Washington Is Burning
A DEVASTATING ACCOUNT OF AMERICAN MILITARY FOLLY AND POLITICAL DYSFUNCTION BY THE WASHINGTON EDITOR OF HARPER'S MAGAZINE Washington Is Burning reveals the inner workings of Trump's Washington -- a grotesque carnival of corruption. Andrew Cockburn sets fire to US pieties, focusing on the spectacular greed at the heart of the nation's political system. Graft and self-interest have long typified both Democratic and Republican administrations. Cockburn charts the connections between the American military bureaucracy and the defense industry, which have created a senseless drive for ever-greater spending on arms. After the failed adventures of Afghanistan and Iraq, the Pentagon now seeks fresh rewards through inflating the threat from China and Iran, deploying time-tested techniques to boost the budget, including the invocation of supposedly superior enemy weapons development. The American empire has reached a watershed. With Trump back in the White House, Washington Is Burning is a must-read account of unedifying practices in the US capital.
Top Secret Ultra
Shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, a young Peter Calvocoressi was serving in the Ministry of Economic Warfare, his role largely consisting of reviewing shipping manifests day in day out. In 1940, he decided to volunteer for the War Office but was turned away on account of a recently-sustained head injury. The note on his file? "No good for anything - not even intelligence." In spite of this, Calvocoressi was able to apply to the Air Ministry, was commissioned in RAF intelligence and, by early 1941, found himself at Bletchley Park.Calvocoressi was assigned to a section of Bletchley dealing with Luftwaffe Ultra intelligence where - as deputy head and, from 1944, as head - he spent the rest of the war translating and interpreting decrypted Enigma signals. The codebreaking operations at Bletchley Park came to an end in 1946, however all information about this wartime enterprise was classified and remained a secret until the mid-1970s, after which Calvocoressi recounted his experiences at Bletchley in Top Secret Ultra, published in 1980. This comprehensive new edition of Calvocoressi's book features exciting new material from his son David and from renowned historian and author (specialising in signals intelligence) Dr Joel Greenberg. This is required reading for anybody with an interest in this utterly and indisputably fascinating aspect of the Allied war effort during World War II.

A Superpower System for the Region Between Boston and Washington
"A Superpower System for the Region Between Boston and Washington" (1921) envisions a unified, efficient infrastructure network connecting major urban centers. Notes on Democracy
Notes on Democracy by H. L. Mencken is a sharp, irreverent, and fearless dissection of democratic ideals from one of America's most provocative minds. Written in the 1920s-yet stunningly relevant today-Mencken strips the romanticism from democracy and exposes its contradictions, hypocrisies, and absurdities with biting wit and intellectual firepower. In his trademark sardonic style, Mencken questions whether the common people, whom democracy is supposed to empower, are truly capable of governing themselves-or whether democracy is just a spectacle run by mediocrities, for mediocrities. He categorizes political leaders into "demagogues" and "demaslaves," skewering both with equal glee.Far from being a dry political treatise, Notes on Democracy reads like a spirited debate over drinks with the smartest cynic in the room. Love him or loathe him, Mencken will challenge your assumptions, make you laugh, and leave you thinking long after the final page.Perfect for readers who enjoy political philosophy with a sharp edge, or who just want to watch sacred cows get grilled.

The Parties in American Presidential Elections, 1789-2020
This book offers a timely understanding of the history of the Democratic and Republican Parties and their adaptability, endurance, and importance in presidential elections. Taking the reader from the beginnings of parties as caucuses of members of the First Congress meeting in 1789 through November 2020's presidential election, it provides a fascinating historical account of the debates, events, and personalities behind the beginnings of the nation's political parties. This includes the importance of national party nominating conventions in the nineteenth century, the growing importance of primary elections in nominations beginning in the early twentieth century, and the changes of campaigning for presidential candidates as they started to travel across the United States for the first time in the early twentieth century. The book tells the story of the beginnings of nationally televised presidential debates and any number of other changes in the era of broadcasting and now digital platforms for presidential elections in the twenty-first century. It finishes with a look at political dynamics since the November 2020 election and a study of negative partisanship to define how campaigning for the White House works today.

