Early Modern Print Media and the Art of Observation
Early modern printmakers trained observers to scan the heavens above as well as faces in their midst. Peter Apian printed the Cosmographicus Liber (1524) to teach lay astronomers their place in the cosmos, while also printing practical manuals that translated principles of spherical astronomy into useful data for weather watchers, farmers, and astrologers. Physiognomy, a genre related to cosmography, taught observers how to scrutinize profiles in order to sum up peoples' characters. Neither Albrecht D羹rer nor Leonardo escaped the tenacious grasp of such widely circulating manuals called practica. Few have heard of these genres today, but the kinship of their pictorial programs suggests that printers shaped these texts for readers who privileged knowledge retrieval. Cultivated by images to become visual learners, these readers were then taught to hone their skills as observers. This book unpacks these and other visual strategies that aimed to develop both the literate eye of the reader and the sovereignty of images in the early modern world.

The Transformative Power of Tattoo
This unique collection of fiction, nonfiction and poetry brings together a diverse group of writers who delve into tattoos in terms of class, body image, history, empowerment and transformations. It's an investigation into why people get tattoos and how they transform a person's life. Our 19 contributors are debut and award-winning. Their work includes memoir, transgressive fiction, horror, magical realism, sci-fi, literary fiction, poetry and personal essays. We have published a number of them in our previous anthologies including Liam Hogan, Karla Linn Merrifield, Claire Askew, Julian Bishop and Michal Kamil Piotrowski. Here's an excerpt: "Growing up, tattoos, alongside piercings and brightly coloured hair, were absolutely anathema. The reasons were many and varied: I would be rejected by polite society; if I ever got arrested, I would be easily identifiable by the authorities; no-one would ever hire me; it would signify emotional instability and arrested development; I would be perceived as a n'er-do-well, a reprobate, a criminal; I should not disrespect my body in this way; it would attract the wrong kind of associates... I could probably keep adding to this list of introjects and conditions of worth that shaped my own distorted beliefs about tattoos for many years." - Liz Beth TurnerHere's the full list of contributors: Claire Askew, Julian Bishop, Valerie Bence, Harriet Bradshaw, Maisie Brown, Meredith Davidson, Daniela Esposito, Callum Henderson, Liam Hogan, Erin Hosfield, Maria Jastrzębska, Di Lebowitz, Dominic Lyne, Louisa Mastromarino, Karla Linn Merrifield, Michal Kamil Piotrowski, Emily Ricard, Liz Beth Turner and Sabrina Woolf. We are delighted to share with you their take on the tattoo.xx guts
The A-B-C of Aesthetics
Leo Stein (1872-1947) was an influential art collector and critic. It has been Stein's ironic fate to be referred to as "Gertrude's brother," ironic as for many years he was her mentor and counsellor. The A-B-C of Aesthetics considers the field of aesthetics not from a theoretical and discursive angle, not as a matter of classification and conceptual method, but from a basis of practical experience. The author insists that the importance of the aesthetic experience is something "as essentially practical as food."Stein argues in this book that an understanding of the meaning and implication of the aesthetic experience can only come through doing, not through argument and intellectualization. Aesthetic perception is a special way of grasping the realities in us and about us. It is not limited to the narrow outlook of specialists, artists, or their critics.
Postanarchism and Critical Art Practices
Engaging with contemporary debates about the political role of art in an era of total market subsumption, this book shows how artists respond to the challenges of political authoritarianism, police violence, right-wing populism, 'post-truth' discourse, economic inequality, pandemics, and the environmental crisis, transforming the public sphere in new and unexpected ways. Going beyond sterile debates about identity politics, diversity and representation that beset the mainstream media, university campuses and other cultural domains, the volume illustrates the ways in which artists are opening up alternative sites of contestation, occupation, and autonomous political thought and action. Newman and Topuzovski examine here the artistic practices of multiple collectives and individuals deeply engaged with social and political activities such as Grupo de Arte Callejero (GAC) and Voina, arguing that the best way to understand these new critical discourses and practices is through an updated political theory of anarchism - or what we call postanarchism - where the insurrection against power and the politics of singularity are central. Featuring, for instance, an examination of significant movements such as Black Lives Matter, as well as its use of artistic tactics such as graffiti, graphic design and movement art, the book launches itself into a vibrant discussion of the extent to which art can produce a multiplicity of practices through the deconstruction of existing legal, political, and cultural identities. By developing an alternative way of exploring the nexus between art and politics through the idea of postanarchism, this book bridges the gap between the two, promoting an understanding of the political role that art can play today and introduces a theory of postanarchism to a non-specialist audience of artists, activists and those generally interested in new sites and directions for radical politics.

