Avant-Garde

Ingram 出版
2025/04/06 出版

This stunning exhibition catalog celebrates Max Liebermann, the pioneering figure of German Impressionism, whose own painting and artistic leadership transformed the nation's cultural landscape. As a groundbreaking painter and head of the Berlin Secession, Max Liebermann championed modernism and introduced French Impressionism to the German Empire. His influence reached far beyond Berlin, sparking a diverse movement that flourished in cities such as Dresden, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, and Munich. Focusing on Liebermann's life and legacy, the catalog also examines his achievements as a collector and advocate for the avant-garde. It showcases his celebrated masterpieces alongside works by prominent peers such as Max Slevogt and Lovis Corinth, as well as contributions from more underappreciated figures including Gotthardt Kuehl, Maria Slavona, Lesser Ury, and Fritz von Uhde. With numerous chapter introductions and five longer research essays, the book offers a wide-ranging perspective, including topics such as the artistic exchange between France and Germany; the role of Jewish patrons in fostering Germany's embrace of French art; and the challenges Liebermann faced during the rise of the Nazi regime. Lavishly illustrated and expertly curated, this catalog provides an essential study of Max Liebermann as the central figure of German Impressionism while situating his work within the broader artistic and historical contexts of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Painful Beauty

University o 出版
2025/04/04 出版

Winner of the 2024 Charles C. Eldredge Prize by the Smithsonian American Art MuseumShowcases the vibrant practices of Tlingit women's beadworkFor over 150 years, Tlingit women artists have beaded colorful, intricately beautiful designs on moccasins, dolls, octopus bags, tunics, and other garments. Painful Beauty suggests that at a time when Indigenous cultural practices were actively being repressed, beading supported cultural continuity, demonstrating Tlingit women's resilience, strength, and power. Beadwork served many uses, from the ceremonial to the economic, as women created beaded pieces for community use and to sell to tourists. Like other Tlingit art, beadwork reflects rich artistic visions with deep connections to the environment, clan histories, and Tlingit worldviews. Contemporary Tlingit artists Alison Bremner, Chloe French, Shgen Doo Tan George, Lily Hudson Hope, Tanis S'eiltin, and Larry McNeil foreground the significance of historical beading practices in their diverse, boundary-pushing artworks.Working with museum collection materials, photographs, archives, and interviews with artists and elders, Megan Smetzer reframes this often overlooked artform as a site of historical negotiations and contemporary inspirations. She shows how beading gave Tlingit women the freedom to innovate aesthetically, assert their clan crests and identities, support tribal sovereignty, and pass on cultural knowledge. Painful Beauty is the first dedicated study of Tlingit beadwork and contributes to the expanding literature addressing women's artistic expressions on the Northwest Coast.

Sumi-E

Ingram 出版
2025/04/03 出版

The pinnacle of Japanese sumi-e painting, from great masters such as Sesshū and Tohaku to fantastical painters such as Shoūhaku and Jakuchū. Sumi-e ink painting is a uniquely Eastern form of painting that originated and developed in China in the 9th century. This book introduces the history of sumi-e painting over a period of approximately 500 years, beginning with the Kamakura and Namboku-cho periods when the form was first being adopted in Japan, and then the Muromachi period when Sesshū and Shūbun were active, and finally the Momoyama and Edo periods when Japanese influences led to the creation of unique works. This book introduces five centuries of ink wash painting through these works, exploring the distinctive qualities of Japanese ink wash painting and considering the role it has played in the history of art in Japan and its significance in the history of Japanese culture.―From the Introduction【Featured Sumi-e Artist/Keyword List】Sesshū Tōyō / Sesson Shūkei / Hasegawa Tōhaku / Kaihō Yūshō / Kanō Motonobu / Kanō Eitoku / Unkoku Tōgan / Hon'ami Kōetsu / Miyamoto Musashi / Kanō Sansetsu / Kanō Tanʼyū / Kusumi Morikage / Tawaraya Sōtatsu / Ogata Kōrin / Hakuin Ekaku / Sengai Gibon / Fūgai Ekun / Ōtsu-e / Soga Shōhaku / Itō Jakuchū / Maruyama Ōkyo / Ike no Taiga / Yosa Buson / Katsu Jagyoku / Gessen / Uragami Gyokudō / Mori Sosen / Mori Tetsuzan / Goshun (Matsumura Gekkei) / Nagasawa Rosetsu / Sakai Hōitsu / Tani Bunchō / Tanomura Chikuden / Yamoto Baiitsu / Sugai Baikan / Watanabe Kazan / Kawanabe Kyōsai / Tomioka Tessai / Yokoyama TaikanColumsWater and Ink: Infinite GradationsThe Zen Kōan and the World of Zen PaintingInk Wash Paintings by a WarriorInk Wash Paintings by Zen PriestsSoga Shōhaku's Ink Wash PaintingsInk Wash Painting Techniques

