Shakespeare's Christmas
This anthology recalls Christmas in Shakespeare's day, when it was an expansive festival, dominated by strict religious observance on the day itself, but including a long season of merrymaking, feasting and, most important of all, masques and plays. "Measure for Measure" was one of many of Shakespeare's plays first performed by "His Majestie's plaiers" during the 12-day festival at the Royal Court. Also included are little-known delights such as: the story of how Elizabeth I interrupted Shakespeare's performance by walking across the stage and dropping a glove at his feet; the 32 dishes expected to grace the table of a "modest home", including delectable Elizabethan desserts and Shakespeare's "roasted crabs hissing in the bowl"; how the barristers at Inns of Court danced before the judges; the ballad by George Wither of an Elizabethan Christmas, celebrated 16th-century poet Robert Herrick's verse on the ceremonies for Christmas, and the winter poem by the Catholic martyr, Father Robert Southwell. "The Masque of Christmas" by Shakespeare's contemporary, Ben Jonson, appears here complete, and readers learn of the ignoble goings-on of the Lord of Misrule.

How we worship reveals what we believe about the God we worship. With careful exposition of Leviticus 10:3, Burroughs shows that worship must be governed by God's Word, not our inventions. He exposes the subtle dangers of "strange fire" (introducing into worship what God has not commanded) and pleads with readers to truly reverence the Lord in the ordinances: in prayer, in hearing the Word, and in the Lord's Supper.Profound, practical, and deeply convicting, Gospel Worship is both a theological treatise and a devotional aid - meant to reform our worship and rekindle our reverence for our awesome and powerful God.

The False White Gospel
NOW A NEW YORK TIMES AND A USA TODAY BESTSELLER "Everyone who claims to be 'Christian' or else claims to be upset by 'Christianity' needs to read this book, especially politicians using people's supposed faith for their own ends." --Margaret E. Atwood"Jim Wallis calls the nation to grow up and he calls us all to fight the love battle to save the soul of America." --From the Foreword by Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. A New York Times bestseller, arguing that the answer to bad religion is true faith that will help re-found democracy It is time says Jim Wallis, to call out genuine faith--specifically the "Christian" in White Christian Nationalism--inviting all who can be persuaded to reject and help dismantle a false gospel that propagates white supremacy and autocracy. Wallis turns our attention to six iconic texts at the heart of what genuine biblical faith means and what Jesus, in the gospels, has called us to do. It is time to ask anew: do we believe these teachings or not? This book isn't only for Christians but for all faith traditions, and even those with no faith at all. When we see a civic promotion of fear, hate, and violence for the trajectory of our politics, we need a civic faith of love, healing, and hope to defeat it. And that must involve all of us-religious or not. Learning to practice a politics of neighbor love will be central to the future of democracy in America. And more than ever, the words of Jesus ring, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Through the advice of St. Thomas Aquinas and other great spiritual masters, as well as leading Christian psychologists, Fr. Giertych names and explains the reality of emotions to help form young adults to grow in virtue and develop mature identities, free of painful anxieties. God wants us to be healed and freed from emotional entanglements, to be true carriers of His love. Wholeness is possible, and these life-giving pages provide solutions to help you use the evils of this life to springboard ever deeper and more frequently into the arms of God Himself. As Fr. Giertych examines Christian spirituality, morality, and psychology, you will discover: The secret to ordering your senses when emotions run amok Hope for individuals with fragile emotions to find the fullness of joy How to integrate sexual feelings and assertive feelings in every vocation Ways of dealing with emotional swings The neuroses that may develop from repressed emotions Why it is crucial to remain childlike before God Even though we all have some bodily, psychological, or intellectual inhibitions and limitations, we can, in spite of them, accept, live, and share the gift of God's grace with serenity. By entrusting ourselves to the Heart of Christ through faith, we allow the fire of His divine life to be ignited in us. Enoch Walked with God
Christians say you have to 'walk with God, ' but what does that even mean?Enoch Walked with God: And You Can Too digs deep to answer this question by comparing a physical walk to a spiritual walk. We live in a world where God is considered irrelevant or even dead. Can we walk with God in a world like this? Why would we want to?This book investigates the life of Enoch - a man who is only mentioned a handful of times in the Bible, but we know he walked so close with God that he never died. "Enoch walked with God, then he was no more, because God took him away," (Genesis 5:24). What was the world like when Enoch lived? Can we draw comparisons to the world now? How did he walk with God? Can we still walk with God today like he did then? (Spoiler alert: We CAN!)In Enoch Walked with God: And You Can Too, Caitlin compares the characteristics of a physical walk with a spiritual walk and, with a look at Enoch's life, she paints a full picture of walking with God. She provides practical actions that can be taken to walk with God today.
Celebrities for Jesus
Many Christian leaders use their fame and influence to effectively say to their followers, "Follow me as I follow Christ." But when fame is cultivated for its own sake without spiritual maturity and accountability, it has a shadow side that betrays the heart of the gospel. Celebrity--defined as social power without proximity--has led to abuses of power, the cultivation of persona, and a fixation on profits. The time has come for the church to reexamine its relationship with celebrity. Award-winning journalist Katelyn Beaty explores the ways fame has reshaped the American church, explains how and why celebrity is woven into the fabric of the evangelical movement, and identifies many ways fame has gone awry in recent years. She shows us how evangelical culture is uniquely attracted to celebrity gurus over and against institutions, and she offers a renewed vision of ordinary faithfulness, helping us all keep fame in its proper place. Now in paperback."This book is a great gift and should be required reading for all who love the church."--Rich Villodas, pastor of New Life Fellowship; author of The Deeply Formed Life

