Cinematic Psychotherapy

Routledge 出版
2023/12/03 出版

This book investigates the therapeutic potential and efficacy of audiovisual languages, deepening the integration of film studies into neuropsychiatry and strategic psychotherapy.Within a theoretical framework including documentary studies, self-representational and amateur theories, and strategic psychotherapy, the book describes the key notions and methodologies for using audiovisual language in clinical therapy practice and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) interventions. The book, a review and update of the Italian Cinema terapeutico: Linguaggi audiovisivi e percorsi clinici, showcases the healing potential of creative participatory processes and self-representations that occur thanks to the relocation and amateurization of the contemporary cinematic experience. The authors propose an experimental therapeutic protocol, Video-Pharmakon, which aims to serve as a new integrated method for taking care of children and adolescents with ASD and their families. The protocol is illustrated in its methodologies and phases and supported through case studies.Scholars and practitioners of art therapy and narrative-based medical approaches, professionals working with clients with ASD, and any other student or professional interested in ASD, psychotherapy, and film studies will find this a valuable resource for current practice and future research interventions.

Integrative Perinatal Counselling

Mou,Sultana  著
Routledge 出版
2023/12/01 出版

This book presents "the Becoming Model", an integrative perinatal counselling model that provides a practical clinical framework to therapists working with those for whom the question of becoming a parent seems central.Becoming a parent changes your identity, household, worldviews, relationships, priorities and previous life goals. Based on the notion that one does not become a mother or a father overnight, rather that it is a process of "becoming", this model provides a roadmap for therapists (psychoanalytic, behavioural, humanistic, integrative and others) looking to understand and explore their client's experience of this transitional journey through talk-therapy. It defines the unique field of perinatal counselling, highlights major clinical considerations, presents clinical observations by drawing from real-life cases and provides the therapist with one-stop-information guides on each theme (ten) and sub-theme (40) by drawing from existing research i.e. evidence-based practice.Arguably one of the few counselling models specific to the perinatal period, this user-friendly guide, which is applicable to any modality, is designed to support psychotherapists, counsellors, nurses, midwives, and other mental health professionals working therapeutically with those who are going through the pre- or peri-natal period, or those who have experienced perinatal loss.

Preparing Culturally Efficacious Bilingual Counselors through Theory and Case Studies

Ingram 出版
2023/12/01 出版

Our passion and pride to serve our community instilled a desire to provide adequate preparation of biculturalbilingual counselors. Five Spanish-speaking Latina scholars, with professional experience as bilingual counselors, recognized the multitude of challenges encountered when providing services in Spanish without any formal training. As you read this text, know that this book was created by bilingual counselors, and for bilingual counselors, to raise our collective voice. Throughout our first conversations we realized a significant problem in the field: the overall assumption that in order for bilingual counselors to be culturally and linguistically efficacious, they simply have to speak the language or identify as part of the Latine community. Our ground-breaking book attends to the need of providing adequate knowledge and resources to prepare culturally efficacious bilingual counselors. Given that our focus is to ensure access to materials in Spanish that address Latine mental health issues, another unique feature of our book is that it provides a variety of translations, resources, and case studies in both English and Spanish. Special emphasis was also given to bilingual supervision needs and included in a chapter with resources and appropriate translations. We hope that this critical work provides the profession a resource in which theory and practice intersect for our work with the Latine community.

Investigating School Psychology

Routledge 出版
2023/11/30 出版

Investigating School Psychology provides a fascinating exploration of the field of school psychology through the lens of pseudoscience and fringe science. Contributions from leaders in the fields of school psychology, clinical psychology, and education honor the role of science in the field while also exploring and guarding against the harms that pseudoscience can cause.School psychology and, more broadly, the field of education are particularly susceptible to pseudoscience, fads, and maintaining the status quo by resisting the adoption of new ideas. Using an exhaustive review of the current literature, this book discusses various concepts in school psychology that have been largely discredited and many practices that continue to exist with little to no scientific support. Each chapter helps differentiate between dubious and evidence-based approaches while providing a useful resource for practicing school psychologists and educators to distinguish between science and pseudoscience in their everyday work with children. The book's discussion of the harmful nature of pseudoscience in school psychology is inclusive of all students, such as students with disabilities, those diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders, those with academic problems, and all other children in schools.Investigating School Psychology is valuable supplemental reading in undergraduate and graduate courses in education and school psychology and is also a beneficial reference for practicing school psychologists to distinguish between science and pseudoscience in their practice.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy

