Making a Canon

University 出版
2024/11/09 出版

The story of how one scholar's experiences in Sri Lanka shaped the contours of the Buddhist visual canon. An early interpreter of Buddhist art to the West, Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy laid the foundation of what would become the South Asian visual canon, particularly through his efforts to understand how Buddhist art emerged and developed. In Making a Canon, Janice Leoshko examines how Coomaraswamy's experience as the director of a mineralogical survey in Sri Lanka shaped his understanding of South Asian art and religion. Along the way, she reveals how Coomaraswamy's distinctive repetition of Sri Lankan visual images in his work influenced the direction of South Asia's canon formation and left a lasting impression on our understanding of Buddhist art.

Ambivalent Work*s

Diaphanes 出版
2024/11/09 出版

An exploration of queerness in visual and material culture with regard to the specific conditions of the making and experience of art in different cultural, sociopolitical, and historical contexts. ambivalent work*s presents case studies, close- and against-the-grain readings of artworks across different media and geographies, conversations on the epistemological and methodological frameworks of a queerly-informed art history, and artistic contributions. Together they revisit central aspects such as visibility, failure, transgression, and subversion in recent art production while at the same time providing valuable links for transhistorical explorations. Making a case for polyvalence and simultaneity, ambivalent work*s demonstrates how intersectional approaches extend the examination of queer capacities in art and art history beyond issues related solely to sexuality and gender. Scholarly and artistic articulations equally push the boundaries of the academic field of art history while giving shape to an (im)possible project of a "queer art history." This book features contributions by Daniel Berndt, Jennifer Doyle, Aleksandra Gajowy, David J. Getsy, Susanne Huber, Katrin K繹ppert, Christian Liclair, Renate Lorenz, Fiona McGovern, Diyi Mergenthaler, Lucas Odahara, Rena Onat, Barbara Paul, and Ashkan Sepahvand.

Leonardo Da Vinci

Princeton 出版
2024/11/08 出版

How our image of the Renaissance's most famous artist is a modern myth Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) never signed a painting, and none of his supposed self-portraits can be securely ascribed to his hand. He revealed next to nothing about his life in his extensive writings, yet countless pages have been written about him that assign him an identity: genius, entrepreneur, celebrity artist, outsider. Addressing the ethical stakes involved in studying past lives, Stephen J. Campbell shows how this invented Leonardo has invited speculation from figures ranging from art dealers and curators to scholars, scientists, and biographers, many of whom have filled in the gaps of what can be known of Leonardo's life with claims to decode secrets, reveal mysteries of a vanished past, or discover lost masterpieces of spectacular value. In this original and provocative book, Campbell examines the strangeness of Leonardo's words and works, and the distinctive premodern world of artisans and thinkers from which he emerged. Far from being a solitary genius living ahead of his time, Leonardo inhabited a vibrant network of artistic, technological, and literary exchange. By investigating the politics and cultural tensions of the era as well as the most recent scholarship on Leonardo's contemporaries, workshop, and writings, Campbell places Leonardo back into the milieu that shaped him and was shaped by him. He shows that it is in the gaps and contradictions of what we know of Leonardo's life that a less familiar and far more historically significant figure appears.

Between Point Zero and the Iron Curtain

Ingram 出版
2024/11/08 出版

This volume, edited by ?va Forg獺cs, with contributions from art historians from across Europe and the Americas, analyzes the artistic initiatives of the short time span between the end of World War II and the onset of the Cold War. In this moment, a new internationalism was anticipated by retrieving pre-war modernism, as well as creating the new era's new artistic lingua franca. The chapters include in-depth case studies that analyze the complex, often interconnected, projects throughout the world--South America and Eastern and Western Europe--that were soon ended by the Cold War.