Devotion to Our Lord in the Womb: The Divine Nine Months
Devotion to Our Lord in the Womb embraces a distinct and separate stage in the history of the Incarnation, writes English author and Jesuit priest Henry James Coleridge. Our Lord's life in the womb of His Blessed Mother, he adds, is a part of His infinite condescension which calls for a corresponding devotion. Beginning with the Annunciation itself and ending on the eve of the Nativity, it covers the whole unborn life of Our Lord. This portion of His human existence is the period of His greatest humiliation and self-abasement. It is only natural that those who take up this special devotion should find themselves consoled and assisted in a wonderful degree by the practices and contemplations associated with it.In this abridgment of the 1885 edition, Coleridge identifies the Incarnation as the greatest work of God. Indeed, he writes, it may be considered as the crown and completion of the creation of the universe. Christ was sent to earth for the redemption of mankind, and for their instruction in the manner of serving God perfectly. The eye of faith can see from the early life of Christ many holy and tender lessons of humility, obedience, silence, recollection, dependence, and other virtues. The devotion to the infancy of Christ throws light on the position of the Blessed Mother in the Kingdom of her divine Son, His dependence on her and union with her, the immensity of her graces, and the supreme perfection of her virtues. Among other things, the author also discusses the preparation of St. Joseph for his high and special office in the accomplishment of the Incarnation and all that followed from it.Excerpts from The Nine Months: "...Mary cannot have either the fulness [of grace] which is infinite and which sheds itself on all creatures without exhausting itself, nor can she have the imparted grace of the fulness which was in our Lord as Man, in Him alone without measure. In the same way she could not have been so full of grace as not to be able to receive more, or to increase in grace, nor, with regard to the fulness of truth of which St. John speaks, could she in her mortal life, have had that in such a manner as to know all things, nor did she behold God as He is, in the way in which the saints in glory behold Him. Her plenitude of grace was the plenitude of a pure creature, and therefore immeasurably distant from that which is in God and in our Lord. When the Angel addresses her as full of grace, he must be understood as implying that she was as full of grace, as she could be full. And the Saints and Fathers tell us that she was thus so full of grace, as that she could have had no greater fulness, unless she had been herself united to the Godhead, as was the Humanity of her Son. The reason for this is the simple principle, that she had been raised, or was to be raised, to a dignity than which no higher, under God, can possibly be conceived, the dignity of the Mother of God.""The object of the Incarnation was the Redemption of the world. If Mary the Mother of God was raised so high in the favor of God in order that she might be fit, to be the conscious and willing instrument of this great work of the Incarnation, it stands to reason that her influence and power with God, which of necessity correspond to her graciousness in His sight, must be exercised in favor of those for whom He became her Son, and that she must have the office of being the patroness and advocate of all those for whom He was to die. As our Lord made Himself our Brother by taking flesh in her most pure womb, our relation to her as His brethren must be that of children, and thus the holiest and tenderest of ties that can exist between creatures, that of Motherhood and Sonship, binds us to her and her to us by a bond that nothing can sever. When she ceases to be the Mother of Jesus Christ she will cease to be our Mother through Him.""The first quality which the Angel attributes to our Lord is greatness. He was to be great on account

