Nordic Art and Way of Life
An exploration of the development of the art scene, its socio-political context, and the role of the fine arts in nineteenth-century Nordic society This book captures for the first time the full story of Nordic art and its corresponding way of life from 1820 to 1920. Amply illustrated, this publication discusses a wide range of artists, regardless of gender, and how they related to the European art scene. The authors convey the essence of Nordic art by providing insight into the history of public and private collections, art education, artists' communities, the role of children's books illustrations, and the identity of emerging national states in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. A selection of themes are reviewed, including living with nature, everyday life, artists' portraits, family life, cityscapes, and Nordic mythology. The publication is edited by two experienced museum professionals from Finland and Sweden, who have published widely on the subject and curated numerous international exhibitions. Contributors include leading experts from all Nordic countries, as well as the UK. Distributed for Mercatorfonds Exhibition Schedule: TBD
How Painting Happens (and Why It Matters)
Painting is an almost inconceivably ancient activity that remains vigorously alive in the twenty-first century. Every successful painting creates a new world, which we inhabit for as long as we care to look at it. Paintings can incorporate profound ideas and paradoxes that can be grasped without words. For those who dedicate themselves to it, the art of painting can become an all-consuming, lifelong obsession. It is a subject on which painters themselves are often the most incisive commentators.Martin Gayford's riveting and richly illustrated book deftly brings together numerous artists' voices, past and present. It draws on a trove of conversations conducted over more than three decades with artists including Frank Auerbach, Gillian Ayres, Frank Bowling, Cecily Brown, Peter Doig, Lucian Freud, Katharina Fritsch, David Hockney, Claudette Johnson, R. B. Kitaj, Lee Ufan, Paula Rego, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley, Jenny Saville, Frank Stella, Luc Tuymans, Zeng Fanzhi, and many more. Here too is Vincent van Gogh on Rembrandt, John Constable on Titian, Francis Bacon on Vel獺zquez, Lee Krasner on Pollock, and Jean-Michel Basquiat on Picasso. We hear the personal reflections of these artists on their chosen medium; how and why they paint; how they came to the practice; the influence of fellow painters; and how they find creative sustenance and inspiration in their art. How Painting Happens crosses the centuries to give us a wealth of insights into the endlessly compelling phenomenon of painters and painting.
"Arte em Cena"
Based on the foundations of (auto)biographical research (JOSSO, 2010; DELORY-MOMBERGER, 2008), we used the methodological procedure called Biographical Reflective Circle-CRB (OLINDA, 2009; 2010) to construct the educational biographies (DOMINIC?, 1988) of seven young people who took part in the Art on Stage group of the Paulo and Estev瓊o Spiritist Youth Group in Fortaleza, between 2000 and 2011. The aim of this work is to understand the significance of Spiritist Art in the formation of young people, assessing its role in the production of knowledge and meaning in life. The material produced at the CRB was treated following the guidelines of discursive textual analysis (MORAES, 2003) so that we could get to the production of knowledge and experiential learning. Spiritist Art provided these young people with a wide-ranging formative experience in which friendships, difficulties, memories, the feeling of family, the discovery of youth, smiles, tears, roots, challenges, overcoming, the road, the stage, joy, work, are just examples of the precious marks of an experience that changed their lives in a way that only their own narratives can express and represent.
The Aesthetics of Digital Montage
Tracing the recent changes to the technology of film editing, this book offers an account of the aesthetics of digital montage. It is commonly argued that the changes to the technical apparatus of editing, the emergence of new systems for digital editing, have altered the basic identity or ontology of the cinema as an art. Such claims, it is argued in this book, are based on a misunderstanding of the relation between technology and technique, and more generally between the technical and the aesthetic. Applying recent theories of art, and employing specific concepts from philosophical aesthetics, an account of cinematic art is offered that can better accommodate the kinds of technical changes that have occurred in recent decades, with the advent of computer technology in the cinema. An aesthetics of digital montage is presented as part of a more general proposal for a theory of technical change in the cinema.
Murals and the City
This book provides a cross-urban account on murals, street art, and public art in cities around the globe. It reviews the rules, policies, and regulations that frame how murals and street art are managed across a range of cities and contexts. Murals and street art serve as dynamic stages for communities and individuals with multiple and sometimes opposing identities, with the potential to cause disturbance and conflict. The book investigates the challenges they present to cities and city administrations, and the policies and practices that are crafted to address them. The global landscape of today's mural policies is discussed comparatively across a range of cities, and the impact of written rules, unofficial practices, and institutional arrangements on city spaces, walls, and surfaces is examined. An important contribution to this growing field, the book will appeal to students, practitioners, and scholars with an interest in public art, municipal governance, public space management, cultural policy, and urban design.

