Letters from America 1833-1838
Wilhelm H羹bsch's Letters from America offers a fascinating and detailed view into the life and struggles on the American frontier. H羹bsch emigrated to America in 1833 on the Olbers, a 152-foot long sailing ship, as a member of the Mainzer Emigration Society. His decision to venture to the new world was founded upon a sense of adventure, compelled by political circumstances and encouragement of glowing reports of a better life in America. His letters begin with a description of the 55-day trip that took members of the society to New Orleans, and up the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers to Little Rock. There the settlers faced illness and hardship, compounded by unhealthy air and bad weather. Struggling to establish themselves, a full third of the company ended up in the grave within three years. Survivors who were able departed. Like most of them, Wilhelm was unable to sell his possessions when he left America. Wilhelm's enthusiasm evaporated as his health and resources were depleted. Enfeebled and disheartened, Wilhelm ultimately resolved to regain what he had left behind, a loving supportive family and the pursuit of a career.
Journal of the Plague Year (2020)
The original Journal of the Plague Year was written by Daniel Defoe in 1639. Plagues have been a recurrent fact of life since humans have existed. A virus or a bacterium makes the jump either from an animal or from a tribe who have long been habituated to the organism, and this novel infection races through the newly exposed populace, and a huge die-off of the new hosts occurs. The last major event was the Spanish influenza at the end of WWI. There have been events of concern such as SARS and Ebola, with other lesser events such as H1N1, MERS, and Hong Kong flu. While these potentially were a major problem, the Wuhan virus has turned out to be a new plague of disastrous dimensions. It remains to be seen if the catastrophic subsequent events were due to the virus itself or the hysterical overreaction to it. As an experienced doctor, with a large active clinical practice, I found I was often being asked the same questions as many patients were totally confused by the media and the changing and contradictory pronouncement from politicians and public health. I found I was answering so many questions in the office and on Facebook that it came to me, in April of 2020, that what I was doing was in fact compiling a "Journal of a Plague Year." This book is a collection of sequential posts, almost all completely unedited. Also included were some questions and my answers.

Another Side of Ethel Smyth
Ethel Smyth was a prolific author, including volumes of autobiographical writing, and was herself the subject of biography. After a brief introduction to the family and social context of the letters, this volume therefore can focus on the relationship and exchange of ideas between 'ES' and Elizabeth Williamson, the grand-daughter of Ethel's eldest sister Mary Hunter. In part thanks to her great-aunt, Elizabeth's Edwardian childhood led not to marriage but to a degree, work at the University of London Observatory, and the freedom to continue her studies in classical Greek. In their correspondence the two women talk about books, theatre, travel, current affairs and personal philosophies, as well as friendships and family life with all their problems and rivalries and, of course, dogs. All against the backdrop of an interleaving aristocratic, political, academic, literary and business world. The letters themselves, clearly valued by Elizabeth, almost perished three times - including once after the editor of the collection had herself inherited them. This volume is a selection, with the bulk of the collection now in the Beinecke Library at Yale.

Bushmen, Botany and Baking Bread: Mary Pocock's record of a journey with Dorothea Bleek across Angola in 1925 presents the record of a remarkable overland journey documented by the botanist Mary Agard Pocock and illustrated, in colour, with her photographs, sketches and paintings of southern Angola, its people and its plants. The purpose of the six-month-long expedition, by boat, on foot and by machila, was primarily for the renowned ethnologist Dorothea Bleek to collect ethnographic information of the last remaining Bushmen of the region. Besides her role as aide-de-camp, Mary Pocock's intention was to study the flora. She collected almost 1000 plant specimens from this virtually unexplored region, several of which proved to be new to science.A talented artist and photographer, Pocock also described, painted and photographed Bushmen in their villages. These are unique and rare representations of daily activities such as spinning cotton, preparing food, forging metal, playing musical instruments and dancing. Her meticulous daily travel account, glass plate slides, negatives, sketches and paintings have now been rescued from oblivion and collated, edited and presented here for the first time. Bushmen, Botany and Baking Bread will appeal to those interested in Bushmen ethnology, African botany, early 20th century African travel, and not least the significance of gender in scientific exploration of that era.

