Language, Thought, Art and Existence
This is a multidisciplinary collection comprising 21 critical and personal essays and several artworks and photos that centre around the topics of language, thought (philosophies), art and existence. Seventeen essays appeared in the previous edition of this book, and I have added four new later essays. Instead of academic only essays that one would expect with this title, this collection continues with my ideology of presenting non-fiction in a creative, fresh, easy to read, simple language, with most essays driven by personal stories, thus making it accessible to a wide spectrum of readers from the scholarly to journalistic to general readers.Tendai Rinos Mwanaka is a Zimbabwean publisher, editor, mentor, thinker, literary artist, visual artist and musical artist with 23 individual books and 25 edited books, one music album and several songs, and dozens of paintings and artworks curated, published, produced, exhibited and published in at least 35 countries worldwide.
From Bayreuth to Burkina Faso
Opera Village, a participatory art experiment by the late German multimedia artist Christoph Schlingensief, serves as a testing ground for a critical interrogation of Richard Wagner's notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk. Sarah Hegenbart traces the path from Wagner's introduction of the Gesamtkunstwerk in Bayreuth to Schlingensief's attempt to charge the idea of the total artwork with new meaning by transposing it to the West African country Burkina Faso. Schlingensief developed Opera Village in collaboration with the world-renowned architect Francis K矇r矇. This final project of Schlingensief is inspired by and illuminates the diverse themes that informed his artistic practice, including coming to terms with the German past, anti-Semitism, critical race theory, and questions of postcolonial (self-)criticism.From Bayreuth to Burkina Faso introduces the notion of the postcolonial Gesamtkunstwerk to disrupt the Eurocentric perspective on art history, exploring how the socio-political force of a postcolonial Gesamtkunstwerk could affect processes of transcultural identity construction. It reveals how Schlingensief translocated the Wagnerian concept to Burkina Faso to address German colonial history and engage with it from the perspective of multidirectional memory cultures.
Folklore and Symbolism of Flowers, Plants and Trees
Folklore and Symbolism of Flowers, Plants & Trees by Ernst & Johanna Lehner explores the cultural significance and legends surrounding much of the natural world. Ernst Lehner (b. 1896, d. 1971) and wife Johanna were Austrian natives who emigrated to the United States in 1940, likely fleeing the Nazis. After settling in New York City, the couple embarked on a literary and illustrative pursuit, writing numerous books together that examined the world of symbolism and legend. These works include Astrology and Astronomy (1964), A Fantastic Bestiary: Beasts and Monsters in Myth and Folklore (1969), Devils, Demons and Witchcraft: 244 Illustrations for Artists and Craftspeople (1971), and Folklore and Odysseys of Food and Medicinal Plants (1973).Folklore and Symbolism of Flowers, Plants & Trees (1960) turns this interest in iconography and mythology to the mysteries of growing things. "Throughout human history," they write in the introduction, "flowers, plants and trees became so interwoven with man's daily life that they developed into symbols for his expressions and sentiments, his passions and affectations, his beliefs and religions, his fears and superstitions."Broken into five sections, this fully-illustrated work explains the meaning behind real plants and flowers, as well as those that are now considered legend.Beginning with Sacred Plants, the Lehners describe the legends surrounding real plants, such as the acacia used to build the Arc of the Covenant, and the bo tree, under which the Buddha sat until reaching Nirvana. Other trees are strictly representative, such as the Tree of Life which is seen in nearly all cultures and religions. In Flower Lore and Legend, stories from Greek and Roman mythology and European cultures attempt to make sense of the seasonality of flowers, their healing properties, where certain species grow, and how they inspired the greater world-all in an attempt to "explain the unexplainable."The acanthus, for example, is said to be the inspiration for the famous Corinthian column. The Greek legend says that a young girl of Corinth fell ill and died. Her nurse collected her ornaments and trinkets in a basket and placed the basket on the tomb above the roots of an acanthus plant. She placed a flat tile on top to prevent rain from getting in. When the acanthus sent forth its stalks and leaves in spring, they spread over the basket and bent back down beneath the tile. A sculptor and architect passed by and was so pleased with its appearance that he recreated it in a column capital, which became the ornate Corinthian column. In Strange and Wondrous Plants, we learn the stories of many fantastic plants and the sometimes miraculous wonders they're capable of. In reality, many of these stories were total fabrications or vast exaggerations of the truth. The roots of the carlina thistle, for example, were said to give a man "the strength and sexual potency of a stallion," which has no basis in fact. The annual plant cycle is the subject of The Flower Calendar, which reveals which flowers and plants symbolized the months of the year in the European Middle Ages, the 17th century, and the 18th century, as well as in China and Japan. Finally, The Language of Flowers lists the sentiments behind different flower types. In order to bring the right flowers to the right occasion-celebration, courtship, sympathy, gratitude, friendship-one must know what each bloom or plant represents. The white lily, for example, symbolizes both virginity and motherhood, while the snowdrop represents hope and consolation.
Open a Window
Psychotherapy is a science, but many argue that it is also an art-the art of connecting, the art of listening, the art of opening "new windows," the art of creatively seeking new possibilities of being-in-the-world. Using art in psychotherapy is a powerful tool for expressing what is inexpressible. Many therapists not only use art in therapy but are artists themselves. This book is a collaborative effort to bring together the artwork and the writings of 10 therapists. It endeavors to "Open a Window" to the world of therapy.

