Japanese Art - Transcultural Perspectives

Ingram 出版
2024/12/07 出版

The transcultural approach to Japanese art history embraced by the contributors to this volume centers on the dynamic aesthetic, artistic, and conceptual negotiations across cultural, temporal, and spatial boundaries. It not only acknowledges material objects, people, and technologies as agents, but also intangible practices such as knowledge and concepts as vital agencies of interaction in transcultural processes. With its premise on connectivity, trans-territoriality, networks, and their transformative potential, this research destabilizes categorical configurations such as "center vs. periphery" and "high vs. low," calling into question the classical canon of Japanese art history.

Painting Us Empire

Maggie M,Cao  著
University 出版
2024/12/07 出版

A fresh look at the global dimensions of US painting from the 1850s to 1898. Painting US Empire is the first book to offer a synthetic account of art and US imperialism around the globe in the nineteenth century. In this work, art historian Maggie M. Cao crafts a nuanced portrait of nineteenth-century US painters' complicity with and resistance to ascendant US imperialism, offering eye-opening readings of canonical works, landscapes of polar expeditions and tropical tourism, still lifes of imported goods, genre paintings, and ethnographic portraiture. Revealing how the US empire was "hidden in plain sight" in the art of this period, Cao examines artists including Frederic Edwin Church and Winslow Homer who championed and expressed ambivalence toward the colonial project. She also tackles the legacy of US imperialism, examining Euro-American painters of the past alongside global artists of the present. Pairing each chapter with reflections on works by contemporary anticolonial artists including Tavares Strachan, Nicholas Galanin, and Yuki Kihara, Cao addresses important contemporary questions around representation, colonialism, and indigeneity. This book foregrounds an underacknowledged topic in the study of nineteenth-century US art and illuminates the ongoing ecological and economic effects of the US empire.

The Art of Anna Dorothea Therbusch (1721-1782)

2024/12/06 出版

The Art of Anna Dorothea Therbusch (1721-1782) is the first English-language monograph on this exceptional German artist that critically examines Therbusch's artworks and career as a history and mythological painter, portraitist, and maker of synthetic pigments within the German and international milieu that both condemned and celebrated her accomplishments. Adding to the excellent scholarship on French, British, Italian, and Swiss eighteenth-century women painters, this book showcases the social and cultural practices of court cultures beyond France, with a focus on German-speaking Europe and how a provocative woman painter navigated within them. Meticulous archival and literary research sheds new light on the importance of the family atelier as a place of networking, collaboration, and experimentation in the eighteenth century and provides a fresh perspective on the growing Prussian intellectual and mercantilist cultures and their impact on Therbusch's artistic production and the unavoidable fluency between painting, the minor or luxury arts, and the laboratory. Therbusch's life and art enriches our understanding of female artistic agency and the complexities of pursuing a career in the male- and academy-dominated art world of the eighteenth century.

Erica Rutherford

Pan,Wendt  著
2024/12/04 出版

"The struggle to realize and to express my nature is my life's meaning." -- Erica Rutherford Erica Rutherford: Her Lives and Works accompanies a career-spanning retrospective exhibition of this multidisciplinary Canadian artist and transgender pioneer. An artist, actor, filmmaker, farmer, teacher, and writer, Erica Rutherford's remarkably multifaceted career took her across several countries and continents before settling on Prince Edward Island in the 1970s. There she established herself as a painter and printmaker, using art to engage in a reflection on gender construction and agency. This remarkable retrospective includes reproductions of more than 60 paintings, prints, and drawings, as well as personal photographs. An interview with Rutherford's widow, artist Gail Rutherford, accompanies critical essays by scholars and curators examining Rutherford's stylistic evolution from dark semi-abstract collages to hard-edged Pop Art. Says editor and curator Pan Wendt, "In retrospect, Rutherford's work represents a courageous and often solitary mission of working through questions that are only now part of the mainstream public discourse."