Salon Culture in Japan

Akiko,Yano  著
University o 出版
2024/11/08 出版

Celebrates the British Museum's rich collection of artworks created as part of Japanese cultural salonsIn early modern Japan, cultural salons were creative spaces for people of all ages and social levels to pursue painting, poetry, and other artistic endeavors as serious but amateur practitioners. All using a pen- or art-name, individuals were able to socialize and interact broadly through these artistic activities, regardless of official social status as regulated by the shogunal government. The idea of communal and collaborative creativity seems to have been especially ingrained around the area of Kyoto and Osaka. Each of the two cities had a distinct character: Kyoto was the national capital, where the emperor and aristocrats resided, and Osaka was the center of commerce. The technically sophisticated artworks produced in these salons feature lively figures in daily life and festivals, elegant birds and flowers, ferocious animals, and lyrical landscapes, and only a fraction has previously been published in color. With five essays by leading experts that explore this fascinating cultural phenomenon from different angles, plus eight shorter insights that delve into specific historical aspects and the personal connections and legacies of cultural figures, this book offers a new perspective on Japanese art and society in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

All in Line

New York 出版
2024/11/07 出版

A new edition of Saul Steinberg's memoir-via-drawing of his escape from fascist Europe and of his transition into life as an American, capturing absurdities, delights, and the grim realities of war along the way. To escape fascist Europe, the artist Saul Steinberg drew his way to America. He made it to New York in 1942 already in contract with The New Yorker, but was soon called up to serve in the US Naval Reserve in World War II. This book, All In Line, is a memoir-via-drawing of this key time in Steinberg's life, when he began to find his line and his way as an American. In works for The New Yorker and others, Steinberg depicted delightful absurdities and quiet moments: a painter saws a long canvas into smaller, sellable portions; a child draws a gigantic face on the sidewalk to the confusion of passersby; American soldiers stroll through exquisitely detailed streets in China, India, North Africa, and Italy. But Steinberg didn't shy away from the grim realities of his era. There are withering anti-fascist drawings, as well as glimpses of war: skies crowded with bombers, families on the run, army convoys, broken-down jeeps, and smoldering battlefields. This new edition of All in Line includes an introduction by cartoonist Liana Finck, an afterword by Steinberg scholar Iain Topliss on the making of the book, and full captions with notes. It will resonate with both lifelong Steinberg fans as well as those who are encountering his work for the first time.

Chakshudana or Opening the Eyes

Pika,Ghosh  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/05 出版

Chakshudana or rituals of opening the eyes are practiced across multiple South Asian communities by artists, sculptors, and priests. The ritual offers gods access to the mortal world. This practice, applied to the study of material and visual culture, offers a distinctive perspective to interrogate the complex engagements with paintings, sculptures, found objects, fragments, built environments, and ecologies. This volume takes the process of seeing as its focus--to look closely, remaining true to the object, but also to see widely--from multiple subjective stances and diverse bodily engagements such as walking to dreaming, glancing to looking askance, hypnotic stares, and to see beyond the visible. It examines art history through nuanced considerations of materiality, aesthetics, and regional specificities. The essays emerge from current research that builds on the contributions of Michael W. Meister, W. Norman Brown Distinguished Professor of History of Art and South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, whose works laid the foundations for the study of South Asian visual and material culture. The essays in this book underscore methodological resonances rather than privileging conventional categories of media or chronology, exploring artistic media including temples and paintings as well as Bengali-quilted textiles, manuscript 'lozenges, ' and metal repousse. This volume, part of the Visual Media and Histories Series, will be of interest to students and researchers of history of art, religious studies, and history as well as the allied disciplines of anthropology and folklore studies.Chapter 2 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http: //www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

A Chronology of Art

Iain,Zaczek  著
Thames & H 出版
2024/11/05 出版

Most surveys of the history of art come neatly packaged. They are divided up into historic periods, artistic schools and movements, and the careers of individual painters. They may make the subject appear more manageable, but they are oversimplifications. In reality, movements and careers overlapped and intertwined, reacting to events in the world around them. A Chronology of Art places developments in the art world into sharp focus. By prioritizing a purely chronological approach and side-stepping the clich矇s of conventional, academic pigeonholes, it presents an entirely fresh perspective on the subject. The book is structured around a central timeline, which features lavish illustrations of artworks, together with commentaries and additional information about the social, political, and cultural events of the period. The text is divided into four historical sections, becoming more detailed as it nears the present. From 1800 onward, each spread covers a five-year span, which is far more comprehensive than other surveys of this kind. The chronological spreads are interwoven with lively "In Focus" features, highlighting social, stylistic, and technical developments.