Jamaican Diaspora
In this edition, we highlight some of our contemporary authors, such as Beverly East, Karl A. Mitchell, Geoffrey Philp, and Patrice DaCosta. Once again Jamaicans are trailblazers. The 1st Black newspaper in the US has a Jamaican connection. John Russwurm was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica in 1799. He along with Samuel Cornish created Freedom's Journal newspaper in 1827. Currently, Marlon James has won the Man Booker prize. Finally, we say goodbye to Anthony Winkler, whose books captured a certain consciousness of Jamaican culture.

Faking It!
Faking It! collects eleven chapters which explore the question of forgery from different disciplinary angles: literary historical and art historical contributions share space with discussions of jewels, architecture and coinage. The various case studies take as their focus developments in Renaissance Italy and early modern England as well as in France, Germany, Malta, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Russia and Australia. While each chapter contributes to a better understanding of the local context of cultural production, together they suggest new answers to how we can understand forgery. The concept of performance allows us to see beyond normative approaches and gain insight into some of the ambiguities concerning the nature of forgery. Contributors to this volume: Brian J. Boeck, Federica Boldrini, Patricia Pires Boulhosa, Laurent Curelly, Helen Hughes, Jacqueline Hylkema, Philip Lavender, Lorenzo Paoli, Ingrid Rowland, Camilla Russo and Ksenija Tschetschik-Hammerl.

Artificial Hells
This searing critique of participatory art--from its development to its political ambitions--is "an essential title for contemporary art history scholars and students as well as anyone who has . . . thought, 'Now that's art!' or 'That's art?'" (Library Journal) Since the 1990s, critics and curators have broadly accepted the notion that participatory art is the ultimate political art: that by encouraging an audience to take part an artist can promote new emancipatory social relations. Around the world, the champions of this form of expression are numerous, ranging from art historians such as Grant Kester, curators such as Nicolas Bourriaud and Nato Thompson, to performance theorists such as Shannon Jackson. Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art, known in the US as "social practice." Claire Bishop follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of a participatory aesthetic. This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada; the Situationist International; Happenings in Eastern Europe, Argentina and Paris; the 1970s Community Arts Movement; and the Artists Placement Group. It concludes with a discussion of long-term educational projects by contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera, Pawel Althamer and Paul Chan. Since her controversial essay in Artforum in 2006, Claire Bishop has been one of the few to challenge the political and aesthetic ambitions of participatory art. In Artificial Hells, she not only scrutinizes the emancipatory claims made for these projects, but also provides an alternative to the ethical (rather than artistic) criteria invited by such artworks. Artificial Hells calls for a less prescriptive approach to art and politics, and for more compelling, troubling, and bolder forms of participatory art and criticism.

