Interviewing and Diagnostic Exercises for Clinical and Counseling Skills Building

Routledge 出版
2024/02/29 出版

This text is specifically designed to meet the needs of those teaching and learning interviewing and diagnostic skills in clinical, counselling, and school psychology, counselor education, licensed clinical social workers, and other programs preparing mental health professionals. It offers a rich array of practical, hands-on, class- and workshop-tested role-playing and didactic exercises. The profiles included throughout provide students/trainees with a wealth of information about each client's feelings, thoughts, actions, and relationship patterns on which to draw as they proceed through the different phases of the initial interview, one playing the client and one the interviewer. Each client profile is followed by exercises thathighlight attending, asking open and closed questions, engaging in reflective listening, responding to nonverbal behavior, making empathetic comments, summarizing, redirecting, supportively confronting, and commenting on process. This second edition is based on the new diagnostic system (DSM-5-TR) and all profiles and case examples are updated. Throughout, the author emphasizes the importance of understanding diversity and respecting the client's perceptions, and of reflecting on the ways in which the interviewer's own identity influences both the process of interviewing and that of diagnosis. This text is essential for both students and practitioners of clinical psychology, counselling, psychiatry, nursing, social work, and other allied professions.

The Heart of the Gospel

2024/02/26 出版

An age-old approach has quietly been addressing the issues confronting the human condition. An approach that in our science-driven world we have almost forgotten, the heart of the Gospel message. It can no longer be ignored. Our mental and emotional health and well being are being constantly challenged and even under threat, accelerated by the rapid changes to our daily lives brought on by the recent 2020 global pandemic. Times are uncertain. The future is no longer as clear. Therapy has gained rapid traction, promoted as the best evidence-based alternative to medication for addressing the increasing mood and anxiety disorders we are experiencing. While therapeutic approaches have merits in helping to modify or adapt our ways of thinking and behaving, therapy alone cannot fully address the root issues that affect us all. The purpose of this book is two-fold. The first is to explain why therapeutic approaches tend to fall short of effecting lasting change. The second is an attempt to share fresh insights into why the Gospel message is more relevant to us today, the only true therapy for the human soul.

Applying Decision Research to Improve Clinical Outcomes, Psychological Assessment, and Clinical Prediction

David,Faust  著
2024/02/23 出版

Mental health professionals often make explicit or implicit predictions involving crucial matters--Is a client at risk for self-harm or harming others? What treatment approach is most likely to be successful? Has a child been subjected to sexual or physical abuse? Decision research has particularly strong applied use for improving the accuracy of such determinations; unfortunately this work has not been broadly disseminated in the mental health field. Applying Decision Research to Improve Clinical Outcomes, Psychological Assessment, and Clinical Prediction introduces graduate students and practitioners in the mental health field to research, knowledge, and practical strategies that can enhance diagnostic and predictive accuracy and thereby improve client care. Major chapters of the book address well-established, but often under-recognized, principles and procedures for improving the integration of clinical data and interpretive accuracy; the differentiation between seemingly accurate but illusory, as opposed to genuine, associations between signs, symptoms, and outcomes; and the minimization of impediments to accurate decision making. The authors merge applied clinical tasks in the mental health field with decision research and cognitive psychology to suggest ways in which prediction, diagnosis, and assessment can be accomplished with greater efficacy and precision.

How Do You Hug a Cactus? Reflective Parenting with Teenagers in Mind

Routledge 出版
2024/02/23 出版

Have you ever wondered what's going on in your teenager's mind? This engaging book will give you the tools to understand just that to ultimately help you keep the close connection you both need during these tricky years.Following on from her acclaimed book for parents of younger children, Sheila Redfern brings the reflective parenting model to parents of teenagers. Teenagers can be experienced as prickly and hard to get close to - like a cactus - but Dr. Redfern shows us how this stage of your child's life can be more enjoyable and connected than you'd imagined. Rather than focusing on their behaviours, this book emphasises how we can teach teenagers to manage their feelings and relationships in safe ways. It advocates theories underpinning reflective parenting - mentalizing, attachment and neuroscience - as essential for building resilience and security in young people, which is crucial through the storm and stress of adolescence. Chapters are filled with everyday, relatable scenarios and practical advice on pressing issues such as self-harm, social media and gaming, risk and ASD. There is also a chapter devoted to adoptive parents and foster carers. This practical guide aims to help readers become more reflective and available as parents and understand what might be in their teenager's head. It also serves as an essential resource for clinicians working with families.

