The Compass of Dignity
This volume assembles Jeremy Adler's trailblazing essays in comparative studies, exploring links between literature and the human sciences, notably politics, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and international law. It pivots on major ideas and historical turning-points, above all the Shoah and the exile of German Jewry as well as the Velvet Revolution and Brexit. To understand historical change, he adapts the findings of cultural analysts to literary studies. Key essays examine the genealogy of ideas, like those of persecution and human dignity, and the emergence of comparative literature. A special place is given to the memory of his late father, H. G. Adler, a founding figure in Holocaust Studies.Together with From the Renaissance to Modernism: Goethe and German Poetry, also available in this series, the volume collects the major essays of Jeremy Adler.
How Economic Ideas Evolve
How Economic Ideas Evolve offers a unique perspective on the development of political economies in Europe. With three major contributions, the book first establishes a link between religious, social, and economic ideas and the diverging development of political economies in Europe. Secondly, the work provides a historical sociological analysis of the contextual factors that influenced the development of religiously inspired socio-economic ideas. Chapters examine the impact of these ideas on economic and welfare institutions in Germany and Italy over three centuries. Lastly, the book goes beyond classic historical sociology to focus on the long-term developmental trajectories and impact of ideas on politics and policy. Thorough and expansive, How Economic Ideas Evolve contributes to the emerging scholarship of ideational historical sociology, broadening the toolkit of historical sociology to research the development and impact of socio-economic ideas and ideologies over long periods of time.

The Mission
New York Times Bestseller * A New Yorker Best Book of 2025 * A New York Times Editors' Choice * A Washington Post Notable Book of the Year "No one has opened up the CIA to us like Weiner has, and The Mission deserves to win Weiner a second Pulitzer." --The GuardianA masterpiece of reporting based on-the-record interviews with six former CIA directors and scores of spies, station chiefs, and top operations officers: The Mission is a gripping and revelatory history of the modern CIA, reaching from 9/11 through its covert operations in Afghanistan and Iraq to today's secret battles with Russia and China, concluding with the Agency's own fight for survival under the current president of the United States Tim Weiner's epic successor to Legacy of Ashes, his National Book Award-winning classic about the CIA's first sixty yearsAt the turn of the century, the Central Intelligence Agency was in crisis. The end of the Cold War had robbed the agency of its mission. More than thirty overseas stations and bases had been shuttered, and scores that remained had been severely cut back. Many countries where surveillance was once deemed crucial went uncovered. Essential intelligence wasn't being collected. At the dawn of the information age, the CIA's officers and analysts worked with outmoded technology, struggling to distinguish the clear signals of significant facts from the cacophony of background noise. Then came September 11th, 2001. After the attacks, the CIA transformed itself into a lethal paramilitary force, running secret prisons and brutal interrogations, mounting deadly drone attacks, and all but abandoning its core missions of espionage and counterespionage. The consequences were grave: the deaths of scores of its recruited foreign agents, the theft of its personnel files by Chinese spies, the penetration of its computer networks by Russian intelligence and American hackers, and the tragedies of Afghanistan and Iraq. A new generation of spies now must fight the hardest targets--Moscow, Beijing, Tehran--while confronting a president who has attacked the CIA as a subversive force. From Pulitzer Prize winner Tim Weiner, The Mission tells the gripping, high-stakes story of the CIA through the first quarter of the twenty-first century, revealing how the agency fought to rebuild the espionage powers it lost during the war on terror--and finally succeeded in penetrating the Kremlin. The struggle has life-and-death consequences for America and its allies. The CIA must reclaim its original mission: know thy enemies. The fate of the free world hangs in the balance.A masterpiece of reporting, The Mission includes exclusive on-the-record interviews with six former CIA directors, the top spymaster, thirteen station chiefs, and scores of top operations officers who served undercover for decades and have never spoken to a journalist before.

