The Hidden Island

Ig Publishin 出版
2025/07/09 出版

"Abraham Jim矇nez Enoa writes like an angel and has an impressively keen social radar...He's an exceptional interlocutor, and, for readers of this unmissable book, he's an empathic, sincere guide to his Cuba, a country as beautiful and beloved as it is sad and unjust."--Jon Lee AndersonThe work of one of the most powerful new voices in independent Cuban journalism, The Hidden Island is a searing portrait of life in contemporary Cuba, where the struggles of ordinary citizens collide with the brutal repression of the government. In this powerful collection of essays, we encounter a memorable and diverse cast of regular Cubans who are trying to survive with few resources and little hope--including a female boxer in a country that has long outlawed women's boxing, a boy who collects money for the country's underground lottery, a male gigolo, and the residents of a neighborhood that is so poor that the government doesn't officially recognize its existence. We also meet the homeless, and vendors who eke out a meager living by selling fruit and vegetables, scraping by in a former socialist paradise.Jim矇nez Enoa juxtaposes these ordinary lives against the repressive tactics of the government, or "regime." He describes his "walks" around Villa Marista, the headquarters of the secret police, and the spies, confidantes, informers and regime sympathizers who crush anyone who questions the official narrative, which forces many independent journalists into exile. In a final self-portrait in the book about his own exile, Jim矇nez Enoa writes that, "to escape from Cuba is to fall into the world, to realize that Cuba is an island that has been hijacked by a political system which ensures that the country remains locked inside the twentieth century."

Postcolonial Global Justice

Princeton 出版
2025/07/09 出版

A new account of global justice that recovers anticolonial thought for resisting a neocolonial age Politicians and activists today turn to the language of decolonization to call attention to such issues as cultural and linguistic decline, exploitative foreign investment, and global institutions dominated by superpowers. But does anticolonial thought really provide a model for reimagining world politics? The history of decolonization has not resulted in the liberating transformations that many envisioned. In Postcolonial Global Justice, Shuk Ying Chan proposes a new account of postcolonial global justice centered around the value of social equality. Drawing on the thought of Aim矇 C矇saire, Frantz Fanon, Kwame Nkrumah, and Jawaharlal Nehru, Chan argues that a central theme in anticolonial thought is the rejection of hierarchy and the embrace of equality. These ideas from decolonization, she suggests, give us tools for critiquing contemporary global hierarchies and for rejecting postcolonial nationalism more concerned with policing its citizens than promoting their freedom and equality. Following the wave of postcolonial state-founding in the twentieth century, many in the West saw decolonization as largely accomplished--and yet global politics continue to feature hierarchies that resemble colonial relations. Chan investigates these new and persistent colonial hierarchies across three areas of contemporary world politics: international investment, cultural imperialism, and global governance. Exploring the changes needed to move toward a new, more equal postcolonial world order, Chan offers a vision of global justice rooted in the unrealized egalitarian aspirations of anticolonial thinker-activists, prompting us to rethink what decolonization may mean today.

Building Forward Better

Can the pandemic serve as a turning point for cities in Asia and the Pacific - not just for recovery, but for a leap forward? Building Forward Better offers a compelling collection of speeches and insights from Prof. Bambang Susantono, exploring how urban development can evolve in a post-pandemic world. Emphasizing the slogan "building forward better" rather than "building back better," the book delves into several key themes: digitalization and the economy, education and skills development, climate resilience, climate finance, connectivity, and sustainable development. This book's first theme explores how the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the ongoing digital transformation for individuals and businesses. The second theme examines the pandemic's impact on education and skills, particularly the shift to online learning and the growing need for lifelong upskilling. The third theme highlights the increasing urgency of addressing climate change in Asia and the Pacific, with a focus on building climate resilience. The fourth theme centers on discussions of climate finance, including topics such as carbon pricing, climate banks, and sustainable finance. The fifth theme addresses connectivity in cities, from transportation to infrastructure. The final theme explores strategies for aligning city development efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly about gender equality and youth empowerment. Lastly, the book consolidates its discussions by summarizing the key points of each theme, reiterating the concept of "building forward better" to promote sustainable development and resilience in the region.

