The Church Master's Narrative vs. The Church's Master Narrative
In this modest volume, the reader will discover a garden of biblical and theological edibles. John Matthews has pruned seventy-plus-years of Christian living, growing & dying. . . baptism, Sunday School & confirmation, worship & study, seminary & graduate school, marriage & family, congregational ministry, military & emergency chaplaincy, university teaching, loss of a spouse & the gift of another. . . and now he is writing about the Church Master Narrative which has been the earth under his feet. After describing that CMN, John leads the reader into three pieces of that Narrative that he believes are malignant and in need of repudiation: Theological supersessionism, Church exclusivism and Christian Messianism. His claim, as the title of this book announces, is that the Church's Master Narrative is not the same, in every detail, as the Church Master's Narrative. He humbly and courageously offers his career-long insights for the sake of the Kingdom of God, and for each reader to digest.

A Treatise on Earthly-Mindedness
Jeremiah Burroughs is one of the most beloved of the seventeenth-century English Puritans. In this important work, Burroughs shows from Scripture the great sin of thinking as the world thinks rather than thinking God's thoughts after Him. Then, realizing that right conduct is the result of right thinking, Burroughs gives us more gems in the two bonus treatises offered here, A Heavenly Conversation and Walking with God.The Puritans rightly discerned the relationship between a person's doctrine and his or her walk before God and fellow man. May the Lord use these sermons to give us the same kind of discernment in our day. May we learn to think biblically, and then may we begin to act accordingly.Table of Contents: A Treatise of Earthly-Mindedness Foreword by R.C. Peer Supervision - Beyond the Basics
The spiritual direction supervision process was adapted from supervision in the psychological community. It helps a spiritual director uncover personal agendas, self-protective motives, or psychological and spiritual impediments to freedom in the spiritual director. Supervision is vital for every spiritual director, new or experienced. It provides an opportunity for a spiritual director (some say companion) to perform a personal inventory, to prayerfully explore personality traits or issues that might interfere with direction, as well as moments of grace, and then use that information to grow and develop into a better person and in the process, become a better spiritual director. It is important to note that supervision deals with the inner movements of the director, not the directed. During the process, the director and supervisor(s) contemplatively listen together to God and what has been going on inside the director (his or her affect) while he /she is listening to another. Both the supervised spiritual director and supervisors explore together where they noticed God in the direction session. Effective supervision opens the director to self and his or her feelings, responses, or reactions, which might include almost any emotion including boredom, anger, fear, anxiety, distraction, as well as enthusiasm, joy, peace, and hope. Supervision provides many benefits including: Opens the heart and soul more fully to God.Increases inner freedom, transparency and humility.Aligns human hearts with the work of the Holy Spirit.Helps a person hone the ability to be a spiritual director.Develops close relationships, trust, and respect among supervision group members.]This book will help you begin or improve your spiritual direction through group supervision. It provides formats for recording direction sessions, supervision presentations, verbatim, and a supervision meeting agenda. And hopefully, it will help you grow toward Christ and deepen your prayer.
Calling on Fire
Uncover transformative strategies derived from Wesleyan heritage. Today, many Methodists feel adrift and seek ways to revitalize their churches amid the challenges they face. They seek a "method" for their mission. Yet, sometimes to move forward, we must look back. And our Methodist heritage provides a "field guide" for forming faith and caring for our neighbors. Calling on Fire dives into key moments in Methodist history that can have practical, real-world impact today. It brings the Wesleyan Quadrilateral to life by giving churches a clear framework for effective ministry that connects Methodist history with present-day opportunities. The models it provides root us and give us strength, inviting us to travel outside our comfort zones and find people on the margins who are hurting and hungry for hope and good news--whether in online spaces, digital communities, or outside the church. The practical steps and aids in this resource are derived from field-based research and experience. The tools it offers can help churches that are struggling with decline, disaffiliation, and closures to spark personal and communal transformation through field preaching, micro-communities, social engagement, and leadership activation.
Liturgical Worship
Liturgical worship is often viewed as nothing more than an outdated tradition, or a series of meaningless words and motions. The reality, however, is much different. The form of worship that is often described as liturgical, or traditional, has strong roots in both Scripture and Christian history. In this book, Rev. Cooper explains the Biblical and theological foundations of liturgical worship. This is then followed by chapters on various aspects of the worship service. The meaning of each element is illuminated alongside of the rich Scriptural teaching within these aspects of Christian worship. At the end of the work, a glossary is included which serves as a guide for those who are unfamiliar with liturgical terminology.