The Farm at Black Mountain College

David,Silver  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/01 出版

A record of the rise and fall of the BMC farm that foregrounds the voices of a new cast of characters Black Mountain College (BMC) was a wellspring of 20th-century creative unorthodoxy. From its founding in 1933 and over its celebrated 23-year history, the small liberal arts school in rural North Carolina attracted a remarkable number of famous and soon-to-be famous artists, writers and visionaries including Anni and Josef Albers, Ruth Asawa, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Willem de Kooning, Buckminster Fuller, Ray Johnson, Charles Olson and M.C. Richards. The exploits of these BMC cultural luminaries have been recounted time and time again.David Silver's fascinating new book offers a very different perspective. The farm was vital to BMC. Throughout the Depression and World War II it provided vital sustenance, while serving as a testing ground for self-sufficiency, communal living and collaboration--the most precious and precarious ingredient at the college.Through deep original research, The Farm at Black Mountain College follows renegade students, faculty and farmers as they establish a campus farm in the 1930s, build a better farm in the 1940s and watch it all collapse in the 1950s. We meet a new cast of BMC characters whose stories have seldom, if ever, been explored, and whose adventures in agriculture illuminate what exactly happened at BMC across the decades, from optimistic community building to its plunge into substance-addled scarcity. In these engrossing pages, we encounter the extraordinary folk whose endeavors on the land helped shape the Black Mountain College of myth and extraordinary reality.David Silver (born 1968) is professor and chair of environmental studies at the University of San Francisco. He teaches classes on urban agriculture, hyperlocal food systems and food, culture and storytelling.

Hokusai's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō 1806 Horizontal is the last known full Tokaido series by Hokusai. It is different from his famous 36 Views of Mt Fuji, which are sublime artistic expressions distilling a long life's work.It is different from much of Hokusai's other well known work, like his 100 Views of Mt Fuji. But in that series Hokusai still retained a lot of the humor and the caricature found here.It is different from the many other well known 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō in that Hokusai explores novel ways of designing the print, further developing what he started in the 1804 Horizontal Tokaido.Hokusai experiments with person themes, voids and white space but also do great full landscapes and humorous encounters on the road.

The Painted Word

Tom,Wolfe  著
Picador USA 出版
2024/10/29 出版

Reissued for today's reader with a redesigned cover by the renowned artist Seymour Chwast, Tom Wolfe trains his satirical eye on Modern Art in this "masterpiece" (The Washington Post). What has become of art? In his dazzling and controversial book The Painted Word, Tom Wolfe explores this question and more as he investigates early trends in Modern Art and critiques the critics who dominated the art world during the 1960s and '70s. Wolfe addresses the scope of Modern Art, from its founding days as Abstract Expressionism through its transformations to Pop, Op, Minimal, and Conceptual. He bring into question the work of famous avant-garde artists like Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and others. With gorgeous, pointed prose, Wolfe investigates what has become of Modern Art and examines the control that art critics have over the art world at large. Elegant, hilarious, and devastating, The Painted Word presents a sharp critique of the modern state of art.

Opening the Archive: The ABCs of Zero

Hatje Cantz 出版
2024/10/29 出版

Unpublished archival material looking back on one of the most far-reaching avant-garde art movements in mid-century EuropeThe ZERO avant-garde movement was founded in D羹sseldorf in the 1950s by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, who called it "a zone of silence and pure possibilities for a new beginning." Each traditional concept of art invited a different challenge. Kinetics and light replaced brush and canvas; the studio became the exhibition space, with music playing in the background; books were disseminated with the help of concrete poets. Throughout the '50s and into the 1960s, ZERO took hold in cities across Europe and counted among its ranks artists such as Jean Tinguely, Lucio Fontana and Yves Klein. In The ABCs of ZERO, writers, scholars and authors tell the full story of the movement, from A for atelier to Z for ZERO. A wealth of photos and documents recalls a moment of peaceful utopia in Europe, where society faced the future with a spirit of optimism and creativity.