Marriage is the most demanding and potentially rewarding relationship for many adults. Learning to navigate its challenges can be difficult. Recovery from Schizophrenia

2024/02/16 出版

Evidence from two highly regarded three-decade NIMH follow-up studies of schizophrenia and other psychoses, conducted by Courtenay Harding and her research team, have revealed that one half to two-thirds of even the most disabled schizophrenia patients achieved significant improvement, and even recovery, over time. These findings are consistent with those from nine other decades'-long studies from across the world, as well as many shorter-term investigations as well. But the field of psychiatry has nevertheless largely failed to accept that recovery is possible for most psychotic patients. Recovery from Schizophrenia provides numerous examples of patients becoming productive citizens, overcoming difficult starts in early life, alongside exciting program strategies and additional research evidence - evidence that provides a blueprint for both how to build new and successful mental health systems, and how to significantly improve clinical training programs. Unfortunately, most service systems still provide primarily stabilization, maintenance, medications, and entitlements under the new guise of rehabilitation. Critical changes need to occur in public policy, funding mechanisms, program design, and new clinical expectations to improve patient care-all of which will promote much more significant improvement and recovery. Discussion of these critical issues is presented here in accessible prose, allowing readers from a range of backgrounds - families, clinicians, and researchers alike - to experience the ups and downs of an entire field trying to solve the puzzle of recovery from schizophrenia in the usual settings. Recovery from Schizophrenia is the remarkable story of these patients and the scientists and caring professionals who refused to let go of hope for better outcomes.

Shame and Anger in Psychotherapy

2024/02/08 出版

This book examines shame and anger, their relationship with one another, and how mental health providers can work with each of them to produce therapeutic change. Although very different emotions, shame and anger are highly related in therapy. Because shame and anger have both adaptive and maladaptive forms, intervention differs depending on what type of shame or anger is being experienced and in what sequence they occur. Therapists need to consider the type of shame or anger they are dealing with and how the two emotions interact before they can make process diagnoses of what is occurring at different moments in a session. This book emphasizes the benefits of accessing and experiencing shame and anger viscerally to promote emotion change in therapy. It teaches therapists how to help clients access their shame or anger in a safe therapeutic setting to make this emotion amenable to transformation, and create new narratives based on the transformed feelings.

Psychotherapy

2024/01/30 出版

The radical and controversial treatise on the practical applications of modern Psychology."Psychotherapy is the practice of treating the sick by influencing the mental life." -Hugo M羹nsterberg"Succeeds in being at once interesting and instructive. It professes to elucidate the relations of psychology to medicine, and this, not with the idea of stirring up interest, but rather of bringing an already present interest from mere gossip, vague mysticism, and medical amateurishness to a clear understanding of principles." -The Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Volume 5, 1910"A new and urgently needed contribution to the science of curing mental and bodily disorders through influence on the mind....There had been too much misguided curiosity on the part of the public, too much dabbling in psychological half-knowledge and, on the part of the physicians, too much ignorance of the curative virtues of psychological treatment. In the interest of physicians who needed information, not from a psychiatrist but from an experimental psychologist, and in the interest of the public groping among the mists of indefinite conceptions, there was needed such a book. Accordingly, as soon as it was published, it was devoured by hungry readers." -Margarete Anna Adelheid M羹nsterberg, "Hugo M羹nsterberg: His Life and Work"

2024/01/30 出版

Workouts for Stepping into Emotionally Focused Therapy is a companion to Stepping into Emotionally Focused Therapy: Key Ingredients of Change (2nd ed.). Inspired by Deliberate Practice, it is filled with exercises called workouts first with couples (EFCT), followed by a series of workouts in that same skill or move with individuals (EFIT).The workouts are more than skill-drills. They are clear, tangible ways for the reader-practitioner to become emotionally engaged within self and in attunement with each client scenario and to strengthen their EFT muscles with the practice of each of these EFT ingredients of change. Part 1 includes workouts of ten micro-skills across a wide range of client scenarios, including diversity of racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, religious, neurodiversity, and other contextual diversity. Workouts with the five moves of the EFT Tango, from beginning of therapy to the completion of Stage 2 change, first with a couple and then with an individual, make up Part 2. The reader-practitioner has opportunity in Part 3 to apply the macro-intervention to Stages 1 and 2 change in their own lives, to explore barriers to following and deepening emotions, and to utilize a series of antidotes for typical EFT therapist challenges and goal-setting.Containing practical handles for the new clinician or graduate student wanting to integrate EFT into their practice, it is also stimulating and relevant for seasoned therapists and counselors seeking to sharpen EFT skills and develop confidence in the model with both couples and individuals.