The British Colonial Discourse of the Indian Threat/ the East Indian Problem in the Politics of the Colony of Trinidad and Tobago (1953-1961), Deconstructed (Revised)
This work originally published in 2009 has been thoroughly revised and republished in 2025 to complete the Simbhoonath Capildeo Dossier. Part 2 focuses on the power relations between the politicians of Trinidad and Tobago for the period 1953 to 1961, namely Dr. Eric Williams, Bhadase Sagan Maraj, Tubal Uriah Butler and Rudranath Capildeo and the British colonial overlord. This work utilises de-classified British government files available at the National Archives of Britain, specifically de-classified files for the period generated by the colonial national security apparatus of Trinidad and Tobago. From these files the hegemonic discourse of the colonial overlord was unearthed and deconstructed revealing the British political agenda for granting independence to the colony of T&T. This British agenda was driven by its disocurse of the "Indian Threat", "The East Indian Problem" in T&T which must be defanged before independence is granted. A chapter on the British de-classified files on Dr Williams before independence in 1962 and thereafter are also included which reveals the approach of the colonial/neo-colonial overlord on Dr Williams. A second section of the work presents for comparative analysis the British colonial agenda for independence for Guyana and the servility of the British governments to the USA and its agenda to bring down the PPP hegemony over the electoral politics of Guyana by any means necessary, which they did. This work then presents a comparative analysis of the agenda of the British colonial overlord for independence for Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana where in T&T they rejected the idea of an Indian/Hindu dominated government whilst in Guyana they embraced Dr Cheddi Jagan and the PPP despite the protests of the USA.

The Communicative Architecture of Policing

Decarbonising Electricity
The current shift to renewable energy is dominated by globalised energy companies building large-scale wind and solar plants. This book discusses the consequences and possibilities of this shift in India, Germany, and Australia, focusing on regions which have now largely decarbonised electricity generation. The authors show how centralised models of energy provision are maintained, and chart their impacts in terms of energy geography, social stratification, and socio-ecological appropriation. The chapters emphasise the prominent role played by state regulation, financial incentives, and public infrastructure for corporate renewables, arguing that public provision should be re-purposed for distributed renewables, social equity in affected regions, and for wider social benefit. This interdisciplinary book provides fertile building ground for research in - and application of - future energy transitions. It will appeal to students, researchers, and policy makers from anthropology, sociology, politics and political economy, geography, and environmental and sustainability studies.
Ruin Their Crops on the Ground
Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in HistoryWinner of the James Beard Media Award in Food Issues and Advocacy The first and definitive history of the use of food in United States law and politics as a weapon of conquest and control, a Fast Food Nation for the Black Lives Matter era In 1779, to subjugate Indigenous nations, George Washington ordered his troops to "ruin their crops now in the ground and prevent their planting more." Destroying harvests is just one way that the United States has used food as a political tool. Trying to prevent enslaved people from rising up, enslavers restricted their consumption, providing only enough to fuel labor. Since the Great Depression, school lunches have served as dumping grounds for unwanted agricultural surpluses. From frybread to government cheese, Ruin Their Crops on the Ground draws on over fifteen years of research to argue that U.S. food law and policy have created and maintained racial and social inequality. In an epic, sweeping account, Andrea Freeman, who pioneered the term "food oppression," moves from colonization to slavery to the Americanization of immigrant food culture, to the commodities supplied to Native reservations, to milk as a symbol of white supremacy. She traces the long-standing alliance between the government and food industries that have produced gaping racial health disparities, and she shows how these practices continue to this day, through the marketing of unhealthy goods that target marginalized communities, causing diabetes, high blood pressure, and premature death. Ruin Their Crops on the Ground is a groundbreaking addition to the history and politics of food. It will permanently upend the notion that we freely and equally choose what we put on our plates.
At the Margins of the Modern State
The international order of the post-WW II period is in disarray. The sounds of war can be heard all around us, from Ukraine to Gaza, from Darfur to the Congo, and there is growing skepticism towards human rights and democracy, the rule of law and peace among peoples.Facile expressions such as "Eurocentrism" and "demise of the West and the rise of the rest" miss the real challenge in this situation: how to extend moral, legal and political universalism to address the experiences of the multitude of humanity for whom western modernity has brought not only equality but also subordination, not only emancipation but also domination. Benhabib argues that rethinking this universalist project and participating in world-building together can be achieved by reconstructing and retrieving the best insights of critical social theory in the Frankfurt tradition and the liberal Kantianism of Rawls and Dworkin. In that spirit, this volume addresses state and popular sovereignty, Third World approaches to International Law, the 1951 Refugee Convention, and climate change legislation, while focusing on the changing fortunes of the European Union and cosmopolitanism. Benhabib engages with postcolonial thinkers and argues that, although validity claims and relations of domination and inequality are often intermixed, it is possible to reconstruct the insights of international law to serve a more inclusive universalism and world-building. This vibrant defense of human rights and universal norms in an age of political skepticism and extremism will appeal to a wide readership and will be of particular interest to students and scholars in political theory, critical theory and law.