The Christian Catacombs of Rome

2024/10/29 出版

The new edition of this book was created for the Holy Year 2025, which has the motto 'Pilgrims of Hope'. At the request of Pope Francis, the number of Roman catacombs that are open to the public has been expanded, as they are among the most important witnesses to early Christianity and preserve many martyrs' graves. These are proposed to the Roman pilgrims as important stops, also to commemorate the Christians who are persecuted for their faith in many countries. This book is the second edition of a comprehensive publication on the Christian catacombs of Rome in four languages, which presents the current results of international catacomb research in a clear, comprehensive and up-to-date manner. Three renowned experts, who have been familiar with the subject matter for decades as professors at Roman universities, deal with all relevant questions concerning the topography, iconography and epigraphy of the catacombs: Vincenzo Fiocchi Nicolai discusses the origins and development of the catacombs from their creation in Severan times to their abandonment and decline in the early Middle Ages. Fabrizio Bisconti provides an account of the magnificent paintings in the catacombs, focusing in particular on the pagan and Christian pictorial themes and their mutual influence. Danilo Mazzoleni examines the content of the epitaphs on the basis of selected examples, gaining exciting insights into the everyday life of the early Christians, which captivate the reader with their immediacy and timeless closeness to life. This volume has been updated in terms of content and bibliography and is a reliable companion in this field of research.

Kawase Hasui 40 Prints

Ingram 出版
2024/10/28 出版

Hasui Kawase (川瀬 巴水, May 18, 1883 - November 7, 1957) was a Japanese artist that took up ukiyo-e printing as it disappeared as a commercial printing form and instead became an art for its own sake, so to say.In Hokusai and Hiroshige織s time, first half of the 1800s, ukiyo-e prints were cheap - around the price of a bowl of soup -and filled the market which would later develop in postcards and magazines.Hasui designed traditional prints in a western style, mostly landscapes, often with special lighting effects like evening og night and special weather conditions- he was fond of showing temples and shrines in snow.He worked closely with a single publisher - Shōzaburō Watanabe - throughout his life. The Great Kantō earthquake in 1923 destroyed Watanabe's workshop, including the finished woodblocks for the yet-undistributed prints and Hasui's sketchbooks. He lost 188 sketchbooks in which he had drawn landscapes and other subjects. In 1956, he was named a Japanese Living National Treasure. The government Committee for the Preservation of Intangible Cultural Treasures had intended to honor traditional printmaking via awards to Hasui and Ito Shinsui in 1953.

101 Surrealists

Thames & H 出版
2024/10/28 出版

2024 marks the centennial of surrealism, one of the most influential artistic movements of the modern era. In 1924, Andr矇 Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto, a call to arms that established surrealism as a literary and artistic movement.Surrealism was not in origin an art movement, but a philosophical strategy. It was a way of life--a rebellion against the establishment that had given the world the hideous slaughter of World War I. Instead of trying to analyze the work of the surrealists, bestselling author and surrealist artist Desmond Morris focuses on them as people. What were their personalities, their predilections, their character strengths and flaws? Did they enjoy a social life or were they loners? Were they bold eccentrics or timid recluses? 101 Surrealists features the famous--Leonora Carrington, Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dal穩, Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo, Ren矇 Magritte, Joan Mir籀, and Francis Picabia--and the overlooked: Hans Bellmer, Ithell Colquhoun, Leonor Fini, Julio Gonz獺lez, E. L. T. Mesens, Edith Rimmington, and Kay Sage. The book draws on the author's personal knowledge of the surrealists, capturing in concise form their lives, loves, and idiosyncrasies. The arts of surrealism were both spectacular and international, shaped by the darkest, most irrational workings of the unconscious. Shocking, witty, and always entertaining, Morris's accounts illuminate the striking variation in approaches to the surrealist philosophy, both in the artists' work and in their lives. 101 Surrealists will complement Morris's earlier biographical volumes by encapsulating each artist in short, concise texts that convey with immediacy the impact and significance of each of the 101 artists featured.

