Turning Forty

This work features a symbolic mix of events that seems to border on the absurd and the madness of a man facing the prospect of turning 40 as his life takes unexpected turns. The book is brilliant, not so much because of the protagonist's actions, but because of the symbolism and the emotional and internal rationality it conveys. At 30, in many ways, I identified with the character's way of accepting what life is bringing him as he reaches middle age. At first glance, it may seem like a book about crazy or controversial actions. Still, it is a true critique of following models established by society for years and, at a certain point, finding that all the work has yielded few fruits on the path to happiness. I thought it was excellent. I have recommended it to all my friends, and I can't wait to discuss it and hear their impressions. For the record, I'm almost forty, so this book was already exciting for me. When I first turned thirty, I was a little afraid, but more so because I was getting older. I realized that I should be excited about it. I'm more established and more comfortable in my skin. So, I knew reading this book was going to be along those lines. Mitch Rubman reflects on the past forty years of his life. The mistakes, the accomplishments, but really, the endeavors and the living to the fullest. Rubman proves that turning forty is really the time to acknowledge where you are in life and to truly find out what the rest of your life is going to look like. We have humor, vulnerability, awareness, and acceptance. I'm excited, and you should be, too! Sometimes we see forty as a milestone that feels frightening, when it can actually be a very interesting stage of life. I liked how this book conveys the idea that getting older is not something to be ashamed of but can bring greater clarity about what truly matters. The light, humorous way the passage of time is presented helped me feel calmer about my own changes. It also left me with the feeling that we do not have to have everything solved at a certain age. Many times, we put too much pressure on ourselves to meet expectations that are not always our own. This book reminded me that growing is natural and that each stage has its own value. When I finished it, I felt calm and grateful for everything I have lived. Turning Forty is an honest book that encourages us to reflect on how to transition into a stage of life that, for some, can be full of challenges. In this work, the author narrates with humor and a touch of vulnerability the personal, emotional, and professional changes that accompany this life process, inviting us to accept it as an opportunity to grow and mature. In my opinion, it is an inspiring book that clarifies our doubts and fears, encourages us to value what we have learned, and helps us project ourselves toward a more conscious future. I highly recommend this book to those who wish to reinvent themselves with motivation and maturity. The writing was good. The style is consistent, and the main character -- a man approaching his fortieth birthday -- is consistent. With that said, there is perishingly little in the way of a plot. It is a dull account of a dull little man who is trying to make his life exciting. (It isn't, and he doesn't.) He has the emotional focus of a fruit fly and the depth of a grocery store tortilla. The writing quality gets this book four stars. If you liked "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", you'll probably like this one. It is written in that general style, perhaps with a nod toward "The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". It is a masculine version of Weetzy Bat -- only all grown up and jolly well should know better.