Young and Undocumented
The experiences of DACA recipients The children of immigrants who arrive in the United States each year sometimes grow up without any knowledge of their undocumented status and the risks it poses. In this timely and important book, Julia Albarrac穩n explores the lives of undocumented immigrant youth with a focus on the unique experiences of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and DREAMers in the United States. Drawing on interviews and legal research, Albarrac穩n shows us how the precarity surrounding the youth's DACA status impacts their sense of political identity and belonging, particularly as Republican politicians target legal protections provided to them under DACA and the DREAM Act. The author examines how changes in immigration policies expose undocumented youth to constant ups and downs, leaving them in a limbo between deportation and integration into society, and limiting their social, economic, and political opportunities for advancement. Albarrac穩n shows us how DREAMers confront--and fight to overcome--barriers in their lives. Young and Undocumented explores how undocumented youth in the United States navigate their identity in the only country they know as home, and how they come-of-age without a path to citizenship.
Saving Ourselves
We've known for decades that climate change is an existential crisis. For just as long, we've seen the complete failure of our institutions to rise to the challenge. Governments have struggled to meet even modest goals. Fossil fuel interests maintain a stranglehold on political and economic power. Even though we have seen growing concern from everyday people, civil society has succeeded only in pressuring decision makers to adopt watered-down policies. All the while, the climate crisis worsens. Is there any hope of achieving the systemic change we need? Dana R. Fisher argues that there is a realistic path forward for climate action--but only through mass mobilization that responds to the growing severity and frequency of disastrous events. She assesses the current state of affairs and shows why public policy and private-sector efforts have been ineffective. Spurred by this lack of progress, climate activism has become increasingly confrontational. Fisher examines the radical flank of the climate movement: its emergence and growth, its use of direct action, and how it might evolve as the climate crisis worsens. She considers when and how activism is most successful, identifying the importance of creating community, capitalizing on shocking moments, and cultivating resilience. Clear-eyed yet optimistic, Saving Ourselves offers timely insights on how social movements can take power back from deeply entrenched interests and open windows of opportunity for transformative climate action.

The Politics of European Food Aid Policy from Delors to Von Der Leyen
This book provides a theoretically informed, empirically grounded account of the origin, expansion, and institutionalization of the EU's action against food poverty and severe material deprivation. In doing so, the analysis spans more than three decades, from the quasi-accidental onset of the first food aid program in the late 1980s under the Common Agricultural Policy to its current, puzzling, and contested consolidation as a narrow yet symbolic element of Social Europe's architecture. More precisely, the study offers an in-depth examination of the governance and implementation of European Food Aid Policy (EFAP) while exploring the political and institutional dynamics shaping its trajectory over time. Deploying primarily a historical institutionalist approach, the book addresses two key questions: Why did EFAP emerge despite the EU's limited role in anti-poverty policies? And how did it survive and consolidate, particularly during the 2008-2014 critical juncture, despite growing adverse conditions? By treating EFAP as a "least-likely case" for European integration, the research sheds light on broader political and institutional dynamics behind the making of Social Europe. This in-depth study will be of key interest to scholars, students, and practitioners in the field of EU social policy and policymaking, as well as, more broadly, in EU studies and comparative welfare state research.

