Modern Japanese Printmakers

Ingram 出版
2025/03/06 出版

This visually captivating volume explores the vibrant world of post-World War II Japanese printmaking, a movement that blended meticulous craftsmanship with groundbreaking innovation to transform the medium. Written by a leading authority on 20th-century Japanese printmaking, it pulses with the same vitality and ingenuity as the works it celebrates. Showcasing over 100 stunning full-page reproductions, the book reveals the wide-ranging styles that defined this era of artistic reinvention. From the striking works of Saitō Kiyoshi that blend traditional technique with modern influences and the bold monochromatic works of Munakata Shikō to the refined calligraphic abstractions of Shinoda Tōkō and the colorful psychedelic works of Ay-O, the collection celebrates the vision of printmakers who challenged conventions and reinterpreted tradition. In addition to well-known masters, lesser-recognized artists are featured with thoughtful descriptions that shine a light on their contributions. In-depth profiles of select living creators, informed by exclusive conversations with the author, provide a personal look at their creative journeys and ongoing influence. Designed to complement the striking aesthetic of the prints themselves, this book is both a visual feast and an engaging exploration of Japanese printmaking's evolution during a period of profound artistic change.

After Spaceship Earth

Eva,Diaz  著
Ingram 出版
2025/03/05 出版

An expansive look at the contemporary artists confronting, challenging, and reimagining R. Buckminster Fuller's techno-utopianism to envision sustainable futures Architect and designer R. Buckminster Fuller's (1895-1983) concept of "Spaceship Earth," one of the most powerful metaphors of the twentieth century, imagines our planet as a monumental vehicle sustained by the interdependence of human technologies and natural ecologies. In this book, Eva D穩az explores that metaphor through the work of contemporary artists from around the world who grapple with Fuller's project to promote the equitable distribution of global assets through design, and with the technocratic euphoria of his era. Beginning with a focus on Fuller's iconic geodesic dome design and moving to the extraplanetary implications of his ideas, D穩az illuminates how artists including John Akomfrah, Mary Mattingly, Trevor Paglen, Jacolby Satterwhite, Hito Steyerl, and many others draw from Fuller's mode of experimental design research to create provocative alternatives to corporate control and surveillance. These artists probe the space "race" and colonization as powerful means to readdress histories of violence and racial inequity. D穩az critiques the ecological costs of technological innovation and the role that techno-utopianism has played in political, economic, gender, and racial domination. Highlighting Afrofuturism, ecofeminism, and new ideas of citizenship, After Spaceship Earth conveys the vital afterlives of Fuller's concept for today's world-builders, posing vital questions of its usefulness and limits.

The Twilight of Bohemia

Ingram 出版
2025/03/05 出版

An intimate history of America's first publicly funded artists' housing project and its residents that casts light on the precarious place of art-makers in a changing New York. Westbeth Artists Housing was founded in 1970 to provide affordable housing for artists and their families. It occupies a full city block in what back then was one of New York's less desirable neighborhoods, the desolate far-West Village. Over the next fifty years, the building complex served as a Great Society for bohemians, home at any one time to more than three hundred and eighty creators, who included the pioneering video artist Nam June Paik, jazz great Gil Evans, and the photographer Diane Arbus, who took her life in her apartment in 1971, barely a year after she'd moved in. To its tenants Westbeth offered the possibility of a middle-class life at affordable rents that freed them to walk along the cliff-edge of their art. Barton Lidic矇 Benes filled unlikely vessels (a water-gun, a squirting flower) with his HIV-positive blood in a series called "Lethal Weapons." The actor Black-Eyed Susan played two dozen roles--including the empress of China and the queen of Saturn-- in the legendary Ridiculous Theatrical Company. After her basement studio was flooded during Superstorm Sandy, Karen Santry dove into the noxious water in rented scuba gear to check the condition of her paintings. With the passing of time, Westbeth's artists watched their neighborhood gentrify and rebrand as the glitzy Meatpacking District, where the average apartment rents for more than $6000 a month. And while some of those artists achieved fame, obscurity drove others to bitterness and despair. The Twilight of Bohemia frames its story with that of the life and tragic death of Gay Milius, a gifted and flamboyantly eccentric painter, flea-market picker, and novelist who moved into the building in 1970 and took his life there in 2006. Sociologists describe Westbeth as a Naturally-Occurring Retirement Community, or NORC; today, a majority of its residents are over 60. But is Westbeth just an arty senior center holding out against the ruthless market forces of late-capitalist New York? Is artmaking a relic of a past way of life or a good that merits our society's continuing support? The Twilight of Bohemia explores the changing notions of what it means to be a successful artist and the heartbreaking difficulty of surviving as one at our present cultural moment. It's a book for anyone who loves brilliantly written stories of passion, idealism, ambition and community, for any reader interested in urban social history or the history of art, and for all who still believe in the old bohemian ethos: of living for art.