Painters and Communities in Seventeenth-Century Brussels

Ingram 出版
2024/12/03 出版

For many painters in seventeenth-century Brussels, it was not only their artistic talent but also the communities they were part of that determined the course of their careers. This book traces the intricate relationship between social structures and artistic production by examining the lives and works of all 353 painters who became masters in the Brussels Guild of Painters, Goldbeaters, and Stained-Glass Makers between 1599 and 1706. This innovative exploration of a social history of art seamlessly integrates quantitative digital analyses at the macro-level with micro-level qualitative case studies. This fresh approach facilitates a comparative perspective on the various environments in which painters operated, allowing for new readings of how early modern artists - both in Brussels and beyond - created their art, earned a living, and navigated the complexities of urban life. Painters and Communities in Seventeenth-Century Brussels is also the first work to provide a global overview of the Brussels Baroque, including extensive lists with biographical information on all of the city's master painters.

Ancient Thrace and the Classical World

J. Paul Gett 出版
2024/11/30 出版

A captivating examination of the profound impact Thracian art and culture had on the Greeks and the entire northern Aegean region. The Thracians--a collection of tribal peoples who inhabited territories north of ancient Greece, an area that comprises present-day Bulgaria, much of Romania, and parts of Greece and Turkey--were renowned for their skill as warriors and horsemen, as well as for their wealth in precious metals. Thracians left few written records, and knowledge of their history and customs has long been dependent on brief accounts from ancient Greek authors. They appeared in Greek myth as formidable adversaries in the Trojan War, cruel kings, and followers of the ecstatic god Dionysos. Spectacular archaeological discoveries made in Thracian lands during modern times, however, have provided firsthand evidence of this remarkable culture, illuminating Thrace's interactions with Greece, Persia, and Rome. Ancient Thrace and the Classical World reproduces more than two hundred glorious objects dating from the end of the Bronze Age, around 1200 BC, to the end of the first century AD, when Thrace became part of the Roman Empire. Experts explore topics such as Thracian royal tombs, the Greek colonization of the Black Sea coast, Thracian religion, and more, placing Thracian culture in a broader historical context that highlights its complex relationships with the surrounding region. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa from November 6, 2024, to March 3, 2025.

The Colonial and National Formations of the National College of Arts, Lahore, Circa 1870s to 1960s

Ingram 出版
2024/11/28 出版

Drawing on archival sources, this book provides an anthropological exploration of the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore, tracing its evolution from the Mayo School of Arts established in 1875. As a counterpart to London's South Kensington School of Design (now the Royal College of Art), the Mayo School emerged as a crucial site for the dissemination of colonial art education in British India, alongside similar institutions in Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. Named to honor Lord Earl of Mayo, the only Viceroy of India assassinated in office, it was founded by Lockwood Kipling and featured a distinguished roster of educators including Ram Singh, Percy Brown, Lionel Heath, S.N. Gupta, B.C. Sanyal, and A.R. Chughtai. The Mayo School also initiated the Journal of Indian Art and Industry, a seminal publication utilizing cutting-edge chromolithography techniques. The book employs theoretical analysis to understand how the NCA, functioning as a bureaucratic entity, has shaped the landscape of design education, museums, and artistic practices in both colonial and postcolonial contexts. From its roots in British art education, derived from South Kensington, the institution's trajectory reflects its adaptation through American reforms in the early years of Pakistani independence. This analysis critically examines how frameworks of art history and anthropology have been mobilized to construct and objectify Pakistani art and artists. Furthermore, the book explores the contributions of colonial anthropologists such as Richard Temple, Denzil Ibbetson, and Baden Powell, who were instrumental in the establishment and administration of the Mayo School. Their work in ethnographic reconstruction provided a cultural framework that influenced the education of artisan castes, situating them within a "primitive" Punjabi context. This colonial subtext profoundly impacted the pedagogical approaches of the Mayo School, which also nurtured the emergence of the Indo-Saracenic architectural style and supported traditional Punjabi painting. Despite its industrial art orientation, the Mayo School was pivotal in the development of a modern Punjab painting tradition recognized at the British Indian Empire Exhibition of 1924. Under the guidance of Lionel Heath, the school began to embrace modern art, with printmaking, graphic design, and sculpture taking root in the 1930s through the efforts of B.C. Sanyal and M.M. Hussain. The Mayo School's printing press produced a diverse array of materials, reflecting major Western art movements from Arts and Crafts to Art Deco and Bauhaus. In the formative years of Pakistan, the Mayo School transitioned into the National College of Arts in 1958, modeled after the Bauhaus with departments in Fine Art, Design, and Architecture. Influential figures such as poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, painter Shakir Ali, art patron Ghulam Mueenuddin, and American sculptor Mark Sponenburgh were pivotal in shaping the NCA as Pakistan's premier institution for art and design. Through a critical examination of art history and anthropological frameworks, this book elucidates how imperial and nationalist discourses have intersected to shape and redefine artistic and cultural identities within Pakistan.