David Smith

The first book to explore David Smith's deep engagement with the natural world as source, subject, and site for his art. Spanning the full career of the sculptor David Smith (1906-65), this study features some fifty sculptures alongside related paintings, reliefs, and works on paper to reclaim the primacy of nature within his expansive oeuvre. Smith's adventurous approach to three-dimensional form has permanently expanded the vocabulary and range of sculptural practice. The first American artist to make welded metal sculptures and incorporate industrial means in his work, Smith's enlistment of nature as material and prime setting for his art was equally innovative. As explored in the book's introduction, reflections by the artist's daughters, and an essay by Jed Morse, Smith's creative vision is firmly rooted in landscape and the natural world.

Politics Unseen

Ingram 出版
2024/10/26 出版

In Politics Unseen, Ellen Macfarlane radically reframes the "pure photographs" of California art photography society Group f.64, known for depicting Western landscapes, fruits and vegetables, flowers, and faces. By foregrounding f.64 members' and their prints' alliances across commercial, political, and artistic domains, the book shatters entrenched understandings of the group as disinterested in contemporary events and unseats conceptions of its prints as icons of modernist purity. Instead, Politics Unseen argues the politics of f.64's photographs become visible when interwar ideas about "purity" in the areas of eugenics, racial essence, nutrition, colonialism, and horticulture are interrogated. Ultimately, Politics Unseen alters perceptions not only of f.64, but also of what constituted a political image in 1930s America.

Out of Paper

Katie,Anania  著
2024/10/25 出版

A dynamic look at how artists used paper to radically redefine the relationship between the body and its surroundings, and to propose new conceptions of ecology From sketches created inside pants pockets to paper-strewn performances that took cues from protests and riots, the work on paper in the 1960s acted as a mobile, flexible connective tissue between the body and the world around it. In this book, Katie Anania reveals how artists Carolee Schneemann, William Anastasi, Richard Tuttle, Robert Morris, and Charles White harnessed this historically intimate medium during a period in which Americans were becoming urgently concerned with identity, consumer culture, the overreach of state power, and the rapidly deteriorating natural world. Her reexamination of drawing shows how the omnipresence of paper facilitated artists' critiques of dominant systems, from modern throwaway culture to bureaucracy to colonial violence. Engaging a wide range of actions--such as recycling, recording, cutting, planning, and erasing--Anania offers fresh insights into paper's role not merely as a preparatory medium but one essential to the histories of performance, minimalist, conceptual, and land art. Out of Paper uses materiality studies, social history, and feminist art historical methods to situate paper as a major conduit for thought in the postwar United States.

Luciano Fabro

Monacelli Press 出版
2024/10/20 出版

The definitive monograph on the work of sculptor, theorist, and Arte Povera pioneer Luciano FabroLuciano Fabro (1936-2007) was an original member of Arte Povera, the materials- and experience-based art movement that emerged in Italy in the late 1960s. He went on to be exhibited internationally, becoming the first artist from the group to receive a major US retrospective, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1992. Fabro's work is elusive, yet he remains a critical favorite: in 2018, the leading art publication The Brooklyn Rail dedicated an entire issue to Fabro, wherein Dia Art Foundation director Jessica Morgan commented that Fabro's oeuvre presented 'a marriage of the modern and the antique [...] as surprising and compelling today as at its moment of production.'Written by esteemed critic and curator Margit Rowell, who collaborated with Fabro repeatedly in his later years, this comprehensive, heavily illustrated monograph is the first complete overview of Fabro's career, published with the full support and participation of the artist's estate and international galleries.

The Codex Borbonicus Veintena Imagery

2024/10/18 出版

The sixteenth-century pictorial manuscript known as the Codex Borbonicus contains a remarkable record of the eighteen Mexica (or "Aztec") festival periods of twenty days, known as veintenas, celebrated during the 365-day solar year. Because its indigenous artists framed the Borbonicus veintenas with historical year dates, this volume situates the annually recurring rituals within the march of linear, reckoned time, in the singular year "2 Reed" (1507), during the reign of Moteuczoma II. DiCesare attends to the historical dimensions of several unusual scenes, proposing that the veintenas probably varied significantly from year to year in response to historical concerns. She considers particularly whether the Borbonicus veintenas document the confluence of solar year ceremonies with a second set of ritual feast days, governed by the 260-day cycle known as the tonalpohualli, or "count of days." In this way, DiCesare analyzes how linear and cyclical conceptions of time intersected in Mexica ritual performance.

