Shuller campaigned for setting the maximum number of missions for air crews to fly in a combat tour and argued for the elimination of "Maximum Effort" missions that forced them back to base from furloughs and passes. Shuller's diary brings his wartime experience back to life. His descriptions of the journey across the North Atlantic in the nose of a B-17 Flying Fortress are vivid and personal. His accounts about life among the British during the war bring a fresh look at the air war as it emerged from the pleasant meadowlands of East Anglia. Letters from America 1833-1838
Wilhelm H羹bsch's Letters from America offers a fascinating and detailed view into the life and struggles on the American frontier. H羹bsch emigrated to America in 1833 on the Olbers, a 152-foot long sailing ship, as a member of the Mainzer Emigration Society. His decision to venture to the new world was founded upon a sense of adventure, compelled by political circumstances and encouragement of glowing reports of a better life in America. His letters begin with a description of the 55-day trip that took members of the society to New Orleans, and up the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers to Little Rock. There the settlers faced illness and hardship, compounded by unhealthy air and bad weather. Struggling to establish themselves, a full third of the company ended up in the grave within three years. Survivors who were able departed. Like most of them, Wilhelm was unable to sell his possessions when he left America. Wilhelm's enthusiasm evaporated as his health and resources were depleted. Enfeebled and disheartened, Wilhelm ultimately resolved to regain what he had left behind, a loving supportive family and the pursuit of a career.

The original Journal of the Plague Year was written by Daniel Defoe in 1639. Plagues have been a recurrent fact of life since humans have existed. A virus or a bacterium makes the jump either from an animal or from a tribe who have long been habituated to the organism, and this novel infection races through the newly exposed populace, and a huge die-off of the new hosts occurs. The last major event was the Spanish influenza at the end of WWI. There have been events of concern such as SARS and Ebola, with other lesser events such as H1N1, MERS, and Hong Kong flu. While these potentially were a major problem, the Wuhan virus has turned out to be a new plague of disastrous dimensions. It remains to be seen if the catastrophic subsequent events were due to the virus itself or the hysterical overreaction to it. As an experienced doctor, with a large active clinical practice, I found I was often being asked the same questions as many patients were totally confused by the media and the changing and contradictory pronouncement from politicians and public health. I found I was answering so many questions in the office and on Facebook that it came to me, in April of 2020, that what I was doing was in fact compiling a "Journal of a Plague Year." This book is a collection of sequential posts, almost all completely unedited. Also included were some questions and my answers.