Reclaim of the Sovereign Self

Lulu.com 出版
2025/07/09 出版

The author of this book: with the title "Reclaim of the Sovereign Self" Wilfred-Leonard forms a powerful philosophical and political manifesto for individual sovereignty, moral autonomy, and resistance against institutional coercion. In this book that represents lots of earlier books like "De Biecht" and "Position Paper", he characteristically combines dense, natural and highly intelligent critique with personal testimony and legal-philosophical reasoning. He opposes reductionist psychiatry, bureaucratic overreach, and the erosion of natural rights through constructed legal fictions like 'citizenship'. His intention is not only to expose these systems but to awaken what he terms the "sovereign human", an individual living in alignment with the God or the Universe, the truth, conscience, and unalienable human rights. Referring to great thinkers such as Hannah Arendt, Richard Gosden and also Irvin Yalom, Wilfred-Leonard merges universal insight with existential urgency. He frames psychiatry and state power - governments and NGO's - not as neutral entities but as tools of normalization, erasure, and spiritual suppression. These texts are essential for readers seeking to reclaim their moral agency in an age of administrative depersonalization. Wilfred-Leonard's clarity, intensity, and deep ethical conviction mark him as a rare and necessary voice in our time. Good luck studying it.

Media and the British General Elections of 2015-2019

2025/07/09 出版

This book brings together cutting-edge research on media in British elections. Chapters from a range of authors link extensive content analysis data from traditional and online media with survey data on political attitudes and behaviour in the three general elections between 2015 and 2019. The book examines a wide variety of topics that go well beyond the typical subjects of media effects research, including priming, intermedia agenda-setting, and media coverage of women and ethnic minority candidates and its impact. It provides the first comprehensive survey of media effects in contemporary British politics in 25 years. Many of the findings suggest more robust media effects in British elections than the conventional wisdom has allowed, and urge deeper engagement from scholars and practitioners with this strand of election analysis.

Influencing the Influencers

This rare work is an unorthodox but informed approach to understanding and countering terrorism and insurgency narratives. The author's candid ethnography of communication and organizational communication in progressive Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia is examined within the communication and deception frameworks of the late American information operations scholar Barton Whaley.Nearly 20 years ago, the author shadowed progressive Muslim influencers throughout Islamic boarding school or pesantren communities, studying their communication practices. This period was marked by repeated terrorist attacks claiming hundreds of lives throughout Indonesia and dangerous fugitives responsible for those attacks hiding throughout the country. These fugitives grew up in Islamic boarding schools, in some of the very communities and regions these case studies are based in. Many were hiding near those schools while the author was there. The narratives of the progressive Muslim influencers featured in these ethnographic case studies contrast the narratives of terrorism and insurgency that we might imagine or be familiar with today. What is stark about these case studies are the largely conservative, generational audiences in these Islamic boarding school communities that welcomed many of these progressive narratives, even as more extremist narratives that we might characterize as terrorism and insurgency narratives were projected and shared in these same communities among these same audiences. This work explores how and why those communities responded positively to those influencers. The processes described in this ethnography of communication have not changed much, other than the projection of those same narratives and communication online in greater content. This book is useful for both researchers and practitioners in understanding and countering influence, in the context of terrorism and insurgency narratives.

Existential Politics

Princeton 出版
2025/07/08 出版

A new way to tackle the real politics of climate change through asset revaluation It's no secret that the Paris Agreement and voluntary efforts to address climate change are failing. Governments have spent three decades crafting international rules to manage the climate crisis yet have made little progress on decarbonization. In Existential Politics, Jessica Green explains why this is unsurprising: governments have misdiagnosed the political problem of climate change, focusing relentlessly on measuring, reporting, and trading emissions. This technical approach of "managing tons" ignores the ways that climate change and climate policy will revalue assets, creating winners and losers. Policies such as net zero, carbon pricing, and offsets all cater to the losers--owners of fossil assets. Ultimately, Green contends, climate change is a political problem. Climate politics should be understood as existential--creating conflicts that arise when some actors face the prospect of the devaluation or elimination of their assets or competition from the creation of new ones. Fossil asset owners, such as oil and gas companies and electric utilities, stand to lose trillions in the energy transition. Thus, they are fighting to slow decarbonization and preserve the value of their assets. Green asset owners, who will be the basis of the decarbonized economy, are fewer in number and relatively weak politically. Green proposes using international tax, finance, and trade institutions to create new green asset owners and constrain fossil asset owners, reducing their clout. Domestic investments in green assets, facilitated by global trade rules, can build the political power of green asset owners

