A World Parliament

Jo,Leinen  著
Ingram 出版
2024/08/05 出版

For the first time in history, all people worldwide are linked together in a shared civilization that spans the entire Earth. Humanity now has a common destiny. Global challenges such as war, poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental destruction are overwhelming nation-states and today's international institutions. Even the best policies are futile if there are no appropriate political structures in place to implement them. Autocracy and nationalism further undermine global collaboration. But the desire for freedom and change is unabated.Following the emergence of democracy in ancient times and its spread to modern states from the 18th century onwards, a third democratic transformation is imminent: expanding democracy to the global scale. Achieving a peaceful, just and sustainable world requires an evolutionary leap forward. The creation of a democratic world parliament is the centrepiece of this project. This book explores the history, relevance and implementation of this monumental idea. The first part explores the philosophical foundations of cosmopolitanism and a world parliament since ancient times. It fills a gap in the literature by tracing the history of the idea and of the attempts to bring it about from the French Revolution to the present day. In this regard, the book also serves as a comprehensive reference. The second part sets the issue in the context of global challenges such as climate change and planetary boundaries, the management of public goods, the pandemic threat, the stability of the financial system, combating tax evasion, terrorism and organized crime, disarmament, and protecting human rights. The construction of global democracy also plays a decisive role in combating hunger, poverty and inequality and in global water policy. Rapid developments in the fields of bio- and nanotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence are giving rise to fundamental questions that humanity is not prepared for. There is an overarching narrative that exposes the dysfunctions and deficiencies of the international system. At the same time, the alternative of a democratic world order and its underlying principles is presented with increasing depth. The authors stress that there is a right to democracy that applies not only to the national but also to the global level. Against the backdrop of the power structures of the transnational elite, the book argues for the implementation of a new global social contract . Finally, it outlines the contours of a new global enlightenment as well as the emergence of planetary consciousness and global solidarity. The third part discusses pathways, drivers and conditions for a transition to global democracy and outlines elements of a future global constitution. The second edition reflects significant developments since the original publication, in particular the COVID-19 pandemic, autocratization, and the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. The second edition incorporates linguistic improvements, updated content, extensive revisions, and additions throughout the book, expanding its size by approximately one fifth.

The Once and Future World Order

Basic Books 出版
2024/08/04 出版

The epic story of the past, present, and future of world order, revealing how the decline of the West may be a good thing for the world. Since the dawn of the twenty-first century, the West has been in crisis. Social unrest, political polarization, and the rise of other great powers--especially China--threaten to unravel today's Western-led world order. Many fear this would lead to global chaos. But the West has never had a monopoly on order. Surveying five thousand years of global history, political scientist Amitav Acharya reveals that world order--the political architecture enabling cooperation and peace among nations--existed long before the rise of the West. Moving from ancient Sumer, India, Greece, and Mesoamerica, through medieval caliphates and Eurasian empires into the present, Acharya shows that humanitarian values, economic interdependence, and rules of inter-state conduct emerged across the globe over millennia. History suggests order will endure even as the West retreats. In fact, the end of Western dominance offers us the opportunity to build a better world, where non-Western nations find more voice, power, and prosperity. Instead of fearing the future, the West should learn from history and cooperate with the Rest to forge a more equitable order. This is the definitive account of how world order evolved and why it will survive the decline of the West.

Politics in an Island State

Ingram 出版
2024/08/02 出版

Jamaica ismost well-known for its popular culture, crime and violence. Government, thestate, is viewed as a malign force. In Politics in an Island State notedanthropologist Diane Austin-Broos brings an alternative view of Jamaica, itsculture and governance. This history of Jamaica, and more pointedly, thehistory of politics in Jamaica, is brilliantly told through the biography ofWills O. Isaacs. Never the leader of his party - the People's National Party -Wills was active in politics from the 1930s and was nonetheless a prominent andnotorious figure. Informativeand entertaining, this biography of a "second-tier" political leader departsfrom the usual heroic style and addresses the challenges of a fledgling socialdemocracy in the mid-twentieth century. Decolonization and the decline ofsugar, the Great Depression and two world wars frame the challenges of thetime. Flanked by rural-to-urban migration, unemployment and industrialization, Jamaica'sstruggles into the twenty-first century and the conduct of government - thesuccesses, failures and foibles - are presented and viewed through a morenuanced lens. Leaders shape history, though they seldom dictate itsdirection. Viewing history through their eyes affords a dynamic account of thestructures and events that underpin a society's development. Politics in an Island State willfind a ready audience with readers generally interested in the Caribbean, buteven more so with sages - both academic and unconventional - of anthropology, history, foreign affairs, sociology, political science, development studies andpolitical economy.