Cherry Blossoms in Bloom

Ingram 出版
2025/03/04 出版

Gorgeously displayed in an accordion-fold binding, this is a visual ode to the beauty of cherry blossoms--harbingers of spring--by legendary artists of Japanese woodblock printing. Cherry blossoms are beloved signs of spring renewal celebrated by garden clubs, botanic gardens, and popular festivals. This collection features over seventy works printed in a special format that allows for an unbroken, ever-scrolling display of these detailed, jewel-like artworks accompanied by an informative booklet in a handsome slipcase. The cherry tree, a traditional symbol of Japan, heralds spring with a spectacular display of subtle color variation spreading like a soft, fragrant cloud over the countryside giving rise to hanami, the ancient cherry blossom festival chronicled by great artists from Hokusai and Hiroshige to Keibun, Bairei, and Hasui. This book showcases classic woodblock prints that highlight the intense yet ephemeral beauty of this unique floral moment--an occasion where family and friends gather in celebration to reflect upon the transience of all things and the fragility of existence. The fleeting beauty of the cherry blossom provides the occasion to contemplate and find wisdom in nature's cycle of life, death, and rebirth. This collection is perfect for fans of Japanese art and culture as well as anyone who appreciates the beauty and lore of this beloved flowering tree--long treasured in Japan but now also synonymous with the US capital.

From the History of the Dornach Hill...

Ingram 出版
2025/03/03 出版

Focusing on Marie Steiner-von Sivers' distinctive collaboration with Rudolf Steiner, this book offers an engaging, lively narrative of the early decades of the anthroposophic movement. Utilizing eyewitness accounts and primary sources, Angela Locher creates vivid images of the arts being developed at the Goetheanum, in particular eurythmy, speech formation, and the dramatic arts. She also describes many fascinating aspects of general anthroposophic history, including the period of collaboration with the Theosophical Society; the design and construction of the first and second Goetheanum buildings; Steiner's overseas travel, tours, and visits; the pivotal Christmas Conference of 1923/24; stage performances, including Steiner's mystery dramas; and Rudolf Steiner's unexpected death and its immediate aftermath.Locher structures this absorbing study around the life of Marie Steiner--from her birth in 1867, childhood in Russia, and eventual passing in Switzerland in 1948."I have written this book especially for subsequent generations of eurythmists, actors, and speakers who could not experience what had been achieved in the previous century...the vital processes of the development of eurythmy and the dramatic arts. These created the foundation on which we stand today and from which we can carry on into the future." --Angela Locher

Staithes

Ingram 出版
2025/03/02 出版

The first book to survey the work of the late 19th century artists colony located on the coast in Northern Yorkshire, whose paintings of rural landscapes, seascapes, fishing scenes and village life was highly influenced by the Impressionists. The period 1870-1910 saw the heyday of a phenomenon of artist 'colonies' which, though centered on Europe, stretched to the USA and Australia. Despite most histories focusing on the urban and avant-garde, this was the dominant mode of international art practice - with its formative role in the emergence of modern tourism having ramifications still now. Although at its core was a yearning and nostalgia for life that was pre-modern and immersed in nature, the authenticity it sought placed artists' colonies firmly within a modern context. In doing so it set the scene for a qualitatively new encounter between artists and environment. This book on the Staithes colony in Yorkshire is the first to present its activity in the context of painting on that coast, explore its international connections and influences and give a far fuller picture of the inter-relationship of its main artists, including Britain's first female Royal Academician.