Naturalism's Imaginary Museum, French Art, and the Eclectic Nineteenth Century

Sara,Pappas  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/27 出版

Naturalism's Imaginary Museum, French Art, and the Eclectic Nineteenth Century examines one of the most revered art historical narratives of Western art: the famous turning point for painting and sculpture usually emblematized by the works of ?douard Manet and then the Impressionists.Instead of the usual revaluation of this turning point, Sara Pappas argues for the importance of the failure to find a cohesive story for the art world in the period itself, a difficulty that carries forward to galleries today. In order to demonstrate the importance of incongruity and disorder, Pappas brings together two worlds that may seem incompatible: nineteenth-century literary writers involved in naturalism and the organization of permanent collections of later nineteenth-century French art in today's museums. Drawing on the art novels and art criticism of these writers, the book provides optimal access to the questions that continue to haunt the categorization and display of nineteenth-century art.

Paradigm of Information Design in China (2009-2019)

Xing,Yang  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/26 出版

This scholarly work presents a comprehensive set of design paradigm research models developed by the author, encompassing a design classification model, a relational model among paradigms, and a descriptive indicator system for design paradigms. These models were employed to decode China's information design paradigm during the pivotal transition from 2009 to 2019, a period marked by significant advancements in information technology in China. The book reveals us that, China is forming an information design paradigm that focuses on long-term benefits and balancing relationships rather than creating artifacts, which is dually affected by the development of global information technology and China's domestic economic, cultural, and design education development strategies. Design practitioners are more and more willing to set design goals from the perspective of the supply-side and are carrying out extensive design cooperation on data-driven platforms. Practically, grasping this emerging design paradigm is essential for practitioners to understand the latest trends in information design. Theoretically, the design paradigm models offer researchers valuable tools for their investigations. This publication was supported by Guangdong Provincial Education Science Planning Project (Higher Education Special Project, 2023GXJK508) and Huizhou University Doctoral Research Initiation Project (2022JB051).

Armenophobia

Ivan,Foletti  著

Despite its incredible richness, the Armenian cultural heritage remains today at the margins of the art historical canon. The roots of this situation can be traced back to the second half of 19th century when Armenian art was deliberately marginalized by the official scholarship within the Russian Empire. By providing a historiographical examination of this context, we aim to demonstrate how medieval Armenian art became a tool in the Russian imperialistic policy. Besides, we also attempt to address the impact of the late 19th-century imperialism on our present.

Maurice de Vlaminck

2024/11/24 出版

This lavishly illustrated exhibition catalog features 70 career-spanning works by the French avant-garde painter, one of the 20th century's great colorists and a major proponent of Fauvism. After his participation at the Paris Salon d'Automne of 1905, Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) quickly established himself as a leading figure of the French avant-garde. More than any other member of the Fauves, he keenly identified with the attribute of wildness and early on propagated the image of a modern artist rebel who resolutely turned his back on the rules of academic painting. His central source of inspiration was the oeuvre of Vincent van Gogh, whose works Vlaminck studied at the large solo exhibition which took place at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery in 1901. Van Gogh's training as an autodidact as well as his burgeoning myth as an artist genius and social outsider strengthened this identification, which would remain key throughout Vlaminck's later career. This catalog provides a wide- ranging overview of the painter's entire oeuvre: from the first compositions he executed at the beginning of the 20th century, through the experiments with Cubism that were inspired by Cézanne and Picasso, to some of his very last landscapes. Throughout, the book recalls Vlaminck's vital contribution to the development of 20th-century painting, notably his role as one of the most important precursors of Expressionism.

