Using Art, Play, Metaphor, and Symbol with Hard-to-Reach Young Clients

Routledge 出版
2022/12/15 出版

This book demonstrates some of the unique ways in which therapists can help complex and vulnerable clients considered "hard-to-reach", using arts media and play. Using a wealth of case studies, contributors describe their unique therapeutic attempts to reach clients who, for various reasons, seem unreachable. These moving therapeutic journeys are described in a phenomenological, auto-ethnographic way by the therapists themselves, as a series of "snapshot" glimpses into the therapy room. The therapists describe how combinations of art, play, metaphor, and imagination have helped them navigate the complex pathways to reach their clients. Each chapter is fully supported by the contributing therapists' own selection of theoretical ideas and analysis. The book will help therapists consider innovate creative approaches in their work with clients who have been deemed too complex to work with in individual therapy, emphasising the importance of play and arts resources in helping them achieve this.

Phone Therapy

Sarah,Hart  著
Routledge 出版
2022/12/15 出版

Phone therapy is as relevant as it was 50 years ago. The increased use of this medium during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the revision of professional therapy body guidance, has endorsed the validity and effectiveness of phone therapy. From assessments, contracting and core skills to assumptions, disinhibition and privacy issues, it supports therapists and counselling organisations to embrace the accessibility, flexibility and creativity that therapy by phone provides. Relevant for experienced and trainee therapists alike, this book provides practitioners with the support and knowledge to confidently use phone therapy in their practice.

Finding a Way to the Child

Routledge 出版
2022/12/15 出版

Margaret Rustin's writing is characterised not only by its subject matter, which is diverse, but by her imaginative sensitivity to the emotional lives of children and young people, the depth of her understanding, and her original insights into the complexities of child and adolescent psychotherapy. Here a selection of her work, edited by Kate Stratton and Simon Cregeen, is brought together in a collection which focuses mainly on clinical issues and concerns: the dynamics of the interaction between patient and therapist in the consulting room; the task of assessment; the particular needs of children and young people whose early development has been distorted by trauma, loss or neglect; and the framework and skills required for effective psychoanalytic work with parents. Illustrated by vivid narratives detailing the strains and possibilities of the therapeutic encounter, this book is a record of clinical work and thinking over 50 years of psychoanalytic practice. It will prove essential reading for psychoanalysts and child analysts, child psychotherapists, all those training as mental health professionals in work with children and parents, and anyone with an interest in deepening their understanding of the emotional lives of children and young people.

A Clinician’s Guide to Understanding and Using Psychoanalysis in Practice

Paul,Terry  著
Routledge 出版
2022/12/15 出版

This book provides an intimate portrait of a clinician's psychoanalytic approach to working in the public health sector with people suffering from acute and chronic emotional pain. Drawing on three central psychoanalytic concepts of countertransference, projective identification, and the destructive superego, Paul Terry weaves together a unique and distinctive psychoanalytically-based approach to psychotherapeutic work. He illustrates this approach in detailed, almost moment-by-moment case studies of his work with people suffering from depression, psychosis, dependency, loneliness, dementia, and terminal illness. He also shows how his approach helps him to understand social and political issues of war, the holocaust, entitlement, and sexual identity. For readers unfamiliar with psychoanalytic theory, the book concludes with an appendix in which there is a summary of some Kleinian psychoanalytic concepts and psychoanalytic studies of psychosis. This informative, compelling, and moving book will act as a valuable resource for students training in psychoanalysis and to work in public settings along with career psychologists and mental health professionals seeking to better understand their clients and experiences.

A Study into Infant Mental Health

Routledge 出版
2022/12/15 出版

This book is a study of infant mental health which blends knowledge and understanding from three perspectives: international research, theory, and intervention. The volume increases awareness of the significance of infant mental health, adding to the growing body of literature on influences upon lifestyles, communities, society, and attainment. The significance of mental health to development has come to the fore in recent years and research in neuroscience is used to explore, and to understand the complexities of the human brain. Each infant is exposed to unique influences before and after birth. Neuroscience, genetics, adverse childhood experiences, and personalities feature in the chapters as mitigating factors to attainment. Exemplars create a bridge between research and implementation of recommendations, and illustrate the myriad of influences and permutations that can enhance or hinder development. This book discusses internal influences from an infant's biological make-up, alongside the circumstances and relationships within a family unit, as understanding these key aspects is integral to promotion of each infant's life chances. The volume concludes by considering future approaches to nurturing infant mental health. Carefully designed to stimulate discussion and professional inquiry, this volume is an invaluable resource for researchers, academics, and scholars with an interest in infant mental health.