Caspar David Friedrich

Ingram 出版
2025/02/26 出版

A richly illustrated volume surveying the career of Caspar David Friedrich, the German landscape painter whose emotionally profound visions of nature are among the most iconic works of Romantic art The paintings and drawings of the nineteenth-century German landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) brilliantly illuminate our experience of the natural world. This generously illustrated volume explores how Friedrich, who created some of the most indelible images of Romantic art, deployed signature motifs--moonlit skies, Gothic ruins, isolated figures, and misty panoramas--together with innovative compositional strategies to create paintings and drawings that are metaphorically rich and emotionally profound. Friedrich worked at the dawn of a new understanding in Europe of the human relationship with the natural world, as German artists and intellectuals elevated the exploration of nature into a journey of self-discovery, yielding insights into spirituality, mortality, identity, and history. Essays by leading scholars examine Friedrich's career, considering how he created a new and open-ended pictorial language to express the Romantic vision of nature. Placing his works in cultural and historic context, the authors evaluate his status as an icon of German Romanticism and as a touchstone for visual culture in the United States, while also exploring his working methods and the complex themes that underpinned his art. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art/Distributed by Yale University Press Exhibition Schedule: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (February 8-May 11, 2025)

Steina

Natalie,Bell  著
Mit Press 出版
2025/02/25 出版

The first comprehensive monograph in over a decade celebrating the work of pioneering video artist Steina, who is known for pushing perspective beyond the human-centered realm. Accompanying the related exhibition at MIT List Visual Arts Center and Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Steina brings renewed recognition to Steina (b. 1940, Iceland), tracing her oeuvre from early collaborative works with her partner Woody Vasulka to her independent explorations of optics and a liberated, non-anthropocentric subjectivity. It follows her practice from downtown New York to Buffalo to the vast landscapes of New Mexico and Iceland, which appear in her immersive video environments of the 1990s and 2000s. Venturing into nature and combining imaging technologies with reflective orbs, Steina reorientated the human body's relationship to nature and expanded how we access the natural world through media. Scholars including Gloria Sutton, Joey Heinen, and Ina Blom consider how Steina's generative sense of play gave way to methods of processing and computation; contextualize Steina alongside a group of her peers who shared an obsession with the electronic signal; and argue for her interest in video as a proto-virtual space. Steina has never felt more relevant. Steina, born Steinunn Briem Bjarnadottir, studied violin and music theory in Reykjavik before attending the State Music Conservatory in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In 1965, she emigrated to New York City. By the late 1960s, she began to focus entirely on video work, and in 1971, cofounded The Electronic Kitchen (later The Kitchen), an experimental electronic media space. Her work has been shown at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and many other places. A copublication with the MIT List Visual Arts Center and Buffalo AKG Art Museum

The Beauty of Belief

Ingram 出版
2025/02/24 出版

The Beauty of Belief sheds new light on Lutheran relationships with ecclesiastical decoration in southwest Germany following the Duchy of W羹rttemberg's Reformation in 1534. Based on extensive original archival research and engagement with surviving images and objects, R籀is穩n Watson compellingly demonstrates how Lutherans moved away from initial acts of iconoclasm and towards embracing the possibilities of the religious image in their devotional routines. She explores the interactions of W羹rttemberg rulers, pastors, and congregations with their ecclesiastical spaces across the political upheavals of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In doing so, this book tells not only the story of the visual culture of the Reformation, but an account of W羹rttemberg's Reformation itself.