Routledge 出版
2023/11/27 出版

Writing to the practicing clinician, this book offers a step-by-step practical guide to Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT) when working with individuals, couples, and families. Most therapists know sociocultural systems influence their clients' lives, but few know how to connect the dots between what happens in the wider society, interpersonal neurobiology, relational processes, and client well-being. Written by a founder of SERT, Carmen Knudson-Martin draws on knowledge from multiple disciplines to innovatively weave together a practical step-by-step guide that demystifies the connections between micro and macro processes and relational/self-development.Divided into four parts, chapters cover how to conceptualize clinical issues through a socio-emotional lens, the therapist's role in assessment, goal-setting, clinical decision-making, the "how-to" of each of the three phases of the SERT clinical sequence, and self-of-the-therapist work and clinical research that inform the model. The clear writing style and detailed examples make complex social processes accessible, demonstrating how good practice is--and must be--equitable and socially responsible. This practical guide is essential reading for all mental health professionals, such as seasoned family therapists, counselors, psychologists, social workers, and students in training in these fields.

Relearning Therapy

Ingram 出版
2023/11/22 出版

Relearning Therapy is for therapists who want to improve their understanding of emotional problems and their therapeutic practice, and for people who want to understand where their therapeutic problem came from and how it can be resolved. The book comprehensively explains how emotional or psychological problems are created, and how they can be permanently resolved by identifying their biographical origins and relearning the experience. In response to a diffifficult circumstance, a person modifies her behaviour to minimize the impact on her personal dignity. For example, a person learns that by keeping her head down she is less likely to receive criticism from herstep father. In the future, to protect herself from criticism, she keeps her head down, just as she learned to do as a teenager. The learned behaviour, motivated by feelings from the past (not thoughts), becomes a therapeutic problem when it interferes with the person's pursuit of a desired goal.Relearning Experience Process uses the feelings motivating the problem behaviour to identify the past experience underlying the problem. The past experience is relearned, neutralizing the problematic feeling and resolving the problem behaviour. The book explores and provides an answer to the following questions: - How should the unconscious be understood?- What is the relationship and interaction between conscious and unconscious?- What is emotion, and is there a distinction between emotions and feelings?- What motivates behaviour?- What are, or should be, the aims of therapy?- What therapies are the most successful, and what makes them successful?- Why do psychological problems develop in a person: how and why are they created?- Why do they take the forms that they do in terms of feelings and behaviour?- What kinds of experiences lead to emotional problems; and what differentiates these experiences from experiences that don't lead to emotional problems?- Is it possible to find the origins of psychological problems in the biography of an individual?- Why do problems manifest at the time when they do, sometimes years or even decades following the experiences underlying them?- What actually is a psychological problem; how should psychological problems be defined or described?- What differentiates less successful from more successful psychological interventions?- Can psychological or emotional problems be fully and finally resolved; or do people have to learn to live with them, as we are often led to believe?- Is it possible to develop a comprehensive understanding of the nature of psychological problems, and a coherent theory of how and why they develop and how to treat them?

Family-Focused Treatment for Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Paul,Sunseri  著
Routledge 出版
2023/11/22 出版

This book is designed as a treatment manual for using family-based treatments with children struggling with mental illness, supporting both family therapists and the families they are helping.Based on over 40 years of research, it has been shown that involving the entire family in treatment is effective. However, family therapy is still not used as a first line of treatment. Paul Sunseri explains and explores why family-based approaches should be used with struggling young people and how this can be applied in practice. Chapters discuss the causes, contributors, and social determinants for the rise in childhood mental illness and provide empirical evidence and treatments for working with children and adolescents suffering from self-harm, suicidal ideation, anxiety, anger, and depression. Filled with case studies throughout, the book also touches on mitigating the effects of screen time in our increasingly technological lives and interventions to help reluctant children participate in therapy. This book will be invaluable reading for graduate-level students, clinicians in training, and fully licensed clinicians, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, and clinical social workers. The book is also a practical resource for parents and other caregivers; it pulls back the curtain on therapy and teaches parents exactly what to do to best love and support their child at a time when they need it the most.

