Captured Futures
Environmental politics 'as we know it' cannot deliver. Despite all efforts, politics is unable to bend the ecological trends. Maarten A. Hajer and Jeroen Oomen argue that this is because environmental politics is 'captured'. This capture doesn't just express itself in lobbying or a lack of political will, but in a capture of the imagination: we seem unable to imagine futures that are meaningfully different from the present. Examining environmental politics as drama reveals how all actors play their particular roles in this capture: scientists funnel narrow policy futures through their models; activists adopt politically expedient language; and policymakers look for safe, technologically-sound 'win-win' solutions. All are captured in a regime of ecological modernization that entertains too-narrow a solution space. For Hajer and Oomen, this is cause for concern: we have entered 'a radical age' in which persistent policy failure leads to increased suggestions to engage with speculative geoengineering technologies in a desperate attempt to safeguard the future. On the other hand, they point at the growing societal backlash against environmental policies. Yet in the third part of the book, discourse and dramaturgical analysis appear as a reason for hope, sketching an alternative perspective on environmental politics. It suggests that a new, more cultural approach to environmental politics could have more leverage on the societal imagination. Combining this with the formulation of new discourses and using alternative 'dramaturgies of change', Captured Futures highlights how to find more effective and more inspiring ideas about how to approach the future and, ultimately, liberate environmental politics.

A Relational Approach to NGOs in Global Politics

How do non-governmental organizations (NGOs) create the spaces in which they act, despite all the odds that are stacked against them? States of Ignorance
Much attention has been focused on how states produce knowledge about the people they govern; far less has been written about those aspects of society that states choose to keep obscure. This book makes an original contribution to understanding state ignorance by focusing on one of the most complex and contested social issues of our day: the governance of irregular migrants. Tracing the evolution of state monitoring and control of irregular migrants from the 1960s to the present day across France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the authors develop a theory of 'state ignorance', setting out three complementary ways of understanding such oversights: ignorance as omission, ignorance as strategy, and ignorance as ascription. The findings upend dominant approaches, which tend to assume that states are preoccupied with producing knowledge about their populations, and argues that states have actually been keen to sustain ignorance about their unauthorised populations.
China and African Parliaments
China and African Parliaments maps the political controversies surrounding the designing, making, and utilisation of three parliament buildings in Southern Africa that were financed and constructed by the People's Republic of China (China). The book is the first to explore and explain the impact of China's expanding influence in African parliaments. The financing of African parliament buildings is a new and tangible phenomenon around which to understand China-Africa relations, the evolution of African parliaments, and policy-relevant debates on contemporary representative politics in Africa - topics all tackled in this book. The book draws on eight months of mixed-method fieldwork in Lesotho, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. Data was collected through official access to all three buildings, key informant interviews with political and civil society elites, and focus group discussions with a cross-section of ordinary citizens who live and work around the buildings. The book makes two distinct contributions to the China-Africa relations and African parliaments literature. The first contribution is to advance a ground-breaking argument that China's method of donating Parliament buildings to African countries indicates that it is targeting the institution as a site of long-term influence. The second contribution is to make a theoretical and comparative case to utilise discussion of the concept of African legislative institutionalisation through, and in juxtaposition to, these Chinese government-funded parliament buildings. This is the book that is the original thesis on which the Islamic Republic of Iran is founded. The Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist, also called the Governance of the Jurist (Persian: Vilayat-e Faqih; Arabic: Wilayat al-Faqih), is a post-Age-of-Occultation theory in Shia Islam which holds that Islam gives a faqih (Islamic jurist) custodianship over people. Ulama supporting the theory disagree over how encompassing custodianship should be. One interpretation - Limited Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist - holds that guardianship should be limited to non-litigious matters (al-omour al-hesbiah) including religious endowments (Waqf) judicial matters and the property for which no specific person is responsible. Another - Absolute Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist - maintains that Guardianship should include all issues for which Prophet of Islam and Shi'a Imam have responsibility, including governance of the country. The idea of guardianship as rule was advanced by the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in a series of lectures in 1970 and now forms the basis of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The constitution of Iran calls for a faqih, or Vali-ye faqih (Guardian Jurist), to serve as the Supreme Leader of the government. In the context of Iran, Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist is often referred to as "rule by the jurisprudent", or "rule of the Islamic jurist".
