseminated, replicated and developed at other levels. The main contribution is the involvement of citizens in the project's realization processes, which makes it a collaborative social experiment, involving citizens in urban policy proposals that involve culture and society.
Urban Aesthetics
The polysemy of the visual arts in the urban image is based on the perception of beauty and its contrasts with technological evolution. In this way, the reason and meaning of artistic beauty in relation to nature is sought based on Kantian thought. Thus, art and technological evolution are analyzed, which make new aesthetic experiences possible at the beginning of this century and expectations for the future, in terms of determination under the concept of innovation. Marx's reflections on freedom are added to Hegelian philosophy. This creativity in cultural praxis, by making art the object of analysis in the socio-cultural theories of Adorno and Benjamin, stimulates the more recent theories of Morin and Habermas. In addition to the preliminary questions in contemporary aesthetics, we have this question: what would designate and condition aesthetics in the face of everyday experiences in metropolitan areas and in the world of the arts? Specifically, what are the reasons for art becoming one of the "unthinkable" practices today? An art, according to Adorno, of the Entkunstung, which would no longer make people dream or would be a vicious dream.

Arne Quinze: Are We the Aliens_

Pompeii in the Visual and Performing Arts
This volume examines the influence that Pompeii and, to a lesser extent, Herculaneum had on the visual and performing arts in Spain and countries across South America. Covering topics from architecture, painting and decorative arts to theatre, dance and photography, the reader will gain insight into the reception of classical antiquity through the analysis of the close cultural ties between both sides of the Atlantic, in the past and the present. Each contribution has been written by a specialist researcher participating in the project, 'The Reception and Influence of Pompeii and Herculaneum in Spain and Ibero-America', funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PGC2018-093509-B-I00 Ministry of Science and Innovation/AEI/ERDF/EU). Pompeii in the Visual and Performing Arts begins by examining the influence of Pompeiian architecture in Spain in paintings that depict scenes inspired by Roman scenes and also buildings modelled on those of Pompeii. Next, the influence of Pompeii crosses the Atlantic to Mexico with a study of the archaeological site's influence on the visual and performing arts. An exploration of the elitist use of the ancient past in architecture is seen in Chilean architecture, which leads onto an investigation of the new art styles that emerged in the 19th century. Later chapters look into the influence of the ancient frescoes and the use of modern plaster casts of statues. The final chapters are devoted to comics and photography, which also make a study of the places in Latin America nicknamed 'Pompeii' in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Not only were we travelling to Montenegro from different parts of the world - Denis from Paris and me from Canberra - but both of us wondered: how would we get on. The idea was for the Bureau to collect dream testimonies in whatever form, not only to preserve and analyse them but also to give active expression to them in artistic processes. The publication shows how the practices of the avant-gardes blurred the boundaries between dream and reality, between the traditional, passive notion of the archive and the idea of active, innovative artistic experiment--and thus ultimately also between the past, the present and possible futures. Works and documents made before, during and after World War II shed light on the methods of international artists and the global network they were involved in. They are complemented by diverse reflections on global protest movements and the traumas of war, thus connecting to everyday experiences in a Europe beset by warfare.

Based on a very rich and impressive selection of 19th and 20th century ship posters from Europe, the book explores in the accompanying fascinating essays three very different types of shipping and sea voyages: a) coastal shipping for the transportation of passengers and freight in the wider Mediterranean, b) steamshipping across the oceans for the European mass migration to the USA, Canada, Latin America and Australia, and c) cruise shipping in the Mediterranean for tourism and recreation. All texts, including an extensive introduction by the editor, are written by Greek historians specializing in maritime history. After thourough research, the posters included were selected from major German, French, Austrian, Swiss, Italian as well as American and Greek public and private collections. A total of 300, reproduced beautifully, they help the reader to follow the narratives and imagine vividly the facts and stories told. Originally, of course, the posters aimed to attract the public to a safe - and in some cases magical - voyage to unknown destinations. This original bilingual edition (English and Greek) offers original and fascinating material on who, how and for what purpose people crossed the Mediterranean and the oceans in the past two centuries. It sheds light to the Greek experience in particular and focuses on the significant contribution of Greek shipping companies to sea travelling.

Digital Embodiment and the Arts
A timely examination of the use of emerging technologies in the arts in recent decades. This book explores the notion of embodied experience from the first wave of virtual reality through the current use of mixed, augmented, and extended realities.