The Four Seasons

Rizzoli Electa 出版
2025/02/23 出版

This collection of woodblock prints celebrates the seasons and is designed as a Japanese-style accordion-fold book with open binding and slipcased with a booklet for the text. Embracing seasonal change is an important part of Japan's native belief system and an enduring theme of its creative expression. Japanese artists--including Hokusai, Hiroshige, Harunobu, and many others--have long celebrated the endless cycle and rhythm of nature and the fleeting transience and beauty of the seasons, depicting common customs from picnics welcoming spring under blossoming cherry trees to ritual offerings made to the autumnal harvest moon. The seasonal iconography includes recurring plant and wildlife elements: plum blossoms, irises, morning glories, cranes, geese flying in migratory formation. Some pictorial compositions focus upon a single time of year, but many encompass all four seasons together. This beautiful and elegant collection makes the ideal gift for anyone interested in the art and culture of Japan. The classic woodblocks in this collection express essential truths about the natural world and the evanescence of human experience in a visual idiom that, while distinctively Japanese, has great universal appeal.

Senga Nengudi

2025/02/22 出版

A celebration of five decades of multimedia artist Senga Nengudi's creative practice. Radically expanding our understanding of Senga Nengudi's art, this book publishes never before seen drawings, prints, photographs, performance scores, and poetry, spanning five decades of her practice. When Senga Nengudi's sculptural installation RSVP debuted at Just Above Midtown in 1977, the works quickly became icons of the Black Arts movement. During her five-decade-long career, Nengudi has realized a remarkable body of work that blurs the boundaries between sculpture and performance, fine art and ritual, individual authorship and collective energy. Made of everyday materials, Nengudi's installations are at once proxies for bodies and sites for performance. Characteristic of her openness to multiplicity, the artist, born Sue Ellen Irons, has assumed pseudonyms that inflect her creative identities as sculptor (Senga Nengudi), painter (Harriet Chin), photographer (Propecia Leigh), and writer (Lily Bea Moor). This publication is devoted to all of her creative identities.

Modern Iran and the Avant-Gardes

2025/02/22 出版

When tradition meets global modernism: masterworks from Iran. Modern Iran and the Avant-Gardes, 1948-78 explores how the complex cultural tensions of the nation's period between 1948 and 1978 led to artistic innovation. As Iran became modern, modernism became distinctly Iranian. Iranian artists created a unique form of modernism that addressed the tension between commitments to innovate and an engagement with traditional Iranian ideas and cultural forms. Heavily illustrated, this publication features thirty artists who worked during the pivotal modernism period and practiced in a range of media from painting and sculpture to printmaking, drawing, and architecture. Featuring an introductory essay by exhibition curator Pantea Haghighi that surveys the range of artistic and political influences on the emergence of Iranian modernisms and a selection of focused essays by scholars and curators Fereshteh Daftari, Davood Madadpoor, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Ali Bakhtiari, Modern Iran and the Avant-Gardes, 1948-78 is a timely addition to the scholarship on both alternate modernisms and the history of Iranian art. Featured artists include: Hossein Amanat, Massoud Arabshahi, Siah Armajani, Iran Darroudi, Kamran Diba, Seyed Mohammad Ehsaey, Parvaneh Etemadi, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Abdol-Aziz Farmanfarmaian, Mansour Ghandriz, Marcos Grigorian, Nahid Hagigat, Farideh Lashai, Reza Mafi, Leyly Matine-Daftary, Sirak Melkonian, Ardeshir Mohasses, Bahman Mohasses, Nicky Nodjoumi, Ruyin Pakbaz, Faramarz Pilaram, Behjat Sadr, Abolghassem Saidi, Sohrab Sepehri, Masoumeh Seyhoun, Houshang Seyhoun, Jazeh Tabatabai, Parviz Tanavoli, Mohsen Vaziri-Moghaddam, Hossein Zenderoudi, and Jalil Ziapour.

