The Willows
English author Algernon Blackwood first published "The Willows" in his 1907 book The Listener and Other Stories. It is one of Blackwood's best-known works and has impacted a lot of writers after him. It was regarded by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft is the best supernatural story ever written in English. "The Willows" is a work of early modern horror that belongs to the strange fiction literary tradition. In the middle of their canoe expedition down the Danube, two buddies. Blackwood gives the river, the sun, and the wind strong and eventually menacing personalities throughout the narrative. The most foreboding trees are the dense, sullen, terrifying willows because they "moved of their own will as though alive, and they touched, by some immeasurable means, my own piercing sense of the horrible," moving as though they were alive. The mysterious beings in "The Willows," whose exact nature is unknown, include a new order of experience that is truly unearthly, as well as a realm "where tremendous things go on without ceasing...vast purposes...that deal directly with the soul, and not indirectly with trivial representations of the soul." They occasionally appear malicious or treacherous, while other times they are just mystical and almost divine.

The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent, a collection of 34 essays and short stories by American author Washington Irving, contains the gothic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." penned while Irving was a foreign resident of Birmingham, England. The first edition of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'' appeared in 1819. "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," along with Irving's companion work "Rip Van Winkle," is one of the earliest works of American literature that has maintained enduring popularity, particularly around Halloween because of a figure known as the Headless Horseman who is thought to be a Hessian soldier who was severed by a cannonball during battle. Walt Disney created a second film adaption in 1949 as one of two episodes in the package movie The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. The story takes place in 1790 in a remote valley known as Sleepy Hollow, in the countryside near the Dutch hamlet of Tarry Town (actual Tarrytown, New York). Sleepy Hollow is well known for its ghosts and the eerie ambiance that captures both its residents and visitors' imaginations. While on a trip to Europe, Irving created The Sketch Book, and elements of the story can also be attributed to that continent.
The Year of the Storm
In this haunting, suspenseful debut novel, John Mantooth takes readers to a town in rural Alabama where secrets are buried deep, reality is relative, and salvation requires a desperate act of faith. When Danny was fourteen, his mother and sister disappeared during a violent storm. The police were baffled. There were no clues, and most people figured they were dead. Only Danny still holds out hope that they'll return. Months later, a disheveled Vietnam vet named Walter Pike shows up at Danny's front door, claiming to know their whereabouts. The story he tells is so incredible that Danny knows he shouldn't believe him. Others warn him about Walter Pike's dark past, his shameful flight from town years ago, and the suspicious timing of his return. But he's Danny's last hope, and Danny needs to believe..."Powerful, dark, and heartfelt. The Year of the Storm is a wonderful coming of age novel by a very talented new writer. An astounding debut."-John Rector, Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author of Already Gone, The Grove, and The Cold Kiss"A dark and mysterious southern-gothic story with hints of Tom Franklin's Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter and Stephen King's novella The Body, John Mantooth's voice is masculine and powerful, flavoring the pages with the Alabama wilderness, the turmoil of family and how all of these elements work to shape and nurture teenage boys into men."-Frank Bill, author of Crimes in Southern Indiana and Donnybrook "As strong a debut novel as any I've read in a long time. It's frightening and sad, vicious and unforgiving, quiet and contemplative. It's a helluva start to what's surely going to be a career worth watching."-fearnet.com"The Year of the Storm by John Mantooth is the very definition of "attention grabber." It is a flat out page turner. It is a rare thriller which combines elements of rural noir, supernatural horror, and is an intense dual coming of age story that is as spellbinding as anything from horror masters such as Stephen King and Laird Barron."-litreactor.com"Masterful foreshadowing... A tough and violent book, but also one with prose that aches with loss."-BooklistJOHN MANTOOTH is the award winning author of two novels and a short story collection. His first novel, The Year of the Storm, was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award. He has also published three crime novels under the pseudonym Hank Early. When Two Worlds Collide
These stories will grab your attention until the end of each tale. The characters may be different, but at some point, their lives cross into a parallel world. The twists and turns of fate guide the reader into a world of ghosts and goblins, where murderers lie in wait for the unsuspecting. You'll never know what's to come, and that's just how the author likes it. There's coach trippers, who die one by one - by why and by whose hand? A killer strikes at a Harry Potter exhibition in Oxford: Druids challenge Druids, and the Green Man himself appears in their midst: a group of friends die in horrific circumstances, and a toy figure is always found lying by the victim - perhaps the names Scarlet, Mustard, Plum seem familiar: a ventriloquist's dummy is not at all what he seems and a dead and buried girl just won't die, until she catches her murderer. Of course, there's normal people too, who bring humour and pathos into the tales - well, there'd have to be, wouldn't there, or you'd never believe what you're reading or hearing! It's all part of the magic of mystery - and you're the magician, who gets to unlocks it.
Untimely Departure

