The Ghost Trio
A story set in Prague that crosses the lines between the living and the dead. The great love of your life is dead, but that doesn't stop him from communicating with you--or luring you to join him in the afterlife. To remain safe in this world, you accept the help of a professional medium who develops his own emotional agenda. The Ghost Trio that emerges takes us to pre- and post-World War II Prague where a poignant and chilling love triangle finds its resolution. There we meet great Czech creators of the past including Leos Jan獺cek and Karel Capek. Inspired by the ghost stories of Henry James and Daphne du Maurier, Clyde Derrick introduces three characters whose passions defy time and the accepted boundaries between the dead and the living. The author, who has lived in and visited purportedly haunted sites in advance of writing this novella, contends that this story and its characters found him. Meanwhile, his portrayal of two Pragues--one poised to fall to Hitler's army, the other muted by Communist oppression--offers us insights into the past and reminds us to stay vigilant against dangerous politics. The Ghost Trio is a spiritual excursion in which we ponder the limitations and hazards of romantic love as well as the possibility of other lives in other times. The Ghost Trio is the winner of the 2020 Omnidawn Fabulist Fiction Chapbook / Novelette Contest, chosen by Molly Gloss.
The Ghastling
A beautifully designed modern day penny dreadful. This issue is guaranteed to slip you a bit of the weird, the uncomfortable, the creepy, topped up with a garnish of terror. Nine short stories designed to raise the hair on the back of your neck, twist your perspective and leave you with a funny feeling in your gut. In Warren Benedetto's 'Uncle Pumpkin's Tongue', a seemingly innocent fairground ride turns into something revoltingly sinister. In Paul Buchanan's thoroughly disturbing tale, 'The Bynum Girl', a community anticipates the release of one of its most terrifying members: a girl who once tormented them all. JP Relph's mind bending story, 'Delirus', tells of a doll, kept out of sight in the basement of a house gathering dust. She is discovered by a little girl who becomes quite taken with her. But what the little dolly harbours inside will make your skin crawl... Reggie Chamberlain-King's, 'Living With It', is a deeply troubling story of a mother unravelling in her domestic surroundings. Has she really just committed the most unmotherly act? Where is her son, really? Rory Say's thought provoking story, 'The Other Door', tells of a boy who keeps finding a door in strange places, but one that he cannot ever open. In Mark Blayney's, eerie story, 'Coin, Mirror, Manoeuvre', a man lives alone in the woods surrounded by his memories of an unrecognisable past - familiar, yet, unfamiliar. Something utterly life-changing has happened, but what? And which version of events is correct... ? 'The Catafalque' by Victoria Dowd is a spine-chilling story of a couple who convert a disused chapel, novel indeed, but is it ever a good idea to use a catafalque as a dining table? In Eve Chancellor's story inspired by true events, 'The Resurrection Man', a corpse-hauler delivering freshly dead bodies receives a visit from someone unexpected prompting a series of disturbing events. It is 1916 in Neil A. Wilson's, 'In the Bleak Midwinter', and an invalid soldier is convalescing in Marsham Hall after a mustard gas attack. He should be improving but the nightmares keep leaking in, getting worse, almost as though something is tormenting him on purpose...

The Willows
English author Algernon Blackwood first published "The Willows" in his 1907 book The Listener and Other Stories. It is one of Blackwood's best-known works and has impacted a lot of writers after him. It was regarded by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft is the best supernatural story ever written in English. "The Willows" is a work of early modern horror that belongs to the strange fiction literary tradition. In the middle of their canoe expedition down the Danube, two buddies. Blackwood gives the river, the sun, and the wind strong and eventually menacing personalities throughout the narrative. The most foreboding trees are the dense, sullen, terrifying willows because they "moved of their own will as though alive, and they touched, by some immeasurable means, my own piercing sense of the horrible," moving as though they were alive. The mysterious beings in "The Willows," whose exact nature is unknown, include a new order of experience that is truly unearthly, as well as a realm "where tremendous things go on without ceasing...vast purposes...that deal directly with the soul, and not indirectly with trivial representations of the soul." They occasionally appear malicious or treacherous, while other times they are just mystical and almost divine.

The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent, a collection of 34 essays and short stories by American author Washington Irving, contains the gothic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." penned while Irving was a foreign resident of Birmingham, England. The first edition of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'' appeared in 1819. "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," along with Irving's companion work "Rip Van Winkle," is one of the earliest works of American literature that has maintained enduring popularity, particularly around Halloween because of a figure known as the Headless Horseman who is thought to be a Hessian soldier who was severed by a cannonball during battle. Walt Disney created a second film adaption in 1949 as one of two episodes in the package movie The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. The story takes place in 1790 in a remote valley known as Sleepy Hollow, in the countryside near the Dutch hamlet of Tarry Town (actual Tarrytown, New York). Sleepy Hollow is well known for its ghosts and the eerie ambiance that captures both its residents and visitors' imaginations. While on a trip to Europe, Irving created The Sketch Book, and elements of the story can also be attributed to that continent.
When Two Worlds Collide
These stories will grab your attention until the end of each tale. The characters may be different, but at some point, their lives cross into a parallel world. The twists and turns of fate guide the reader into a world of ghosts and goblins, where murderers lie in wait for the unsuspecting. You'll never know what's to come, and that's just how the author likes it. There's coach trippers, who die one by one - by why and by whose hand? A killer strikes at a Harry Potter exhibition in Oxford: Druids challenge Druids, and the Green Man himself appears in their midst: a group of friends die in horrific circumstances, and a toy figure is always found lying by the victim - perhaps the names Scarlet, Mustard, Plum seem familiar: a ventriloquist's dummy is not at all what he seems and a dead and buried girl just won't die, until she catches her murderer. Of course, there's normal people too, who bring humour and pathos into the tales - well, there'd have to be, wouldn't there, or you'd never believe what you're reading or hearing! It's all part of the magic of mystery - and you're the magician, who gets to unlocks it.

The Ghost Ship
The weather had appeared more than menacing all day. The sea was now rising, and Neptune's white horses had already started to gallop over the crests of the rising billows. All the galaxies of heaven were now present above, replacing the two or three unusual sentinels that had previously protruded from the firmament. Our second mate, Garry O'Neil, perished at sea while sailing the Star of the North. He had fled to the sea as a child before attending medical school in Dublin. After his mother passed away, he abandoned his newly-acquired dignity and went back to the sea since he felt no longer beholden to anything at home. The settings, the ship in the distance with its flag partially up, the light of the setting sun, and the resemblance of my boat then and now brought back memories of that special evening.