More People, Fewer States

Ingram 出版
2024/08/01 出版

The long-term development of political systems over extended time periods has been somewhat neglected. More People, Fewer States examines world history through population explosion and empire size changes across 5000 years of socio-technological development, revealing three distinct phases: Runner, Rider, and Engineer empires. A careful comparative approach reveals that Old Egypt, Achaemenid, Caliphate, Mongol, and Britain each achieved remarkable yet rarely acknowledged expansions, leading to their successive record empire sizes. If identified past trends persist, a potential single world state could emerge by 4600, although environmental concerns may intervene. Focusing on population dynamics and area metrics of states, this book provides a novel framework for evaluating the growth, structure, and decline of empires. It not only illuminates ancient historical space but also ventures into future projections, making it an essential read for scholars interested in the long-term evolution of political systems.

Rising China's Soft Power in Southeast Asia

Ingram 出版
2024/07/31 出版

The book addresses the issues of China's soft power in Southeast Asia during the rise of China. This soft power includes Chinese language education and popular culture. With regard to Chinese education, prior to the rise of China, Chinese schools were catered to mainly overseas Chinese children. Non-Chinese seldom received Chinese education. However, the rise of China and the export of Confucius Institutes (CIs) changed the landscape as CIs are meant for the non-Chinese population as well. China's educational soft power penetrated the larger non-Chinese community, making Chinese soft power more effective. Chinese popular culture has also infiltrated the non-Chinese population. Various chapters in this book show that rising China's soft power in Southeast Asia has grown quite significantly, particularly in terms of the Chinese language and Chinese popular culture. Nevertheless, its popularity still lags behind American soft power. The Chinese language is still not as popular as the English language. The same could also be said for Chinese popular culture. The growth of China's soft power faces tremendous challenges in the Southeast Asian region. Its further growth would depend on China's continuous economic power and cordial relations with the Southeast Asian countries.

How Viktor Orb獺n Plays to Win

Ingram 出版
2024/07/29 出版

With Brexit complete, the European Union unbalanced, and populist national conservatism on the march across the continent, winds of rebellion continue to blow from Central Europe, where Hungary's dynamic leader Viktor Orb獺n has been building a political alternative to neoliberal statism. Prime Minister of Hungary from 1998 to 2002, Orb獺n's continuation in power since 2010 has marked a real European turning point as he transcends conventional divisions. He is an advocate of European unity, but a nemesis of the Brussels superstate. He is both democratic and illiberal, rigorous in economics, yet opposed to global free trade, a defender of the Christian West while eager to engage with China, Russia, and Iran. What will Orb獺n's legacy be in a Europe that he continues not merely to confound, but to lead? Thibaud Gibelin explores the recent trends to explain what is happening not only in Central Europe but across Europe today and sheds light on one of the most criticized - and yet most experienced - statesmen on the European scene.

Revolting Subjects

Imogen,Tyler  著
Ingram 出版
2024/07/29 出版

Revolting Subjects is a groundbreaking account of social abjection in contemporary Britain, exploring how particular groups of people are figured as revolting and how they in turn revolt against their abject subjectification. The book utilizes a number of high-profile and in-depth case studies - including 'chavs', asylum seekers, Gypsies and Travellers, and the 2011 London riots - to examine the ways in which individuals negotiate restrictive neoliberal ideologies of selfhood. In doing so, Tyler argues for a deeper psychosocial understanding of the role of representational forms in producing marginality, social exclusion and injustice, whilst also detailing how stigmatization and scapegoating are resisted through a variety of aesthetic and political strategies.Imaginative and original, Revolting Subjects introduces a range of new insights into neoliberal societies, and will be essential reading for those concerned about widening inequalities, growing social unrest and social justice in the wider global context.