Sustainable Development Through the World of Work
The purpose of this book is to translate the science and practice of Industrial-Organizational (I-O) psychology, or work psychology, as it relates to sustainable development efforts to provide evidence-based insights for those who are working toward the greater good. To maximize the impact of I-O psychology on the greater good, this book is designed to be accessible and is written for readers who do not have a background in I-O psychology or related fields. The volume specifically targets readers who are engaged or want to be engaged in prosocial work across the public and private sectors and who are interested in leveraging the science and practice of I-O psychology to effect prosocial change. The book highlights the areas where I-O psychology has the most unique, practical, and/or useful takeaways to those who are working to move the needle on one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While the SDGs provide the overarching structure of the book, the target audience extends beyond those who explicitly incorporate the SDGs in their framing such as those with prosocial efforts who use a different framing (e.g., ESG) or do not use a particular typology. For example, a private sector leader or organization working to improve gender equity (Gender Equality, SDG 5) or historically marginalized groups (Reduce Inequalities, SDG 10) in their communities or workplace would benefit from this book, regardless of how informed they are about the SDGs. Ultimately, this book extends the reach of I-O psychology to enhance societal well-being

The Advocacy Coalition Framework
This open access book provides an updated and integrated analysis of the Advocacy Coalition Framework, more than thirty years after its conception. First devised in the 1980s to help explain change within public policy processes, the framework has been widely applied, criticized and revised over the last three decades, implemented by policy scholars across the globe, and in hundreds of different languages. Edited by the two foremost ACF scholars, this book analyses the current state and future directions of the Advocacy Coalition Framework. The first section provides a concise overview of the purpose of the framework, as well as its application in previous research. This is followed by eleven cross-section case studies that showcase some of the most exciting developments in ACF scholarship around the globe. It concludes with recommendations for adapting the ACF for future use, as well as new directions of research.
Anti-Racism, Multiculturalism and Human Rights
The continuing prevalence of racial inequality and discrimination is well documented in Britain. While there are multiple accounts of how state institutions are shaped by and reproduce racism, much less has been said about their current and potential contribution to anti-racism. This book elucidates the long-term impact on racism of positive action in employment and multicultural school curricula. It also explores whether international human rights law creates a duty for states to adopt these policies. Positive action and multicultural curricula are not new and have long been advocated by multiculturalists, but this book systematically unpacks how they can counter four structural drivers of racism: racialised national identities, racialised power inequalities, racial fearmongering, and racial segregation. The book goes on to examine the extent to which they have been implemented in Britain, as well as the legal and political opportunities for future development.