Art in a State of Siege

Princeton 出版
2024/11/23 出版

An art historical epic for dangerous times What do artworks look like in extreme cases of collective experience? What signals do artists send when enemies are at the city walls and the rule of law breaks down, or when a tyrant suspends the law to attack from inside? Art in a State of Siege tells the story of three compelling images created in dangerous moments and the people who experienced them--from Philip II of Spain to Carl Schmitt--whose panicked gaze turned artworks into omens. Acclaimed art historian Joseph Koerner reaches back to the eve of iconoclasm and religious warfare to explore the most elusive painting ever painted. In Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Delights, enemies are everywhere: Jews and Ottomans at the gates, witches and heretics at home, sins overtaking the mind. Following a paper trail leading from Bosch's time to World War II, Koerner considers a monumental self-portrait painted by Max Beckmann in 1927. Created when Germany was often governed by emergency decree, this image brazenly claimed to decide Europe's future--until the Nazis deemed it to be a threat to the German people. For South African artist William Kentridge, Beckmann exemplified "art in a state of siege." Koerner shows how his work served as beacon during South Africa's racialist apartheid rule and inspired Kentridge's breakthrough animations of drawings being made, erased, and remade. Spanning half a millennium but urgent today, Art in a State of Siege reveals how, in dire straits, art becomes the currency of last resort.

German Expressionism

Ingram 出版
2024/11/23 出版

Reverberations of the young rebels and influencers in the artist group Br羹cke. The artist group Br羹cke is Germany's most important contribution to international modernism. The group was formed in Dresden in 1905 by four young architecture students: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Together they developed a painting style with vivid colors, simplified forms, and large color fields that express internal feelings rather than reproducing an external reality. The group disbanded in 1913, but their collaboration and marketing strategies have been inspirational for several generations of artists. These young artists wanted to renew art and life in the German Imperial Empire and break with the prevailing moral norms of the day. They were interested in topics like man and nature; the naked body; portraits; self-portraits; the merging of life and art; and life in the vibrant metropolis of Berlin. In a time like the present, when a young generation feels the need for a new way of living, thinking, and organizing, reflecting on Br羹cke feels particularly relevant.

Nuyorican and Diasporican Visual Art

Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

Although Puerto Rican artists have always been central figures in contemporary American and international art worlds, they have largely gone unrecognized and been excluded from art history canons. Nuyorican and Diasporican Visual Art provides a critical survey of Puerto Rican art production in the United States from the 1960s to the present. The contributors assert the importance and contemporaneity of the Nuyorican art movement by tracing its emergence alongside other American vanguardist movements, highlighting its innovations, and exploring it as an expression of Puerto Rican culture beyond New York to include cities such as Chicago, Philadelphia, and Orlando. They also foreground the contributions and radical aesthetics of female, Black, and queer Puerto Rican artists. Following the expansion and decentralization of the Puerto Rican diaspora and its artistic output, this volume is a call to action for scholars, curators, and artists to address the historical inequalities that have marginalized Diasporican artists and reassess the presence of Puerto Rican artists. Ito Shinsui Bijin-ga Censored

Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

This version of the title is censored on the demands of self-publishing platform BOD.es in Spain, which is a subsidiary of the German self-publishing platform BOD.de. Formally the demands are for covering up nipples on old Japanese prints. There is no improper content. The authors believe that the real reason however, is politically motivated, because it was a condition of publishing and not a result of the identification of any special audience opportunity. However, there may just be such an audience, which this issue of the title will then accomodate. Shinsui Ito was born 4 February 1898 in the Fukagawa district of Tokyo and died 8 May 1972.Shinsui Itō was his pseudonym.Shinsui designed mostly bijin-ga and only more occasionally landscape prints, see Shinsui Ito Landscapes by authors. Bijin-ga is "pretty ladies", akin to pin-up art.Bijin-ga (美人画, びじんが, "beautiful person picture") is a generic term for pictures of beautiful women (bijin) in Japanese art, especially in woodblock printing of the ukiyo-e genre. At the age of ten, young Hajime found employment at the Tokyo Printing Company after his father織s business went bankrupt, and here he began to show serious interest and talent in Nihonga, Japanese-style painting. In 1911 he was introduced to Kaburagi Kiyokata, a renowned painter, and became Kiyokata's student. It was Kiyokata that gave Hajime his artist's name, Shinsui. When Shinsui was eighteen years old, his paintings were seen by the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo at an exhibition at Kiyokata's art school.Ukiyo-e itself is a genre of woodblock prints and paintings that was produced in Japan from the 17th century to the 19th century. The prints were very popular amongst the Japanese merchants and the middle class of the time.

