Changing Law and Contractual Relations Under Covid-19
COVID-19 has changed not only human lives since the beginning of the year 2020, but systems of human society as well. Legal measures have been employed in every country to mandate the state's control of human behavior in order to stop the pandemic. But the mode of legal control has differed by country, showing different results in terms of constraining the spread of infection. While the behavioral restrictions continue, the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic have been causing another catastrophe, particularly in the most vulnerable sectors of each society. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are typical representatives of such vulnerable groups, compelled to assume the economic burdens of the pandemic that have been shifted from the larger economic actors that hold the advantage in contractual negotiations. Statistical data on infection status have revealed a great gap between countries, such as European nations reaching the level of several thousand deaths per one hundred thousand population, while most Asian countries have maintained a level of one or two digits. Even though COVID-19 affects the whole world, the redistribution of risks in the pandemic is a goal to be pursued in the socio-cultural context of each society. This book explores the law and social changes in Asian countries under the impact of COVID-19, with a particular focus on the social relations surrounding the SMEs. These form the center of contractual relations between various socio-economic actors and at the same time, are a direct counterpart of the governmental SME policies, peculiar to Asian interventionist governments. A comparative approach is taken, using the results of interview surveys based on structured questions conducted via research collaboration between the contributors from Japan as well as other Asian countries. A comparative analysis of the risk redistribution in the pandemic between countries that share similar preconditions is still possibleand meaningful. The authors of this book hold the view that Asian countries have sufficient bases for international comparison, particularly on the risk reallocation in the SME sector, given the relatively well-controlled level of infection, presumably due to the similarity of cooperative social culture. Another basis for comparison is the similarity of the laws surrounding the business operation of SMEs since normal times, which makes it feasible to compare the difference in the pandemic. What risks should be reallocated between whom, and how?

Judicial Convergence and Fragmentation in International Human Rights Law
This book provides an innovative analysis of the complex issue of judicial convergence and fragmentation in international human rights law, moving the conversation forward from the assessment of the two phenomena and investigating their triggering factors. The core of the UN Women Peace and Security Agenda is stopping conflict-related sexual violence against women. Yet, with over two decades of grappling with conflict-related sexual violence and its legacies, there is only passing mention of the potential and obvious outcomes of sexual violence: pregnancy, abortion, forced maternity. What do we know about children conceived through acts of sexual abuse? What are their life chances? How do they exist with their mothers and within their families? In this collection we hear from the leading researchers and practitioners from around the globe, each of whom has spent decades working with women who survived wartime rape and with their children who were the result of that violence. This ground-breaking collection explores the life cycles of children born of wartime rape across time and space. Effectively Countering Terrorism
Since September 11, 2001, the pressure on Al Qaeda has increased. Training sanctuaries and havens have been eliminated, and numerous fighters of the organisation have been killed, captured or are in hiding. Today, Al Qaeda can be understood -- according to many analysts -- much more as an ideological platform than an operative terror organisation: Bin Laden and al-Zawahiri cannot provide tactical leadership. But they pose a new, more virtual threat insofar as recruitment, training and indoctrination, as well as propaganda, have moved to small cell operations in virtually every country, under the Al Qaeda ideological banner. The stark fact is that the execution of the global war on terrorism has not decreased international terrorism directed against the West. In view of this apparent failure of present strategies, the editors have sought the opinions of eight distinguished scholars and experts in the field to reflect on the following questions: What additional actions are required in counter-terrorism policy to reverse the increase in terror-directed activities? What are the main shortcomings of current policy initiatives? And, what policy recommendations can they make as a result of recent developments in counter-terrorism theory and new data on terror perpetrators and incidents? In 1933 and 1934, Thomas Minehan, a young sociologist at the University of Minnesota, joined the ranks of a roving army of 250,000 boys and girls torn from their homes during the Great Depression. Disguised in old clothes, he hopped freight trains crisscrossing six midwestern states. While undercover, Minehan associated on terms of social equality with several thousand transients, collecting five hundred life histories of the young migrants. The result was a vivid and intimate portrayal of a harrowing existence, one in which young people suffered some of the deadliest blows of the economic disaster. Boy and Girl Tramps of America reveals the poignant experiences of American youth who were sent out on the road by grinding poverty, shattered family relationships, and financially strapped schools that locked their doors. For these young people, danger was a constant companion that could turn deadly in an instant. The book documents the hunger and hardships these youth faced, capturing an appalling spectacle and social problem in America's history before any effort was made to meet the problem on a nationwide basis by the federal government. The 99 Percent Economy
We live in a time of crises - economic turmoil, workplace disempowerment, unresponsive government, environmental degradation, social disintegration, and international rivalry. In The 99 Percent Economy, Paul S. Adler, a leading expert on business management, argues that these crises are destined to deepen unless we radically transform our economy. The Myth of Left and Right

The most generic challenge faced by many international courts is the level of obedience by their member states. The EACJ is not an island to this common reflection. Essentially, international courts are influential only when their decisions are easily complied with and executed by member states. If not, as with the case of the EACJ, then, such an international court will always be on the brink of being toothless and ineffective. At the end of each reference, the EACJ delivers a judgment. It also issues interim orders carrying a status similar to that of a court judgment. Member States as well as the Council are bound to implement EACJ judgments without delay. But there are no established mechanisms to ensure compliance in the event that a state refuses to implement a decision against it. Since 2005 the EACJ has dealt with more than 190 matters. What is intriguing in those judgments is tracking the extent to which they have been met with compliance. Member States have not been sanctioned when they have failed to comply with the EACJ's decisions. It is a matter of fact and a matter of principle that the nature of EACJ judgments is declaratory, and this tends to attract noncompliance. The best the Court can offer is to declare violations of the law, give orders for injunctive relief, and award costs to the successful applicants. The costs order depends on the nature of the case. Public interest cases do not attract costs orders.

The Quality of the Urban Road Transportation System in Port Harcourt

It does so by defining transportation as the means of conveying, conveyance or been conveyed from one place to another and it involves humans, animals and objects. It also addresses all necessary infrastructures that must be functional to make the transport system in the study area efficient. Excessive traffic demand is choking the study area even when car ownership is moderate due to poor city structure and narrow roads. Further, increased traffic demand is expected in the study area by the year 2030. The study in achieving its goal employed the mixed method design and the case study method, whereby both qualitative and quantitative research components were used in the data analysis and the central point of the findings is that the quality of road transport service in the study area is declining despite the recent development in the transportation sector. Hence, this study, advocates for more relevant and vital transportation infrastructures that will aid the efficiency of urban road transport services in Port Harcourt Metropolis and also the culture of maintenance should be inculcated to ensure its durability. The study concludes that quality of urban road transportation system in Port Harcourt Metropolis City will increase to a very high level and will in turn increase the economic state of the city if all relevant transport infrastructures and policies are put in place both by the state and federal government in Nigeria.
