The Bridegroom Was a Dog
Masterfully turning the rules of folklore and fable on their head, The Bridegroom Was a Dog is a disarming and unforgettable modern classic. Its initial publication in 1998 garnered admiration from The New Yorker, which praised it as a "fast-moving, mysteriously compelling tale that has the dream quality of Kafka." The Bridegroom Was a Dog begins with a schoolteacher telling a fable to her students. In the fable, a princess promises her hand in marriage to a dog that has licked her bottom clean. The story takes an even stranger twist when that very dog appears to the schoolteacher in real life as a doglike man. A romantic -- and sexual -- courtship develops, much to the chagrin of her friends, who have suspicions about the man's identity.

Violet Thistlewaite Is Not a Villain Anymore
A powerful plant witch and a grumpy alchemist must work together to save their quiet town from a magical plague in this debut cozy fantasy romance about starting over, redemption, and what it really means to be a good person. Guy Shadowfade is dead, and after a lifetime as the dark sorcerer's right-hand, Violet Thistlewaite is determined to start over--not as the fearsome Thornwitch, but as someone kind. Someone better. Someone good. The quaint town of Dragon's Rest, Violet decides, will be her second chance--she'll set down roots, open a flower shop, keep her sentient (mildly homicidal) houseplant in check, and prune dark magic from the twisted boughs of her life. Violet's vibrant bouquets and cheerful enchantments soon charm the welcoming townsfolk, though nothing seems to impress the prickly yet dashingly handsome Nathaniel Marsh, an alchemist sharing her greenhouse. With a struggling business and his own second chance seemingly out of reach, Nathaniel has no time for flowers or frippery--and certainly none for the intriguing witch next door. When a mysterious blight endangers every living plant in Dragon's Rest, Violet and Nathaniel must work together, through their fears, pasts, and growing feelings for one another, to save their community. But with a figure from her previous life knocking at her door and her secrets threatening to uproot everything she's worked so hard to grow, Violet can't help but wonder...does a former villain truly deserve a happily-ever-after?
Pinocchio and the Village of Wooden Hearts
The Whispering Tree reimagines the timeless Pinocchio myth as a lyrical meditation on what it means to be alive. This is no longer the story of a wooden boy who wanted to become human. It is the story of a human who learned to belong to the world. In this quiet, poetic retelling, Pinocchio's final transformation is not into flesh, but into life itself - into rhythm, memory, and the roots that connect all living things. When he becomes a tree, he does not lose his soul.He gives it away: to the wind, the soil, and the people who still need it.Blending fairytale and philosophy, The Whispering Tree speaks to readers who seek beauty in stillness and meaning in change. It reminds us that love does not end with one body, that compassion can outgrow the self, and that everything we cherish continues - only in a different form. For admirers of poetic fiction, literary fables, and reflective stories that stay with you long after the final page, this book offers a quiet revelation: Being human is not a state of being, but an act - the act of listening, caring, and breathing with the world.

Fables from the South Seas
I hope you feel the Trade Winds, I hope you breathe in the salty sea air, and I hope you feel the ocean tide pull at your feet as you walk the shores with me. If you listen to your heartbeat, you will hear the island drums, their beat pulsing through your own veins, connecting you to your own fables from your own family or ancestors. My goal in creating this book was to create a moment of immersion, one of cultural diversity, and one that we can all belong to. As the words fell into place, each story delivering a motto. Gradually, Fables of the South Pacific took shape. When I first saw the photo that is now the book cover, it stopped me in my tracks, as it reminded me of the many beaches I have walked over my lifetime, for we are the privileged spectators of the universal beauty that surrounds us all.

Tales of the North American Indians

The Laurel
In The Laurel, the gods and the mortals interplay, and both will learn a valuable lesson about love and life, a lesson that will forever be told. Zeus, after bedding and impregnating the fair Titaness Leto, becomes father to twins: Apollo and Artemis. Unlike his other "bastard" children, Apollo and Artemis are made into gods, an event which will set the course for the rest of the story.Artemis has never forgotten the heartache that her mother suffered at the hands of her father Zeus, and as such, she wishes to leave a solitary life, away from men and love and relationships. Though she stands firm in her conviction, moments bubble up in her that are full of yearning.Apollo, who has never been seen without a smile on his face, is much more fanciful and wanting than Artemis. He wantslove, and he wants it in a big way. Having loved and lost love, Apollo believes he has found it again with the beautiful nymph, Daphne. He quickly learns, however, that she has made a vow to celibacy. But that doesn't matter to Apollo; his love for her is so profound that he asks her to be his companion, to live with him just so that he can be near her.Apollo's lifelong wish is about to come true, but people on the fringes of his life have other plans. Those plans not only thwart what could be the love of a lifetime for Apollo, but it also will be the catalyst to which both gods and mortals will learn how much one should love, how much one should consider the feelings of the one coveted.

F*cked Up Fairy Tales
Based on the wildly popular web series, F*cked Up Fairy Tales presents modern retellings of some of the strangest and darkest stories humans had the audacity to invent. Inspired by sources from around the world, "Cosbrarian" Liz Gotauco conjures gossipy animals, homicidal royals, doomed commoners, and shape-shifting beaux--all reckoning with complicated, adult problems that "Disney versions" have sanitized. F*cked Up Fairy Tales explores timeless themes that have long tickled the human subconscious, from accidental bestiality ("So . . . You Married an Animal") and catastrophic marriages ("Crappily Ever After") to the vexed question of what to do with your murderous lindworm child ("F*cked Up Family Trees"). Gotauco highlights the not-so-distressed damsels and overlooked voices of folklore, including heroes like the Philippines' unlucky-in-love goddess Maria Makiling, India's clever Princess Kalendrin, and Chile's no-nonsense Snow White. She also teases and topples fairy tale tropes: for every wicked stepmother there's a gaslighting sorcerer; for every royal wedding there's an embarrassingly public breakup; childhood lessons of idleness, innocence, and piety are put on hold for questions about lust, aging, and divine poetic justice. And her deeply researched yet hilarious asides offer insight into the stories' contested origins and spill deliciously weird details about fairy tale authors like Madame d'Aulnoy and the Brothers Grimm.Sexy, disturbing, and outrageous, with stylish, distinctive illustrations, F*cked Up Fairy Tales celebrates the astonishing diversity of the oral tradition, reaffirming our universal love for a story that's messy as f*ck.

A Bridge to the Other Side
A Bridge to the Other Side is a collection of articles and traditional folk tales that deal with our feelings about and attitudes towards Death, both our own death and that of those nearest and dearest to us. A bridge between earth and heaven, this world and the next, features in the mythology of many different peoples. For example, in Norse legends, Bifr繹st or Bilr繹st is a burning rainbow bridge between Midgard, the world, and Asgard, the realm of the gods. The bridge is known as Bilr繹st in the Poetic Edda; compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and as Bifr繹st in the Prose Edda; written in the 13th century by Snorri Stureuson. Both the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda alternately refer to the bridge as Asbr繳 (Old Norse ?sirs means bridge). The Persians believed in a bridge between earth and paradise too. In his prayers the penitent in his confession would say: I am wholly without doubt in the existence of the Mazdaya癟nian faith; in the coming of the resurrection of the latter body; in the stepping over the bridge Chinvat; as well as in the continuance of paradise.
