Reflecting Oil
Reflecting Oil presents innovative reflections on crude oil, one of the most important fossil fuels characterising modern life: On the one hand, oil functions as a fuel for unrestricted mobility and on the other, as a basis for shaping the material world, thus laying the foundation for a ubiquitous petroculture. Yet despite these profound repercussions on our existence, crude oil is a substance we rarely encounter directly with our senses. This lack of contact is logical in view of its specific properties (unusual odor, toxicity, etc.), but the question arises as to why this connection is not explicitly sought after in the sciences. Reflecting Oil is the result of different artistic research processes which entailed practical handling and holistic observation of the raw substance in the context of petroculture. This mode of research focusing on sensory perception--such as the differentiation of colors and smells, etc., and aesthetic and symbolic interpretation--provided findings on the levels of multi-sensory and practical knowledge. Drawing on a collaboration between art and science, such interdisciplinary investigations into crude oil as the basis of our petromodernity can be vital for the necessary shift towards sustainable energy cultures. "Liebe Mutti!"
Israeli artist Inbar Chotzen learnt only late in life that some of her ancestors were victims of Nazi persecution. She heard about the history of her Berlin relatives through their estate, which is preserved in the House of the Wannsee Conference. In addition to eight photo albums recording the lives of the parents and four sons between 1920 and 1942, there are 369 postcards sent by deported family members from Theresienstadt camp to their mother in Berlin. Inbar Chotzen approaches these lost lives by painting scenes from their everyday existence on the digitised cards - a silent dialogue with the past. This book presents the artworks and evidence of the persecution on which they are based, together with detailed historical background. Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California
A celebration of the joyful power of African American quilts, featuring images of over 100 quilts, new research and essaysPublished with Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA). The first publication dedicated to historical African American quilts in California, Routed West traces the flow and flourishing of quilts in the context of the Second Great Migration from 1940 to 1970. As millions of African Americans sought greater economic opportunities and freedom outside of the American South, hundreds of thousands initially arrived in the Golden State. Many migrants carried quilts as functional objects and physical reminders of the homes they left behind. ?douard Vuillard, the Nabis, and the Politics of Domesticity
This ground-breaking book is the first to address the feminine and feminist politics of Intimiste art - a modernist mode of art making developed in the 1890s by ?douard Vuillard while associated with the Nabi 'brotherhood'. Coined by contemporary critics, 'intimisme' encapsulated the shared approach of these artists to depicting intimate settings and themes. Vuillard's paintings, which are typically small, employ bold pigments and economic brushstrokes to depict female figures in tightly composed apartment interiors. Those portrayed include his mother and sister, just as wives and lovers dominate the art of other Nabis, including Maurice Denis and Pierre Bonnard. Francesca Berry comparatively analyses the gender politics of Nabi art to reveal real differences. Through skilled visual interpretation she argues that Vuillard attempted a profound engagement with the material conditions of feminine domesticity in cooperation with his first and most sustained audience: women. He did so, the author reveals, in artworks that explore a complex range of feminine experiences such as sexual initiation, stillbirth, illicit work, and unceasing housework. The personal gender politics of Intimiste practice also are foregrounded. Vuillard's studio-bedroom afforded him access to quotidian femininity. But at what risks to his sister's privacy and to his mother's subjectivity? Making an artistic project of feminine domesticity also meant entering the field of politics. The 1890s was the decade of state legislation and feminist demands with respect to work in the home and women's familial rights. Personal in motif and Symbolist in form, Berry's extensive historical research reveals these artworks also to have been social and political, sometimes even feminist, in meaning. Transcending the structural repression of domesticity in histories of modernist art, this book powerfully overturns residual myths of aesthetic introspection and social retreat that for too long have been attached to Nabi Symbolism.

