Painting, Ethics, and Aesthetics in Rome
In the first centuries BCE and CE, Roman wall painters frequently placed representations of works of art, especially panel paintings, within their own mural compositions. Nathaniel B. Jones argues that the depiction of panel painting within mural ensembles functioned as a meta-pictorial reflection on the practice and status of painting itself. The Philosophy of Mannerism
Sjoerd van Tuinen argues for the inseparability of matter and manner in the form of a group portrait of Leibniz, Bergson, Whitehead, Souriau, Simondon, Deleuze, Stengers, and Agamben. Examining afresh the 16th-century style of mannerism, this book synthesizes philosophy and aesthetics to demonstrate not only the contemporary relevance of artists such as Michelangelo or Arcimboldo but their broader significance as incorporating a form of modal thinking and perceiving. While looking at mannerism as a style that spurned the balance and proportion of earlier Renaissance models in favour of compositional instability and tension, this book also conceives of mannerism a-historically to investigate what it can tell us about continental modal metaphysics. Whereas analytical metaphysics privileges logical essence and asks whether something is possible, real, contingent, or necessary, continental philosophy privileges existence and counts as many modes as there are ways of coming-into-being. In three main parts, van Tuinen first explores the ontological, aesthetic, and ethical ramifications of this distinction. He then develops this through an extended study of Leibniz as a modal and indeed mannerist philosopher, before outlining in the final part a (neo)-mannerist aesthetics that incorporates diagrammatics, alchemy, and contemporary technologies of speculative design.

Wonderful Ontario Wine
For more than a century, the Ontario wine industry had found success producing mainly ports and sherries from American hybrid grapes, but as the 1970s approached, consumer tastes were changing and sales of the higher-alcohol wines were decreasing significantly. A new, low-alcohol refreshment wine named "Baby Duck," produced by Andres winery from native labrusca varieties like Concord, became an overnight sensation, inspiring other wineries to imitate the "pop wine" style through the decade and helping to prop up sales, but overall, imported table wines continued to gain more and more market share. Some were beginning to question the future of the Ontario grape and wine industry.Within another 20 years, the native grapes that had sustained our winemaking for so long would finally be outlawed for use in making table wines in the province and growers would replace them with "preferred" varieties, both French hybrids and Viniferas. These vines, originally brought to the province by Bright's Winery in the 1940s, had gradually increased in vineyard plantings. By the 1970s, they had developed so successfully that they stimulated a re-birth of our entire winemaking, including the development of new boutique wineries like Inniskillin and Chateau des Charmes, who were making wines of much-improved quality and appeal. They would be followed by wave after wave of new wineries, winemakers, and wines. What Is African Art?
A history of the evolving field of African art. This book examines the invention and development of African art as an art historical category. It starts with a simple question: What do we mean when we talk about African art? By confronting the historically shifting answers to this question, Peter Probst identifies "African art" as a conceptual vessel that manifests wider societal transformations. What Is African Art? covers three key stages in the field's history. Starting with the late nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries, the book first discusses the colonial formation of the field by focusing on the role of museums, collectors, and photography in disseminating visual cultures as relations of power. It then explores the remaking of the field at the dawn of African independence with the shift toward contemporary art and the rise of Black Atlantic studies in the 1970s and 1980s. Finally, it examines the post- and decolonial reconfiguration of the field driven by questions of representation, repair, and restitution.
Coloring Time
AHL Foundation and Korean Cultural Service of New York are proud to present some materials from the Archive of Korean-American Artists (AKAA). Korean artists such as Whanki Kim (1913-1974), John Pai (b. 1937), Nam June Paik (1932-2006) and Po Kim (b. 1917) started to settle down in New York in the 1960s while a large number of artists arrived here to study at various MFA programs in the 1980s. Byron Kim, Y. David Chung, Ik-joong Kang, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and many talented young Korean-American artists lived and worked in New York in the 1980s. This exhibition catalogue presents a group of the first generations who set up their studios in the greater New York area in the 1960s to the 1980s. This exhibition catalogue of Coloring Time includes scholarly essays along with documents, photographs, drawings, and sketches of Korean-American artists as well as their early works classified into five themes in order to show a creative journey of Korean contemporary art transplanted in the US.

New houses, a General Store, a Cotton Gin, a Mule Trading Barn, a Methodist Church and more were built from the proceeds of that little mine. These were the central structures of my childhood (...) My life has been blessed. I hope you enjoy these stories of my childhood and youth. Many of my generation will see themselves in these vignettes. Others will become acquainted with an alien and ancient world. Laugh with me, or at me. I don't care which. But please laugh. The Lord knows we have done enough crying. Reflect on your journey. Poem of Stone and Bone: The Iconography of James W. Washington Jr. in Fourteen Stanzas and Thirty-One Days documents four site-specific installations Carletta Carrington Wilson created in 2011 on the Seattle property of noted African American sculptor James W. Washington Jr. The book evolved out of Wilson's time as an artist-in-residence at the Dr. James and Janie Washington Studio and Cultural Center in the Central District of Seattle, Washington. This house, located at 1816 26th Avenue, honors the life and legacy of Washington, a celebrated African American painter and sculptor and a leading member of the Northwest School of artists. He and his wife, Janie R. Washington, lived there from 1945 to 2000 (they both died in 2000). We read of her discovery of the landscape around the house, the garden, the stones, the wood, the still unfinished stone sculptures, and, in the house itself, the slave chains, the slave galleon, and so much more. The books in the library, together with the stones in the garden and her installations in the house, created an intensely spiritual experience for those of us fortunate enough to have joined her there for the public exhibition. The installation included bones, as well as shoe soles, eggshells, photographs of Washington working, and quotes from some of his interviews.

Amber in the Circum-Adriatic Bronze Age
The present book takes up the long-debated subject of the presence of amber around the Adriatic during the Bronze Age (2nd millennium BC). It offers an exhaustive review of the current state of knowledge about the use of amber by prehistoric communities living on the opposite sides of the sea. The author focuses primarily on the spatial and chronological aspects of amber's acquisition in Italy and the Balkans, form and function of the artefacts made of it, issues connected to their processing and ways of circulation of these products within the study area. Furthermore, attention is paid to material and symbolic statuses of amber among the local societies. Finally, the role of the circum-Adriatic zone in the long-range transfer of amber from Northern to Southern Europe is assessed.