A Bit Too Simple

2025/07/07 出版

Narratives like those portraying development workers as heroes and local populations as victims needing to be saved from their own unsustainable practices have led to problematic policies and interventions. Based on fieldwork across four continents, this Element critically analyzes such metanarratives. First, it demonstrates the ways their simplifying, universalistic narrative plots fail to capture more complex lived realities. Second, it argues that such metanarratives on development are converging with influential metanarratives on climate change and sustainability, thereby strengthening hierarchical geopolitical mindsets. Third, it uncovers how the emergence of for-profit sustainability superhero metanarratives reinforces universalistic development logics by combining these logics with global business management logics. The Element concludes that a multiplicity of locally grounded stories and related forms of agency must be mobilized and recognized so that policy and practice are premised upon lived realities, not abstract and unrealistic global imaginaries. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Divided Parties, Strong Leaders

University 出版
2025/07/07 出版

Drawing on nearly a century of legislative history, this careful account invites readers to think anew about when, why, and how leaders of divided parties wield power in Congress. For decades, legislative scholars have viewed party divisions as critical constraints on congressional leadership. The more a party's rank and file disagree with one another, the weaker their leaders are predicted to be; as member preferences converge, leader power is thought to increase. In a powerful corrective to this prevailing view, Ruth Bloch Rubin argues that party divisions are not inherently limiting. Divided Parties, Strong Leaders highlights and examines variation in how members of party factions choose to work together. She shows that leaders of divided parties are well positioned to overcome, and even draw strength from, their divided ranks when the collaborative efforts of their coalitions' competing factions are evenly matched. By contrast, their capacity to get what they want is more limited when one faction has out-collaborated its competition. Presenting detailed case studies of some of the most storied leaders of the postwar Congress, including Speakers Sam Rayburn and Nancy Pelosi, Bloch Rubin analyzes the factional configuration each leader encountered and explains why it mattered for their exercise of power.

Advocacy Practice for Social Justice

2025/07/07 出版

Advocacy Practice for Social Justice is a clear, comprehensive, and practical resource for social work courses in advocacy, community practice, and macro practice. The text provides extensive information on the value base for advocacy; an examination of why people get involved in advocacy; and step-by-step instructions for social workers and others who want to impact laws, regulations, and policies at any level. Bearing in mind the National Association of Social Workers' Code of Ethics' requirements to advocate on behalf of vulnerable populations, readers learn that advocacy is a problem-solving technique similar to that used in social work practice of all types. The book moves through the stages of advocacy: getting involved; understanding the issue; planning; advocating through education, persuasion, and negotiation; presenting information effectively; monitoring and evaluating results; and integrating advocacy into a social worker's everyday practice.

Substance Abuse and the Family

Routledge 出版
2025/07/07 出版

This fully updated third edition of Substance Abuse and the Family demonstrates what it means to view addiction through a systems lens by considering biology and genetics, family relationships, and larger systems.Michael D. Reiter illustrates how to examine a person's predilection to become addicted, their social environment around substance use, the functionality of their family, and various treatment options. Chapters are organized around two sections: assessment and treatment. The first section pays attention to how the family system organizes around substance use and abuse. Here family roles, culture, and other issues such as family violence and resilience are covered. Two chapters are also included on the neuroscience and genetics of addiction. There are also chapters on roles of family members in addicted families, using genograms, and working in a culturally sensitive way, with culture-specific consideration paid to Black, Hispanic and Latin American, Asian American, and Indigenous families. A separate chapter examines issues faced by both youth and adult children of alcoholics. The second half of the book explores what a systems orientation means in practice and goes over self-help groups for individuals and families. An overview of the major family therapy theories is included, which examines intergenerational, experiential, communication, strategic, systemic, and postmodern models. New to this edition is a chapter on trauma and stigma and its relationship to addictions and substance use and abuse. Each chapter has been updated with cutting-edge research and additional figures to enhance concepts, as well a case application to demonstrate and apply each chapter's ideas.Intended for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as beginning practitioners, this text provides one of the most in-depth examinations on the topic available.

Harmful Practices and Human Rights: An International Perspective

Palgrave M 出版
2025/07/04 出版

Harmful Practices and Human Rights examines different forms of harmful practices, globally, which constitute human rights violations as guaranteed in international and regional human rights instruments. Drawing examples from Africa, Asia, North America, Europe, and Australasia, it demonstrates how these practices undermine the right to health, including sexual and reproductive health, and also impugn the dignity and autonomy of women and girls. Using diverse harmful practices as case studies, the book critically examines the factors that drive harmful practices in developing and developed countries. Specifically, this book focuses on a selection of harmful practices--including dowry payments, ukuthwala, intimate partner violence, harmful tobacco use and its gendered implications, trafficking in persons, widowhood practices, the chinamwari/khomba practice, and child marriage--from both the Global South and North. Its intent is to demonstrate the prevalence of these abuses and underscore the urgent need for states to take decisive steps toward eradication.