Adolescent Configuration Styles, Parenting and Psychotherapy

Routledge 出版
2023/11/16 出版

Mental health has become the principal concern as adolescents struggle with a host of issues such as anxiety, academic pressures, gender, substances, social media, complicated family compositions and a vulnerable planet. This book provides psychotherapists with a clear theoretical understanding and practical application for navigating the increasingly complex adolescent experience as young people adjust and respond to the present- day world.Starrs presents a contemporary understanding of adolescence, identifying three principal character styles and offering experience- near descriptions of the modernday adolescent. The author demonstrates how each configuration style in adolescence elicits a predictable response in parents and examines the challenges and dilemmas facing parents in today's world, highlighting the patterns and pitfalls which often render parental interventions ineffective. Developmentally attuned parenting strategies are outlined, pertaining to each configuration style. The in depth analysis of adolescent process and parental response has implications for the therapeutic encounter. Intervention focuses both on one- to- one work with the adolescent and parental involvement. The complexity of working with adolescents and parents who demonstrate psychological entrenchment is also outlined. This highly readable, original and exceptional contribution is suitable for psychotherapists, allied professionals and parents alike.

Family in Islamic Psychology Perspective: Challenges and Solutions

Ingram 出版
2023/11/08 出版

The present book was published with the desire to summarize the recent works about studies on psychology and family, particularly on how to strengthen families and overcome possible challenges that could come in the way. It also represents an interesting dialogue of two worlds. It is, on one hand, the world of psychology in the Islamic context also called Islamic psychology and, on the other hand, the findings and research methodology of Western psychology. Both worlds can learn from each other which is the basic idea of the Biocentric Sciences, where perspectives are integrated. The contributions in this volume were presented by scientists who met at an International Conference on Family and Islamic Values held in Indonesia in 2019.

The Wounds of Our Mother Psychoanalysis - New Models for Psychoanalysis in Crisis

Paolo,Azzone  著
Ingram 出版
2023/11/07 出版

Psychoanalysis is facing a severe crisis. Contemporary epistemology relies on an extreme materialistic reductionism and human sciences seem eager to conform as much as possible to the models and procedures of hardcore science and somatic medicine. Western society is currently harboring a deep mistrust for a discipline that fully incorporates the flesh and blood of interpersonal emotions. The standing of psychoanalysis as a basic dimension of human culture is threatened more than ever and psychoanalysis is badly in need of new strategies and new models. Unluckily, and - I must add - quite dismayingly, psychoanalytic institutions have generally appeared shy, even helpless in front of such an impressive army of critics and opponents. Nowadays, psychoanalysis appears weak. We may even qualify it as wounded. The development of the interpersonal model and of the Kleinian school in the second half of the last century has set the stage for the emergence of an original conceptualization of the unconscious mind. Within the intersubjective paradigm, the psychoanalytic situation is conceptualized as an interpersonal field to which both the analyst and the patient substantially contribute. We believe that the failure to fully integrate such an intersubjective dimension in both psychoanalytic theory and practice amounts to a core liability in 21st-century psychoanalysis. This book gathers several contributions discussing the contemporary crises of psychoanalysis and offering new perspectives. Some contributors lament that the prevailing psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice have been unable to stay true to the fundamentals of the discipline. Other chapters explore the intersections between psychoanalysis and neural sciences. Finally, the last section demonstrates how psychoanalysis can still be fruitfully applied to the understanding of contemporary culture and society, including basic issues such as identity politics and climate change.