Pen and Ink Illustration for Graphic and Advertising Design Production
This book is about reviving the practice of the traditional Pen and Ink illustration in advertising practice. It delves into History, how notable Draftsmen and Women were versatile in the practice of Hand Illustration. The advent and proliferation of the computer and recently the influx of Artificial Intelligence machines into the industry of Graphic Design has weakened the draftsmanship capability of modern artists, therefore this is a clarion call to return to basics because the computer has stolen the original dexterity that was inherent in artists and designers of the past.
Sketches from Behind Prison Walls
A tribute to the millions of Americans who are or have been imprisoned, Sketches from Behind Prison Walls is a compelling collection of art, poetry, and anecdotes that explore what it means to love, atone, and survive behind prison walls. Incarcerated artist Rein Kolts began sketching his fellow inmates in the early years of his sentence. The subjects offered their written thoughts to accompany the drawings, giving voice to their hope and resilience. Their forlorn faces number only a few dozen and account for an infinitesimal fraction of America's vast prison population. But the limited scale of the collection offers greater intimacy with each man's portrait and voice, conveying the quiet strength of incarcerated people with unusual granularity. Kolts supplements the portraits with a variety of politically and socially conscious drawings about life in prison and the criminal legal system. Part comedy, part cynicism, Kolts' pieces prod our complacent understanding of crime and punishment in America.Devon M. Kurtz, a criminal justice reform advocate and prison minister, offers an introduction and commentaries, providing a thoughtful framework for engaging with the collection.
Siren (Some Poetics)
Poetics as artistic practice and world-making: practitioners from Bernadette Mayer and Sky Hopinka to Liliane Lijn and Shanzhai Lyric explore the wilder, parapoetic shores of languageThrough work by artists and poets of various generations and geographies, as well as additional thinkers and artistic contributors, SIREN considers the ways in which language is increasingly employed by artists in works that trouble the line between language as a literary practice and language as a visual one. Both human and nonhuman forms of language-making and poetics are insisted upon, from precolonial myth to scientific speculation, fungal networks to gut bacteria, text to textile, poem to algorithm.Contributors include: Ruth Est矇vez, Hana Noorali and Lynton Talbot, Don Mee Choi, Ana簿s Duplan, Katja Aufleger, Patricia L. The Crucifixion in Painting
There have been several approaches to painting the Crucifixion during the past two Christian millennia. Byzantine Orthodoxy emphasized the divine glory of the Son of God, while Roman Catholicism focused more on the Savior's humanity and his redemptive sufferings. The stress on Christ's human nature and vulnerability has remained the most characteristic feature of Western Christian art, starting with the Renaissance. The image of the Crucifixion - the central event in Christian history - also remained widespread in the apparently secular and frequently atheistic modernist art scene.Twentieth--century Crucifixions exhibited great novelty, variety, and complexity. Contemporary painters used the body on the cross to explore a wide range of social and spiritual concerns, including their distinct iconoclastic causes. What is the common denominator behind the incredible diversity of the avant--garde depictions of the crucified Jesus? According to the author, it consists of the transformation that the perception of the Crucifixion underwent in the twentieth century - from a religious event with crucial dogmatic and theological implications to a primary cultural archetype that symbolizes righteous suffering. As such, it has become the ideal vehicle for rendering the existential and social realities of the century's history. The book is illustrated and contains 55 color photographs of paintings of the Crucifixion-from the Middle Ages to Post-Modernism.

Painting the Path of My Life
In this beautifully illustrated book, author Lisa MacDonald expresses her life story through art, which represents all her greatness and challenges she goes through on a daily basis. Lisa MacDonald embraces herself as an artist; she sees her art as a unique abstract piece with touches of imperfection. She sees her art as something that people are not used to seeing, and she believes it is something meant to be seen. Expressing herself through art is a great way to help her find the words to speak about her story. Her art always gives her the motivation to not give up on herself but use these challenges to build herself into a stronger and wiser woman. She made this book for people to get more in touch with her story and understand how her art can touch others' souls. She wants her story to spread awareness about different challenges that one may go through and imperfections that deserve to be spoken about.