Drones in the African Battlespaces

Springer 出版
2025/07/04 出版

This book, a collaborative endeavour by experts from various disciplines, meticulously investigates the increasing reliance on drones in conflicts across Africa, delving into their geopolitical, tactical, and ethical ramifications. By emphasising African perspectives, it examines the distinct dynamics of the region, highlighting the interactions between state actors, non-state actors, and external powers. The contributions explore the proliferation of armed and unarmed drones and their deployment by violent non-state actors alongside the rise of indigenous drone manufacturing. Topics include counterterrorism, sovereignty, and regional stability. The analysis is enriched with in-depth case studies, offering a nuanced understanding of the tactical, operational, and strategic implications of drones in African battlespaces. The book underscores the potential of drones to address Africa's unique security challenges, such as irregular warfare and porous borders, while also raising ethical concerns related to surveillance, civilian casualties, and dual-use technologies. Drones in the African battlespaces provide a timely, comprehensive examination of how unmanned systems are reshaping warfare and security across the continent, inviting policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to critically engage with the implications of this technological shift for Africa's future.

The Politics of Failed Policies

Sarah,James  著
2025/07/03 出版

The Politics of Failed Policies examines the darker side of state autonomy and policy experimentation in our federal system: policy failure. While advances in statistics and computing promised the ability to evaluate the outcomes of state policies more precisely and accurately, the path from information to responsive policy remains far from guaranteed, especially given our highly polarized political climate. Most of the existing scholarship focuses on individual characteristics that affect public officials' likelihood of internalizing new information and refining their policy preferences. In stark contrast, author Sarah James takes a historical institutionalist approach and shows that the design, resources, and processes of state-level research institutions can systematically influence when evidence can overcome confirmation bias and partisan preferences among elected state officials evaluating a policy. This work contributes a more precise definition of a state's capacity for research that better explains political responses to policy failure. The detailed case studies support a theory of policy feedback in which policy and institutional landscape can empower diffusely organized and disadvantaged policy opponents to overcome the power of the traditional winners in the American political economy. The Politics of Failed Policies takes seriously that policy research and learning are not isolated from the caprices of party politics, and yet James shows that state politics and policymaking are not irrevocably beholden to the whims of partisan bickering. While ideological battles, pressure from well-resourced interest groups, and, yes, even elections, remain formidable forces in American politics, strategically designed state policies and institutions can lay a foundation for building a coalition to respond to actual policy outcomes. Choices about policy and institutional design have long-term effects on when, how, and why public officials feel pressured to acknowledge and respond to policy failure.

Institutional Genes

Chenggang,Xu  著
2025/07/02 出版

This book explores the origins and evolution of China's institutions and communist totalitarianism in general. Contemporary China's fundamental institution is communist totalitarianism. Introducing the concept of "institutional genes" (IGs), the book examines how the IGs institutional genes of Soviet Russia merged with those of the Chinese imperial system, creating a durable totalitarian regime with Chinese characteristics - Regionally Administered Totalitarianism. Institutional Genes are fundamental institutional elements that self-replicate and guide institutional changes and are empirically identifiable. By analyzing the origins and evolution of IGs institutional genes in communist totalitarianism from Europe and Russia, as well as those from the Chinese Empire, the Chinese Communist Revolution, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and post-Mao reforms, the book elucidates the rise and progression of communist totalitarianism in China. The ascent of communist China echoes Mises' warning that efforts to halt totalitarianism have failed. Reversing this trend necessitates a thorough understanding of totalitarianism.

