Dear Rose,
As I write this letter, you have already graduated from Stanford.
I offer you this book as a gift—and as a father’s deepest blessing at the close of this chapter of your journey.
Over the years, every step we have taken together lives vividly in my memory: the light in your eyes the first time you held a golf club, the silhouette of you heading out to practice before dawn, the quiet strength with which you endured defeat, and the composed, resolute smile you carried when you stood as a champion.
The world sees your talent and your victories—the brilliance of each moment under the spotlight.
But what I have witnessed is something far more enduring: how a young girl, through time and trial, became truly herself.
You have learned to stand firm in solitude, to persevere through adversity, to remain grounded in the midst of applause.
And through it all, you have held on to your kindness, your humility, and your sincerity toward the world.
That is what makes me most proud.
These years, it was never just me walking beside you.
Your mother, with her quiet strength, created the foundation that held you steady.
Your brother and his family, with their unwavering care, ensured that no matter how far you traveled, you always had a place to return to.
And your grandmother’s love, constant and enduring, has warmed your path in ways words cannot fully capture.
Together, we have had the privilege of watching you grow—and of being shaped by you in return.
You have taught us to love more deeply, to wait with greater patience, and to face life with a steadier heart.
I carry a deep sense of gratitude.
Gratitude that you chose this path, and gratitude that we, as a family, were given the chance to walk it with you.
To pursue a professional career while completing your education at Stanford—the effort and resilience behind this are beyond what most can see.
And yet, you have once again surpassed yourself.
Still, graduation is not an ending.
It is simply the next tee box in your life.
The road ahead will be long, and not without its challenges.
There may be honors greater than any title, and trials more demanding than any scorecard.
Wherever life takes you, and whatever stage you stand upon, remember this: you may be strong, and you may be bold—but you may also pause, be gentle, and remain free.
You may strive for excellence, and still hold on to inner peace.
Most importantly, never lose yourself.
If one day your story gives someone else the courage to begin again—to step forward onto their own “first tee”—then everything you have lived through will carry a meaning far beyond victory.
And to us—you are already enough.
We are proud of you, not only for all that you have achieved, but for the person you have become.
Go forward.
Become who you wish to be, and embrace the world that awaits you.
Home will always be here.
And so will our love.
With all our love,
Your family

Afterword◆
Rose:

Rose Zhang
◎Epilogue◎
Rose Zhang always remembers the practice range where she first began.
Near her home in Southern California is a huge development area, desert stretching to the horizon. Houses line both sides; the rest is open land. Hitting balls there is technically not allowed, but as she tells it:
“I would hit balls toward the sunset, and Dad would watch. We’d jump into the car, drive through the bushes, pick up every ball we could find. Then we’d do it again.”
When she first hit in the desert, Rose asked Coach George: “When will I win trophies?” That question decided everything for that nine-year-old girl. And now, when she can represent the U.S. at the Paris Olympics—when her hand touches the club, that desert is still there. But results are no longer the only answer. Because:
“Beyond competing, traveling, and interviews… I’m just a slightly weird girl, riding my bike around collecting rocks, petting every dog I see.”
Maybe that is the truest Rose Zhang: dazzling under the spotlight, yet ordinary in private; a historic symbol, yet also a young girl with normal dreams and challenges; a cultural bridge, yet also an individual still searching for her place.
In golf’s long river of history, she has already become part of a bigger story—a story of breakthrough, inheritance, and possibility. For young people inspired by her, that influence may last a lifetime—like the shadows that stretch across the practice range grass at dusk, naturally extending with every swing and every victory.
And in Rose’s 22-year life, the story is only just beginning. She loves golf, still searching for her road. Every morning she wakes up thinking only about how to hit the ball better—just like at nine years old, those evenings when she sent balls into the desert.
If there is a god of golf, perhaps it gifted Rose Zhang with this talent and pure love. And she, through every shot and every hole, passes that gift onward to juniors and newcomers—leading them onto the destined rose road.