Asylum and Migration
Asylum and Migration: Human Rights, Borders, and Humanitarian Commitments In an era of unprecedented displacement, escalating border controls, and growing anti-immigrant sentiment, 'Asylum and Migration: Human Rights, Borders, and Humanitarian Commitments' challenges the global community to reckon with the human cost of migration. This timely and urgent book dives into the heart of one of the most pressing issues of our time: the intersection of migration, human rights, and the international response to those fleeing conflict, persecution, and violence. Written with an unwavering commitment to human dignity, 'Asylum and Migration: Human Rights, Borders, and Humanitarian Commitments' provides a comprehensive examination of the global asylum system, exploring its historical origins, legal frameworks, and the moral imperatives that underpin it. From the 1951 Refugee Convention to the Global Compact on Refugees, this book meticulously explores the legal mechanisms designed to protect those on the move. Yet, it also lays bare the gaping shortcomings of these frameworks in the face of growing nationalism, increasing xenophobia, and bureaucratic inertia. More than just a critique of current migration policies, this book presents a passionate appeal for change. Drawing from powerful personal narratives, it amplifies the voices of those who have crossed borders in search of refuge, safety, and a better life. These stories of courage and resilience are the book's beating heart, reminding readers that at the core of migration lies a fundamental human right - the right to live with dignity, freedom, and hope. However, 'Asylum and Migration: Human Rights, Borders, and Humanitarian Commitments' is not just for scholars or policymakers. It is for every person who believes in the inherent worth of every human being. It calls on activists, advocates, and citizens alike to confront the moral and ethical dimensions of migration. It urges us to push past political rhetoric and fear-based narratives and instead embrace a vision of migration rooted in solidarity, compassion, and justice.Whether you are new to the subject or deeply engaged in the fight for migrant rights, this book offers crucial insights into the legal, political, and humanitarian aspects of migration. It offers a blueprint for how we can shift from a system of exclusion and oppression to one that affirms human rights, protects the most vulnerable, and creates pathways for justice, opportunity, and dignity for all. As you turn the pages of this thought-provoking work, you will be challenged to reconsider your understanding of migration, borders, and humanity. You will be inspired to take action, to stand in solidarity with those who are displaced, and to fight for a world where no one is left behind.

Hezbollah
Almost thirty years after its foundation, Lebanese Hezbollah remains an organization difficult to understand. An Islamist terrorist group dedicated to destroying Israel or the first Arab national Resistance to have ever defeated Tel-Aviv's troops, a patriotic and respectable party or a fascist network having managed to control all levers of Lebanese political life... what exactly is Hezbollah? How did it acquire such an important role in the Middle-Eastern game and in Lebanese politics? This book has three purposes. It first gives an articulated definition of Hezbollah, presenting a thorough history of the party, describing its well-built internal structure, and the large scope of its social and political action. It then explains the evolution of the party's mobilization. Finally, it illustrates another path, political but mainly identity-related, that of the Shiite community, today the main constituent of Lebanese society. Through a rigorous and richly documented study, mainly based on primary sources, amongst which hundreds of interviews with rank and file members, executives and officials of the party, and research material never examined before, the author unveils brand new aspects of this organization, thus completing, in a clear and efficient manner, our understanding of both the "Hezbollah phenomenon" and Lebanese politics of the last two decades.