The McNair-Flemming Years, Volume 2

James G,Long  著
FriesenPress 出版
2025/07/02 出版

The McNair-Flemming Years Volume 2, relates a shift of influence by the print media. Newspaper reporting of peacetime events had always expressed a known degree of partisan views, but these suddenly became toxic. The result was a transition of political news from predictable to untrustworthy, to outrageous, and to propaganda. There was an evolution away from text-heavy political advertising based on achievements, to an emphasis on the personality of leadership. In his last public speech before the 1952 election, Premier J.B. McNair said with confidence: "integrity and honesty will win for the Liberal Party," and he was wrong! The image of Premier Hugh John Flemming 1952-1960, was carefully monitored by political campaign manager Dalton Camp, speechwriter Kenneth Carson, and PC Party bagman Ewart Atkinson. Party propaganda and priority news cycle coverage for the new premier, were maintained by Michael Wardell, the editor/owner of Fredericton's Daily Gleaner newspaper and the monthly periodical Atlantic Advocate. While his predecessor was challenged with significant international events, the affable, outgoing Mr. Flemming could concentrate on local events, his obsession with building of the Beechwood Dam, and his own self-promotion. He governed over a period of substantially increased debt, while holding fast to the belief that the path to prosperity was through increased Federal financial support.

Riling Up the Base

de Gruyter 出版
2025/07/01 出版

Riling up the Base argues that stereotypes (especially those relating to immigration, race/ethnicity, and gender), not policies, secured Trump's election win and the ongoing support he enjoys. From his 2015 campaign announcement through his presidential term and in his time out of office, Donald Trump has used stereotypes as a routine feature in his rhetoric. This book defines them as a crucially important strategy for attracting, retaining, and energizing voters. Covering topics like persuasion, agenda setting, critical race theory, and semiotics, the authors use a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to unpack how Trump motivates his base. This book provides a full aggregate explanation of the seemingly mesmerizing attachment and adoration his core supporters feel by explaining the way seemingly disparate theories work both alone and together to expose the mechanisms at play.

Captured

2025/07/01 出版

Four decades ago, faced with a series of economic, political and social crises, business and government leaders in Australia and many other nations were convinced by a well organised ideological insurgency of the need for what at first was presented as a series of technical changes in economic policy. However, neoliberalism quickly became a revolutionary agenda for re-ordering the social democratic state.Captured: How neoliberalism transformed the Australian state directs attention to the central role of state power not just to remake markets, but also to remake a broad swathe of political life, social policy and citizenship. In seeking to undermine the power of organised labour and "unleash" market capitalism, neoliberalism promised a surge of competition, productivity and common prosperity. For the wealthy few, this has indeed been an historically unprecedented time of capital accumulation, but for most, the results have been profoundly disappointing.Today, neoliberalism is in crisis. We are living through an age of great instability, disillusionment and despair. Inequality of income and wealth has been rising; a majority of workers have experienced long-term declining relative living standards; corporate political and market power has reached historic levels; and younger generations are increasingly giving up the expectation of attaining the living standards of their parents. The status of prevailing neoliberal ideas and policy is in increasing disarray. But without a coherent understanding of the ideas and interests driving neoliberalism, many people have turned to incoherent populism for an explanation and salvation and, failing that, even to forms of nihilism. Disillusion and anxiety constitute the dominant mood among the economic and policy elites, within Australia and internationally.Captured presents a series of case studies from leading public policy experts, building critical new insights into the malaise that has characterised the neoliberal era. This book tells the story of how a small group of economists and lobby groups with a universalising agenda of radical change used neoliberalism to transform the state, and of the destructive effects of those policies on everyday life. Captured includes critical accounts of neoliberal policy and speculates on the likely future of neoliberalism as a form of political power and governmentality in Australia.

The Impossible Mission

Outskirts Press 出版
2025/06/30 出版

Our decision to go to war in Iraq was controversial, but our decision to terminate the Iraq war should have been even more controversial. After eight-and-a half years of war, and the sacrifice of 4,614 Americans, it is critical that we as a Nation understand how this war terminated, and study the lessons learned so that we do not have to re-learn it all over again in the next war. This book is about the 2011 drawdown in Iraq which created numerous unintended consequences that failed to line up to our strategic objectives of what we wanted to leave behind, and what Iraq would become as an important partner nation within the middle east region. This book will walk you through the sequence of events from 9/11, which include the decision to go to war in Iraq, the surge in northern Iraq, President Obama's decision to withdraw, the original plans for a residual force, the departure of Multi-National Forces-Iraq (MNF-I) and the circumstances of the immediate aftermath, and the significant strategy changes of the Department of State. It will detail what occurred from not only the U.S. Embassy's perspective, but also from each of our government's departments and agencies, as well as from multiple Iraqi perspectives. It will show how the polarization of the Sunnis and the Kurds by Prime Minister Malaki immediately after the U.S. withdrawal led to the disenfranchised Sunni's who provided safe-haven for a resurrected radical Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which created a caliphate that ultimately led to the return of U.S. forces working with the Iraqi military to defeat ISIS and their caliphate. It studies the Kurd and Arab issues over time and OSC-I's efforts to continue to resolve differences through dialogue and negotiation. It also highlights Iranian influence on key Iraqi leadership, as well as its impact on the OSC-I mission. This is a book scholars and military professionals should study. It is a book that our legislative elected officials will want to read, to understand the privileges and authorities that must be legislated for successful transitions out of war. And it is a book interagency partners and national security authorities should study to understand the interagency teamwork necessary to transition U.S. government departments, from war, to war termination.

