Migrations
Migrations is a new series of artworks by Danish artist Bibi Katholm. Over a year in development, the paintings are a major shift in Katholm's work, signifying a step towards full abstraction along with a totally fresh approach to displaying paintings. This new direction and approach to painting is now displayed in book form. Katholm's new series embodies a spirit of playfulness that is true to the essence of the creative process. In 'Migrations', paintings become dynamic entities that interact, and self reflect, tempting viewers to rethink what a painting can be. Paintings move off the walls, invert themselves, and show their backsides proudly, as they become sculptural elements, enticing viewers to view them from all sides. Paint becomes both subject and actor, accentuating its liquid quality, while flowing through pictorial space and more literally the raw canvas. The back sides of images become the front.

The Franco-German War of 1870-71 had far-reaching consequences. It established both the German Empire and the French Third Republic and set in train the alliances that had formed when Germany first declared war on Russia in August 1914.The monarchies of all four of the great powers, Britain, Russia, Austro-Hungary, and Germany, were either unprepared for leadership, too old or irrational and easily manipulated by a small coterie of military advisers. All failed to provide the resolution, direction, or coordination of their respective foreign policies. They were little more than spectators as the world "slithered over the brink into the boiling cauldron of war."By the end of the war, four major imperial powers-the German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian, and Ottoman empires, no longer existed. It set in motion the restructuring of the political order in other parts of the world, particularly in the Middle East. It was in effect a historical full stop. Schiele in Prison
In April of 1912, twenty-one-year old Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918), known for his frank depictions of erotica as well as his Expressionist portraits, was arrested and imprisoned in a basement cell in the rural town of Neulengbach, some twenty miles from Vienna. There he made agonized diary entries and created twelve drawings of his dank surroundings. Half a century later, in August of 1963, as an enterprising PhD student from Texas in search of all sites and persons having to do with Schiele, the author of this book did what no previous scholar had yet done. She located and photographed the forgotten cellar and cell in which Schiele had been unjustly incarcerated. This book presents an English translation of the artist's extraordinary prison diary, a biographical chronology, and two essays, one concerning Schiele's cultural context, and the other, an enlightening analysis of the pungent artworks created in prison.

Abject Eroticism in Northern Renaissance Art
Hans Baldung Grien, the most famous apprentice and close friend of German artist Albrecht D羹rer, was known for his unique and highly eroticised images of witches. In paintings and woodcut prints, he gave powerful visual expression to late medieval tropes and stereotypes, such as the poison maiden, venomous virgin, the Fall of Man, 'death and the maiden' and other motifs and eschatological themes, which mingled abject and erotic qualities in the female body. Yvonne Owens reads these images against the humanist intellectual milieu of Renaissance Germany, showing how classical and medieval medicine and natural philosophy interpreted female anatomy as toxic, defective and dangerously beguiling. She reveals how Hans Baldung exploited this radical polarity to create moralising and titillating portrayals of how monstrous female sexuality victimised men and brought them low. Furthermore, these images issued from-and contributed to-the contemporary understanding of witchcraft as a heresy that stemmed from natural 'feminine defect, ' a concept derived from Aristotle. Offering new and provocative interpretations of Hans Baldung's iconic witchcraft imagery, this book is essential reading for historians of art, culture and gender relations in the late medieval and early modern periods.

The Last Crusades
The final attempts by European forces to capture Jerusalem and dominate the Holy Land The strategy of the Fourth Crusade (1202-04) was to first defeat the Egyptian Ayyubid Sultanate-the most powerful Muslim force. However, the Christian cause quickly became corrupted when it laid siege to and sacked the Christian city of Zara in Croatia (1202) before advancing on and sacking Byzantine Constantinople and partitioning the empire. Only a handful of the crusaders reached the Holy Land. The Fifth Crusade (1217-21) also attempted to subdue Egypt. Staging Art and Chineseness
This book addresses the politics of borders in the era of global art by exploring the identification of Chinese artists by location and exhibition. Focusing on performative, body-oriented video works by the post-1989 generation, it tests the premise of genealogical inscription and the ways in which cultural objects are attributed to the artist's residency, homeland or citizenship rather than cultural tradition, style or practice. Acknowledging historical definitions of Chineseness, including the orientalist assumptions of the past and the cultural-mixing of the present, the book's case studies address the paradoxes and contradictions of representation. An analysis of the historical matrix of global expositions reveals the structural connections among art, culture, capital and nation.
Henry James Framed
Henry James Framed is a cultural history of Henry James as a work of art. Throughout his life, James demonstrated an abiding interest in--some would say an obsession with--the visual arts. In his most influential testaments about the art of fiction, James frequently invoked a deeply felt analogy between imaginative writing and painting. At a time when having a photographic carte de visite was an expected social commonplace, James detested the necessity of replenishing his supply or of distributing his autographed image to well-wishing friends and imploring readers. Yet for a man who set the highest premium on personal privacy, James seems to have had few reservations about serving as a model for artists in other media and sat for his portrait a remarkable number of twenty-four times. Surprisingly few James scholars have brought into primary focus those occasions when the author was not writing about art but instead became art himself, through the creative expression of another's talent. To better understand the twenty-four occasions he sat for others to represent him, Michael Anesko reconstructs the specific contexts for these works' coming into being, assesses James's relationships with his artists and patrons, documents his judgments concerning the objects produced, and, insofar as possible, traces the later provenance of each of them. James's long-established intimacy with the studio world deepened his understanding of the complex relationship between the artist and his sitter. James insisted above all that a portrait was a revelation of two realities: the man whom it was the artist's conscious effort to reveal and the artist, or interpreter, expressed in the very quality and temper of that effort. Glory and Exile: Haida History Robes of Jut-ke-Nay Hazel Wilson marks the first time this monumental cycle of ceremonial robes by the Haida artist Jut-Ke-Nay (The One People Speak Of)--also known as Hazel Anna Wilson--is viewable in its entirety. On 51 large blankets, Wilson uses painted and appliqu矇d imagery to combine traditional stories, autobiography, and commentary on events such as smallpox epidemics and environmental destruction into a grand narrative that celebrates the resistance and survival of the Haida people, while challenging the colonial histories of the Northwest Coast. Of the countless robes Wilson created over fifty-plus years, she is perhaps best known for The Story of K'iid K'iyaas, a series about the revered tree made famous by John Vaillant's 2005 book The Golden Spruce. Maniera Greca in Europe’s Catholic East
How and why does vernacular art become foreign? What does 'Greek manner' mean in regions far beyond the Mediterranean? What stories do images need? How do narratives shape pictures? The study addresses these questions in Byzantine paintings from the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania, contextualized with evidence from Poland, Serbia, Russia, and Italy. The research follows developments in artistic practices and the reception of these images, as well as distinguishing between the Greek manner - based on visual qualities - and the style favoured by the devout, sustained by cults and altered through stories. Following the reception of Byzantine and pseudo-Byzantine art in Lithuania and Poland from the late fourteenth through the early eighteenth centuries, Maniera Greca in Europe's Catholic Easit argues that tradition is repetitive order achieved through reduction and oblivion, and concludes that the sole persistent understanding of the Greek image has been stereotyped as the icon of the Mother of God.