The Day My Brother Was Murdered
A Fox News analyst and well-known commentator on urban violence examines the rise in crime and the crisis in public safety affecting American cities and tells how it has personally affected families, including his own.On June 24, 2022, Gianno Caldwell's eighteen-year-old brother, Christian, was murdered. He was standing with friends on a street in the Southside of Chicago when a black SUV pulled up and several unidentified men opened fire. Fifty shell casings were later found at the scene. Three in the crowd were rushed to the hospital; only two survived. His family was shattered, and Caldwell was devastated.Tragically, he is not alone. In this gripping true crime expos矇, Caldwell dives deep into the heart of America's big cities, telling the stories of several other murders that occurred on the same night his brother died, revealing the shocking human tragedy beneath the rise in crime rates. The Day My Brother Was Murdered takes a bold stance, shining a spotlight on the multiple failings of Democratic policies that have transformed our once-thriving metropolises into crime-ridden centers.Caldwell meticulously dissects the consequences of soft on crime policies and progressive agendas that prioritize social experiments over public safety. Though some of the worst cities have the strictest gun control laws, they cannot stop the proliferation of weapons from states with few regulations. He reveals the detrimental effects of failed poverty programs, the effect of the disintegration of two-parent households, the decline of religion, and sanctuary city policies that can help to shield criminals.Combining rigorous research and poignant personal anecdotes, Caldwell provides a comprehensive understanding of the dangers facing urban communities, and presents a compelling case for a new approach to criminal justice reform and why we must reject the status quo and demand change. This powerful blend of memoir and investigative journalism delivers an unflinching look at the American crime crisis: A Personal Story of Violent Crime: Experience the heart-shattering story of the day the author's eighteen-year-old brother, Christian, was murdered on the streets of Chicago, turning a national headline into a personal tragedy. An Expos矇 on Urban Violence: Journey across the country to uncover the stories of other families shattered by murder on the exact same night, revealing the human cost behind rising crime rates.Incisive Political Commentary: A sharp analysis of how progressive agendas and the failure of Democratic policies in America's big cities have prioritized social experiments over the safety of citizens.Deep Dive into Social Issues: Go beyond the headlines to investigate the connections between crime, failed poverty programs, the decline of two-parent households, and ineffective gun control laws.

What Is the Welfare State For?
Most states in the world make some provision for the welfare of their citizens. Every state engages with health care provision, almost all provide education services, and, after an explosion of interest in recent years, a substantial majority now have national schemes in place for cash assistance. Welfare states matter for people's lives - but there is little agreement about what one is. What are these states trying to do, and why? The book discusses the institutions and methods that characterise welfare states around the world. It focuses on the aims, purposes and justifications for social welfare services in order to explain what the welfare state is for.

To Dare Mighty Things
The definitive history of U.S. defense strategy Much of the history of U.S. defense over the course of 250 years has been a story of success. Insulated by two oceans and mostly friendly neighbors, but constantly ambitious abroad, America has dared mighty things and often achieved them, argues defense analyst Michael O'Hanlon. After growing into a continental power, largely through force of arms, during the first half of its history, it then led the way to coalition victories in two world wars, pursued peace in the Cold War, and has contributed to the most democratic period in human history. But it is a more "dangerous nation" than most citizens appreciate, given that its leaders, as well as its people, are highly self-confident and activist. O'Hanlon claims that only by understanding this "national DNA" can we hope to steer safely through the twenty-first century. He further argues that, in contrast to its consistently assertive grand strategy, there has been no single defining American "way of war" since 1775--a good thing, since what often worked for the country in the past may be of less relevance for the modern age.
Divided by Choice
How race and capitalism shape education School choice programs--such as vouchers, education savings accounts, and tax credit scholarships--are surrounded by controversy, raising questions about their impact on student diversity and inequality. In this book, Ryane McAuliffe Straus takes up a core part of this divisive debate, exploring why charter schools are reshaping America's education system--and democracy--for the worse. Drawing on interviews with elected officials, policy entrepreneurs, parents, and activists in Albany, NY, Straus argues that charter schools are a poor alternative to failing public schools, ultimately worsening racial segregation under the guise of providing underprivileged students with access to better education. Taking a wide-ranging view, the author explores why parents, elected officials, and community activists may or may not choose to leave the public education system by enrolling their children in charter schools. Straus finds that when families of color leave public schools in favor of charter schools this removes their democratic voice and participation, diminishing their political power in a high-stakes area of public policy. Divided by Choice highlights the fundamental flaws of one solution to public education inequalities, at a time when racial tensions are at an all-time high.