And on to stately pile Lower Loxley - the Pargetters are proud of their centuries-old heritage, but how did Elizabeth arrive there, after her own turbulent early years, at odds with her family? This knowing excavation of Ambridge delights in the follies and everyday mischief of the inhabitants of England's most famous village. Location by location, via the Bull and the occasional barn, the narrator takes us behind closed doors and picks up on all sorts of whispers around money, births, deaths and marriages, and romance and sex (often in inappropriate places ...) In this canny, in-world exploration of Britain's best-loved soap, we see how every relationship, each personal triumph and disaster, and all the hopes and dreams of a community over the years are folded into the personal stories of the characters we know so well today.

The Gatherers
In a time of unfettered waste, global artists contend with excess and its effectsAccompanying the major exhibition at MoMA PS1, The Gatherers brings together original texts on issues relating to waste, accumulation and excess. In a time when social and political lives are shaped by the glut of garbage and information, the exhibition draws methodological parallels between 14 artists across four continents. This compendium features full-color illustrations of their artworks, which span sculptural installation, assemblage, painting, video and performance. In a longform essay, Ruba Katrib contextualizes their practices within the promises and failures of neoliberalism, the shifting constructions of East and West and the explosion of new technologies. Additionally, the catalog situates their practices within larger art historical trends, from Greek as?rotos 簷ikos and Dutch still lifes, to 20th-century Surrealism and postwar assemblage. With newly commissioned texts on each of the participating artists by leading curators, theorists and writers from across the globe, the catalog offers incisive critical writing on issues in contemporary art and the 21st century.Artists include: Karimah Ashadu, Tolia Astakhishvili, Miho Dohi, Andro Eradze, He Xiangyu, Samuel Hindolo, Geumhyung Jeong, Klara Liden, Jean Katambayi Mukendi, Nick Relph, Selma Selman, Ser Serpas, Emilija Skarnulyte.

With contributions from artists working in digital media alongside essays by scientists and cultural theorists, this comprehensive guide looks at all aspects of this new frontier, from "analytical AI" to "generative AI."Artists include: Christian Marclay, Trevor Paglen, Hito Steyerl, Julian Charri癡re, Alexia Achilleos, Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert, Nora Al-Badri, Patsy Baudoin, Nick Montfort.

The Aesthetics of Rule and Resistance
Effective visual communication has become an essential strategy for grassroots political activists, who use images to publicly express resistance and make their claims visible in the struggle for political power. However, this "aesthetics of resistance" is also employed by political and economic elites for their own purposes, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish from the "aesthetics of rule." Through illuminating case studies of street art in Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Caracas, and Mexico City, The Aesthetics of Rule and Resistance explores the visual strategies of persuasion and meaning-making employed by both rulers and resisters to foster self-legitimization, identification, and mobilization.

Digital Art: 1960s to Now explores ideas of artificial intelligence, computer animation, simulation, and cybernetics. Global in reach, it features historic works from pioneering artists such as Analivia Cordeiro, Eduardo Mac Entyre, Manfred Mohr, Vera Molnar, and Frieder Nake, alongside renowned contemporary artists such as Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, Harm van den Dorpel, Trevor Paglen, Anna Ridler, and Nye Thompson.
Analysis and Comparison of Recordings
This paper offers a comprehensive study of Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude and Fugue in A Minor, BWV 543, focusing on various recordings to gain deeper insights into Bach's performance practices. The research begins by exploring the historical context and structure of the work, followed by an analysis of articulation techniques used by different organists, highlighting commonalities and differences in their interpretations. While Bach's organ works are of lasting artistic value, the lack of articulation markings in the original scores, coupled with the passage of time, makes determining the most authentic performance style challenging. To address this, it is essential to study the historical context and the score itself. A thorough understanding of organ repertoire is crucial, and listening to other performers' interpretations is an effective learning tool. However, after reviewing multiple recordings, it is clear that each organist presents a unique understanding of the piece. Therefore, this paper offers detailed analyses of several recordings, providing valuable insights for those studying this work.