Chinese Toggles

Shuxia,Chen  著
2024/10/18 出版

Rare objects from one of the world's only major collections This book introduces the understudied cultural artifact of the Chinese belt toggle, known as zhuizi (坠子). Similar to their better-known Japanese counterparts, netsuke, these small carved ornaments offer a rare glimpse into everyday life in early modern China.Toggles were a feature of traditional Chinese garments from the seventeenth century but were scarcely collected. A collaboration between the Powerhouse Museum and Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney, this publication reveals one of the world's largest collections of these extraordinary objects.More than personal accessories, toggles were wearable symbols, embodying Chinese folk traditions and cultural beliefs. Today, they can speak to three hundred years of Chinese culture across various levels of society. These intricately carved miniatures display the finesse of traditional craft skills through a broad range of materials from jade, ivory, and amber to wood, glass, and seeds.Chinese Toggles: Culture in Miniature combines curatorial and scientific analysis of the objects' histories and materials by art historians, archaeologists, scientists, and curators. Edited by the curators of an exhibition of the same name, the book allows a larger audience to engage with these unique objects, pairing academic enquiry with detailed photographic documentation of both the exhibition itself and the catalog of eighty toggles.

The Dominion of Flowers

Mark,Laird  著
Ingram 出版
2024/10/18 出版

How a wave of exotic botanical imports from across Britain's empire shaped its gardens and psyche Between 1760 and 1840, exotic plants were imported from across Britain's empire and were lavishly depicted in periodicals and scientific treatises as specimens collected alongside other objects of natural history. Mark Laird's provocative new book--part art history, part polemic--weaves fine art, botanical illustration, and previously unpublished archival material into a political and ethical account of Britain's heritage, showing how plants were not only integral to English gardens of the Georgian and Victorian eras but also to British culture more broadly. The Dominion of Flowers shines with captivating cross-cultural plant stories. The book opens with the Seymers' exotic Butterflies and Plants and Pulteney's catalogue of Dorset's native wildflowers. It then moves to the German artist John Miller and his illustrations for Lord Bute's Botanical Tables and concludes by tracing Britain's fascination with New Zealand's unique flora, first depicted in Mary Delany's collages. Copiously illustrated with almost two hundred works, and drawing on Laird's genealogical research into his own family's colonial past, this volume foregrounds Indigenous ideas about "plant relations" in a study that brings the trans-oceanic movement of plants and people alive.

Flight Into Egypt

2024/10/18 出版

The first publication to examine the symbolic importance of ancient Egypt to Black artists and other cultural figures, from the nineteenth century through the Harlem Renaissance to the present From the late nineteenth century onward, Black Americans looked to ancient Egypt as evidence of a preeminent ancient culture from the African continent. Flight into Egypt traces ancient Egypt's influence on artists, from Edmonia Lewis's sculpture The Death of Cleopatra (1876) to the efflorescence of Afrocentric visual art during the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and artistic tendencies of the ensuing decades. This volume explores how Black artists, writers, and musicians--and modern and contemporary Egyptian artists--have employed ancient Egyptian imagery to craft a unifying identity. Authors bring to light the overlooked contributions of Black scholars to the study of ancient Egypt, while statements by contemporary Black and Egyptian artists illuminate ancient Egypt's continued hold on the creative imagination. Recycling the Roman Villa

Beth,Munro  著
Ingram 出版
2024/10/17 出版

Though abandoned between the third and seventh centuries CE, many Roman villas enjoyed an afterlife in late antiquity as a source of building materials. Villa complexes currently serve as a unique archaeological setting in that their recycling phases are often better preserved than those at urban sites. Building on a foundational knowledge of Roman architecture and construction, Beth Munro offers a retrospective study of the material value of and deconstruction processes at villas. She explores the technical properties of glass, metals, and limestone, materials that were most frequently recycled; the craftspeople who undertook this work, as well as the economic and culture drivers of recycling. She also examines the commissioning landowners and their rural networks, especially as they relate to church construction. Bringing a multidisciplinary lens to recycling practices in antiquity, Munro proposes new theoretical and methodological approaches for assessing architectural salvage and reprocessing within the context of an ancient circular economy.