The Korean War and Postmemory Generation
This pioneering volume navigates cultural memory of the Korean War through the lens of contemporary arts and film in South Korea.
The Art of the Saracens in Egypt
Brought to perfection in the Middle Ages, Saracenic art possesses an unmistakable style, instantly recognised wherever it occurs, from the Alcazar of Seville to the mosques of Samarkand, and the ruins of Gaur in Bengal. With centres in Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Persia and India, in some respects the Egyptian is the most important, retaining a fuller record over a longer period in a purer style. In this popular but professional work of classic accuracy, a wide range of arts are covered: architecture, mural sculpture and calligraphy, mosaic, wood and ivory carving, metalwork, glassware and pottery, all lavishly illustrated.Stanley Lane-Poole (1854-1931), archaeologist and historian, was for many years keeper of the coin collections at the British Museum, where he compiled a fourteen volume catalogue. In 1883 he conducted an archaeological expedition to Egypt. A prolific writer, he produced classic pieces on Turkey, Spain, the Barbary Corsairs, medieval Egypt, India, and a biography of Saladin.
Experiencing Music and Visual Cultures
Bringing the research of musicologists, art historians, and film studies scholars into dialogue, this book explores the relationships between visual art forms and music.
Frances-Anne Johnston
This bilingual publication is the first-ever monograph on artist Frances-Anne Johnston, one of Canada's foremost painters of still lifes, flowers, and interiors. Exploring the extensive artistic career of this under-represented artist, the book also situates her within 20th-century Canadian art history and feminist theoretical contexts. In addition to beautiful colour illustrations of Johnston's work, this volume features critical essays, and an extensive exhibition history. Through primary research, curator Rebecca Basciano interprets Johnston's mastery of technique and subject matter, while demonstrating the artist's unique aesthetic and skill through an exploration of several important artworks. Similarly, art historian and scholar Catharine Mastin, in her ongoing investigation of Canadian "artist couples," exposes the challenges faced by women artists -- including Johnston -- who often juggled their own artistic practices with the demands of child-rearing and supporting their husbands' careers. Finally, as a critical aspect of this reclamation work, Frances-Anne Johnston's own voice is revealed in a republished article that she wrote in 1955 for Mayfair. Together, these insightful essays constitute a feminist recovery project by not only situating Johnston among her male contemporaries, but also by creating new space for the appreciation and validation of a practice that was shaped by domestic realities, including motherhood. This book is a companion to the exhibition A Family Palette: Frances-Anne Johnston, Franz Johnston, and Franklin Arbuckle, on view at the Ottawa Art Gallery from September 10, 2022 to February 5, 2023, followed by an Ontario tour through 2024. This project has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada, and the Ontario Society of Artists.

The History of the Assyrian Nation in the 20th Century
This book was written by Koorish Yacob Schlemon, who taught and led prayers at the Evangelical Church in Baghdad, Iraq over some parts of the second half of the twentieth century. Koorish Yacoub Shlemon was a soldier, teacher, and author. During WWI, he served as a soldier and officer in the Assyrian battalion in Urmia under Agha Petros. He was among the 50,000 - 70,000 Assyrians who escaped from Urmia after the withdrawal of the Russian Army. He experienced life in Baquba Refugee Camp in Iraq and later settled in Baghdad. After the death of Rev. Khando the dean and administrator of the Assyrian school in Baghdad, Koorish ran the school for many years before immigrating to the US and settling in Chicago. As a person who personally lived the events that the Assyrians went through between the two great wars, Koorish Yacoub Shlemon gives detailed descriptions of the devastating experiences of the Assyrian people and the steps taken by the various Assyrian leaders during that period.

Paper Horses
In 2020 a large album of "paper horses" - prayer prints of Chinese gods - appeared for sale. How had these fragile things, cheaply printed in the 1940s and meant to be ritually burned soon after purchase, survived intact for so long? And how come there were at least three other identical sets in collections around the world? In answering this mystery, author David Leffman explores the history and techniques behind traditional Chinese woodblock printing, which dates back to at least the Tang dynasty (618-907). All 93 "paper horses" in the original album are reproduced alongside biographies of the gods, spirits and demons depicted, providing an illustrated introduction to the complex and fascinating world of Chinese folk religion.