Resilience Beyond Rebellion

Sherry,Zaks  著
2025/06/30 出版

Resilience beyond Rebellion addresses a critical question in insurgency studies: Why some rebel groups successfully become political parties, while others die trying. Only half of rebel groups with political aspirations manage to reinvent themselves as lasting political parties. Sherry Zaks argues that the key to successful rebel-to-party transformations lies in the organizational structures and institutions that rebels build during wartime. These proto-party structures, which involve governance, political messaging, social outreach, and other noncombat tasks, equip rebel groups with the personnel, skills, and routines needed to succeed in the electoral arena.Zaks draws on insights from organizational sociology to reconceptualize how rebel groups operate. Through examining the Farabundo Mart穩 National Liberation Front in El Salvador and other cases, they demonstrate that rebel groups with established proto-party structures often form the core of post-conflict parties and attract more votes. Innovative in approach and rich in evidence, Resilience beyond Rebellion advances our understanding of rebel group dynamics both during and after conflict by showing that party-building begins not with the last bullet fired but with the very first.

Freedom of Conscience in (Post)Soviet Space

2025/06/30 出版

Freedom of Conscience in (Post)Soviet Space, a collection of original essays edited by Julie K. deGraffenried, Michael Long, and Xenia Dennen, is inspired by the work of Michael Bourdeaux, the holdings of the Keston Archive, and continuing questions of freedom of conscience. Ranging from England to Siberia and moving chronologically from 1917 to the twenty-first century, this book reveals the unique organization and methodology behind the Keston's collection of materials and the ways those in the West thought about religion and communism during the Cold War, including the connection between religious liberty and human rights. The essays demonstrate the depth and breadth of current research on religion in communist and postcommunist contexts, a much-needed corrective to contemporary political uses of religious freedom. Bourdeaux's activism and preservation of materials influenced many fields of study, as reflected by contributing authors' varied disciplines--history, theology, sociology, languages, and literature. A preface by the theologian and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams comments on Michael Bourdeaux's life and significance.

This is supplemented by interesting, relevant examples from the business, legal, political, and military battlefields.Deep dive into the thoughts of the ultra-powerful to discover their motivations, sources of authority, and secret weaknesses. Enter the war room and examine creative applications of military strategies, intelligence analyses, game theory, and the implantation of false memories. Storm into the hot theatre of operations and explore information warfare, espionage, deception, illusions, persuasion, subversion, brainwashing, deterrence, brinksmanship, surprise attacks, and interrogation tactics. Now you can turn the tables on those who believe they're untouchable. Counseling with Immigrants, Refugees and Their Families from Social Justice Perspectives

2025/06/27 出版

Immigrants and refugees continue to make enormous contributions to the economic, educational, and cultural richness of the U.S. They plan for and manage multiple changes to achieve goals for themselves and their families, and in the process, give back to the U.S. This book provides insight for counselors working with immigrants and refugees and their families across the lifespan. Social justice and multicultural counseling competency frameworks ground this text, which is intended for counselors working in academic settings, conducting research, and practicing in different contexts. Because immigrants and refugees have various cultural heritages, immigration journeys, reasons for migrating, and presenting situations, counselors must be prepared to engage with individuals and families as unique clients. Descriptions of these contextual factors, including data and legislation, are included. This book will guide counselors in recognizing the additional steps they may need to take to account for culture, language, health status, relationships in place, and of course the priority issues (i.e., child's illness and/or school bullying) to be dealt with. Additionally, counselors will learn about the rationale for migration as well as the concentration camps that may be "home" to refugees for an indeterminate time. Counselors will read about losses that affect immigrant and refugee clients and how these "naturally" contribute to sadness, depression, anger, and self-isolation.