Campaigns Inc.
Set against the changing and turbulent politics of California from the 1930s through the 1950s, Campaigns Inc.: Leone Baxter, Clem Whitaker, and the Invention of Political Consulting examines the life and work of Leone Baxter and her husband Clem Whitaker. During this era, Baxter and Whitaker invented and refined the field of campaign consulting, a form of public relations practice that manages reputation, image, and communication during a political campaign. This book details their work and the development of their successful political consulting firm Campaigns Inc. They worked for mainly conservative and Republican clients, and it was through this work that Campaigns Inc. set the standard for how campaigns would be structured and run through the next century. The book begins with an overview of Baxter and Whitaker's core philosophy of communication, campaigns, and politics. Cayce Myers details their early work in California's Central Valley and their first big campaign against Democratic nominee Upton Sinclair who ran for California Governor in 1934. The book then examines Baxter and Whitaker's campaign for the successful 1942 Gubernatorial candidacy of Earl Warren. The Warren campaign served as a template for building a campaign around a candidate and not a party. Following that election, Baxter and Whitaker's work transformed to focus on defeating compulsory health insurance reforms. They successfully defeated healthcare reform initiatives by California Governor Earl Warren and later President Harry Truman by shaping public sentiment against the specter of "socialized medicine."

Fear and Smear
Fear and Smear pretty much summed up the whole campaign against Scottish independence. The peddling of fear was a constant tactic from the moment the referendum was first mooted. Scare stories about an independent Scotland having no jobs, no hospitals, no money, no defence capabilities and no way to pay for any kind of welfare screamed at us from our television screens and from every newspaper. Old people were told they would have no pensions and no medical care while there would be no schools for our children. There would be no money, in fact, to pay for anything. Within a decade life in an independent Scotland would be like a Mad Max film. As if that were not bad enough we would also be living under a one-party, fascist state. This was where the smear tactics came in. Alex Salmond was a crazed, power-hungry megalomaniac, while the SNP was nothing more than a latter-day version of the Nazis. The party even had its own version of the SA, the 'Cybernats', who were part of a concerted campaign of intimidation. NO supporters were targeted for abuse and worse, while English people in Scotland were being driven from their homes in an organised effort at ethnic cleansing. Here is the truth about the Better Together campaign. Mistruths, half-truths, disinformation, suppression of the facts and calumny; in fact, anything and everything was done to undermine the case for Scottish independence. Tories, Liberals and Labour all conspired against the independence campaign. There were secret meetings, coalitions in councils, plans to hijack anniversary celebrations and, ultimately, even flouting election rules. Nothing was sacred in the drive to stop Scottish independence happening; even the Queen conspired with politicians in secret. This book lays bare the whole story of this negative campaign. When you read it, and realise just how far the Unionists went, it is surprising that anyone voted for independence at all!

The Initiative and Referendum
In "The Initiative and Referendum: Its Folly, Fallacies, and Failure," James Boyle delivers a critical analysis of direct democracy through initiative and referendum processes. Boyle argues that these mechanisms, often touted as improvements to representative government, are fundamentally flawed and prone to failure. The book dissects the theoretical underpinnings of the initiative and referendum, examining their practical application and unintended consequences. Boyle contends that these processes can lead to poorly considered legislation, manipulation by special interests, and the erosion of constitutional principles. He advocates for a more nuanced approach to governance, emphasizing the importance of informed deliberation and responsible leadership. This work serves as a cautionary tale for policymakers and citizens alike, urging a reevaluation of the role of direct democracy in modern society. Boyle's insights remain relevant for anyone interested in the complexities of democratic governance and the challenges of ensuring effective and equitable policymaking. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Earth Can Still be Home
We can no longer pretend that we can continue the "life as usual" patterns of the past 60 years, but humanity has made it through thousands of other climate catastrophes, and can make it through this one, too.Begun back in the '90s as a handbook for students who wanted to create sustainable communities, this book went into a second form as a resource for anyone who feels the need to understand why we're going through what we've been going through over the past 50 years, and believes that maybe something else is possible.Today, in the mid-2020s, the looming climate crises have pushed us to the point where the ideas in this book are the tools we need to be able to live in harmony with each other and the planet, in a way that can be sustained for generations to come.