Reflecting Oil

Ernst,Logar  著
Dg Arts 出版
2025/03/30 出版

Reflecting Oil presents innovative reflections on crude oil, one of the most important fossil fuels characterising modern life: On the one hand, oil functions as a fuel for unrestricted mobility and on the other, as a basis for shaping the material world, thus laying the foundation for a ubiquitous petroculture. Yet despite these profound repercussions on our existence, crude oil is a substance we rarely encounter directly with our senses. This lack of contact is logical in view of its specific properties (unusual odor, toxicity, etc.), but the question arises as to why this connection is not explicitly sought after in the sciences. Reflecting Oil is the result of different artistic research processes which entailed practical handling and holistic observation of the raw substance in the context of petroculture. This mode of research focusing on sensory perception--such as the differentiation of colors and smells, etc., and aesthetic and symbolic interpretation--provided findings on the levels of multi-sensory and practical knowledge. Drawing on a collaboration between art and science, such interdisciplinary investigations into crude oil as the basis of our petromodernity can be vital for the necessary shift towards sustainable energy cultures. A more comprehensive understanding and awareness of how oil and fossil fuels shape our lives can stimulate the necessary cultural, social, and technological transformations towards a sustainable future. Artistic crude oil experiments Crude oil-based artworks Interdisciplinary and holistic reflection on the substance crude oil in the context of petroculture

"Liebe Mutti!"

Ruth,Preusse  著
2025/03/30 出版

Israeli artist Inbar Chotzen learnt only late in life that some of her ancestors were victims of Nazi persecution. She heard about the history of her Berlin relatives through their estate, which is preserved in the House of the Wannsee Conference. In addition to eight photo albums recording the lives of the parents and four sons between 1920 and 1942, there are 369 postcards sent by deported family members from Theresienstadt camp to their mother in Berlin. Inbar Chotzen approaches these lost lives by painting scenes from their everyday existence on the digitised cards - a silent dialogue with the past. This book presents the artworks and evidence of the persecution on which they are based, together with detailed historical background. One of the most extensive collections of postcards from Theresienstadt - a unique testimony to the Chotzen family The story of the Holocaust told through the moving fate of a Jewish family who stood shoulder to shoulder until the end Exhibition: Liebermann-Villa am Wannsee, Berlin, September 20, 2025 to January 19, 2026

Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California

Elaine,Yau  著
Delmonico Books 出版
2025/03/29 出版

A celebration of the joyful power of African American quilts, featuring images of over 100 quilts, new research and essaysPublished with Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA). The first publication dedicated to historical African American quilts in California, Routed West traces the flow and flourishing of quilts in the context of the Second Great Migration from 1940 to 1970. As millions of African Americans sought greater economic opportunities and freedom outside of the American South, hundreds of thousands initially arrived in the Golden State. Many migrants carried quilts as functional objects and physical reminders of the homes they left behind. They also brought their quiltmaking skills, extending the art form's Southern roots to the western United States in the later part of the 20th century.Featuring vibrant images of over 100 quilts by nearly 90 individuals--the majority of whom are women and have ties to the San Francisco Bay Area--and new research, Routed West honors the resilience, self-determination, collective care and creative ingenuity of this distinctive migrant generation. Essays by scholars, curators, quilt historians and artists celebrate the joyful power of African American quilts as objects of beauty, memory and cultural reclamation within Black life, and explore the role of museums in their stewardship and preservation. This book accompanies a group exhibition of artworks drawn from the African American quilt collection at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.

Camille Claudel and Bernhard Hoetger

2025/03/29 出版

Discover the harmony between the experimental sculptures of Camille Claudel and Bernhard Hoetger. Sculptures by two impressive artists, both inspired by Rodin, emerge from the shadow cast by their great role model. This book reveals how the works of Camille Claudel (1864-1943) and Bernhard Hoetger (1874-1949) paved the way for sculpture to enter the modern age. The artistic freedom of the avant-garde, including the emerging Art Nouveau, can be seen in their forms and ideals. Following their joint exhibition in 1905 in the Galerie Eug癡ne Blot in Paris, this volume unites the works of the two artists again. The lavishly illustrated publication presents the encounter between the two sculptors in the French art scene at the dawn of the modern age. Their experimentation with new materials and techniques enabled them to break out of the established patterns of artistic creativity.

