In Between the Seas, Deborah Paci takes a comparative view of islandness in island identities through case studies of islands in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. These case studies primarily include, in the Baltic case, the ?land Islands, Gotland, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Ruhnu; and in the Mediterranean case, Sicily, Malta, Sardinia and Corsica. Examining multiple sites of these islands' identities such as history, environmental concerns and governance systems, this book provides a historical perspective into the relations between islands and the larger geopolitical regions around them, as well as historicizing 'insularist' rhetoric deployed by pro-independence groups within them. Paci examines the changing role and increasing political importance of islands in the European Union against the history of island insularity and offers a significant contribution to the wider field of island studies.

Imperium
In mid-1947, the authoritarian Right was at its absolute nadir, crushed in the pincers of liberal democracy and communism. But Francis Parker Yockey dreamed of its rebirth. First, the Right needed a Das Kapital, then a Communist Manifesto, then a militant political party. Thus Yockey withdrew to Brittas Bay, Ireland, one of the few places in Europe untouched by the most destructive war in history. There, in a blaze of inspiration, he wrote Imperium. Manipulating Authoritarian Citizenship

How States Think

Much of international relations theory assumes that they are. But many scholars believe that political leaders rarely act rationally. Trading with Pariahs
The past few decades have witnessed a proliferation of economic sanctions, yet there seem to be few examples of sanctions meeting sender states' goals. Under what conditions do sanctions fail to change the behavior of so-called international "pariah states," countries who violate various international norms? This book examines the impact of economic sanctions on target states' trading relationships through social network analysis, a method that has rarely been applied to the study of sanctions. Drawing on UN Comtrade data, Trading with Pariahs: Trade Networks and the Failure of Economic Sanctions shows that the imposition of sanctions can drastically change some states' trading networks, as states either find new trading partners (in the case of North Korea) or feel the sting of the sanctions from key trading partners (like Iran). Trading networks (such as Myanmar's) remain relatively stable over time as key trading partners refuse to impose sanctions. Through the theory of weaponized interdependence, Keith A. Preble and Charmaine N. Willis argue that the success or failure of sanctions to change target states' behavior depends on who imposes the sanctions. Sanctions imposed by the "right" sender states can be successful but also cannot rely solely on policies of isolation to achieve the goals of the sanctions.

Women and the Holy City
Jerusalem's Temple Mount/al-Haram al-Sharif is the holiest place in the world for Jews, the third holiest place for Muslims and a constant feature in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Yet the gendered dimensions of inter-communal disputes over sacred space in Jerusalem, as well as in other holy places around the world, have been largely neglected, as have women's roles in these site-specific conflicts. An implicit association of women with peaceful politics and syncretic religious practices has obscured the fact that women are often key actors in inter-communal contestation of holy places. This study looks to three contemporary women's movements in and around Jerusalem's Sacred Esplanade: Women for the Temple - a Jewish Orthodox movement for access to Temple Mount; The Murabitat - Muslim women activists devoted to the protection of Al-Aqsa Mosque from Jewish claims; and Women of the Wall - a Jewish feminist mobilization against restrictive gender regulations at the Western Wall. Lihi Ben-Shitrit demonstrates how attention to gender and to women's engagement in conflict over sacred places is essential for understanding what makes contested sacred sites increasingly 'indivisible' for parties in the inter-communal context.