A Year With Kurt Schwitters 2021-2022 - catalogue
Award winning artist Anthony Padgett's book of over 50 artworks in response to International artist Kurt Schwitters who spent his final year in the Lake District. Schwitters is well know for his "Merz" collage art which used discarded items. Next year marks the 75th anniversary of Schwitters' death, in Kendal. Padgett explores this and also how Schwitters rose to fame through his Dada poetry, and how he was on the Romantic and expressionist side of Dadaism and Constructivist. This, coupled with his love of poetry and landscape painting, links him to the Lake District and the tradition of William Wordsworth. Anthony D Padgett worked at Dove Cottage, Grasmere, in the 1990s and whose sculptures of poets and artists like Wilfred Owen, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso are sited in key locations in the UK and abroad. More than Meets the Eye
In 2004, Irving Lavin gave the six lectures that make up this book. They were delivered at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, as part of the Andrew W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts, an annual series established in 1949, as Mellon himself said, "to bring to the people of the United States the results of the best contemporary thought and scholarship." Lavin's lectures as delivered, however, were only the first step in expressing his results. He continued to develop the texts over the next decade and a half."More than Meets the Eye" is a simple phrase hiding an unexpected wealth of meaning. English literature, ranging from Milton to Galsworthy, provides parallels to the modern turn of phrase. It became a popular piece of jargon in the development of American advertising, and by the 1930s it headed illustrated ads that flooded the market with pictures meant to show the qualities of the merchandise consumers were being encouraged to buy. It even had its antithesis: "What you see is what you get," with an acronym "wysiwyg," still in use at the beginning of the twenty-first century, mainly to describe the page-like interface - hiding a myriad of computer technology - of Macintosh and other computer systems.This book's subtitle, "Irony, Paradox, and Metaphor in the History of Art," contains terms associated with rhetoric, oratory, and literature. New Tendencies
An account of a major international art movement originating in the former Yugoslavia in the 1960s, which anticipated key aspects of information aesthetics. New Tendencies, a nonaligned modernist art movement, emerged in the early 1960s in the former Yugoslavia, a nonaligned country. It represented a new sensibility, rejecting both Abstract Expressionism and socialist realism in an attempt to formulate an art adequate to the age of advanced mass production. In this book, Armin Medosch examines the development of New Tendencies as a major international art movement in the context of social, political, and technological history. Doing so, he traces concurrent paradigm shifts: the change from Fordism (the political economy of mass production and consumption) to the information society, and the change from postwar modernism to dematerialized postmodern art practices. Medosch explains that New Tendencies, rather than opposing the forces of technology as most artists and intellectuals of the time did, imagined the rapid advance of technology to be a springboard into a future beyond alienation and oppression. Works by New Tendencies cast the viewer as coproducer, abolishing the idea of artist as creative genius and replacing it with the notion of the visual researcher. In 1968 and 1969, the group actively turned to the computer as a medium of visual research, anticipating new media and digital art. Medosch discusses modernization in then-Yugoslavia and other nations on the periphery; looks in detail at New Tendencies' five major exhibitions in Zagreb (the capital of Croatia); and considers such topics as the group's relation to science, the changing relationship of manual and intellectual labor, New Tendencies in the international art market, their engagement with computer art, and the group's eventual eclipse by other "new art practices" including conceptualism, land art, and arte povera.