The Magic of Living Consciousness

Palgrave M 出版
2024/01/23 出版

This book demystifies the notion of living consciousness and aims to show that, far from being a mere accompaniment to brain functions, living consciousness defines the features of both physical objects and human artifacts. The distinction is between living consciousness, which includes subjective experiences 'here and now' (e.g., perceptions, feelings, imagination, and creative thinking) and conforms to the laws of magic, versus objectified consciousness that comprises physical (e.g., computers) and symbolic (e.g., languages and concepts) human artifacts and conforms to the laws of nature and formal logic. The magnificent success of science in the modern world has plunged many scientists into the illusion that magical events are ancient history and exist today only in art and night dreams. The illusion reached its pinnacle in the middle of the 20th century, when nuclear power stations, flights to the Moon, early computers, genetic engineering and other wonders of science made some scientists believe that there is nothing in the world that cannot be explained by science. But there was a price to pay for this scientific optimism - the scientists became blind to their living consciousness. They began looking at the world as if nature and objectified consciousness were the only things that mattered, with living consciousness being viewed as a mundane thing that accompanies brain processes but has no causal powers. This book examines how our living consciousness works, and how our understanding of this work helps in solving key problems of modern life, such as facilitating creativity, protecting from magical manipulation with minds, fighting certain kinds of crime, managing fake reality, preventing misuses in psychotherapy and other psychological practices, comprehending controversial issues in science, and tracing origins of totalitarian media narratives that trigger hatred and wars.

Disorder-Specific Psychodrama Therapy in Theory and Practice

Springer 出版
2024/01/19 出版

The open access book explains the practical approach in psychodrama with the help of multidisciplinary theories of self-development, mentalization, play, and psychosomatic resonance. These theories help to structure the therapeutic experiences of Moreno and other psychodramatists and to compare them with experiences and theories of other psychotherapy methods. Against this background, the author develops models of a disorder-specific psychodrama therapy for people with personality disorders, borderline organization, trauma disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, depression, grief reactions, suicidal crises, masochism, psychoses, addiction disorders, eating disorders, and behavioral addictions. The therapy models convey a deep understanding of these disorders and sometimes open up new ways of treatment. They can be used both in individual and in group therapy. The methods are explained with the help of more than 120 case examples. The theoretical explanation makes the psychodramatic action methods accessible and applicable to therapists from other schools of therapy as well as in counseling and coaching. This makes the practical work therapeutically more effective and creative. This is an open access book.

Understanding Mental Health Apps

Palgrave M 出版
2024/01/16 出版

This is the first book to look exclusively from at the use of MHapps from an applied psychosocial perspective. Much of the academic literature on MHapps in psychology focuses on the clinical efficacy of using apps (e.g., depression reduction as result of using a certain app) and will typically report on the use of randomised controlled trials (or a similar method) to illustrate the use of apps as a tool for improving a psychological condition. Therefore, the main benefit of this book is that it recognises the impact of apps from a social perspective and will aim to show how everyday forms of distress are embedded in the use of these apps and the broader set of relations that constitute people's everyday lives. The content of this book will identify how an applied social perspective can offer insight into the power of apps to shape our sense of ourselves and of others. This book will be of use to educators and students in psychology, sociology, health studies, media studies andcultural studies.

Psychotherapeutic Treatment of Psychosis

Routledge 出版
2024/01/11 出版

This book explores the psychoanalytic treatment of a patient with psychosis from a range of different psychotherapeutic perspectives. The psychotherapeutic treatment of psychotic individuals is both rare and controversial with a limitation in availability of clinical material. As psychoanalytically oriented therapy is private, it is almost impossible to "witness" the actual human interaction of therapeutic process. While catatonia is a rare disorder, there are many attempts to hypothesize a theoretical psychic structure for the range of disorders called psychotic. Therapists rarely report "successful" outcomes of long and unusual treatments. In the book, a fragment of the treatment of a catatonic adolescent is reconstructed as an endeavor in representing that which is not clinically representable. Following the case report, which also reveals part of the history of the therapist, prominent analytic clinicians of different theoretical orientations share their understanding and comment on the material revealed. With a fresh perspective on psychoanalytic treatment of psychosis, this book is essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and clinicians involved in the treatment of psychosis.

Peer Support Work

Daryl,Mahon  著
2023/12/18 出版

As health and social care policy evolves, peer support is an increasingly recognised method to help improve the outcomes of care by drawing on those with lived experience. However, despite the establishment of a research basis that demonstrates the methods' value in care, implementation of lived experiences of peers in practice contexts faces difficulties. To aid the progress of peer support care, Peer Support Work highlights the experiences of contributors who work or study social care and have lived experience with mental health, substance use, homelessness, criminal justice, and migration. Beginning with the historical context of peer support and moving through the practical implementation of peer support into policy and organizational contexts, this innovative title draws on the contributors' collective experiences, supported by rigorous academic research, to distil the outcomes, benefits, training and implementation challenges within this emerging practice and research context. Researchers interested in moving the field forward will benefit from this comprehensive analysis of the existing research on peer support work. The input from contributors with lived experience makes this unique title an excellent resource for policymakers in addition to academics.