Counseling Theories and Case Conceptualization

2023/11/04 出版

One of the aspects of this textbook that I most appreciate is that Dr. Flynn embraces action as a scholar by integrating the most relevant and impactful theoretical practices, tackling developing trends such as telebehavioral health, and challenging us, as readers, to apply complex theoretical constructs from an intersectional, culturally responsive, and social justice paradigm. This is not a reimagining of the traditional counseling theories textbooks from 10 years ago but rather an act of evolution and engagement captured in the immediate assertion of social justice-oriented theories. Nicole R. Hill Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Professor, Counselor Education Shippensburg University Helps future counselors apply key theoretical constructs to real-world scenarios through session transcripts and detailed case conceptualizations For students enrolled in master's and advanced doctoral programs, this groundbreaking textbook blends theoretical insight and practical application. Woven throughout is a focus on the multiple levels of diversity, intersectionality, and identity that individuals embody and the skills and interventions necessary to produce positive outcomes. The book is distinguished by the inclusion of Voices from the Field, digital video interviews with 12 expert practitioners of leading theories. These practitioners, representing different contextual backgrounds and intersectional identities, share their perspectives and experiences on how to best use a particular theory to help marginalized communities who have experienced discrimination. All theory-based chapters provide readers with case conceptualizations, session transcripts, and videos of Voices from the Field. Additionally, all chapters include learning objectives, chapter summaries, and student activities. Within each chapter, students will learn theory-aligned assessment instruments that resonate with clients' needs and acquire proficiency in an eclectic array of techniques derived from both classic and contemporary counseling theories. The book innovatively applies techniques and skills to pressing issues, such as racism, discrimination, and inequity, through adept application of theory to empower healing and transformation. Instructors will also have access to a full suite of ancillaries, including an Instructor Manual, Test Bank, and chapter PowerPoints. Purchase includes online access via most mobile devices or computers. Key Features: Mapped to the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) 2016 and 2024 standards Examines nuances of 36 counseling theories, new and emerging counseling theories, and describes 24 theoretically congruent assessment instruments Includes 12 digitally recorded Voices from the Field interviews that showcase first-person accounts from diverse clinicians working with marginalized communities, people of color, LGBTQIA+ clientele, and other underrepresented populations Contains detailed information about the profession's unique theoretical history, leaders, legacies, waves of philosophical and political change, and practice-based skills Incorporates information needed to fully understand how counseling theories make meaning of mental health issues, human development, and client and counselor therapeutic roles Chapters include an examination of the findings of contemporary theory-based research Demonstrates the use of theoretical and atheoretical case conceptualization and skills using the same reoccurring case Provides session transcripts for each theoretical chapter demonstrating in-depth examples of theory-based skills

Applied Narrative Psychology

Nigel,Hunt  著
Ingram 出版

Narratives are grounded in everyday life, from our conversations to films to books. We all create and tell stories, and we listen to other people's stories. Using narrative approaches is both meaningful to people and clinically effective. This book provides a broad-ranging introduction to narrative psychology and applies narrative to professional contexts to help people develop efficient techniques to use in practical situations, including clinical and occupational psychology. It offers a rationale for the use of narrative approaches, translating core research into accessible techniques, and illustrates these approaches with practical examples across a range of areas. In turn, it details how practitioners can help people change or develop their narratives to enable them to live their lives more effectively.

Social Work Practice with Fathers

Springer 出版
2023/11/01 出版

Social workers need to work with fathers across many service systems, but lack guidance on how to do so, and most engagement, assessment, and intervention work for family-serving systems is mother- and child-focused. Father-inclusive readings and resources are also limited. Drawing on the expertise of well-regarded research and practice experts in the field, this comprehensive book provides guidance to social work practitioners and researchers on how to engage, assess, and serve fathers. Instructors can use the text to include fathers in courses on the human behavior and social environment, family systems, clinical practice, diversity, or service systems.Social service systems, unfortunately, have often struggled to positively engage men as parents. Recent demographic trends indicate that fathers are providing more direct care to children and single-father households are one of the most rapidly growing demographic groups in the United States. Barriers to their successful engagement include biases and assumptions about men and fathers, a lack of father-friendly policies and practices in the field, limited training on how to work with fathers, and relatively limited father-inclusive social work research until recently. This book addresses these barriers. It is a guide to social workers in their efforts to better serve men as parents, and does so from an ecological and systems perspective. Clinical Behavior Analysis for Children

Springer 出版
2023/10/25 出版

This book is a guide for child psychotherapists interested in applying clinical behavioral analysis to their work and for clinical behavior analysts working with children. In the literature of behavior analysis, a considerable number of publications present clinical strategies to more effectively conduct therapeutic interventions with adults and adolescents, but there is still a lack of publications that address practical aspects of the work of the child behavior analytic therapist. This volume aims do fill this void by bringing together chapters written by therapists who share their views on theoretical and practical aspects of child care and describe the stages and challenges of the psychotherapy process with clients of up to 12 years of age. Chapters in this volume provide an overview of the specific knowledge and techniques clinical behavior analysts need to master to work with children, such as theories of child development from the perspective of behavior analysis; biological influences on the development of child behavior; clinical assessment and definition of therapeutic goals in the work with children; how to include functional play in clinical settings; and how to involve parents and the school in the therapeutic process. Additionally, specific chapters focus on the application of third wave behavioral therapies, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, to the clinical work with children. Clinical Behavior Analysis for Children will be a valuable resource for psychotherapists and clinical psychology students looking for a guide to understand the specificities of clinical behavior analysis applied to child psychotherapy.