CONTENT OF THE BOOK Human history does not proceed like a mechanical construct, the world is too complex for that. And yet, a certain direction and consistency in historical development become visible. Certain decisions made in 1919 by the victorious powers of the First World War led to a new order in the world. We need to know the principles of the shaping of power and domination that underpinned the decisions of that time in order to be able to classify today's events, as well as the actions of political decision-makers. This is the only way to succeed in recognizing a structure in the supposed chaos around us. We want to serve this learning from history with our book. The insights gained then ask us to take a close look again and again when political decisions are made. The consequences must be borne not only by us, but even more so by the future inhabitants of this planet. This book aims to use critical events to show how this process of European integration proceeded and what important results it has led to. The relationship between France and Germany after the Second World War and since the reunification of Germany and Europe after 1990 is the focus of our analysis. We will show how the relationship between the two economically and politically most important states in Europe, with the EU as the decisive shaping framework, has developed. We are paying particular attention to the role of the United States as the actor that has decisively shaped the creation process and consequently the political structures, as well as the geopolitical role of the EU.
Creating the Desired Citizen
For decades after the declaration of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the Turkish state promoted the idea of a desired citizen. The Kemalist state treated these citizens as superior, with full rights; but the 'others', those outside this desired citizenship, were either tolerated or considered undesirable citizens. And this caused the marginalization of ethnic and religious minorities, religious Muslims and leftists alike. In this book, Ihsan Yilmaz shows how historical traumas, victimhood, insecurities, anxieties, fears and siege mentality have negatively impacted on and radicalised the nation-building projects of the two competing hegemonic ideologies/regimes (those of Ataturk and Erdogan) and their treatment of majority and minority ethnic, religious and political groups. Yilmaz reveals the significant degree of overlap between the desired, undesired citizen and tolerated citizen categories of these two regimes, showing how both regimes aimed to create a perception of a homogenous Turkish nation.

But the leading theory of power transitions between a declining hegemon and a rising rival is based exclusively on European examples, such as the Peloponnesian War, as chronicled by Thucydides, as well as the rise of Germany under Bismarck and the Anglo-German rivalry of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What lessons does East Asian history offer, for both the power transitions debate and the future of U.S.-China relations? Examining the rise and fall of East Asian powers over 1,500 years, Beyond Power Transitions offers a new perspective on the forces that shape war and peace. Xinru Ma and David C. Kang argue that focusing on the East Asian experience underscores domestic risks and constraints on great powers, not relative rise and decline in international competition. They find that almost every regime transition before the twentieth century was instigated by internal challenges and even the exceptions deviated markedly from the predictions of power transition theory. Instead, East Asia was stable for a remarkably long time despite massive power differences because of common understandings about countries' relative status. Looking at Kurdish-state relations through events taking place across remote, rural and urban areas in Kurdistan, Allan Hassaniyan analyses nationalist as well as non-nationalist aspects of Kurdish politics and history, reading the evolution of Kurdish nationalism through analysing crossborder Kurdish interaction. Paying particular attention to movement mobilisation and different aspects of the collective actions and insurgency deployed by actors, civil society organisations and the political parties of Iranian Kurds during different phases of the movement, Hassaniyan demonstrates how the ethnonationalist movement of the Iranian Kurds was a product of a discriminatory policy pursued by changing Iranian regimes toward non-Persian and non-Shiite communities in the country, particularly in the second half of the twentieth century.

Ghana's Foreign Policy: Kwame Nkrumah's Normative Legacy and Pan-Africanism examines Ghana's foreign policy in the post-independence era, focusing on the enduring legacy of Kwame Nkrumah. This book also analyzes the complexity of post-independence foreign policy decision making and the influence of the post-colonial narrative during the Cold War. In this study, Charles Asante argues that the significance and continuity of Nkrumah's legacy is often attributed to his pan-Africanist leadership on the African continent, fervently articulating an independent African foreign policy. Leaders like Nkrumah, considered themselves as the redeemers of Africa's political and economic vulnerability from its colonial experiences. Asante finds that, in contrast to the positive experience associated with his independence movement for Ghana, Nkrumah could not build the same kind of vision, engagement, and networks among other African nationalist leaders necessary for successful promotion of a Pan-African region. Despite Nkrumah's own foreign policy failures in the Congo, the United States of Africa project, and his sudden overthrow in 1966, Nkrumah's Pan-African vision is still promoted as an important foreign policy objective by Ghana's politicians, public servants, military, and academics.

What lessons does East Asian history offer, for both the power transitions debate and the future of U.S.-China relations? Examining the rise and fall of East Asian powers over 1,500 years, Beyond Power Transitions offers a new perspective on the forces that shape war and peace. Xinru Ma and David C. Kang argue that focusing on the East Asian experience underscores domestic risks and constraints on great powers, not relative rise and decline in international competition. They find that almost every regime transition before the twentieth century was instigated by internal challenges and even the exceptions deviated markedly from the predictions of power transition theory. The aim of this book is to discuss the process of building the professional identity of basic education workers, identifying their relationship with schools and national education.