The Art and Life of Francesca Alexander
This is the first book to examine the art and life of Boston-born artist Francesca Alexander (1837-1917). Francesca and her parents moved to Florence in 1853 and became part of a thriving international community. She was a largely self-taught artist, and both her art and writing focused on Italians and Italian life. Her portraits and nature studies, and her translations of songs and stories, were much admired by her contemporaries, including John Ruskin, who published three of her manuscripts and promoted her work to his followers. She used her earnings from the sale of these publications, and her art, to fund her many charitable endeavours; both friends and admirers marvelled at her saintly character, which they linked to a romantic view of Italy itself. Nonetheless, in spite of her celebrity on both sides of the Atlantic, she and her work have been largely forgotten.Drawing on her work, as well as other sources including letters, diaries, guidebooks, newspapers and magazines, this book provides a vivid biography of Francesca Alexander, her art, and her place in history.
Charles Gagnon
A personal and intimate perspective on one of Canada's most prominent 20th century multidisciplinary artists, who was once described as "abstraction's poet-philosopher." Charles Gagnon (1934-2003) was a painter, photographer and filmmaker considered by many to be an important figure in Quebec and Canadian art in the 20th century. His early career emerged alongside the American Abstract Expressionists and his growing multidisciplinary practice broke away from the singularity of painting shared by his Montreal contemporaries of the Automatistes and the Plasticiens. The complexity and depth of his work as a painter, photographer, and filmmaker was distinguished by a probing, introspective quality. His paintings were simultaneously rigid and free-flowing, with self-imposed rules and structure contrasted by rich fracture and gestural brush work. Across all disciplines he played with multiple levels of perception, and many works evoke the liminal space of the threshold, or multi-plane spaces. In Charles Gagnon: The Colour of Time, the Sound of Space, this long-standing multidisciplinary work is brought into full view with texts that explore Gagnon's various practices, from painting to photography to film. An English-language essay by art historian and curator Roald Nasgaard chronicles Gagnon's artistic evolution from his early years in New York in the 1950s to his final productive years in the late 1990s in Quebec, and situates him within an expanded international historical context of artists, artworks, and art movements. Filmmaker and professor Olivier Asselin's French-language essay engages Gagnon's use of different media, including the role of sound and music in his artworks. Culinary Palettes
How the visual culture of food, cookery, and consumption played a central role in the making of postrevolutionary Mexico. Postrevolutionary Mexico City was a site of anxious nation-building, as rampant modernization converged and clashed with the nation's growing nostalgia for its pre-Columbian heritage. During this volatile period, food became a meaningful symbol for a Mexican citizenry seeking new modes of national participation. Culinary Palettes explores how the artistic invocation of food cultures became an arena in which to negotiate the political entanglements of postrevolutionary Mexico. Lesley Wolff casts a nuanced eye on the work of visual artists such as Tina Modotti, Carlos Gonz獺lez, and Rufino Tamayo, who nurtured the symbolic and performative power of iconic foods such as pulque, mole poblano, and watermelon. Through analysis of a wide array of visual evidence, including paintings, architecture, vintage postcards, menus, and cookbooks, Culinary Palettes demonstrates how these artists positioned their work within a broad visual landscape that relied upon the power of Mexican foodways in the urban and national imagination. In the studios of modernists, Wolff argues, artistic production, foodways, and Indigeneity proved to be mutually constitutive--and at times weaponized--agents in articulating competing claims to a new nationhood.
Monet and the Impressionist Cityscape
A beautiful look at Claude Monet's cityscape paintings of Paris. In 1867, Monet (1840-1925) turned his back on tradition when he focused on the bustling life of Paris from the balcony of the Louvre. He was fascinated by the present in the growing French capital rather than focusing on the old masters. In a series of three paintings, he created a new pictorial topic. Monet's cityscapes of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, the Jardin de l'Infante, and the Quai du Louvre are considered to be the earliest Impressionist city views. In them, he casts a completely new artistic eye over the modern metropolis being rebuilt by Haussmann. By doing so, he also inspired artists like Caillebotte and Pissarro to create their own cityscapes. Monet and the Impressionist Cityscape reveals a new subject born, in all its beauty, through the example of Monet's three principal works, as well as others by famous Impressionist and Postimpressionist artists.
Tokyo Before Tokyo
A rich and original history of Edo, the shogun's city that became modern Tokyo.