Evidence-Biased Antidepressant Prescription

Palgrave M 出版
2022/12/12 出版

This book addresses the over-prescribing of antidepressants in people with mostly mild and subthreshold depression. It outlines the steep increase in antidepressant prescription and critically examines the current scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of antidepressants in depression. The book is not only concerned with the conflicting views as to whether antidepressants are useful or ineffective in various forms of depression, but also aims at detailing how flaws in the conduct and reporting of antidepressant trials have led to an overestimation of benefits and underestimation of harms. The transformation of the diagnostic concept of depression from a rare but serious disorder to an over-inclusive, highly prevalent but predominantly mild and self-limiting disorder is central to the books argument. It maintains that biological reductionism in psychiatry and pharmaceutical marketing reframed depression as a brain disorder, corroboratingthe overemphasis on drug treatment in both research and practice. Finally, the author goes on to explore how pharmaceutical companies have distorted the scientific literature on the efficacy and safety of antidepressants and how patient advocacy groups, leading academics, and medical organisations with pervasive financial ties to the industry helped to promote systematically biased benefit-harm evaluations, affecting public attitudes towards antidepressants as well as medical education, training, and practice.

Subversion and Desire

Manu,Bazzano  著
Routledge 出版
2022/11/24 出版

This book presents the importance of subversion in psychotherapy and revaluates the positive role of desire as an integrating force in the individual and collective psyche. The text provides a solid philosophical frame which helps to expand the scope of contemporary psychotherapy at a time when it is being curtailed by a reductionist neoliberal zeitgeist. The latter emphasizes cognition over motivation, behaviour over emotion, consciousness over the unconscious, the self over the organism, and tends to reframe psychotherapeutic practice as a reprogramming of individuals. In response, this book outlines concerted acts of "soft subversion" which can undermine the status quo and open new possibilities of individual and collective transformation. The author also retraces and reassesses some of the more inspiringly subversive legacies in psychoanalysis, with a view to sketching a life-affirming psychology wedded to broadminded political engagement.Covering psychotherapy, politics, art and literature, and social and cultural theory, this book will appeal to anyone interested in understanding how psychotherapy and philosophy can be more radical and subversive endeavours.

Perceived parental attitude in relation to the personality of the adolescent

Renjini,T  著
Ingram 出版
2022/11/18 出版

called college years which he remember so happily tinged with nostalgia he becomes apprehensive. Adolescence is often referred to as the period of storm and stress and this is one source of apprehension for parents. In a traditional society like India, earlier this stage was not given much importance and this stage just passed like any other. Mostly parents decided what was good for their children and obedience was the norm. Now the world has become a global village. Adolescents are aware of what is happening all over the world and are aware of the life, freedom and choices enjoyed by their counterparts elsewhere. Parents now become confused as to what extent they should give freedom to their adolescents. The problems highlighted by media about internet and face book related abuse, mobile phone use and abuse, teenage suicides all add to their woe. At times like this they look up to psychologists for guidance and it becomes the responsibility of the psychologists to intervene to study problems of concern to society in a systematic manner and offer appropriate guidance. 1.2 Parenting Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood, and it refers to the aspects of raising a child aside from the biological relationship. Furthermore, it's a kind of rearing that teaches them to be a self-reliant individual to lead an independent life. Unfortunately the "biological relationship" makes many parents possessive, and moulds their offspring to a clone of their alike or a version of their dream or aspirations. This irony in parental care forces one to explore what are the perceptional differences in parenting, and finally understanding what is effective parenting. Parenting may be defined as purposive activities aimed at ensuring the survival and development of children. It derives from the Latin verb "par ere"-To bring forth, develop, or educate. The word parenting from its root is more concerned with the activity of educating and developing than who does it. Parenting processes can be defined as activities that are specifically aimed at promoting the child's welfare. In turn this can be subdivided into parenting activities, i.e. the core elements of necessary and

Internal Family Systems Therapy for Addictions

Cece,Sykes  著
2022/11/17 出版

So often, addiction is viewed as a disease or an uncontrollable habit that signals a lack of willpower. In Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy for Addictions, IFS educator Cece Sykes, IFS author Martha Sweezy, and IFS founder, Richard Schwartz, suggest a paradigm shift. Rather than viewing addiction as a pathology, they propose that it reflects the behavior of polarized, protective parts struggling to manage underlying emotional pain. In this manual, therapists will learn to access their core, compassionate Self and collaborate with clients in befriending protective parts who engage in addictive processes; healing the vulnerable, wounded parts they protect; and restoring balance to their system. Included inside: Experiential exercises to help clients (and therapists) get to know their own parts Guidelines for conducting assessments in an engaging, collaborative way Clear strategies for negotiating internal conflict and navigating polarizations between opposing parts Case examples annotated with step-by-step explanations Downloadable worksheets, handouts, and meditations