Outback
Focusing on the incidence of the 'Westerns' film genre in the 120-odd years of Australian cinema history, exploring how the American genre has been adapted to the changing Australian social, political and cultural contexts of their production, including the shifting emphases in the representation of the Indigenous population. The idea for the book came to the author while he was writing two recent articles. One was an essay for Screen Education on the western in Australian cinema of the 21st century; the other piece was the review of a book entitled Film and the Historian, for the online journal Inside Story . Between the two, he saw the interesting prospect of a book-length study of the role of the western genre in Australia's changing political and cultural history over the last century - and the ways in which film can, without didacticism, provide evidence of such change. Key matters include the changing attitudes to and representation of Indigenous peoples and of women's roles in Australian Westerns. When one considers that the longest narrative film then seen in Australia, and quite possibly the world was Charles Tait's The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906), it is clear that Australia has some serious history in the genre, and Kelly has ridden again in Justin Kurzel's 2020 adaptation of Peter Carey's The True History of the Kelly Gang.

More Than the Eyes
Food as social ritual, personal liberation and spiritual alchemy: from Alison Knowles and Adrian Piper to Agnes Denes and Andy WarholIn More Than the Eyes, writer Ellen Mara De Wachter considers the ways in which food, when used as a material in contemporary art, confronts, subverts and ultimately brings us to our senses. Focusing on artists working between 1960 and 2000, the book shows how we have become restricted by a hierarchy that values sight and reason above other senses, and how encounters with food in art can help us break this bind. By putting food at the center of the highly visual art world, the artists in this book quicken a range of sensations beyond visual perception, helping us access and liberate aspects of our experience that have been ignored or suppressed. Topics include Carolee Schneemann's performance pieces using meat; the way in which Hannah Wilke rejects the imperative for women to be "sweet"; Zoe Leonard's exploration of decomposition as process; Adrian Piper's conceptual work incorporating hamburgers; the SoHo artists' restaurant FOOD; Agnes Denes' wheat field near Wall Street; and how other artists, such as Sarah Lucas and Andy Warhol, introduce the iconography, foods and desires of the working class into the rarefied environment of the gallery and museum.London-based writer Ellen Mara De Wachter is the author of Co-Art: Artists on Creative Collaboration and the coauthor of Great Women Artists (both published by Phaidon). Her writing has featured in publications including Frieze, Art Quarterly, Art Monthly, the World of Interiors and the White Review.