Indigenous Tattoo Traditions

Lars,Krutak  著
Princeton 出版
2025/03/25 出版

A beautifully illustrated history of Indigenous tattooing practices around the world Tattooing within Indigenous communities is a time-honored practice that binds the tattoo recipient to a deeply felt collective history. More than mere decoration, tattoos embody cultural values, ancestral ties, and spiritual beliefs. Indigenous Tattoo Traditions captures ancient tribal tattooing practices and their contemporary resurgence, highlighting a beautiful aspect of humanity's shared cultural heritage. Transporting readers through history, Lars Krutak explores the art and customs of tattooing across numerous ancestral lands, including Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, the Arctic, Oceania, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Siberia. He illustrates how tattoos function as a form of writing that defines and structures community life, performing as rites of passage, symbols of rank, and signs of marital or religious devotion, among other facets of culture. We are introduced to the heavily tattooed Li women of China's Hainan Island with their elaborate facial and body tattoos, the bold indelible markings of Papua New Guinea's Indigenous peoples, and innovative cultural tattoo practitioners who are rebuilding a skin-marking legacy for future generations to come. With numerous images published for the first time and an illuminating foreword by cultural historian Sean Mallon, Indigenous Tattoo Traditions opens a window onto one of the world's most vibrant yet misunderstood mediums of human expression.

Rembrandt. the Complete Paintings

TASCHEN 出版
2025/03/24 出版

The Dutch Golden Age of painting spawned some of history's greatest artists and artisans, but few can boast the genius and legacy of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669). Despite never leaving his native Netherlands, Rembrandt projected his oeuvre past the boundaries of his own experience, producing some of art's most diverse and impactful works across portraiture, biblical, allegorical, landscape, and genre scenes. In all their forms, Rembrandt's paintings are built of intricacies--the totality of each subtle facial wrinkle, gaze, or figure amounting to an emotional force that stands unmatched among his contemporaries and artistic progeny alike. Each work is imbued with feeling. Biblical scenes, like Bathsheba at her Bath, become vehicles for meditations on human longing, probing depths beyond that which is canonized in scripture or depicted in other representations. His portraits, be them of wealthy patrons or tradesmen, communicate the essence of an individual through fine demarcations, their faces bathed in an ethereal light against darkened earthtones. Perhaps most striking, his series of self-portraits is a triumph of the medium; beginning in his youth and spanning until a year prior to his death, Rembrandt's self portraiture is an intimate glimpse into his lifelong process of self-reflection.This XL monograph compiles all 330 of Rembrandt's paintings in stunning reproductions. From Belshazzar's Feast to The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, we discover Rembrandt's painted oeuvre like never before.

?douard Vuillard, the Nabis, and the Politics of Domesticity

2025/03/23 出版

This ground-breaking book is the first to address the feminine and feminist politics of Intimiste art - a modernist mode of art making developed in the 1890s by ?douard Vuillard while associated with the Nabi 'brotherhood'. Coined by contemporary critics, 'intimisme' encapsulated the shared approach of these artists to depicting intimate settings and themes. Vuillard's paintings, which are typically small, employ bold pigments and economic brushstrokes to depict female figures in tightly composed apartment interiors. Those portrayed include his mother and sister, just as wives and lovers dominate the art of other Nabis, including Maurice Denis and Pierre Bonnard. Francesca Berry comparatively analyses the gender politics of Nabi art to reveal real differences. Through skilled visual interpretation she argues that Vuillard attempted a profound engagement with the material conditions of feminine domesticity in cooperation with his first and most sustained audience: women. He did so, the author reveals, in artworks that explore a complex range of feminine experiences such as sexual initiation, stillbirth, illicit work, and unceasing housework. The personal gender politics of Intimiste practice also are foregrounded. Vuillard's studio-bedroom afforded him access to quotidian femininity. But at what risks to his sister's privacy and to his mother's subjectivity? Making an artistic project of feminine domesticity also meant entering the field of politics. The 1890s was the decade of state legislation and feminist demands with respect to work in the home and women's familial rights. Personal in motif and Symbolist in form, Berry's extensive historical research reveals these artworks also to have been social and political, sometimes even feminist, in meaning. Transcending the structural repression of domesticity in histories of modernist art, this book powerfully overturns residual myths of aesthetic introspection and social retreat that for too long have been attached to Nabi Symbolism.