Art Against Authoritarianism in Southwest Asia and North Africa

Tijen,Tunali  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

Over the past decade, there has been a burgeoning interest in the realm of art activism within the Southwest Asia and North Africa region, shedding light on the political implications of aesthetic representation. Nevertheless, a critical inquiry into how political aesthetics can formulate both discernible and imperceptible resistance strategies in response to resurging authoritarianism and counter-revolution after the 2011 uprisings in the region remains conspicuously absent. This book delves into a comprehensive examination of diverse art forms, ranging from street art and cinema to performance art, as well as music and theatre, scrutinizing the manifestations of aesthetic resilience at the epicentre of the political resistance against oppression and authoritarianism in Sudan, Iran, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Yemen and Syria. The editors employ a multifaceted approach to investigate artistic activism, encompassing analysis of visibility, ephemerality, and speech within the public sphere, the establishment and perpetuation of collective transnational solidarities, the portrayal of suppressed identities and narratives, and the innovation of alternative mechanisms for producing and disseminating art.

Design Dilemma

Birkhauser 出版
2024/11/16 出版

Amalia Mesa-Bains

2024/11/16 出版

The life and work of a celebrated multimedia artist, cultural and feminist theorist, and community organizer Amalia Mesa-Bains has garnered international recognition for multimedia installations that evoke the Chicana experience. This lively book recounts pivotal moments from her life, career, and collaborations, examining the intertwined worlds of Latinx culture, social movements, and contemporary art. Esteemed cultural historian Tom獺s Ybarra-Frausto relates Mesa-Bains's life to contemporary events and her artistic and intellectual production to her concept of domesticana (a feminist interpretation of rasquachismo) and her mestiza identity. He demonstrates how the Chicano Movement attuned the artist to her Mexican heritage, sparking her interest in the traditional home altars that became the aesthetic and cultural inspiration for her installation art. Employing detailed descriptions and analyses of key works, this book is an "art historical biography-memoire," offering a uniquely personal understanding of Mesa-Bains's prolific artistic practice and situating her life and art in the cultural and political milieu of the United States since the 1960s. Distributed for UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center Press.

Nowville

Joe,Nolan  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/15 出版

This is the origin story of Nashville's surging contemporary art scene told by the ones who were there before anyone else. Not a story about commercial spaces or official institutions-this is the story of moldy warehouse studios and improvised galleries, happy-kegger after-parties and front lawn art sales, exhibitions in apartment living rooms and secret art displays hidden in plain sight. Nowville is an oral history of the Nashville art scene beginning in the 1990s. Author Joe Nolan tracks down the city's art punks, art monks, radical art students, and visionary pioneers to share what made their moments in Nashville so special. He also offers insights into how this homespun movement powered by DIY innovating came to be a thriving creative community and a cornerstone of the city's contemporary allure.

Projecting Desire

Ingram 出版
2024/11/15 出版

How middle-class women transformed India's screen and exhibition industries Since the late 90s, multiplexes in India have almost always been located inside malls, rendering it impossible to inhabit one space without also inhabiting the other. Their prevalence coincides with a shift in the spectatorial imagination of India's mass audience-spaces that, for several preceding decades, had been designed for the subaltern male, but are now built for the consuming, globalized middle-class woman. By catering to the mutable desires and anxieties of a rapidly expanding and heterogeneous middle class, the mall-multiplex has radically altered the politics of theatrical space and moviegoing. Projecting Desire tells the story of this moment of historic transition as it played out across media industries, architecture and design, popular cinema, and public culture. Tupur Chatterjee highlights how the multiplex established a new link between media and architecture in the subcontinent, not only rewriting the relation between gender and urban space, but also changing the shapes of Indian cities. Projecting Desire locates the post-globalization transformation of India's screen and exhibition industries in a longer arc of ideas about urban planning and architecture, long mired in caste- and class-based gendered anxieties. It argues that the architectural mediations of India's moviegoing cultures are key to imagining, planning, and policing the contemporary media city. Chatterjee integrates industrial and organizational ethnography, in-depth interviews, participant observation, discourse and textual analysis, and archival work with spatial and urban histories. Focusing on these new meccas of leisure and entertainment, Projecting Desire tracks the understudied nexus between new media architectures, cultures of public leisure, and popular cinema in the Global South.