The Frescoed Fa癟ade in Renaissance Roman Visual Culture

2025/02/21 出版

This book examines Roman fa癟ades decorated with fresco and sgraffito between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that once enveloped the central rioni of Rome within a web of symbolic social, political, and familial allegiances that transformed a street-side stroll into a visually engaging experience. Today, many of these faces are lost, and our understanding of what they comprised is frighteningly incomplete. This book offers a refreshed look at this often-forgotten facet of Renaissance visual culture to reignite interest in the tradition before its last remnants disappear. In addition to offering a new compilation of these documented fa癟ades, this book also places new emphasis on the making and meaning of these "painted faces" to provide new insights into the place of the decorated fa癟ade at the intersections of patron identity and painterly innovation in a city working tirelessly to reinvent itself.

Pan-Judah!

Ingram 出版
2025/02/21 出版

Beginning in the 1920s, a man named Julius Streicher published a small weekly German newspaper called Der St羹rmer. Its mission was straightforward: to warn the German people about the threats posed by foreign and domestic Jews. The dangers were very real, and Streicher's stories gave a blunt and direct account of them.A key feature of Der St羹rmer was its political cartoons. The cover of almost every issue, and several interior pages, displayed cartoons depicting various Jewish dangers, in a most striking and graphic form. The lead cartoonist was a man named 'Fips' Rupprecht. His cartoons quickly became the signature feature of the newspaper. With the demise of National Socialist Germany, Der St羹rmer and Fips' cartoons were largely forgotten. Recently, though, a skilled digital artist named Robert Penman rediscovered the forgotten images. He carefully restored, colorized, and reissued them. Here, in Volume Three of this series, he presents another 250 images as they have never been seen before.Penman has done a masterful job. The images are sharp, crisp, and compelling. The colors are stunningly vivid and the effect is astonishing. Fips' cartoons, originally printed in black and white on cheap newsprint, come alive for the first time. Every image is a small masterpiece. And each one tells a story-a story with relevance for the present day.

Georgia O'Keeffe

Ingram 出版
2025/02/19 出版

An unprecedented examination of the underexplored late work of the iconic American modernist Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) has long been celebrated for her paintings, photographs, and contributions to American modernism in the 1930s and early 1940s, yet her work from the end of World War II through the early 1980s has been largely neglected. In this groundbreaking study, Randall C. Griffin focuses on the major pictorial series that O'Keeffe produced throughout her later career--mysterious abstract depictions of her house in Abiquiu, New Mexico, and its surrounding landscape; voluptuous aerial representations of rivers, skies, and canyons in Arizona; Buddhist-informed depictions of clouds; and daring and enigmatic portrayals of the Washington Monument. Drawing from previously overlooked photographs, letters, objects, and paintings, Griffin reveals how these works reflect O'Keeffe's evolving artistic interests and ambitions while also engaging with contemporary issues such as race, class, gender, indigeneity, spirituality, and ecology. Firmly situating O'Keeffe within the larger cultural and political milieu, this volume offers a new understanding of these visionary works and shows how they were informed by, and enriched, the American postwar artistic landscape.

Art, Feminism, and Community

Ingram 出版
2025/02/18 出版

How do artists, communities, and art connect with one another? How might multiple feminist views be used to interpret art? Art, Feminism, and Community: Feminist Art Histories from Turkey, 1973-1998 examines the lives and communities of artists and their works from Turkey. It suggests that feminisms shape artists' relationships and practices. It analyses seven major case studies and details rarely seen paintings, installations, photographs, drawings, batik, and performance art from 1973 to 1998. The work brings together twenty artists and cultural figures in a world of multifaceted relationships that influence the creation of new art. Uncovering familial, professional, and friendship links, it recreates transnational networks, intellectual collectives, political alliances, and ethnic communities. It demonstrates how artists have analysed their own experiences in their works, reflecting the effects of their communities and lives, even though these themes have been mostly overlooked in Turkish art history.