The Olavo de Carvalho Reader

Ingram 出版
2024/07/29 出版

The Olavo de Carvalho Reader, a far-reaching selection of philosophical essays by the celebrated Brazilian philosopher available for the first time in English, presents indispensable writings that have generated an intellectual revival in Brazil and beyond. Following Carvalho's definition of philosophy as the "search for unity of knowledge in the unity of consciousness, and vice-versa," it lays out the historical roots of the current cultural crisis in the West-both in the phenomenon he called "cognitive parallax" and then in the advent of the "revolutionary mind." Averse to utopian thinking, Carvalho's analyses are often responses to events that have shaped the history of ideas and their factual consequences. His approach seeks truth and expresses reality as Carvalho sees it, resisting pressure to conform to the collective and reaffirming the power of individual consciousness. In writings from a period of over three decades, this edition introduces the reader to one of the greatest philosophers of our time.

World of the Right

Ingram 出版
2024/07/29 出版

The contemporary radical Right is not merely a series of nationalist projects but a global phenomenon. This book shows how radical conservative thinkers have developed long-term counter-hegemonic strategies that challenge prevailing social and political orders both nationally and internationally. At the heart of this ideological project is a critique of liberal globalisation that seeks to mobilise transversal alliances against a common enemy: the 'New Class' of global managerial elites who are accused of undermining national sovereignty, traditional values, and cultures. 'World of the Right' argues that while the radical Right is far from a unified political movement, its calls for sovereignty, civilisational orders, and multipolarity enable complex, strategic convergences with illiberal states such as China and Russia, as well as states and people in the Global South. The potential consequences for the future of the liberal world order are profound and wide-ranging.

Domestic violence against women

Ingram 出版
2024/07/28 出版

This research is structured by analysing what the two main Public Health journals say, after ten years since the enactment of Law No. 11.340 of 2006 (Maria da Penha Law/LMP). This was followed by a literature review, structuring and summarising the main results. This typology made it possible to reflect on advances, challenges and the context of knowledge production in the face of the effective implementation of the MPL. The results of this discussion made me reflect on who this woman is? What does she want? What can she do? In this context, the second writing takes place. Through the mapping of a foreigner in public health, I propose reterritorialisation as a possible path after episodes of violence. I build my toolbox as a public health researcher as a way of structuring my trajectory. The cartographic narrative shows the displacement from one territory to another, the affectations of some references that constitute a way of looking at the context of domestic violence against women and overcoming it.

The data analyzed reveals that promoting the improvement of individuals' living conditions through the use of intangible assets, especially the cultural variable, is a development strategy that transcends the theoretical field and allows us to identify a direct relationship between the adoption of public policies linked to the Creative Economy and the improvement of the population's living conditions.

Contemporary Japanese Politics and Anxiety Over Governance

Routledge 出版
2024/07/26 出版

This book is an integrated examination of Japanese politics in the first two decades of the 21st century, as viewed from the perspective of "anxiety over governance."By empirically highlighting the social-environmental, political environmental, and sociocultural changes that have underlined the long-term political participation and voting behavior of Japanese citizens, the book provides deep insight into how modern democracies function and are perceived in post-industrial societies and reveals the specific processes by which Japanese politics have changed. Additionally, the book provides an analysis of the decline in social capital, the shrinking variety of political parties, and the intermingling of Asian values with liberal democratic values. By examining anxiety over governance, the chapters explore the links between anxiety and Japanese political behavior, revealing that, despite the high regard for democratic politics, Japanese citizens generally experienced a high level of anxiety and negative evaluation of the government, including countermeasures against COVID-19.Featuring surveys of Japanese political behavior over a period of more than 40 years, this book will be valuable reading for students and scholars of Japanese Politics, Political Behavior, and Psychology. The introduction, chapter 4 and chapter 5 of this book are freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDFs at http: //www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.

