Anna Torma's large embroideries are complex expressions of her experiences of family, immigration, joy, and the act of creation. Her richly layered textile narratives draw references from popular culture, thrift shop aesthetics, and traditional Hungarian textiles and demonstrate her deep concern for the world we live in. Permanent Danger takes its title from Torma's large-scale 2017 work, making reference to human strife and vulnerability, threatened natural environments, and the highs and lows of daily life. Fifteen large-scale works produced by Torma between 2011 and 2021 are featured, along with essays by curators Sarah Quinton, Anne Koval, and Emily Falvey. The result is a stunning volume that allows readers to appreciate the intricacies and complexities of Torma's magnificent works. Born in Hungary, Anna Torma immigrated to Canada in 1988 and lives in New Brunswick. A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, she was awarded the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts -- Saidye Bronfman Award in 2020. Her work has been exhibited extensively in Canada and abroad, including at the prestigious 16th International Triennial of Tapestry in Ł籀dź, Poland, in 2019, and CONTEXTILE 24, the contemporary textile art biennial in Guimar瓊es, Portugal, in 2024. The Market Photo Workshop in South Africa and the 'Born Free' Generation
This study presents the history of the Market Photo Workshop (MPW) in Johannesburg and works produced by its new generation of photography students. Founded in 1989 by internationally renowned documentary photographer David Goldblatt, the MPW has reflected upon South African political struggles and sociocultural changes since its creation. Its foundation parallels a moment in time when photography was considered a 'truth telling' genre and an essential source of documents deployed against the apartheid regime. This book reflects on the evolution of the MPW in the post-apartheid era and explores how its new generation of students engages the photographic tradition of this institution and the revolutionary times that accompanied its creation to question their present moment. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual studies, photography, African studies, cultural studies and post-colonial studies.

Jane Simon brings together two critical practices into a new conversation, arguing that artists who harness domestic photography can advance a more expansive understanding of the autobiographical.Exploring the idea that self-representation need not equate to self-portraiture or involve the human form, artists from around the globe are examined, including Rinko Kawauchi, Catherine Opie, Dayanita Singh, Moyra Davey, and Elina Brotherus, who maintain a personal gaze at domestic detail. Painting Her Pleasure
An inspiring account of three women artists who pioneered new forms of the nude. Even in the bohemian world of avant-garde Paris, certain rules had to be obeyed. One of these rules was that women artists did not paint nudes. Yet three women would challenge this prohibition, offering their own distinct takes on the classic genre. Suzanne Valadon, ?milie Charmy and Marie Vassilieff painted in different styles, but they were united in their fascination for the nude. Their artistic explorations saw them experimenting with a range of cutting-edge subjects, including the male nude, the Black female nude, the pregnant nude and the nude self-portrait, a genre that few artists would tackle until half a century later. Painting her pleasure situates the work of Valadon, Charmy and Vassilieff within and against modernism, drawing parallels with later feminist artists and philosophers. Unravelling the complexities of early twentieth-century gender regimes and persistent cultural stereotypes, it provides an illuminating history of women, sexuality and the body.
What Black Is This You Say?
An illustrated anthology of texts on artist Amanda Williams, edited in collaboration with Camille Bacon. What Black Is This You Say?, by Amanda Williams, convenes a broad set of contributors to respond to her own eponymous public artwork at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York City (2021-2023). In this collection, the 17 colors and captions that appeared on the facade of Storefront--the project began as a series of Instagram posts of different hues of black, paired with witty and incisive comments on the multiplicity of Black culture--are expounded upon in poems, essays, and prose. With this anthology, Williams deliberately departs from traditional art criticism by gathering an intimate ensemble of her peers, friends, and collaborators, including Roxane Gay, Corinne Bailey Rae, and J Wortham, to comment on her work. What Black Is This You Say? is the first title in a new series titled Groundworks, produced in conjunction with Storefront for Art and Architecture. Storefront, founded in 1982, is known for its commitment to challenging and reframing the relationship between public and private space. In 1993, the gallery commissioned a project by the artist Vito Acconci and architect Steven Holl that replaced the exterior fa癟ade with a series of 12 movable panels that open the entire length of the gallery to the street, enabling endless possibilities of entry, navigation, and absorption into the gallery space.
Hiroshige’s Japan
