Religious Plurality in Africa

The War for Chinese Talent in America
To overcome their "brain drain," some developing countries employ the "Diaspora Option," encouraging their overseas nationals to use the knowledge they gained abroad to help their motherland. Since the mid-1990s, China's party/state has vigorously used an extensive array of programs and incentives to persuade ethnic Chinese living in America to transfer their technological knowhow back home. Many Chinese working abroad facilitated this flow, some to strengthen their former homeland, others from self-interest. In 2018, the Trump Administration declared war on these efforts. Employing a McCarthy-like campaign called the "China Initiative," the government investigated Chinese scientists across the U.S. Many individuals were arrested, only to have their cases dropped. Still, hundreds had their research disrupted or lost their jobs. This book documents China's 'no-holds-barred' effort to access U.S. technology and America's vigorous counterattack and its efforts to disrupt the transfer of U.S. technology to China. Six case studies include stories of unknown victims of that campaign whose cases were never made public. It highlights how the war has undermined Sino-American scientific collaboration and triggered the outflow of some top Chinese talent from America and back to China.

Social Representations of Gender Violence in Italy
This volume illustrates and analyses the stereotypes and prejudices underlying the social representation of violence against women as it is narrated and described in Italy by the press and by court judgements. After a theoretical reflection on the role of culture and socialisation in reproducing the conditions underlying gender-based violence and its normalisation, and after reconstructing the historical evolution of gender roles and the stages of women's condition, the book presents the results of a sociological and of a socio-linguistic analysis on a vast corpus of 16,715 newspaper articles published by fifteen Italian newspapers on gender crimes (specifically: femicide; sexual violence; domestic violence; women trafficking) . The chapters analyze how national, macro-regional and local Italian press narrates violence against women but they also analyze a repertoire of 283 judicial sentences. The results show a clear tendency to redistribute the responsibilities of these crimes between the perpetrator and the victim, leading not only to secondary victimization but also to tertiary victimization, affecting the quality of Italian institutions as well as the democratic fiber of the nation. The volume finally includes a compendium of the best and the worst practices found in the corpuses of sentences and newspapers' articles and a set of recommendations addressed to the institutional actors and journalists for a correct representation of gender-based violence, free from those stereotypes and prejudices that violate the dignity of male violence' victims and prevent them from accessing justice.

The Gendered and Colonial Lives of Gurkhas in Private Security
This book explores the ways in which affect, colonial histories, and militarism organise global security workforces within private military and security companies(PMSCs). It locates its analysis with Gurkhas; a group of militarised men from Nepal with over 200-years of military experience with the British and Indian armies and the Singaporean police, who now participate as security contractors in global markets. These men are celebrated in British popular culture for their heroic martial attributes and their broader military service to the United Kingdom. However, less known, is the fact that many Gurkhas located back in Nepal and their families are drawn into these markets under often exploitative relations. Drawing upon over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork with unprecedented access to these security communities throughout Nepal and in Afghanistan, the book's motivating questions are how security is made through these market relations and how is this security experienced by Gurkhas and their families.