In the Company of Art
Over the years as the director of the St. Louis Art Museum and later the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Perry T. Rathbone kept a journal. These are his unguarded and spontaneous expressions of the moment, not meant for publication--at least not in his lifetime. Alone in his study at the end of a day, Rathbone wrote in a large, unlined sketchbook, unloading whatever was fresh on his mind. Whether a meeting at the museum, a business trip, or a party he had just returned from, he wrote about whom he met, what he thought of them, the ambiance, the conversation, the art, the wine, and the food. Rathbone's journals provide a window onto an era of seismic cultural change seen through the eyes of an art czar and a tastemaker. There are meetings with artists such as William de Kooning, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Isamu Noguchi, and Alexander Calder, men of letters such as T.S. Eliot and Aldous Huxley. There are candid impressions of the collectors he courted, entertained, and forbore, such as Peggy Guggenheim and Joseph Pulitzer, and of the eccentric Boston Brahmin families with historic ties to the MFA--the Lowells, Lambs, Warrens, Coolidges, and Codmans. And of course he writes of the thrill of assisting Jaqueline Kennedy in the early 1960s with loans from the MFA to adorn the private quarters in the White House. In the Company of Art opens with journal entries from the later years of Rathbone's time at the St. Louis Art Museum in the early 1950s. But the greatest concentration of entries focuses on the early 1960s, during the banner years of Rathbone's directorship of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (the meteoric "Rathbone Era") when he began to enjoy the rewards of his achievements at the museum with new acquisitions, renovated galleries, rising attendance and membership. "Many of the museum's great acquisitions," the Boston Globe wrote, "can be credited to Perry Rathbone, the legendary director of the MFA." Urbane and charismatic, Rathbone won renown as the dean of museum directors in the United States, rightly celebrated for his ability to transform museums from quiet repositories of art into vibrant cultural centers. This is a unique record of what he thought and how he felt along the way.

Agatha Christie and Gothic Horror
Agatha Christie's work has been adapted extensively resulting in transformations that are both textual and cultural. While many adaptations are best known for being quaint murder mysteries, there are many adaptations of her work that draw on horror aesthetics. This book will look at how the growth of Agatha Christie adaptations have grown increasingly darker. Of key relevance to this study is the work of Sarah Phelps, whose Witness for the Prosecution, And Then There Were None, Ordeal by Innocence, The ABC Murders and The Pale Horse all are darker than their precedents. Born out of their contemporary screen contexts, they use entrenched literary and filmic codes of Gothic horror as central reference points for audiences. Drawing on adaptation scholarship, where adapters are interpreters as well as creators, this study will look at how Agatha Christie is closer to Gothic horror than what we realise. - Analysis of Agatha Christie adaptations and the horror genre. - First major monograph to explore Sarah Phelps work on Agatha Christie. - Explores the transcultural adaptations of Agatha Christie.

The Valley of Your Life
From the moment we are born, we learn an inexorable truth: one day we are going to die, and as we grow older, we get to experience the contraries that often afflict our existence. We have a tendency to fight what we consider negative, and many of us become blind to the fact that without darkness, there is no light. To many of us it takes some time to realize that we have a choice between resisting and losing the battle to what is an unavoidable part of our existence and accepting the darkest moments in life and gaining perspective and wisdom that will lead to enlightenment. Inspired by works of visual art, The Valley of Your Life explores ways in which darkness co-exists with light and enriches the human experience. It embarks us on a journey from the desert to the valley of our lives through the vessel of the poetic word.
The Experience of Mould Making
My name is David, and my trade is 'Mould Maker'. Over the years, I have developed the art of making moulds for ceramics, candles, boats and other objects. I worked in several boatyards, one in Great Britain on the River Thames. My father was a ceramic technician and he had a factory where I earned a living making ceramic moulds from plaster of paris, some as large as an old television set. He rented me a workshop for two years. It is certainly possible to earn a living making moulds and this book will help you understand what is involved.