Postwar Revisited

2025/03/22 出版

Okwui Enwezor's 2016 exhibition Postwar: Art between the Pacific and the Atlantic, 1945-1965 redefined the history of art produced in those two decades. Nearly a decade later, Postwar Revisited returns to these debates to present an image of a historical period in which Western conceptions of art, aesthetics, and philosophy are all thrown into intense flux after Auschwitz and Hiroshima, while the cultural energies of decolonization generate myriad artistic and intellectual practices across the globe, which re-engage the connections of art to life itself. Focusing on modernist artists, artist collectives, and architects central to dissonant regional traditions, as well as influential exhibitions and patronage systems, the contributors produce a new understanding of emergent postwar global art. Provoking new ways of thinking, engaging, and narrating art history, Postwar Revisited is essential reading for those interested in debates on global art history and global modernism, the intersections between art and decolonization, the cultural aspects of the Cold War and the Non-Aligned Movement, and modern and contemporary art more generally. Turner

Yc British Art 出版
2025/03/18 出版

An engaging account of Britain's greatest painter, told through works from the Yale Center for British Art's extensive collection Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) is one of the most recognizable names in the history of British art. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1802, Turner broke new ground with his oils, watercolors, and prints. His landscapes and marine paintings are widely considered the crowning achievement of British Romantic art. This book, the inaugural installment in the Yale Center for British Art's Collection Series, explores the museum's astonishing Turner holdings--the largest outside the United Kingdom--in a manner that will engage the general reader and expert alike. Six sections of plates provide a comprehensive overview of the artist's career, place the works within their historical and cultural context, and include new discoveries regarding the identification of locations, landscapes, and dates. Gillian Forrester's supplementary essay offers a novel account of Turner's innovative printmaking practice, illuminating his fraught collaborations with other printmakers. Complementing an exhibition at the YCBA and a satellite exhibition at the Dordrechts Museum (The Netherlands), both planned for the 250th year of Turner's birth, this publication celebrates the artist's unparalleled vision as exemplified in the YCBA's world-class collection of his work.Published by the Yale Center for British Art/Distributed by Yale University Press Exhibition Schedule: Yale Center for British Art(March 29, 2025-July 27, 2025) Dordrechts Museum(Spring 2026)

The Art and Life of Francesca Alexander

This is the first book to examine the art and life of Boston-born artist Francesca Alexander (1837-1917). Francesca and her parents moved to Florence in 1853 and became part of a thriving international community. She was a largely self-taught artist, and both her art and writing focused on Italians and Italian life. Her portraits and nature studies, and her translations of songs and stories, were much admired by her contemporaries, including John Ruskin, who published three of her manuscripts and promoted her work to his followers. She used her earnings from the sale of these publications, and her art, to fund her many charitable endeavours; both friends and admirers marvelled at her saintly character, which they linked to a romantic view of Italy itself. Nonetheless, in spite of her celebrity on both sides of the Atlantic, she and her work have been largely forgotten.Drawing on her work, as well as other sources including letters, diaries, guidebooks, newspapers and magazines, this book provides a vivid biography of Francesca Alexander, her art, and her place in history.

Charles Gagnon

Ingram 出版
2025/03/14 出版

A personal and intimate perspective on one of Canada's most prominent 20th century multidisciplinary artists, who was once described as "abstraction's poet-philosopher." Charles Gagnon (1934-2003) was a painter, photographer and filmmaker considered by many to be an important figure in Quebec and Canadian art in the 20th century. His early career emerged alongside the American Abstract Expressionists and his growing multidisciplinary practice broke away from the singularity of painting shared by his Montreal contemporaries of the Automatistes and the Plasticiens. The complexity and depth of his work as a painter, photographer, and filmmaker was distinguished by a probing, introspective quality. His paintings were simultaneously rigid and free-flowing, with self-imposed rules and structure contrasted by rich fracture and gestural brush work. Across all disciplines he played with multiple levels of perception, and many works evoke the liminal space of the threshold, or multi-plane spaces. In Charles Gagnon: The Colour of Time, the Sound of Space, this long-standing multidisciplinary work is brought into full view with texts that explore Gagnon's various practices, from painting to photography to film. An English-language essay by art historian and curator Roald Nasgaard chronicles Gagnon's artistic evolution from his early years in New York in the 1950s to his final productive years in the late 1990s in Quebec, and situates him within an expanded international historical context of artists, artworks, and art movements. Filmmaker and professor Olivier Asselin's French-language essay engages Gagnon's use of different media, including the role of sound and music in his artworks. Michiko Yajima Gagnon, the wife of the late artist, gives insight into the inseparability of everyday life and Charles's creative undertakings: his friendships with other artists (Tōru Takemitsu, Lee Friedlander), travel (to New York, Japan, and, particularly, the American Southwest), and the relationship between the landscapes surrounding his studios and his artwork. Featuring more than 250 art reproductions and archival images, Charles Gagnon is an intimate portrait of an artist and the celebration of a life's work.