Genes of Eden
What if our deepest struggles with sin and addiction are embedded in our very biology--and yet, so is the hope for redemption? Genes of Eden explores the profound connection between theology and science, uncovering how the ancient doctrine of original sin aligns with the current science of epigenetics. Through vivid storytelling and thoughtful analysis, this groundbreaking book investigates how inherited patterns of trauma, addiction, and behavior are more than personal struggles, but transgenerational heritages encoded in our very genes. Yet this isn't a story of despair. Drawing on the timeless wisdom of Augustine and Kierkegaard, alongside the cutting edge of biology, Genes of Eden offers a powerful, hope-filled perspective on human brokenness. Are we prisoners of our past, or can grace and renewal reshape not only our lives but even the biology we pass on? Whether you're a theologian, scientist, or someone wrestling with big questions about faith, heredity, or healing, Genes of Eden will challenge and inspire you. By weaving together the truths of theology and the discoveries of science, it offers a vision of redemption that reaches beyond biology to touch the very soul.

Seraphim of Sarov
Margarita Woloschin's narrative of the life of Seraphim of Sarov, translated into English here for the first time, was published in Moscow in 1913, just ten years after Sarov's canonization by the Russian Orthodox Church in July of 1903.Presenting the most remarkable facts and key stages of Saint Seraphim's life, Woloschin's storytelling contemplates deeply about the nature of miracles, the Holy Spirit, the human soul and spirituality, the Word of God, and silence. The Spiritual Journey and the Deeper Life
A Deeper Life Begins with Letting Go, Not Trying HarderIn The Spiritual Journey and the Deeper Life, philosopher James Danaher gently unpacks what it means to live a life shaped by the Spirit rather than by the natural mind. Rather than offering spiritual checklists or formulas for success, Danaher explores how our perception must change if we are to experience the freedom, joy, and love that Christ offers. The deeper life, he writes, is not a reward for effort, but a fruit of transformation-one that comes when we move beyond appearances, beyond performance, and beyond the need to prove ourselves. Through practical reflections and profound insights, Danaher shows how spiritual growth depends less on willpower and more on the gracious reordering of how we see and respond to the world. With warmth, clarity, and deep wisdom, this book invites you to release the burdens of fear, pride, and self-righteousness-and to embrace a life rooted in love, humility, and trust. If you are weary of shallow religion or simply long for something more real, The Spiritual Journey and the Deeper Life offers a path of inner renewal, one that begins not with effort-but with grace.JAMES P. DANAHER, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus Nyack College, Alliance University.
No Greater Love: The True Meaning of Martyrdom
No Greater Love: The True Meaning of Martyrdom is a guide to not only the Church's teaching on martyrdom, but a prayerful exposition of the models of Catholic Martyrdom. Born from the sacrifice of Christ--the Faithful Witness--martyrdom remains the Church's most powerful testimony to the Eternal Truth. From the Holy Innocents to modern saints, martyrs have offered their lives in unwavering love and fortitude. This book explores both the visible martyrdom of blood and the hidden martyrdom of desire, revealing how every Christian is called to offer their life in love, even without the sword. Drawing on Scripture, papal wisdom, and the luminous witness of saints, readers are invited to embrace their role in the militant Church, striving toward holiness with courage and charity. In an age of noise, compromise, and confusion, Bishop Athanasius Schneider reminds us: the Truth is worth dying for--and even more, worth living for.
A Theology for the Church, 2nd Edition
Since the first edition in 2007, A Theology for the Church has uniquely served students throughout Baptist seminaries and colleges. The revised edition in 2014 brought welcome updates and new chapters, and the second edition seeks to maintain the same core structure and approach while introducing new authors and adding an additional chapter. As in the first and subsequent editions, the chapters in A Theology for the Church cover traditional theological categories such as revelation, humanity, Christ, and last things. Additionally, each chapter seeks to answer the same four questions in relation to the doctrinal category covered: What does the Bible say? What has the church believed? How does it all fit together? and How does this doctrine impact the church today? Undergirded by the primacy of Scripture with a robust appreciation of church history, each contributor seeks to demonstrate the relevance of the Bible for the contemporary audience in its particular historical and cultural context. The task of theology must be recovered in the church if it is to have vitality and health in the years to come, and this new edition helps advance this important task.
Saint Antonino and Mediaeval Economics
The chief justification that can be urged for this Life of Saint Antonino is to be derived from the value of his economic theories. These are so eminently reasonable and yet so flamingly ideal, so soberly described by him and yet so sincerely Christian, that they must make their appeal to every reader. We are so often repeating that we live in a time of crisis, that civilization stands at the crossways, that the outlook towards the future promises few prospects of hope; we are so increasingly struck by the difficulties that loom ahead of us, so terrified even by the signs of the times, that it is surely good for us to watch how another, in a period of stress and trouble, rose to the height of his great position and brought an answer to the questionings of his own generation. -From the Introduction