Review of Computer Networks

Ingram 出版
2024/07/26 出版

The use of computer networks has grown a lot in recent years, and organizations and institutions have started to establish networks. Each computer network must be designed and implemented according to the conditions and policies of each organization. In fact, computer networks provide the necessary infrastructure to share resources in the organization. If these infrastructures are not designed correctly, different problems will occur when using the network and a lot of money must be spent to maintain the network and adapt it to the desired needs. In general, before the physical design of a computer network, the needs must be identified and analyzed first, for example, why do we intend to create a network in a library and what services should this network provide. What actions should be taken to provide the services and services desired by the majority of users. Issues such as the desired protocol to use the network, network speed, and most importantly network security issues, each of these should be carefully examined. It has been tried, after presenting the basic definitions, to provide material about its practical applications, to help in better decision making.

Breckinridge Long, American Eichmann

Neil,Rolde  著
Ingram 出版
2024/07/26 出版

Students of mid-twentieth-century American political and diplomatic history remember Breckinridge Long as a well-connected and influential force, particularly during the Roosevelt years. Those with a particular concern for the tragically inadequate American efforts to rescue victims of the Holocaust point to Long as a central figure in resisting and obstructing those efforts. He has been characterized as an anti-Semite, a xenophobe, and alternatively as an anti-communist who opposed immigration out of fear of communist infiltration. Interesting historical figures are, regretfully, often reduced to single dimensions, and the complexity of their lives and motivations are lost. In this erudite, thoughtful and well-written biography, Neil Rolde has fleshed out a multidimensional portrait of this gifted, influential and flawed public figure, traced his extraordinary career, and explored a range of theories as to Long's motivations. In so doing, Rolde has provided a wealth of information not only about Long but also about this critical and troubled chapter in modern American political and diplomatic history. -David M. As the European Union undergoes a major, self-proclaimed democratic exercise the Conference on the Future of Europe and approaches Treaty change, this volume offers a new model of citizen participation to address Europe's long-standing democracy challenge, and respond to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Proposed are a set of democratic innovations, ranging from citizens assemblies to regulatory gaming to citizens initiatives and lobbying, which are complementary, not antagonistic, to existing representative democracy across the European continent. These innovations are emerging bottom-up across the continent and getting traction at local, national and EU level in a new era powered by technology. This book brings together academics as well as practitioners to give a forward-looking, holistic view of the realities of EU citizen participation across the spectrum of participatory opportunities. They all converge in arguing that, after many years of proven experimentation, the EU must institutionalize supranational, participative and deliberative, democratic channels to complement representative democracy and each other, and ultimately improve the effectiveness of EU citizen participation. While this institutional approach will not magically treat the EU democratic malaise, it should make the system more intelligible, accessible, and ultimately responsive to citizen demand without necessarily undertaking Treaty reform. The attempt to harness citizen participation to help address the current EU crisis needs the type of multi-faceted approach presented in this book. One that recognises the potential of existing and new democratic mechanisms, and also, importantly, the links between different instruments of citizen participation to improve the overall quality of EU's democratic system

Myanmar's Digital Coup

Palgrave M 出版
2024/07/25 出版

This book analyses how technologies have been used by both the military junta and resistance movement in Myanmar's digital coup to control information and the transfer of funds and to pursue accountability. They have been used to pressure and mobilise external actors and the book critically assesses international responses ranging from the United Nations, ASEAN, individual countries, activist groups, donors and international businesses. Contact with the military has been criticised as recognising and legitimising the regime and individual firms have come under pressure to exit. The authors argue that the National Unity Government overestimates the significance of foreign recognition and activists overestimate the influence of international responses on military behaviour. They suggest external actors change from judging and excoriating the responses of the international community and focus on how foreign governments, businesses or organisations can support and strengthen Myanmar society. If change in Myanmar is to come it will be those that have remained, not those that have left, that will bring it about.

