Imag(in)ing Jesus in the Universal or Particular
This volume is a critical exploration of cross-cultural Bible film reception presented through an analysis of the responses of UK and South African audiences to The Lumo Project: The Gospel of Mark (2014) and Son of Man (2006). Victoria Olaide Omotoso places emphasis on audience reception and highlighting the non-Western experience of biblical films by examining the responses of audiences from different cultural contexts to identical media, with a cross-cultural audience discourse facilitated by cultural dynamics: fidelity to the (biblical) text, ethnicity, music, and gender. By examining historic and cinematic debates, audience responses and filmmaker responses, Omotoso explores the ethnicity of Jesus, theological contexts and implications, and the presentation of Jesus in an androcentric world. Omotoso adopts the concepts of universality and particularity as frameworks to determine the ways through which the filmmakers attempt to identify their cinematic visions and locations. She defines universality as a phenomenon through which the filmmaker seeks to place the narrative within a trans-cultural frame for a global audience; in contrast, her definition of particularity is envisioning a unitary and specific cultural context for the narrative. By exploring fidelity to the text, the ethnic identity of Jesus, musical contexts, masculinity and female agency, the universal and particular are shown as complex, contested, and shifting concepts within the process of cross-cultural audience reception, which frequently destabilizes the intentions of the filmmakers.
Inaugurated Resurrection in Earliest Christianity
Daniel W. Hayter explores the concept of 'inaugurated resurrection' within earliest Christianity; the view that believers have experienced a present resurrection with Christ, in advance of their final resurrection at his return. He argues that belief in inaugurated resurrection is already discernible in Paul's own writings, in large part due to the influence of Scripture, suggesting that the influence of Ezekiel 36-37 on Paul's understanding of the gift of the Spirit helps to explain this belief: Paul saw inaugurated resurrection as a way of speaking of receiving the Spirit. Hayter thus examines the reception of Ezekiel 36-37 in Second Temple Jewish literature, in order to situate Paul's own understanding of these chapters in the wider Jewish context, and follows with an extensive exploration of Ezekiel 36-37 in Paul's own writings. He argues that Paul understood Ezekiel's vision of the resurrection of dry bones to have been fulfilled in the present in the gift of God's Spirit to those in Christ, that Paul's understanding of Ezekiel is then brought to bear on a close exegesis of Romans 6.1-14, and that Paul's view of the Spirit in light of Ezekiel 36-37 helps to explain the strong connection between inaugurated resurrection and baptism.Hayter concludes that, far from being non-bodily, inaugurated resurrection, by baptism in one Spirit, implies incorporation into the resurrected body of Christ.
Hermeneutics, Linguistics, and the Bible
The volume presents Stanley E. Porter's considered thoughts and reflections on key questions of meaning and context, addressing the problems of biblical interpretation and how a close collaboration between hermeneutics and linguistics can help to solve them. The chapters display Porter's work in both fields, examining how hermeneutics functions as a field in modern biblical studies, and how the quest for meaning in biblical texts is underpinned by the study of linguistics. The volume focuses on context for understanding the meanings of biblical texts. Porter suggests that linguists can learn more from the philosophical questions around meaning that hermeneutics apply in their study of biblical texts, and that there is more fruitful work to be done in the field of hermeneutics using insights from linguistics.
Simon of Samaria and the Simonians
Who were the Simonians? Beginning in the mid-second century CE, heresiologists depicted them as licentious followers of the first "gnostic," a supposedly Samarian self-deifier called Simon, who was thought to practice "magic" and became known as the father of all heresies. Litwa examines the Simonians in their own literature and in the literature used to refute and describe them. He begins with Simonian primary sources, namely The Declaration of Great Power (embedded in the anonymous Refutation of All Heresies) and The Concept of Our Great Power (Nag Hammadi codex VI,4). Litwa argues that both are early second-century products of Simonian authors writing in Alexandria or Egypt. Litwa then moves on to examine the heresiological sources related to the Simonians (Justin, the book of Acts, Irenaeus, the author of the Refutation of All Heresies, Pseudo-Tertullian, Epiphanius, and Filaster). He shows how closely connected Justin's report is to the portrait of Simon in Acts, and offers an extensive exegesis and analysis of Simonian theology and practice based on the reports of Irenaeus and the Refutator. Finally, Litwa examines Simonianism in novelistic sources, namely the Acts of Peter and the Pseudo-Clementines. By the time these sources were written, Simon had become the father of all heresies. Accordingly, virtually any heresy could be attributed to Simon. As a result-despite their alluring portraits of Simon-these sources are mostly unusable for the historical study of the Simonian Christian movement. Litwa concludes with a historical profile of the Simonian movement in the second and third centuries. The book features appendices which contain Litwa's own translations of primary Simonian texts.
Jerome's Sources in His Translation of the Hebrew Bible