Greece and the Cold War
After the proclamation of the Truman Doctrine in 1947, the United States became deeply involved in Greek affairs. By 1952, however, the pro-Western government of Marshal Papagos began to support the nationalist 'Enosis' movement in Cyprus and called for an end to British colonial rule in the island. The opposition of the US, Britain and Turkey to these demands brought Greece face-to-face with its closest allies at the United Nations in 1954 and led to the outbreak of the first major crisis within NATO since its creation. Greece and the Cold War examines these developments from the novel perspective of critical international theory and exposes the unexplored connections between dependence and nationalism in Greek foreign policy. Drawing on a wide range of American, British and Greek archival sources, it argues that nationalism and compliance with the collective interests of NATO were two irreconcilable objectives in Greek foreign policy after 1952. At the same time, the book tells the story of how the post-Civil War governments of Greece, for a variety of political, cultural and ideological reasons, treated these two objectives as essentially compatible, resulting in the adoption of a dualist policy. This self-contradictory diplomatic doctrine, which the author refers to as "dependent nationalism", lies at the heart of Greece's post-War failures both to emancipate its politics from US intervention and to peacefully end its regional dispute with Turkey over Cyprus. The book deploys an interdisciplinary approach which brings together the diverse perspectives of diplomatic history, foreign policy analysis and political sociology.
Africa at Crossroads
Welsh journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley described Africa as the Dark Continent on account of its mysterious interiors, native traditions that defied understanding by western minds and mostly imagined savagery that explorers expected to encounter. This picture of Africa was despite hundreds of years of mapping and documenting of the continent by colonial powers that appropriated its land and resources for consumption in Europe. Western opinion on Africa has barely graduated from these notions till contemporary times. Home to 54 countries, Africa today presents a picture that does not entirely merit this labelling. Aspiring to stand on par with western and eastern world, Africa today is evolving. Even as an estimated 35 conflicts rage in various parts of Africa, reserving a judgment only based on colonial portrayal is neither apt nor is a reflection of contemporary Africa. The beleaguered picture may as well be a sign of birth pangs of a continent that is keen to re-invent itself in order to emerge as a major player in the international arena. Will Africa be able to do so? What historical legacies are relevant to understand it? How does Africa view itself and the world? Is governance in Africa transforming? Is its society grappling with issues with a prospective vision? Do African nations view aid as the essential ingredient for their growth? Do major international players actually help Africa turn leafs of progress for betterment? These are some of the important questions that this book attempts to answer through methodological and substantial research.
2026 US-China Conflict surrounding Taiwan
China's move to unify Taiwan in 2026 will officially launch the G2 order.China's unification action is a small campaign militarily, but a decisive step politically since the Second World War. This action will declare that the world operates under a G2 order.The United States and its allies are virtually powerless to prevent, delay or reverse China's efforts to unify Taiwan. But the West must respond to this action. Failure to respond would be political suicide. The wrong response can also have suicidal consequences.The US response plan theoretically consists of two sets, a pre-event plan and a post-event plan, with a total of 6 toolkits. These include pre-peace negotiation plans; pre-emptive containment plans; post-event comprehensive political sanctions; comprehensive political sanctions plus economic sanctions; political sanctions plus military appeasement plans; and comprehensive total war plans.Once the United States enters a war with a medium to high level of response, the probability of withdrawal from East Asia is quite high. A higher level of war response could involve more variables. These variables include the initiation, acceleration and intensification of the process of comprehensive border movements in Europe; Russia's push to the L1 line; the deconstruction and reorganisation of the current European power order; the great chaos involving the European core area and surrounding areas; the choice between G2 and G3 after the war or the uncertainty of the G4 system, etc.In the face of China's "defensively offensive strategy", the chances of the American group defeating China (group) are quite small. However, although China (group) has the potential to deconstruct the European order and the US-led imperial order, it does not have the ability and opportunity to defeat the United States at the national level. China may not have the initiative to exploit its potentials fully.This does not mean that the United States has no chance of defeating China. Breaking the ground rules of the imperial order and successfully implementing a pre-emptive containment plan is one of them. However, the uncontrollable endpoint is a greater obstacle to the implementation of this plan.he early and rapid initiation of nuclear war, and the initiation of nuclear war after the failure of total war, will increase the possibility of military victory for the American group. Once Western public opinion believes that nuclear war can increase the possibility of victory, it will be extremely difficult for Western politicians to stop the nuclear option. This fact places the primary responsibility for preventing nuclear war on China. Building a comprehensive nuclear deterrent against the West is a nuclear responsibility that China must shoulder.In the complex response process, Europe's participation in the Sino-US military conflict will put tremendous pressure on China. At the same time, it will create enormous uncertainty for the prospects of Europe as a whole. European politicians need to spend more time considering European options.The complexity of the US plan to deal with China will add to the uncertainty of the world situation. Japan, South Korea and the Philippines will play different roles and have different consequences at different stages of the military conflict between China and the United States.
