Praise Songs for Dave the Potter
David Drake is recognized as one of the United States' most accomplished nineteenth-century potters. Yet, though his pots--many inscribed with original verse--sit in museums across the nation, he is too often passed over when considering the early foundations of African American poetry. Born in South Carolina at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Drake produced hundreds of pieces while under the surveillance of the enslavers who claimed him and his work as their property. Still, asserts P. Gabrielle Foreman, he is perhaps the only Black person in all of the free or slave states whose literary work was preserved in neither books nor pamphlets nor newspapers. His pots and jars served as pages as well as ceramic vessels. This book examines how Drake's pottery and poetry have inspired visual artists and poets who claim him as an artistic ancestor. It features the Sir Dave (1998) series by artist Jonathan Green, including thirteen paintings that have never been exhibited or published together before. Accompanying and in dialogue with Green's paintings is a twenty-poem cycle called All My Relation (2015) by Glenis Redmond. Praise Songs includes the editor's interview of Redmond and Green and essays by Redmond, Foreman, and Lynnette Young Overby, the artistic director of a 2014 collaboration and performance featuring both Green's and Redmond's work. As one of the first volumes to focus on David Drake's legacy as a writer, it also includes an updated compilation of all of his poetic inscriptions. This volume presents the artistic legacy of one of the most well-known Black potters, and one of the most innovative and underappreciated enslaved poets, of the nineteenth century.

Becoming an Artwork
Modern history is a history of aesthetizations - and every aesthetization raises a claim of protection. We aestheticize and want to protect almost everything, including Earth, oceans, the atmosphere, rare animal species and exotic plants. Humans are no exception. They also present themselves as objects of contemplation that deserve admiration and care. For some time, artists and intellectuals struggled for the sovereign right to present themselves to society in their own way - to become self-created works of art. Today everybody has not only a right but also an obligation to practice self-design. We are responsible for the way we present ourselves to others - and we cannot get rid of this aesthetic responsibility. However, we are not able to produce our own bodies. Before we begin to practice self-design, we find ourselves already designed by the gaze of others. That is why the practice of self-design mostly takes a critical and confrontational turn. We want to bring others to see us in the way we want to be seen - not only during our earthly life but also after our death. This is a complicated struggle, and the aim of this book is to describe and analyze it.

The Ottoman Renaissance and the Early Modern World, 1400-1699
The essays focus on the global nature of the Renaissance. The research demonstrates the shared heritage of the early modern Mediterranean civilisations, especially between Italy and the Ottoman Empire. This book complements my doctoral work, The Ottoman Renaissance: A Reconsideration of Early Modern Ottoman Art 1413-1575 and further the many renaissances argument put forward. The collection of essays addresses the Renaissance narrative from the perspective of the Ottomans and integrates the achievements of the Early Modern World through culturally inclusive framework. To insist on an exclusively Florentine, Italian, or European rinascita or cultural rebirth would fail to appreciate the cultural interconnectedness of the early modern period. In contrast, by recognising Ottoman arts as part of a larger Renaissance narrative the essays celebrate the globalisation that took place and presents a more objective version of the historical and cultural contexts of the sixteenth-century Mediterranean world. The anthology of essays hopes to inspire future scholarship to recognise the significance of seemingly peripheral cultures in established narratives. By reorienting the purview, a greater understanding of the value of less dominant centres can be achieved, ultimately broadening our understanding of human history.

William Rimmer
William Rimmer (1816-1879) is arguably the first modernist American sculptor, although his inventive originality has not been fully acknowledged. Rimmer cultivated an art of ideas and personal expression whilst supporting himself as a physician and, later, as a teacher of art anatomy at the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York. Unlike his contemporaries, he advocated the creation of sculpture drawn entirely from the artist's imagination, as opposed to antique archetypes or live models. In this way, he sought to reframe excellence in American art as something that must be found within, rather than derived from Europe. In this new monograph, the meaning of Rimmer's works is for the first time considered from a combination of perspectives, such as close visual analysis (including X-ray and infrared), historical documentation, and social context. These are enriched with discussion of the artist's own bipolar disorder, deeply-held spiritualism, and views on gender equality-considering women just as talented as men, he used naked male models in all-female classes long before his contemporaries, and produced an allegorical sculpture of fighting lions that criticized the tyranny of men over women.This book will be of great interest to academics, students, art museums, collectors, dealers, art historians, and members of the public with an affinity for Rimmer's work. It will also appeal to those with a broader interest in American culture.

Grounded in perspectives of affect theory, Other Americans examines the writings of Roberto Bola簽o and Daniel Alarc籀n; films by Alfonso Cuar籀n, Claudia Llosa, Matt Piedmont, and Joel and Ethan Coen; as well as the Netflix serials Narcos and El marginal. These widely consumed works about Latin America--equally balanced between narratives produced in the United States and in the region itself--are laden with fear, anxiety, and shame, which has an impact that exceeds the experience of reception. The negative feelings encoded in visions of Latin America become common coinage for US audiences, shaping their ideological relationship with the region and performing an affective interpellation.