The connotations of the female body in the art of Ana Mendieta
This paper aims to examine the different connotations of the female body that Ana Mendieta represented in her works. With this objective, a state of the question is carried out in which the meanings of the female body that different authors have investigated in the figure of the artist are reviewed. In this sense, the perceptions of the female body that Mendieta represented and that these researchers have analyzed are presented and developed in the aforementioned state of the question divided into 4 blocks of recurring themes in her artistic proposals that show her perspectives on the female corporeality. Relevant data on Mendieta's biography are also included, as well as the historical and artistic context in which she developed her life and artistic career. Finally, testimonies that the artist expressed during her lifetime are added to this work. In addition, we have been advised by people linked to the MUSAC's exhibition project Ana Mendieta in Search of the Origin.
Performance
This book presents a theoretical-critical journey about the meaning of the limit of the artist's body in performance through the experience of performances by the artist Rafael Falk. To this end, the concepts of body, limit and event are problematized using references from Art and Philosophy, seeking to bring these concepts closer to the process of mapping the face-to-face performances carried out by this young artist. For the theoretical basis of this study, we used a transdisciplinary perspective based on the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Baruch de Espinosa, addressing references and concepts that are interconnected and related to the subject of the research, which is inserted in the field of Visual Arts. The artists who make up the references for this study are Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic and Regina Jos矇 Galindo, whose poetics enable us to problematize the performances of the artist Rafael Falk.
Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris, 1910-1930
The first publication of its kind, connecting a constellation of artists working at the forefront of abstraction in the early 20th centuryOrphism emerged among a cosmopolitan group of artists active in Paris in the early 1910s, as the innovations of modern life radically altered conceptions of time and space. Engaged with ideas of simultaneity in kaleidoscopic compositions, these artists investigated the transformative possibilities of color, form and motion. Often featuring disks of brilliant color, their work evoked multisensory experiences. When pushed to its limits, Orphism signaled total abstraction. The poet Guillaume Apollinaire, a contemporary, coined the term "Orphism" to describe this move away from Cubism, toward a physically and spiritually transcendent art. His concept referred back to the Greek mythological poet and lyre player Orpheus, whose music thwarted death. The first in-depth examination of the Orphist avant-garde, this revelatory exhibition catalog contextualizes Orphism, tracing its roots, exploring its cross-disciplinary reach and considering its transnational reverberations across 16 illustrated texts by a multigenerational group of authors from different fields. Incisive essays offer new perspectives, delineating Orphism's connection to music, dance and poetry, and investigating the historical and cultural circumstances that shaped its ethos. More than 90 artworks in multiple mediums are punctuated by micro-narratives that view select artists through the Orphist lens, presenting original scholarship on well-known figures such as Robert Delaunay, Sonia Delaunay, Frantisek Kupka and Francis Picabia while also illuminating lesser-known ones such as Mainie Jellett, Morgan Russell and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.

Horizontal Together
Horizontal together tells the story of 1960s art and queer culture in New York through the overlapping circles of Andy Warhol, underground filmmaker Jack Smith and experimental dance star Fred Herko. Taking a pioneering approach to this intersecting cultural milieu, the book uses a unique methodology that draws on queer theory, dance studies and the analysis of movement, deportment and gesture to look anew at familiar artists and artworks, but also to bring to light queer artistic figures' key cultural contributions to the 1960s New York art world. Illustrated with rarely published images and written in clear and fluid prose, Horizontal together will appeal to specialists and general readers interested in the study of modern and contemporary art, dance and queer history.
Beyond the Happening
The Happenings that burst on to the late 1950s cultural scene were rapidly declared pass矇 and even 'dead', but this book reveals how an international network of artists continued to develop their premises into the late 1960s and 1970s, transforming the form into an interdisciplinary vehicle for studying interpersonal relations.
Surface design
This book is about how textile surface design can add value to party fashion. It is based on the current party fashion market, which reflects the aesthetic conception of designers, based on unique, exclusive pieces based on the profile of each client, taking into account personal taste, physical type and even the culture of a locality. On the other hand, fashion design is rethinking the design needs and structures of the fashion party, going through an industrial process and visualising mass production. In this sense, the strategies, the identity of the product, the brand and the environments seek to innovate in ideas and objectives, believing that the result can be more efficient. So this work aims to highlight the surface design to be applied by means of printing, embroidery and the application of lace and ornaments, seeking agility in production and at the same time adding value to the product.

Poor Artists
This debut book by the popular collaborative team--heralded as one of the first truly new critical voices of the 21st century-- blends real-world experience and poignant storytelling into a provocative and heartfelt portrait of the life of an artist today. At a moment in which working as a professional artist is an increasingly unattainable luxury, art criticism duo The White Pube investigate why so many artists try anyway. Labeled "the Diet Prada of the art world" by British Vogue, in Poor Artists, writers Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad ridicule a contemporary art world that has turned art into artworks, art schools into art universities, and creative expression into cut-throat competition.Poor Artists follows aspiring artist Quest Talukdar as she embarks on a surreal journey into the creative industry, where she must decide whether she cares more about success or staying true to herself. Featuring dialogue from anonymous interviews with real people who have all had to ask themselves the same question-- including a Turner Prize winner or two, a recluse, a Venice Biennale fraudster, a communist messiah, a ghost, and a literal knight--The White Pube tell the story of art like never before.