How to Be Avant-Garde

W. W. Norton 出版
2025/02/14 出版

"Art has poisoned our life," proclaimed Dutch artist and De Stijl cofounder Theo van Doesburg. Reacting to the tumultuous crises of the twentieth century, especially the horrors of World War I, avant-garde artists and writers sought to destroy art by transforming it into the substance of everyday life. Following the evolution of these revolutionary groups, How to Be Avant-Garde charts its pioneers and radical ideas. From Paris to New York, from Zurich to Moscow and Berlin, avant-gardists challenged the confines of the definition of art along with the confines of the canvas itself. Art historian Morgan Falconer starts with the dynamic Futurist founder Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, whose manifesto extolling speed, destruction, and modernity seeded avant-gardes across Europe. In turn, Dadaists Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings sought to replace art with political cabaret, and the Surrealists tried to exchange it for tools to plumb the unconscious. He guides us through the Russian Constructivists with their adventures in advertising and utopianism and then De Stijl with the geometric abstractions of Piet Mondrian. The Bauhaus broke more boundaries, transmuting art into architecture and design. Finally, the Situationists swapped art for politics, with many of their ideas inspiring the 1968 Paris student protests. How to Be Avant-Garde is a journey through the interlocking networks of these richly creative lives with their visions of a better world, their sometimes sympathetic but often strange and turbulent conversations, and their objects and writings that defied categorization.

Prehistoric Pictures and American Modernism

Elke,Seibert  著
Ingram 出版
2025/02/13 出版

In April 1937, the Museum of Modern Art in New York hosted an exhibition that served as a catalyst for the appropriation of prehistoric rock art in postwar abstract painting. With the title "Prehistoric Rock Pictures in Europe and Africa", it displayed a range of copies from the influential collection of the German ethnologist Leo Frobenius.Largely disregarded in modern American art history up until now, this book highlights the importance of this exhibition to artists such as Josef Albers, Adolph Gottlieb, David Smith, and The American Abstract Artists group, who sought inspiration from the prehistoric images' primordial creativity. With a transnational scope, this book reveals new facts about the connections between Paris and New York, and the importance of communication and collaboration between them for these artists. In doing so, Seibert shows that this debate was about more than just legitimizing abstract art forms from the past, but about recognizing an autonomous American abstract art.Presenting unseen archival material, letters, and exhibition documentation, Prehistoric Pictures and American Modernism offers a new reading of the development of modern American abstraction, and will hold an important place in the historiography of the movement, its global traditions, and its legacy.

Van Gogh

National 出版
2025/02/13 出版

An original interpretation of the final years of Van Gogh's career, exploring the people and places in his late paintings The years prior to Van Gogh's death in 1890 were pivotal to the painter's brief artistic career. He was working in the South of France and intent on creating new work which would advance his career. Van Gogh set about developing compositions that were informed by the natural world surrounding him, by the poets and lovers he encountered in literature, and by the individual models he was depicting. The process of his imaginative transformations has never been explored, and this will provide the opportunity to present significant new insights into the much-loved painter's life. The catalogue features an incredible range of ambitious canvases and important works on paper. It presents new research on themes including the artist's innovative approach to exhibiting his work and the varied literary sources that inspired his characters and compositions. These topics are rarely written about in relation to this well-known artist and are bound to expand both scholarly and public interpretations of Van Gogh's remarkable oeuvre. Abstract Art