Subversion 2.0

Ingram 出版
2024/07/25 出版

Why are conspiracy theories, extremist rhetoric, and acts of antagonism by fringe elements of society so much more visible today than in years past? The Capitol Insurrection of January 6, 2021, and the surge of medical skepticism during the global COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the challenge of extreme rhetoric in global society, with increasing attention paid to the enabling role of the Internet. But beyond the ways in which the Internet allows for connection, how do fringe ideas travel into the mainstream to become more significant movements? In Subversion 2.0, Christopher Whyte describes the transformation of societal subversion in the digital age. Whyte makes the case that "leaderlessness"--characterized by an evolving and uneven feedback loop linking fringe spaces to mainstream elite rhetoric and popular discourse--has emerged in recent years as the default format of subversive activity. Through case explorations and novel data, Whyte shows how extreme narratives that originate in conspiratorial, restrictive virtual spaces are rapidly filtered into mainstream settings due to a series of socio-technological conditions present in the Web 2.0 era. As a result, fringe narratives and symbols often become the lens through which social and political elites interpret information that they then spread through public speech, which is projected back to subversive spaces and used to perpetuate fringe narratives. By examining the uneven feedback loop of leaderlessness, Whyte argues that social Internet platforms act as a vehicle for transmitting and amplifying extreme rhetoric but often fail to moderate extremism in turn. He ultimately shows how societal subversion, an activity that is about degrading existing power structures without directly attacking them, has taken on a new, dynamic form in the digital age.

Living with Hard Times

Marco,Giugni  著
Ingram 出版
2024/07/25 出版

Living with Hard Times: Europeans in the Great Recession provides a new, comprehensive comparative study of the socio-political effects of the Great Recession amongst European citizens. It presents a detailed investigation of heterogeneity in the population within countries with respect to how citizens made sense of the crisis and how this situation impacted their livelihoods, outlooks and political engagement. Marco Giugni and Maria Grasso analyse citizens' experiences during the economic crisis, the decline of living standards and deprivation by structural location as well as differences in economic outlooks. They also examine the ways in which citizens from different social groups were resilient to the effects of the economic crisis. Moreover, they show how social support and social capital emerging from social relations contributed to resilience in the face of the crisis. This book explores citizen attitudes towards various welfare policies and towards immigration, and it shows how support for populist parties is differentiated within the population. Finally, Living with Hard Times looks at the impact of the crisis on different types of political action challenging incumbent governments and protesting against austerity policies

The Art of State Persuasion

Ingram 出版
2024/07/25 出版

Why do nations actively publicize previously overlooked disputes? And why does this domestic mobilization sometimes fail to result in aggressive policy measures? The Art of State Persuasion delves into China's strategic use of state propaganda during crucial crisis events, particularly focusing on border disputes. Frances Wang aims to explain the diverse strategies employed in Chinese state media, analyzing why certain disputes are amplified while others are downplayed. This variation, as proposed, is contingent on the degree of alignment between Chinese state policy and public opinion. When public sentiment is more moderate than the state's foreign policy objectives, the government initiates a "mobilization campaign." Conversely, if public opinion is more hawkish than state policy, the authorities deploy a "pacification campaign" to mollify public sentiment. Through a comprehensive examination of medium-N and case-study analyses, Wang elucidates these arguments. The research incorporates extensive textual analyses of media reports, interviews with officials and journalists, and archival data. The book also illuminates the mechanics of mobilization and pacification media campaigns, enabling policy makers to distinguish varying state foreign policy intentions. This book not only acknowledges the significance of public opinion but also illustrates how fluctuating public sentiment is delicately managed by the state through diverse discursive tactics. By highlighting the existence and relevance of pacification campaigns, The Art of State Persuasion enhances our understanding of propaganda, and challenges the traditional view of China's propaganda as uniformly aggressive, bringing to light a more nuanced picture especially in the domain of foreign policy.

Patriarchy in Practice

Ingram 出版
2024/07/23 出版

This collection covers a diverse and multi-disciplinary range of topics on how masculinities might be re-imagined outside of patriarchal power structures. Crucially, the book highlights the lived complexity of both patriarchies and masculinities as plural and situated, exploring questions of how they are constructed, negotiated and re-negotiated in daily practice; of how performative regimes interact, contradict and overlap with each other across a range of contexts. Contributors engage with theoretical frameworks engaging with feminist theory, contemporary politics of gender, bodies and marginalised experiences of masculinites. Global case studies are wide-ranging and include analysis of masculinity among communities such as drag artists, InCels and e-sports enthusiasts, as well as in the context of the body, for instance in relation to alcoholism and physical disability. In an era of resurgence of typically hegemonic patriarchal figures in the form of 'strong men' leadership, this book seeks to uncover what an alternative vision of masculinity could look like - one that is firmly rooted in a gender equality and feminist discourse.