Psychology of Anima and Animus

In this psychology essay we debate the hypothesis of the progeny of the number of the two beasts in the psychic-quantum processes of anima and animus, when analyzing the Apokalypsis of St. John and Daniel. Other issues analyzed are the archetypal images projected in man's subconscious, through the forces of Venus (♀). On the other hand, as archetypal images are projected into the subconscious of the woman, through the dynamic forces of Mars (♂). In both cases it is possible to evaluate the phenomenon of psychic entropy, when the woman (animates) risks assuming the male persona; while the man (the animus) risks assuming the female persona; however, when they manifest themselves in society they are known as homosexuality, intersex, etc., because they can present different biological conditions: natural and or through surgery. However, it is necessary to understand that the persona is formed by the aspects of personality that we show publicly. Everyone needs to represent a character who meets the demands of society. The persona is that part of the personality that obeys these social demands. Often related to the profession we practice and the gender to which we belong in the different layers of different social classes and to various other social markers that are part of our life in society. Based on Jung's studies (1985) in "The Self and the Unconscious" "The anima, being feminine, is the figure that compensates for male consciousness. In women, the compensating figure is of a masculine character and can be designated by the name of animus. If it is not simple to expose what one should understand by anima, it is almost insurmountable the difficulty of trying to describe the psychology of animus."

"To treat, even to cure, is not always to heal." In this expansive cultural history of the treatment and healing of mental suffering, Kay Jamison writes about psychotherapy, what makes a great healer, and the role of imagination and memory in regenerating the mind. From the trauma of the battlefields of the twentieth century, to those who are grieving, depressed, or with otherwise unquiet minds, to her own experience with bipolar illness, Jamison demonstrates how remarkable psychotherapy and other treatments can be when done well. She argues that not only patients but doctors must be healed. She draws on the example of W.H.R. Rivers, the renowned psychiatrist who treated poet Siegfried Sassoon and other World War I soldiers, and discusses the long history of physical treatments for mental illness, as well as the ancient and modern importance of religion, ritual, and myth in healing the mind. She looks at the vital role of artists and writers, as well as exemplary figures, such as Paul Robeson, who have helped to heal us as a people. Fires in the Dark is a beautiful meditation on the quest and adventure of healing the mind, on the power of accompaniment, and the necessity for knowledge.

Writat 出版
2022/11/02 出版

Illustrated with beautiful chapter headings that match the book cover! Though it has now fallen out of favor among many practitioners and scholars, Freud's concept of psychoanalysis -- an approach that focuses primarily on adverse events in early childhood and irrational drives that are overcome via extended talk therapy -- was and continues to be enormously influential, not only in the realm of psychology, but also in the larger culture. This volume offers a comprehensive overview of psychoanalysis from the point of view of the field's creator. As part of our mission to publish great works of literary fiction and nonfiction, Sheba Blake Publishing Corp. is extremely dedicated to bringing to the forefront the amazing works of long dead and truly talented authors.

The American Family

Ingram 出版
2022/10/23 出版

If we look deeply enough, we can connect to all the parts within us. Ten years ago, Ilyse Kennedy was a disconnected twenty-something, sitting on a therapy couch, a client grappling with her own trauma recovery. Now, as a trauma therapist, Kennedy shows up with a calming presence, ready to attune to her treasured clients. Those who meet her now might be surprised to know that this twenty-something still lives within her, sometimes awakening in response to the familiar. She also has a people pleaser, who caters to the needs of others for self-protection. Then there is the therapist within her, who offers tools and solutions for the clients across from her. The twenty-something, people pleaser, and therapist are all parts within her-they are adaptations she formed in response to traumas-who show up to aid her in interacting with the outside world. In The Tender Parts, part memoir, part self-help, Kennedy leads you through the process of meeting, embracing, and tending to your own parts through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS), a form of therapy that explores the parts within us all. With meditations, exercises, and an introduction to her own parts, she provides you with an opportunity to get to know the parts within yourself, offer them compassion, and relieve them of their burdens so you can heal your inner wounds and be more attuned to the Self. As you meet Kennedy's parts, your understanding and knowledge of your own parts will deepen, allowing you to reconnect with your center and approach the world with openhearted joy.

Integrative Systemic Therapy

Ingram 出版
2022/10/20 出版

Integrative Systemic Therapy, now in paperback, offers a set of templates that enable therapists to navigate the course of therapy, as well as a treasure trove of case examples to illustrate how therapists can use the IST perspective to treat a wide variety of challenging problems. Many psychotherapists today work in agencies where they see individuals, couples, and families from a variety of backgrounds who present with a broad range of problems. Integrative Systemic Therapy (IST) is a framework for these professionals, whether they are training in the basics of therapy or are well established in their careers. IST provides early-career therapists with a framework that guides their work and facilitates lifelong learning. It provides established therapists the opportunity to think outside the box of their established practice, using tools that facilitate more comprehensive care. IST encourages a focused and efficient approach to problem-solving. It offers the means to continually assess the full complement of factors--psychological, biological, interactional, and cultural--that impact clients and their concerns. IST's blueprint for decision-making in therapy encourages practitioners to draw upon the valuable strategies of various theoretical models and empirically supported treatments.