Witnessing the Wounds: Catholic Theology, Trauma, and Social Healing
Trauma is definitive of our current world and increasingly popular in theology. However, engagement with the layers of "trauma" remains thin and nearly non-existent in Catholic theology. This volume specifically includes emerging scholars in Catholic theology to explore the intersections of trauma studies and theological studies. Moving through four units, from history to ethics, Trauma and Catholic Theology provides a necessary, rigorous, and forward-thinking text to prepare lay leaders in various fields, pastors, and theologians to engage the realities of those with whom they work. This book brings together emerging and diverse voices in Catholic theology to engage trauma in its multivalent forms to provide a foundational text for teaching trauma studies in undergraduate and seminary theology, ethics, and church history classrooms.
Words of Life: The Preaching of St.Oscar Romero
"The martyrdom of Saint ?scar Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador, was a powerful witness and an inspiration for the Church. He had made his own the plight of the vast majority of his flock and made them the center of his pastoral vision."--Pope Leo, Dilexi Te, 89 St. ?scar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador, who was slain at the altar while saying Mass in 1980, is undoubtedly one of the towering figures of the modern church. More than four decades later, his words and witness are a source of challenge and inspiration. It is arguably Romero's homilies that provide the best and most intimate portrait of his testimony. Yet that message, in six volumes totaling more than 2,500 pages, has been hard to access. In Words of Life: The Preaching of St. ?scar Romero, Todd Walatka has selected a dozen of his most iconic sermons, beginning with his homily following the assassination of his friend, Jesuit Father Rutilio Grande, in 1977, and concluding with his final homily on the day of his assassination three years later. Broadcast live on the radio from his cathedral in San Salvador, Romero's Sunday homilies were a national and ecclesial event. While reflecting aloud on the Word of God, he related the gospel to the daily events in El Salvador. Addressing the hopes, joys, and anguish of his suffering people, he was also careful to document the accelerating incidence of human rights violations. But if Romero's preaching had political implications, these sermons show how deeply his response to the world was rooted in his deep incarnational faith. Following the path of the Son of God who took on our flesh, Romero urged his flock to incarnate the gospel message in their own lives in their commitment both to charity and to justice. All the while, he knew the risks he was taking. Yet he persisted to the end. As he said in his final sermon, "Those who seek to shun danger will lose their lives, whereas those who, for love of Christ, dedicate themselves to the service of others will live. . . . They are like that grain of wheat that dies, at least in appearance. If the grain does not die, it remains alone. If it yields a crop, it is because it dies, allowing itself to be immolated in the earth."

Drawing wisdom from Scripture and insights from church history, Piper challenges the belief that believers must sacrifice joy in order to please God. Instead, finding delight in God does not diminish his glory; rather, it magnifies it and fulfills the deepest desires of our souls.