The Israeli/Palestinian Conflict

Ingram 出版
2024/07/23 出版

The Israeli/Palestinian conflict did not begin on October 7, 2023. It has been ongoing for over a hundred years. It started with the birth of Zionism. Zionism was born in re- sponse to an especially severe attack on Russian Jews in 1881. The Zionist solution envisioned the creation of an independent Jewish state in Palestine that would require the expulsion of the indigenous population. The Zionists were secular European Jews and knew that their goal could only be realized through violence. The Zionist state they envisioned was patterned after the European powers of their day. The Zionist movement has always been backed by a major world power (and the Western world, in general)-first by Great Britain and then by the United States which were both seeking their own strategic goals without any real concern for the Jewish people.

Violence at Home or Abroad

Ruolin,Su  著
Palgrave M 出版
2024/07/23 出版

From the civil wars in Colombia, Nepal, and Syria, to the revolutions in Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan, and the fervent uprisings of the Arab Spring, recent decades have vividly demonstrated that rebellion is in the air. In this groundbreaking study, Ruolin Su delves into the intricate dynamics of violent policy choices made by rebel leaders amid domestic turmoil. How does a history of rebellion shape a leader's inclination towards violence when they ascend to power? When do these leaders turn to violence abroad, and to what extent does it bolster their hold on power at home? This book is an indispensable resource for political scientists and scholars dedicated to understanding the complexities of post-rebellion states and international security.

Russia and the Gcc

Ingram 出版
2024/07/23 出版

In recent decades Russia has played an increasingly active role in the Middle East as states within the region continue to diversify their relations with major external powers. Yet the role of specific Russian regions, especially those that share an 'Islamic identity' with the GCC has been overlooked. In this book Diana Galeeva examines the relations between the Gulf States and Russia from the Soviet era to the present day. Using the Republic of Tatarstan, one of Russia's Muslim polities as a case study, Galeeva demonstrates the emergence of relations between modern Tatarstan and the GCC States, evolving from concerns with economic survival to a rising paradiplomacy reliant on shared Islamic identities. Having conducted fieldwork in the Muslim Republics of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan and Dagestan, the book includes interviews with high-ranking political figures, heads of religious organisations and academics. Moving beyond solely economic and geopolitical considerations, the research in this book sheds light on the increasingly important role that culture and shared Islamic identity play in paradiplomacy efforts.

The Global Crisis

Ingram 出版
2024/07/22 出版

This book is a collection of essays written by J繪rgen ?rstr繪m M繪ller since 2015, which focus on the geopolitical, geoeconomics and societal developments of recent times, including the war in Ukraine, Brexit and the future of the European Union, as well as the economic trajectories of the US, China and the UK.With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the US emerged as the sole superpower in a new world order. However, the rise of China in the subsequent decades has coincided with the reduced standing and power of the US.Understanding the shift in the global power balance requires an appreciation of the domestic developments in the US and China. On the one hand, the US under the Trump administration had taken a protectionist stance in its trade policies and built walls along its borders to keep out immigrants. On the other hand, the Chinese government has aggressively expanded its economy and posted high economic growth, as part of its efforts to uplift the lives of its people. With the US' economic strength in decline, how long will the incumbent superpower be able to hold on its pole position before being replaced by a challenger? This question and more are addressed in this book.

Evaluation and analysis of scientific production in Qualis Periodicals

Ingram 出版
2024/07/21 出版

This paper analyses and reflects on the role that the evaluation of scientific production in Qualis A1 (production considered to be of excellence) has played in Postgraduate Programmes in Education and in the scientific field. The scientific production produced by teachers and students is periodically evaluated by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education (Capes), the body responsible for evaluation. Thus, the problem arises around the evaluation criteria proposed by Capes for assessing the production of scientific knowledge and how these have affected the programmes and the scientific field. In this way, the aim is to understand the bases that underpin the evaluation criteria proposed by Capes and what is considered excellent scientific production.