Empowering China
The author enjoyed the exorbitant privilege of serving three times as Ambassador of Spain to China over a period of 25 years, between 1987 and 2013. He wondered about the US decisive role in empowering China, This book is the result of his review. The book starts with an in-depth analysis of China織s exponential economic development since 1978, adding a reflection on economic power as the crucial underpinning of military and geopolitical might. It underlines that when Nixon first visited China, in February 1972, he and Kissinger already understood that China would become a great power in a few decades and the ensuing risk "to be confronted, if our relations turn sour, with the most formidable enemy that has ever existed". The anticipated risk was taken to achieve short term benefits. Assessing the wisdom of this decision is the thrust of the book. Eight reasons are listed which might have given Nixon and Kissinger second thoughts when they decided to engage China. The contributions of the different US Presidents to the engagement and later containment of China are analyzed. A chapter is devoted to "Unfulfilled prophecies" China and democracy, and the elusive collapse of the Chinese economy. A European epilogue deals with the triangular relationship Europe - US - China. Will Europe be able to reach political union, engineering a renaissance from the ashes of 1945 and becoming again a great power? It is the existential question: to be or not to be. "The book also features a foreword by Javier Solana, former Secretary General of NATO and High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union."

Observed Correction
While many solutions have been proposed to combat misinformation on social media, most are either ineffective, expensive, or do not work at scale. What if social media users could help mitigate the misinformation they're also responsible for proliferating? In Observed Correction, Leticia Bode and Emily K. Vraga consider both the power of and the barriers to "observed correction"--users witnessing other users correct misinformation on social media. Bode and Vraga argue that when people view others directly and publicly correct misinformation on social media, their understanding of the topic becomes more accurate. Yet, while many members of the public value correction, Bode and Vraga find that they are often reluctant to correct misinformation they see on social media. This same reluctance to correct is seen among expert fact checkers and health communicators, compounded by the constraints of limited resources and competing priorities. To empower people to respond to misinformation, Bode and Vraga offer a set of practical recommendations for how observational correction can be implemented. In some cases, simple messages addressing concerns can increase users' willingness to respond to misinformation. In other cases, they argue that platforms will need to promote corrections and protect the correctors while experts can contribute by creating accessible curated evidence (ACE) to facilitate user corrections and build social norms around responding to misinformation. Including analysis of eleven experiments, seven surveys, and dozens of interviews with social media users, health professionals, fact checkers, and platform employees about their efforts to curb misinformation online, Bode and Vraga make the case that observed correction is an effective and scalable tool in the fight against bad content on the Internet.
Jemaah Islamiyah, Isis and Beyond
This book explores the evolution of violent extremism in Southeast Asia, charting its development from the 2001 discovery of the Jemaah Islamiyah plot linked to Al Qaeda in Singapore, to the rise of ISIS in the mid-2010s, and the emergence of new forms of extremism such as white supremacist, Hindu, and Buddhist extremism in the 2020s. It provides a comprehensive look at how these threats have shaped both regional and global security landscapes. The book brings together a series of policy-oriented commentaries that unpack the complexities of extremism, from the rise of terrorist organisations to the dynamics of radicalisation. It also examines key counter-extremism strategies, highlighting the roles of women, youth, and the importance of addressing the ideological narratives that fuel violent extremism. In the final sections, the book brings the conversation up to the present, analysing non-Islamist extremisms, social media's role in radicalisation, and the need for integrated, context-specific strategies to combat the evolving threat.
Taste for Change

This deep exploration of surrounding food systems, indigenous wisdom, economic structures, and politics is based on the premise that the ecological transition urgently needs to be accelerated to avoid the most dramatic consequences of the climate crisis.Academics, students, and activists from a wide array of disciplines will find A Taste for Change a dialogue worthy of careful consideration and an inspiring call to action.

Population Aging in Societal Context
This book offers an explanatory schema for comprehending aging in a societal context, focusing on the country of Nepal.Contributions to this book use an institutional contextual approach and a life course perspective to document and assess societal responses to the increase in the number of older adults in a specific country. This emerging age group entails the development of new and modified social institutions, new and modified cultural norms, and the reallocation of social resources within a given country. The study represents a means to understand the status and needs of older adults systematically and to orient policies and programs intended to address the increase in the older population. It can be applied to countries grappling with similar challenges of rapid population aging and significant social change.A pioneering effort in understanding aging as a social process embedded in social, economic, cultural, and life course contexts, this book fills a gap in Asian Studies, Social Policy, and Population Studies.