Leonardo Da Vinci and the Perfumes of the Renaissance

Skira Paris 出版
2024/11/14 出版

An olfactory approach to da Vinci's work through the smells of his materials and his years spent living in TuscanyThis exhibition catalog is a journey into the perfumes of the Renaissance through the daily life of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). The book delves into the scents of this brilliant era: the spices, incense and musks of Constantinople; the perfumed costumes of Venice, Florence, Milan; and the court of Francis I of France. It highlights the plants of the Tuscan master's childhood, such as olive, jasmine, juniper and lemon and orange trees, as well as the smells of the workshop including walnut and linseed oils, rabbit skin glue, resins, waxes and fats. Leonardo himself concocted fragrant recipes, from the most delicate to the most intense, using enfleurage and distillation techniques. This ambitious catalog features reconstitutions of objects designed by Leonardo, such as an alembic or the famous amber necklace from The Lady with an Ermine.

Pink

Princeton 出版
2024/11/12 出版

From the acclaimed author of Blue and other color histories, the beautifully illustrated story of pink, from the first ancient pigments to Barbie Pink has such powerful associations today that it's hard to imagine the color could ever have meant anything different. But it's only since the introduction of the Barbie doll in 1959 that pink has become decisively feminized. Indeed, in the eighteenth century, pink was frequently masculine, and the color has signified many things beyond gender over the course of its long history--from the prim to the vulgar, and from the romantic to the eccentric. In this richly illustrated book, Michel Pastoureau, a celebrated authority on the history of colors, presents a fascinating visual, social, and cultural history of pink in the West, from antiquity to today. Pink pigments first appear in ancient Macedonian paintings, but it was not until the eighteenth century that vivid, saturated pinks were developed for dyeing and painting. At the same time, a popular new flower--the pink rose--finally gave the color a standard name, and pink, assuming a place in everyday life, began to acquire its own symbolism, distinct from that of red, yellow, or white. Bringing the story up to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Pink describes how the color, both adored and detested, became associated with many other things, from softness and pleasure to nudity and sex. Illustrated throughout with a wealth of captivating images, Pink is an entertaining and enlightening account of the evolving role and significance of the color in art, fashion, literature, religion, science, and everyday life across the millennia.

Crusader Rhetoric and the Infancy Cycles on Medieval Baptismal Fonts in the Baltic Region

2024/11/12 出版

This is the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary analysis to demonstrate that the representation of Infancy cycles on twelfth-and-thirteenth-century baptismal fonts was primarily a northern predilection in the Latin West directly influenced by the contemporary military campaigns. The Infantia Christi Corpus, a collection of approximately one-hundred-and-fifty fonts, verifies how the Danish and Gotland workshops modified and augmented biblical history to reflect the prevailing crusader ideology and rhetoric that dominated life during the Valdemarian era in the Baltic region. The artisans constructed the pictorial programs according to the readings of the Mass for the feast days in the seasons of Advent, Christmas and Epiphanytide. The political ambitions of the northern leaders and the Church to create a Land of St. Peter in the Baltic region strategically influenced the integration of Holy Land motifs, warrior saints, militia Christi and martyrdom in the Infancy cycles to justify the escalating northern conquests. Neither before nor after, in the history of baptismal fonts, have so many been ornamented with the Infancy cycle in elaborate pictorial programs. A brief revival of elaborate Infancy cycles occurs on the fourteenth and fifteenth century fonts commissioned for sites previously located in the Christian borderlands east of the Elbe River with the rise of the Baltic military orders and the advancement of the Church authority. This extraordinary study integrates theological, liturgical, historical and political developments, broadening our understanding of what constituted northern crusader art in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

Hampstead

John,Walde  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/11 出版

This is the most detailed reference work on Hampstead artists to date. It contains potted biographical information on thousands of entries and is the result of nearly 20 years of research.Biographical lexicographers are a rare breed, and John Walde stands out among us for his extraordinary perseverance. When I met him 18 years ago, he had already unearthed a remarkable amount of new information; there is much more now. His work has been the more difficult and is all the more valuable where births, marriages, deaths and so on are concerned, because of his self-imposed rule only to use information from original government and official documents. The internet has changed much about our task, but shoe-leather, inspiration and persistence are still vital, as John Walde demonstrates. - Huon Mallalieu, author of The Biographical Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists. Many years ago I saw the draft of this thoroughly researched publication and was excited by what I saw. From years of experience, I am aware of how difficult it can be to trace information of lesser known artists with a local connection and encouraged the author and eagerly awaited its publication. It has now arrived and will be an invaluable reference guide that I know I will use often. - Malcolm Holmes MBE, Camden History Society Chair, former Camden Borough Archivist.