EMDR Therapy Treatment for Grief and Mourning

2023/10/25 出版

The loss of a loved one can be very painful, with the mourner losing an important source of safety, connection, and life balance. Even when uncomplicated, bereavement can have a significant impact on the mourner. Traumatic circumstances can intensify the grief and complicate the mourning process. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, an evidenced based treatment for trauma, can help process the trauma of the loss and the obstacles that interfere with the grief and mourning process. In this book, Roger M. Solomon guides the EDMR therapist through the treatment process by understanding grief reactions and the mourning process, providing an overall model of EMDR treatment for grief and mourning, and highlighting how EMDR can help a mourner experience a positive sense of connection through heartfelt, meaningful memories. The author presents an integrative model for EMDR therapy treatment based on the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP), which guides EMDR therapy. Several models of grief and mourning that inform EMDR treatment and a discussion of the eight phases and three prongs (past, present, and future) of EMDR therapy are presented, with many case examples including transcripts of sessions, to illustrate treatment principles and clinical teaching points.

New Horizons in Systemic Practice with Children and Families

Palgrave M 出版
2023/10/14 出版

This open access book illustrates how systemic theory, as both a meta-theory and a relational organic theory, can be a suitable framework for understanding and appreciating the new horizons of systemic practice with children and families in their various contexts. The different chapters shed light on how systemic perspectives, as they are presented in their varying contexts, promote hope by giving room for reflections on uncertainty, change, opportunities, interconnections, and differences. The authors describe and reflect on how systemic approaches can be useful for practitioners and make space for a multiplicity of different perspectives that address the needs of children and those assisting them in their various settings, where children grow and develop in the context of their unique needs and challenges. It covers safeguarding children's rights through parental separation and divorce; families experiencing anticipatory grief; parents struggling with substanceuse problems; gender incongruence; eating disorders; systemic perspectives on psychiatric diagnosis; children with disabilities; and systemic practice in school. The book will be a source of inspiration, as the purpose is to illustrate the systemic field in constant motion, which encourages, maybe even requires a plurality of theories, perspectives and approaches. But, most importantly, it demonstrates how working with children and families is a privilege.

You were just a child... looking for love

Ingram 出版
2023/10/14 出版

This book is primarily about love; love as the basic force of life; love that is lost or never born in the relationship between mother and infant; love that is the underlying need of the child; love that is delusionary, holding us in endless hope; and love that is honest and true, based on reality, and then possible in our relationship with ourselves, and those we truly love. Love is the turning point from trauma to health. This is a varied collection of thoughts and ideas, some full-length essays, and some short statements, all of which have IoPT (Identity-oriented Psychotrauma Therapy) thinking underlying them.Becoming 'IoPT-Informed' does indeed take us on a journey where everything in the world can be considered through the lens of IoPT thinking. IoPT then becomes not just a theory and a therapeutic method, but a psychology and a philosophy that can inform and explain what happens in our own personal world, and in the wider political and social world. All of the major topics we are collectively struggling with every single day, and those personal musings about our own life... all can be considered from an IoPT perspective. This is a book above all to be enjoyed, and from which perhaps to learn something more about who we really are, individually and collectively.

Understanding Suicide in the United States

Ingram 出版
2023/10/12 出版

By integrating sociological, psychological, and biological perspectives, this book aims to demystify and destigmatize a challenging and taboo topic - suicide. It weaves current theories and statistics on suicide into a larger message of how suicide can affect almost anyone, and how urgent prevention needs are. Written in an accessible manner, it assumes no pre-existing knowledge of suicide. The broad nontechnical overview will appeal to general readers and a wide range of disciplines, including politics and policy, biology, psychology, sociology, and psychiatry. It concludes on a positive note, focused on recovery, resilience, and hope. It considers not only how these factors may play a role in suicide prevention, but how, despite persistent suicide rates, we can proceed optimistically and take concrete action to support loved ones or promote suicide prevention efforts.