Murals of New York City

Ingram 出版
2025/03/13 出版

If all of the murals of New York City were under one roof, it would be the greatest collection of populist art in America. MURALS OF NEW YORK CITY is the first book to curate over thirty of the most important, influential, and impressive murals found within all five boroughs. The murals featured in this volume act as both an artistic and cultural guide to New York and its citizens over the past 100+ years--from the Victorian sensibilities of the 1900's, to the New Deal outlook of the WPA-commissioned artworks, to the graffiti-inflected art of Keith Haring and Barry McGee. The book enlightens readers with the lively back stories of those who commissioned and created these murals, and documents the works through extensive original photography that shows both the murals in context, and with details that highlight the artistic hand of the muralists. From courthouses, to libraries, to schoolrooms, to classic hotel watering holes, MURALS OF NEW YORK CITY introduces readers to a wide range of cultural icons and artistic treasures. Full-color images of works by the world's most celebrated artists including Marc Chagall, Roy Lichtenstein, Maxfield Parrish, and more are accompanied by informative and historical commentary. Creativity and Inspiration is about Abella Ballen's creative process, including drawings and notes from her notebooks with linkages to images that resulted from those ideas. These are questionsthat are always posed to artists."As artists we are members of a particular group influenced by theenvironments we inhabit whether they be physical, social, cultural, psychological, or artistic, and this becomes the source of our artisticinterests and visual responses."The imaginative and intellectual work I do in the studio is a form ofresearch, an exploration of a particular subject to be developed in apersonal visual manner. Fighting for Freedom

2025/03/12 出版

As the companion to the exhibition, Fighting for Freedom places Black craftspeople at the forefront of American history, from before the Revolutionary War through the Civil War and beyond Reconstruction. Delving into diverse narratives of creativity, resilience, and triumph in the quest for freedom, this book underscores the evolution of freedom through the lens of material culture--by exploring how the very concept of freedom was shaped and redefined by enslaved and free craftspeople who relentlessly fought for their rights and the recognition of their humanity.Featuring ten essays by leading historians, museum curators, and material culture scholars and more than seventy color photographs of Black artistry, including paintings, metalwork, woodwork, pottery, and furniture, this book vividly illustrates how Black men and women persistently sought tangible expressions of liberty which have endured as symbols of their creators' legacies in the ongoing struggle for freedom.Contributors include Lauren Applebaum, Robell Awake, Lydia Blackmore, Aleia M. Brown, R. Ruthie Dibble, Philippe L. B. Halbert, Jennifer Van Horn, Alexandra Alevizatos Kirtley, and Susan J. Fire Island Modernist: Horace Gifford and the Architecture of Seduction

Ingram 出版
2025/03/10 出版

Featuring new houses, many additional photographs and a new afterword, Fire Island Modernist offers a fascinating look at the history and culture of this "gay paradise" through the life and work of Horace GiffordPublished with Gordon De Vries Studio. As the 1960s became the "Sixties," architect Horace Gifford executed a remarkable series of beach houses that transformed the terrain and culture of New York's Fire Island. Growing up on the beaches of Florida, Gifford forged a deep connection with coastal landscapes. Pairing this sensitivity with jazzy improvisations on modernist themes, he perfected a sustainable modernism in cedar and glass that was as attuned to natural landscapes as to our animal natures. Gifford's serene 1960s pavilions provided refuge from a hostile world, while his exuberant post-Stonewall, pre-AIDS masterpieces orchestrated bacchanals of liberation. Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift once spurned Hollywood limos for the rustic charm of Fire Island's boardwalks. Truman Capote wrote Breakfast at Tiffany's here. Diane von F羹rstenberg showed off her latest wrap dresses to an audience that included Halston, Giorgio Sant' Angelo, Calvin Klein and Geoffrey Beene. Today, such a roster evokes the aloof, gated compounds of the Hamptons or Malibu. But these celebrities lived in modestly scaled homes alongside middle-class vacationers, all with equal access to Fire Island's natural beauty.Blending cultural and architectural history, Fire Island Modernist ponders a fascinating era through an overlooked architect whose life, work and colorful milieu trace the operatic arc of a lost generation, and still resonate with artistic and historical import. First published in 2013 and long out of print, this iconic book returns in an expanded edition, including five new featured houses, drawings of previously unseen homes, new photography, updated scholarship and a new afterword by Charles Renfro.