At the close of the fourth century CE, Jerome of Stridon-renowned Latin scholar, theologian, and priest-undertook the monumental task of translating the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible into Latin. The result of this effort, now known as the Vulgate, has long been regarded as a foundational text of Western Christianity. In this volume, Paul Rodrigue investigates the sources that Jerome may have drawn upon in the process of translation.Far from being just a rendering of the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible, the Vulgate emerges as a layered and multifaceted translation, shaped not only by the Hebrew-Aramaic text but also by a broad array of additional sources. Through a series of carefully chosen case studies, Rodrigue analyses a number of verses from the Joseph narrative in Genesis, as well as from Daniel and Esther. Each Vulgate passage is meticulously compared with its equivalents in the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible, the Septuagint, the Latin translations of the Septuagint, the Greek versions of Aquila, Symmachus, and Theodotion, and-where applicable-the Targumim and rabbinic writings. This comparative approach reveals Jerome's engagement with texts in four languages-Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin-and highlights his responses to both Jewish and Christian exegetical traditions. Importantly, the selected translations span Jerome's career as a translator of the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible: Daniel at its outset (392-393), Genesis mid-career (late 390s), and Esther at its close (404-405). As such, Rodrigue's analysis offers a chronologically nuanced study of Jerome's evolving translation method (sensus de sensu), providing invaluable insight for scholars of biblical studies, late antiquity, translation theory, and the transmission of sacred texts.
Unity in the Book of Isaiah
Building on previous holistic readings of the Book of Isaiah, this collection approaches Isaiah through the concept of unity. Contributors outline research that point to new directions in the unity movement and, in the process, bring it under a critical gaze, considering the perennial challenges to unity reading and thus problematizing the very concept of unity. Divided into four parts, the book provides methodological reflections on reading Isaiah as a unity, and examines historical and redactional readings, literary readings and contextual or reader-orientated readings. Topics include how the figure of Jacob functions as a unifying motif in the final form of the book, Isaiah 1 as an example of the relevance of local structure for global coherence and how woman as a root metaphor of Zion not only bears revelatory significance but also serves as a theological linchpin for a more holistic reading of the book. Overall, the book highlights the continued promise of holistic readings for diverse methods and varied approaches to the Book of Isaiah.
Solid Truth for Slippery Times
Solid Truth for Slippery Times It's easy to be 'bewitched' by 'another gospel' if you don't know the True Gospel. The Galatians, like many people today, went along with what felt right in the moment rather than standing firm on truth, but the Apostle Paul was unwilling to leave them in their muddled thinking. In the midst of zealous deceivers, Paul reminds his reader then and now that at the heart of the True Gospel is the cross of Jesus Christ, that God has always saved His people by faith, and that in Christ God turns slaves into sons! Growing weary in slippery times? Solid truth is the antidote. In a world of mysticism, syncretism, and other false teaching, it's critical to know truth for yourself so you can discern the influence of 'other gospels' and live in the power and freedom of the True Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Bible and Women
How Did I Miss So Much?Female leadership can be found in the Old Testament in ways often missed, and female leadership in the New Testament is often hiding in plain sight. This book is aimed at bringing out what has been hidden and denied for too long. As we unpack the specific passages that reveal the truths about women in leadership, I believe you will feel like you are watching a puzzle fall into place. When Jesus prayed that his will be done on earth as it is in heaven, the answer to this prayer will not condone women being seen or treated in any way inferior to men. The Bible, properly understood, will simply not allow it. Therefore, we as God's children can no longer allow it. To that end I wrote this book. Truth must trump our traditions. While many books have been written on this topic, Gordon offers some new perspectives for us to ponder. He has written, not to create conflict, but to help us rethink and reapply some of our understanding of scriptures that prayerfully bring us closer to God's divine will for which we were created. -Jeanie ShawIt is my belief that all who come to this work in the spirit of Psalm 139's ending prayer, will go away with a deep appreciation for the work that Gordon has done and fresh understanding that will help us, makes and females, to be the people of God, more like Jesus our Lord, going forward in these modern times. -Tom A. JonesGordon has pulled off the difficult task of exploring a difficult and controversial topic with grace, clarity, and simpicity. He brings some much-needed fresh perspective to a topic that has been covered by many scholars but very few have done so from the practical and pastoral angle that this book proves. -Michael Burns
Modern Callings; Listen When God Calls
The inspiration for this book comes from the Lord as a calling. It is my belief that we are put on this earth for the purpose of worshiping the Lord, and that the Lord does not rule our lives, but, rather allows us to make our own decisions about whether we will believe in God, about whether we will believe in Jesus, how we will treat others, etc. I just don't believe that he intervenes in most cases. In some cases however, when the Lord calls someone, it is an offer that one cannot refuse, and sometimes it is a person being called that most righteous people would not expect to be called. The Lord uses us to serve his purposes sometimes, and not just leads us to do so, but, sometimes forces us to do so. I like to think about some of the people he has used. Moses for instance was raised by the pharaoh's family and was not prone to doing the job he did. Noah. Jonas. We can go on. More often than not though, the people who are called upon are not, and never will be famous. We are given a job to do, and it may be very small, but, it is our job. One of my favorite hymns is Go Tell it on the Mountain. I like the part where He made me a watchman upon the city wall, and if I am a Christian, I am the least of all. I have always been a Christian, but, I have always been a sinner too, and when I think about it, I often wonder why the Lord would have chosen me to accomplish his goal that I was assigned. And since have been assigned more. This writing is an assignment I have been putting off for a few years, but, I have had some serious warnings to get on the ball.