Pepe,Karmel  著
Thames & H 出版
2025/02/13 出版

In his fresh take on abstract art, now available in paperback and expanded to include sixteen new contemporary artists from six continents, noted art historian Pepe Karmel chronicles the movement from a global perspective, while embedding abstraction in a recognizable reality. Moving beyond the canonical terrain of abstract art, the author demonstrates how artists from around the world have used abstract imagery to express social, cultural, and spiritual experience.Karmel builds this fresh approach to abstract art around five inclusive themes: body, landscape, cosmology, architecture, and man--made signs and patterns. In the process, this history develops a series of narratives that go far beyond the established figures and movements traditionally associated with abstract art. Each narrative is complemented by a number of featured abstract works, arranged in thought--provoking pairings with accompanying extended captions that provide an in--depth analysis. This wide--ranging examination incorporates work from Asia, Australia, Africa, and South America, as well as Europe and North America, through artists ranging from Wu Guanzhong, Joan Mir籀, Jackson Pollock, to Hilma af Klint, and Odili Donald Odita. Breaking new ground, Karmel has forged a new history of this key art movement.

Rediscovered & Reunited

Ingram 出版
2025/02/08 出版

The hidden world of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's unique art frames! Ernst Ludwig Kirchner regarded the picture and its frame as a unit. Contrary to Kirchner's intention that they each belong together, some paintings were separated from their original frames over the years. In Rediscovered & Reunited, they are reunited in a remarkable exhibition, allowing us to rediscover a chapter of modernism that has often been overlooked. Even as a member of the "Br羹cke", Kirchner designed simple wooden frames for his paintings; later in Davos, these were complemented by more elaborate frame profiles with steps and rounded, grooved, and Baroque elements. This volume is dedicated to the frames and their history in detail, showing for the first time, with prestigious international loans, the development of the art of frames from the early to the late work of the famous Expressionist artist. Half linen, visible cardboard, hot foil stamping on cover and spine, trimmed on three sides.

Black Artists in America

Ingram 出版
2025/02/07 出版

This third and final volume in the Black Artists in America series features work from the transitional moment of the late 1970s to the dawn of the twenty-first century In the 1980s and 1990s, Black artists in the United States who came of age during the civil rights activity of the preceding decades began experimenting with new media and innovative approaches to artmaking, often as a way of questioning long-held inequities in the art world and in American society. Artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Glenn Ligon, Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, and many others created works that celebrated their racial identity and fought exclusion and prejudices in the establishment. This book considers the ways that the artists of this generation challenged cultural, environmental, political, racial, and social issues of the last decades of the twentieth century. Black Artists in America: From the Bicentennial to September 11 is the final volume in the three-volume series that traces how Black artists have responded to the social issues of their time. Beautifully illustrated with 150 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, this volume completes the story of a century of artmaking. Published in association with the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Exhibition Schedule: Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA (October 5, 2025-January 11, 2026) Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, TN (January 25-March 29, 2026)

The Art Isles

Ingram 出版
2025/02/07 出版

The British Isles hold a unique position in the history of art, a place where local traditions fuse with international ideas in extraordinary ways At once isolated by coastal boundaries, yet also part of larger networks of diverse peoples, these islands have always benefited from a dual perspective. Artistic creativity in the British Isles stretches back to Ice Age engravings of reindeer, horses and birds. International networks were already shaping prehistoric art and by 1,000 CE artists working in Britain and Ireland were using lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, walrus tusks from Greenland, garnets from India and elephant ivory from Africa. The Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans introduced new styles from overseas, as did later European artists, attracted by the wealth of royal courts. Art was traded and looted across the British empire by colonial explorers, merchants and the military. In the course of the 20th century these islands have been a refuge, but also a place where migrants have faced resistance. Sculptures by Jewish immigrants fleeing Nazi death camps, paintings by post-war Caribbean artists and protest murals sparked by the Troubles in Northern Ireland all express artists' complex relationships with the idea of home. Artists today such as Grayson Perry, Lubaina Himid, Yinka Shonibare, Rachel Whiteread and Edmund de Waal consciously reflect on this long history in their work, exploring concepts of identity and belonging. Fresh, pacy and surprising, The Art Isles tells the story of why art in Britain and Ireland is so rich and dynamic - and why it has always extended far beyond geographical borders.
