Islands of Disbelief
"The people I could have been multiply. I only walk to the sun in dreams." Judith Steele's poems about childhood draw on Anglo-Irish heritage tales, fabled knights and the hero Cuchulain. (Neverland). From her first dream she sees the vulnerability of the world and the creatures in it (Bushfire Dreaming), the fragility of human and especially family relationships (The Child Remembers, Reflections, Rose Undaughter, Never Again, Gone). She observes contemporary Australia and its media (Chairman, Community Housing, The News, Diurnal, Night Lights), chronicles the journey of her body from supple youth to the fractures of age (Seapath, Bilateral Fractures). She observes her feet and how far they've come with her, observes the tangled relationships between tourists and developers and inhabitants of neighbouring Indonesia (Water Sister). Throughout her work the human toil and moil is surrounded by the grace of the nonhuman world, tattered though it is by ever-more human encroachment. That last section of the book gazes clearly at the simple fragility of everything (To Peg, On This Summer Day). & sometimes, "Boredom is going about someone else's business too often."

Samson and Delilah
Dogs are forever. They are not to be tossed aside because they don't fit our version of a perfect dog. They kiss away our tears, cuddle next to us when we are sad, greet us with excitement and high spirits, even if we are in a bad mood, and stay by our side in times of trouble and tears. They know very well the meaning of the words, "till death do us part." Based on true events that happened to Elizabeth and her husband, David, Samson and Delilah, is a heartwarming story about two very different, adorable beagles, and how they each captured their guardians' hearts and formed a bond that would be cherished always. This journey shows how we love and protect those closest to our hearts. With humor and humility, the author reveals what it's like to open your heart to not one, but two loveable beagles. The story also shares the challenges encountered in living with two dogs in a New York City apartment and the joy of having two quirky dogs like Samson and Delilah. While this book is candid and sincere and sad and funny, it focuses on the issues of giving dogs a second chance. Sharing the antics and adventures of Samson and Delilah, this book shows how to work through the challenges that may arise in that most valuable and rewarding of relationships. Most importantly, it will also inspire people to take action to rescue a dog-maybe two.

Black Families and Recession in the United States
Black Families and the Recession in the United States goes beyond the massive loss of property among African Americans during the Great Recession of 2007-2009. It connects the housing experience to broader systems of inequality in America. Following the Great Recession of 2007-2009, the US elections of 2008, the impact of COVID-19, and widespread demonstrations resulting from the murder of George Floyd by police, the sociopolitical and economic status of Blacks in the United States is at a critical point in history, with demand for major transformation. The authors reveal a history of racist practices against Blacks in many systems, including education, policing, incarceration, wealth transmission, voting restrictions, and housing segregation. The social costs of the recession are manifested in the daily lives of African American families. In addition to financial losses, African Americans are more likely to be plagued with issues related to poverty, chronic illnesses, and lack of trust of social and economic institutions. Research, policy, and practical implications of this research include identifying social and economic supports unique to African Americans and determining strategies to strengthen families; paramount to addressing racial disparities. The interdisciplinary focus of this book appeals to a wide audience and areas of study.

Raising Faith
Raising Faith: The Ups and Downs of Raising a Child with Down Syndrome is an essential read for moms, dads, family members, teachers and anyone who loves a person with Down syndrome. Rather than having a book about caring for a child with Down syndrome written by a doctor, this one is a wonderful memoir and guide written by a mother. It's a personal message, while also educating other mothers or family members on what they can do to help make things easier through the wonderful and difficult times. The author leaves nothing out. In this page turner, you will not only learn useful tips and strategies but will feel as if you are no longer alone as you laugh and cry reading her stories and those of other moms. Stories of happy and memorable times, of stressful and rough times, of times when faith and hope was all they had, and of times when nothing sounded better than to just run away. This mix of emotions truly makes this story enticingly raw and relatable. Ultimately, through the good and the bad, the author's daughter has been nothing but a blessing, in her and her family's lives. Gina Panzino Lyman reassures and encourages readers to hold onto faith that God will always provide for them. Gina Panzino Lyman is a mother raising a beautiful and smart daughter with Down syndrome. She is the author of the children's book, "Have a Little Faith'', about all her daughter's accomplishments. She is an advocate for all people with special needs and is actively involved in awareness, support, and fundraising groups. She is a teacher with more than twenty years experience. You've Got it in You
You may be worried about breastfeeding and worried that it might 'not work'. This is a common feeling when you live in a society where breastfeeding is often sabotaged by incorrect information, patchy support from a stretched health service and powerful messages from formula companies. But it's not a feeling that is entirely logical. We are mammals. We get our name from the dangly milk-producing bits. It defines us. I'm writing this book because I would like you to be as well-prepared as possible. I would like you to breastfeed for as long as you want to and as happily as possible. I want you to feel supported. Some of this new life with baby will be about flexibility and responsiveness and acceptance. If you are used to a world of schedules and decisions and goals, it may be a bit of a shock. Learn about human biology before you think it sounds bit too scary. Babies are the products of millions of years are evolution and we are too, if we can just tap into our instincts and trust them a little bit. Success comes when we tap into those instincts and when we know when to get help when our instincts aren't answering all of our questions. Can everyone who wants to breastfeed make it work? No. It may not work out for every single person. Not everyone may be able to exclusively breastfeed due to medical issues. Most of these people can give their baby breastmilk though and I'll talk this through as well. And let's not start this journey by imagining you'll be someone who won't make it.