Aware that her thoughts could put her in danger with German authorities, she never wrote her name on the diary and ran to hide it every time the "Boches" came to inspect the house. The diary survived the war and ended up in a Belgian archive, forgotten for nearly a century until historians Sophie De Schaepdrijver and Tammy M. Proctor discovered it and the remarkable woman who wrote it: Mary Thorp, a middle-aged English governess working for a wealthy Belgian-Russian family in Brussels. Aus der Einleitung von Mich癡le Fleury-Seemuller Zeichen der Hoffnung Fast f羹nfzig Jahre lang blieb das Tagebuch von Friedel Bohny-Reiter in der Schublade liegen. Als ich mir bewu?t wurde, da? es verschwinden k繹nnte und man nie davon erfahren w羹rde, da? eine junge Schweizer Frau 1942 in einem Interniertenlager im S羹den Frankreichs als Krankenschwester gearbeitet hat, wollte ich sie kennenlernen. Ich besuchte sie in Basel, wo sie seit vielen Jahren mit ihrem Mann wohnt, den sie seinerzeit in Frankreich kennenlernte. Sie ist achtzig Jahre alt und malt - viele Landschaften, die W羹ste Algeriens, die Camargue, Erinnerungen ihrer zahlreichen Reisen - und heute noch Bilder vom Lager in Rivesaltes. Sie schreibt weiter in ihrem Tagebuch, wie sie es seit ihrer Jugend tut. Sie vertraute mir zwei dicke Schulhefte an, ein blaues und ein braunes. Das erste beginnt mit einer Notiz vom 6. Juli 1940 in Florenz, wo Friedel als Kinderschwester in einer italienischen Familie arbeitete und endet mit dem 13. Dezember 1941 im Interniertenlager in Rivesaltes. Das andere, viel dicker, handelt fast ausschlie?lich von ihrer Arbeit im Lager bis zu dessen Schlie?ung Ende 1942. Ich war tief ber羹hrt, als ich diese Hefte las. In meiner Hand war ein Dokument, das von einer schrecklichen Zeit sprach. Tag f羹r Tag notiert Friedel das Leiden der Internierten - ihren Kampf gegen Krankheit, Schmutz, Unterern瓣hrung und vom August 1942 an gegen den Abtransport der Juden - M瓣nner, Frauen und Kinder -, der in die Todeslager f羹hrte. Zugleich entdeckte ich in der Autorin eine junge Frau, die nicht aufh繹rte, in diesem Elend ein Zeichen der Hoffnung zu suchen, die sich 羹ber einen Strau? Papierblumen freute, den ihr ein Kind hingestreckt hatte, 羹ber einen Sonnenaufgang, 羹ber H羹ndchen, die im Lager geboren werden. Als die Spannungen am gr繹?ten waren, lernte sie August Bohny kennen, ihren k羹nftigen Mann, der in Chambon-sur-Lignon f羹r die Heime der Kinderhilfe verantwortlich war. Es handelt sich also

"Ein gro?er Wunsch von mir war, Soldat zu werden, um Vater im Krieg Gesellschaft leisten zu k繹nnen", erz瓣hlt Nana, die im Jahr 1945 acht Jahre alt ist. Hinter Nana verbirgt sich die Kinderbuchautorin Margaret Kopsch, die in diesem Buch sich und andere Zeitzeugen zu Wort kommen l瓣sst, die w瓣hrend des Krieges Kinder waren. Sie erinnern sich daran, wie am Nikolaustag nach der Bombardierung die Stadt Gie?en brannte, wie ein j羹disches M瓣dchen aus der Schule pl繹tzlich weg war, wie es nach einem Luftangriff auf einmal keine Schule mehr gab oder wie sie eines Nachts das Zuhause in Ostpreu?en verlassen mussten. Den Zeitzeugenberichten der Kriegskinder, die sie interviewt hat, stellt die Autorin die Briefe ihres Vaters aus Russland gegen羹ber, der sich um seine Frau und seine Kinder sorgt, den harten Alltag der Soldaten schildert und Weihnachten an der Front beschreibt. In den Berichten und den Briefen spiegelt sich das Grauen einer Zeit, die vor allem in den Kinderseelen ihre schmerzlichen Spuren hinterlassen hat.
Liebe Tante Ivy ...
V繹llig unerwartet ist Golden Retrieverh羹ndin Ivy gestorben. Sie hatte Krebs, der bis kurz vor ihrem Tod unbemerkt geblieben war. Frauchen und Herrchen sind ersch羹ttert und untr繹stlich, dass ihr "Wichtel", wie sie Ivy nannten, pl繹tzlich nicht mehr da ist. Und auch Paige, die j羹ngere Goldenh羹ndin im Hause Izykowski, vermisst ihre Tante Ivy ganz schrecklich und sie wei? oft nicht, wie sie ohne sie klar kommen soll. Paige hat ein Jahr lang Briefe an Tante Ivy geschrieben, ihr erz瓣hlt, wie sich das Leben ohne sie nun anf羹hlt, und wie sie es schafft, weiter zu machen.