Culinary Palettes

University 出版
2025/03/08 出版

How the visual culture of food, cookery, and consumption played a central role in the making of postrevolutionary Mexico. Postrevolutionary Mexico City was a site of anxious nation-building, as rampant modernization converged and clashed with the nation's growing nostalgia for its pre-Columbian heritage. During this volatile period, food became a meaningful symbol for a Mexican citizenry seeking new modes of national participation. Culinary Palettes explores how the artistic invocation of food cultures became an arena in which to negotiate the political entanglements of postrevolutionary Mexico. Lesley Wolff casts a nuanced eye on the work of visual artists such as Tina Modotti, Carlos Gonz獺lez, and Rufino Tamayo, who nurtured the symbolic and performative power of iconic foods such as pulque, mole poblano, and watermelon. Through analysis of a wide array of visual evidence, including paintings, architecture, vintage postcards, menus, and cookbooks, Culinary Palettes demonstrates how these artists positioned their work within a broad visual landscape that relied upon the power of Mexican foodways in the urban and national imagination. In the studios of modernists, Wolff argues, artistic production, foodways, and Indigeneity proved to be mutually constitutive--and at times weaponized--agents in articulating competing claims to a new nationhood.

Monet and the Impressionist Cityscape

2025/03/08 出版

A beautiful look at Claude Monet's cityscape paintings of Paris. In 1867, Monet (1840-1925) turned his back on tradition when he focused on the bustling life of Paris from the balcony of the Louvre. He was fascinated by the present in the growing French capital rather than focusing on the old masters. In a series of three paintings, he created a new pictorial topic. Monet's cityscapes of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, the Jardin de l'Infante, and the Quai du Louvre are considered to be the earliest Impressionist city views. In them, he casts a completely new artistic eye over the modern metropolis being rebuilt by Haussmann. By doing so, he also inspired artists like Caillebotte and Pissarro to create their own cityscapes. Monet and the Impressionist Cityscape reveals a new subject born, in all its beauty, through the example of Monet's three principal works, as well as others by famous Impressionist and Postimpressionist artists.

Tokyo Before Tokyo

Reaktion B 出版
2025/03/08 出版

A rich and original history of Edo, the shogun's city that became modern Tokyo. Tokyo today is one of the world's mega-cities and the center of a scintillating, hyper-modern culture--but not everyone is aware of its past. Founded in 1590 as the seat of the warlord Tokugawa family, Tokyo, then called Edo, was the locus of Japanese trade, economics, and urban civilization until 1868, when it mutated into Tokyo and became Japan's modern capital. This beautifully illustrated book presents important sites and features from the rich history of Edo, taken from contemporary sources such as diaries, guidebooks, and woodblock prints. These include the huge bridge on which the city was centered; the vast castle of the Shogun; sumptuous Buddhist temples, bars, kabuki theaters, and Yoshiwara--the famous red-light district.

Painting as a Way of Life

Richard,Neer  著
University 出版
2025/03/08 出版

Neer uncovers a key moment in the history of early modern art, when painting was understood to be a tool for self-transformation and for living a philosophical life. In this wide-ranging study, Richard Neer shows how French painters of the seventeenth century developed radically new ways to connect art, perception, and ethics. Cutting across traditional boundaries of classicism and realism, Neer addresses four case studies: Nicolas Poussin, renowned for marrying ancient philosophy and narrative painting; Louise Moillon, who pioneered French still life in the 1630s; Georges de La Tour, a painter of intense and introspective nocturnes; and the Brothers Le Nain, specialists in genre and portraiture who inspired Courbet, Manet, and other painters of modern life. Setting these artists in dialogue with Montaigne, Descartes, Pascal, and others, ranging from the studios of Rome to the streets of Paris, this book provides fresh accounts of essential artworks--some well-known, others neglected--and new ways to approach the relation of art, theory, and daily life.