Peace
"Living in the peace of God is something I must learn to walk out as I go along. It has been vital for me to remember that God's peace cost Him: it is not cheap. Jesus died a cruel death on the cross to secure our peace with God and our ability to relax in the peace of God.This book was written with you in mind, and it would be our privilege to lift you in prayer. We also know that God's Word does not return void; therefore, we believe this book will bless countless people. We look forward to hearing how our readers were able to connect, be challenged, and maybe change as a result of this book."-from the Foreword by Melissa Blanchard

Early Judaism and the New Testament
The relationship between Early Judaism and the New Testament is a major issue in biblical studies, one that has impacted Jewish-Christian relations for centuries. This impact has often been negative due to troubling misconceptions of both the New Testament and Jewish writings contemporaneous with it. Misunderstandings have arisen from inaccurate information, religious traditions, and anti-Semitism.Warren Carter and Ariel Feldman address and correct these misconceptions by engaging with the New Testament and major writings from Early Judaism, including the Apocrypha, Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as Philo and Josephus. The authors emphasize various interactions among these traditions for the purpose of better interpreting the New Testament and, importantly, avoiding anti-Jewish bias. This is an ideal supplemental textbook for students of the New Testament as well as interested clergy and laity. The text is straightforward and readable, and unlike other books on the topic, it does not assume prior knowledge of Early Judaism or of New Testament engagement with it. Each chapter recognizes troubling misunderstandings that people often have about the interactions between Early Judaism and the New Testament and includes discussion prompts.

God's Acts for Israel, Gentiles, and Christians
The book of Acts is often read as a narrative. Here's how to read it as theology. In this landmark essay collection, Joshua Jipp explains how the Acts of the Apostles and its companion volume, Luke's Gospel, illuminate what God has done for Israel, for Gentiles, and for Christians. The collection--which brings together new essays with previously published works--provides close readings of specific passages while also setting forth a comprehensive vision of the character, purpose, and activity of God. Among other topics, Jipp explores intertextual readings of Israel's sacred writings, the suffering Messiah, ethnic reasoning, conversion, mental illness, economics, and hospitality. The result is a significant contribution to the theology of Acts and, by extension, the theology of the New Testament. Expansive in scope and evangelical in spirit, this is a must-read volume for New Testament scholars and theologians alike.

What if everything you have thought about Job is not what the text describes? What if the Bible translations have naively misled people to believe that Job was perfect when in reality he was not? Join me in one of the most fascinating journeys through the Bible. God is in the business of helping people like Job, to see the cracks in their characters. And in order for that to happen, some extraordinary events need to take place.

The Vital Villain
For this reason I raised you up, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. - Romans 9:17Thus Yahweh, the God of the ancient Israelites, was said to have sent a message to Pharaoh of ancient Egypt, who held the nation of Israel under bondage. In deliberately hardening Pharaoh's heart and turning him into the ultimate arch-enemy of Moses and Aaron in the now world-famous narrative of the Exodus from Egypt, Yahweh created for His newly liberated people the most historic and awe-inspiring of contrasts. Little did Pharaoh know that, in his refusal to bow the knee to Yahweh, he would serve the purposes of the Divine in the most glorious and triumphant of high-wire spectacles. As all great story-tellers know, there is no compelling narrative without a great villain. Thus Yahweh-this most jealous of all gods-set apart Pharaoh, the ultimate nemesis, to serve as an unwitting agent in establishing the basis of faith for billions of people for thousands of years to come. And St. Paul, writing to the Christians in Rome over a millennia later, would appeal to this principle of the Divine utilizing the "vital villain", reasoning that, in the same way that Pharaoh was used in the establishing of a new people set apart, so also St Paul's own countrymen-those Pharisees who had "lost the plot" of the historic spiritual essence of their own faith-would also serve as unwitting agents in the continued glory of the story.