Learning As I Go
Simple snippets of time when we are engaged mindlessly with our children seem insignificant. But are they, really? A broken train track and a sobbing child create the perfect equation for a lesson on trusting God with all of our broken places. Questions about the abandoned slide on the playground turn into a quest to reawaken lost dreams and passions from years ago. And a simple trip to the grocery store might teach all about perspectives and heart changes. It's in these everyday moments that we experience the little winks and nudges from our Heavenly Father. These timeless lessons and deep spiritual truths burn an impression on our hearts that can only be divine. God not only blesses us with our children, but He uses them in our lives to teach us how to become more like Him.

Nine Golden Months
Heng Ou, Amely Greeven, and Marisa Belger, the bestselling authors of The First Forty Days and Awakening Fertility, encourage mothers-to-be to care for themselves--and not just their babies--during pregnancy. There is so much noise surrounding pregnancy and birth. There are countless books teeming with information--what test does what, the "rights" and "wrongs" of eating, and "safe" or "risky" lifestyle choices--but few that hold a woman through the experience, acting as an elder sister, a matriarch, or as a circle of women might hold her--with compassion, nonjudgment, and, most of all, wisdom. To the authors of Nine Golden Months, this is exactly what's needed now, in an era of high-speed living, endless demands, and more than a little anxiety and fear. A woman needs to feel connected to others, rooted in the knowledge that many have done this before her, and calmed and fortified by time-honored practices that nourish her body, soothe her mind, and hold up her spirit. The (still-growing) success of The First Forty Days showed that women are longing to experience the deeper aspects of becoming a mother. Nine Golden Months shares timeless guidance from the authors' extraordinary circle of practitioners, guides, and wisdom-keepers specializing in prenatal care; it draws from Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, and features rituals and self-sourced wisdom, so that it addresses all aspects of a woman's pregnancy experience: emotional, mental, physiological, and spiritual. Includes color photographs

Girl Dad
No father-daughter relationship is exactly alike. What is universal, however, is that the father-daughter relationship is a special one. Fathers are their daughters' first example of what to expect in their interactions with the other male figures in their lives, and with their words and actions, they impart significant lessons to their daughters. Likewise, daughters have much to teach their fathers.Girl Dad: Voices, Lessons, and Reflections from Black Men on Positive Parenting is an exhibit of the beautiful journey that it is to father daughters, however that looks. In Girl Dad, Ashanti Foster and eleven black fathers share their stories of the joys, challenges, and lessons from their father-daughter relationships. Giving black fathers and daughters alike opportunities to reflect on their dynamics, Girl Dad illustrates the transformative power of being a Girl Dad and the critical role fathers play in forming strong, smart, beautiful black girls and women.

Surviving the System
Surviving the System: Nine Siblings Tell Their Foster Care Stories is an important and necessary memoir that leads the reader through the harrowing-and often horrific-experiences of these siblings who were removed from their home in northern New Brunswick in the 1960s. The children were separated, spread out across the province, and left in the hands of adults who frequently turned out to be monsters. Coming from a poor, abusive household, the siblings had few positive past experiences to guide them through the traumas they suffered in the homes of those who were supposed to protect them. Overseen by an incompetent and often neglectful social worker, little of the atrocities they experienced was properly documented or preserved, and few records of what the children suffered remain. Despite the trauma, the siblings managed to stay in each other's lives, and still lean on each other today for support and comfort. This book serves as an act of bravery and a powerful truth-telling; it lays bare what the foster care system that so failed this family tried to cover up. It is truly a story of survival.

Interview with the Autist
Neurodiversity has reached the mainstream modern working world, and the workplace. Yet for neurodiversity at work, there is neurodiverse hiring, but in neurodiverse hiring, there is the interview for the job role with a neurodivergent candidate. Without neurodiverse accommodations, a neurodivergent candidate can not show their skills or abilities, fail in the job interview; and not get an offer for the job role. An interview with a neurodivergent candidate must include and provide neurodiverse accommodations. This is illustrated by the author examining and discussing interviews he had in the past and the ultimate failure. The author, a neurodivergent, and an autist shares his experiences with neurodiverse accommodations in interviewing in the high-tech industry as a senior software development engineer.

Sadness, Laughter, and Hope
Sadness, Laughter, and Hope: Autism Through a Mother's Eyes is primarily about my son's diagnosis of autism, and the changes and difficulties my family has gone through over the years. It covers the time period from the start of our notice of a change in his behavior in 1981 to present day. This book relays my fears as a parent and how I eventually came to terms with his condition.I started writing this book because autism has become so prevalent and I wanted to help others who were experiencing the same things I have gone through. My son is now thirty-four years old, so I had a lot of information stuck in my head. This is my first attempt as an author. I would like my next book to be about how autism affects siblings. Jacqueline Sweetney lives in Rockville, Maryland. She is a system administrator in the telecommunications field. When time permits, she reads between twenty and thirty books a week.

The Children Money Can Buy
The Children Money Can Buy covers decades of dramatic societal change in foster care and adoption, including the pendulum swings regarding open adoption and attitudes toward birth parents, the gradual acceptance of gay and lesbian adoption, the proliferation of unregulated adoption facilitators in the U.S., ethical concerns related to international adoption, and the role money inevitably plays in the foster care and adoption systems. Special attention is given to the practice of "baby brokering" and the accompanying exorbitant finder's fees and financial incentives encouraging birth mothers to relinquish (or pretend that they are planning to relinquish) their babies that permeate much of U.S. infant adoption today. The Children Money Can Buy illuminates the worlds of foster care and adoption through the personal stories Moody witnessed and experienced in her many years working in the foster care and adoption systems. These compelling stories about real people and situations illustrate larger life lessons about the way our society values--and fails to value--parents and children. They explore the root of ethical problems which are not only financially driven but reflect society's basic belief that some children are more valuable than others. Finally, Moody makes a plea for change and gives suggestions about how the foster care and adoption systems could work together for the benefit of children and families.