I have to be honest, Daniel McEwen's presence has me on edge.Or maybe it's his sharp fangs that have me running in the other direction. But when a dead body turns up, and it's clearly a setup, I know I can't hang the vampire out to dry-Aunt Thelma taught me better than that, which is why Vance and I are teaming up to tackle this case and clear our friend's name.Unfortunately, more than one person wants the truth to remain a secret, and they'll do whatever it takes to keep us quiet. Can we trace the clues and bring the real killer to justice, or will there be more than one untimely departure?
The Ghost Ship
The weather had appeared more than menacing all day. The sea was now rising, and Neptune's white horses had already started to gallop over the crests of the rising billows. All the galaxies of heaven were now present above, replacing the two or three unusual sentinels that had previously protruded from the firmament. Our second mate, Garry O'Neil, perished at sea while sailing the Star of the North. He had fled to the sea as a child before attending medical school in Dublin. After his mother passed away, he abandoned his newly-acquired dignity and went back to the sea since he felt no longer beholden to anything at home. The settings, the ship in the distance with its flag partially up, the light of the setting sun, and the resemblance of my boat then and now brought back memories of that special evening.
Spooked Solid
Happy Halloween!Welcome to the best holiday of the year.Or I thought it was until the tricks began to outweigh the treats. Frog curses, poisoned candy apples, and a wayward vampire are only the half of it. Add in a two-hundred-year-old curse, a depressed poltergeist, and a dead body, and you can see why my enthusiasm for the witchiest day of the year is waning. Not cool, Halloween Hijacker. Not cool.Which is why you can bet your wand I'm not going to go down without a fight, even if my actions land me in grave danger.
The Ghost Of Guir House
American author Charles Willing Beale's horror book The Ghost of Guir House was first released in 1897. This is a pretty erratic "story" that alternates between a theosophical philosophy explanation and a gothic romance. A captivating romantic plot is balanced by a sense of mystery and possibly even evil, and there are three main characters that are really well-developed despite being slightly quirky. The plot is kept alive by the author until the very end of the book, but it is shelved by protracted discussions on occult concepts like hypnotism and emanationist between two of the characters. The book starts out as a respectable ghost story before turning into a societal critique that extols the virtues of socialism. Charles Willing Beale wrote a gritty mystery romance titled The Ghost of Guir House. But instead of writing in the traditional Gothic style, the author explores moral, psychological, and then theosophical considerations. Long conversations between the three people in the book-who are encased in a spooky house-include the author's thoughts.

It has an intellectual quality that is quite reminiscent of The Turn of the Screw." - Nashville Banner"Entirely worth the reading. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, Calder-Marshall has concocted so convincing a one you will willingly suspend your disbelief." - Boston Globe

Reverberations
Mysterious happenings are mounting up for Josh, Sean and their estranged alumni. Josh Sandison-Morley was born a sceptic. Why else would he insist there's no such thing as ghosts when he's eliminated every plausible explanation for the noises in his former therapy rooms? Sean Tierney's having some 'performance issues'. His GP says there's no physical reason: his blood pressure is under control, and he's stayed off the booze, ergo it's all in his head. In the circumstances, being a palliative clinical psychologist isn't proving (self-)helpful. Despite two decades of friendship and their grand plans to open a private psychotherapy centre, neither man confides in the other. That is, until news reaches them both, via different avenues, that their experiences are but part of a bizarre cluster of unexplained phenomena, for which there is only one common denominator. Whether real or the product of overwrought imaginations, Josh, Sean and their alumni must lay to rest the spectre of a once-beloved friend...or admit defeat and crawl back under the safe, weighty stones of the jobs and relationships they've left behind.

Half Dead! Half Alive! Rejected! Entry Denied!
Shag surveyed the numerous bullet holes in his body."Fuzz, we've been beat by a hurricane, damn near buried alive in mud, shot several times, died and gone to the Hereafter only to be rejected by both Heaven and Hell cause we hadn't done something we were supposed to do before we got there. Now we aren't dead or alive but something stuck in between."Fuzz thumped the long pitchfork tine sticking out of his chest. A soft, sweet chime sounded."Well, we got one thing going for us old bounty hunters. Bad guys can't kill the dead. So, let's kick some ass!".HALF DEAD! HALF ALIVE! Rejected! Entry denied!
The Haunting of Thornham Staithe
A series of hauntings in a Norfolk town, apparently unrelated, attract little attention until the first death occurs. Even then, it is difficult to link the death, which has not been witnessed by any of the townspeople, to the hauntings in any sensible way. Life goes on until further deaths occur, once again unwitnessed. No one is ready to commit themselves to a point of view and, therefore, a plan of action, because no one wants to be seen to believe in ghosts. Eventually, after the publican's psychic supper has created terror in the medium, two ghost hunters (who prefer to call themselves 'paranormal investigators') are called in by the vicar and events take a turn for the worst: several villagers are threatened, a stranger plays his hand with disastrous consequences, the doctor's wife returns from the dead and the village historian (perhaps the only person who has any chance of understanding the connection between the hauntings) is driven to the edge of sanity. The vicar, who has been a central figure all along, decides he must act with or without his bishop's permission or even his wife's agreement, and decides to call upon the help of an old priest, once the Deliverance Minister of his diocese.

Gold, Ghosts, and Woolly’s
Gold, Ghosts and Woollys is a fictional work, conceived solely for the entertainment of the reader. The story unfolds, to the sheer delight, of a child with a vivid imagination before the age of radio, T.V., telephones, cellphones, and computers. Household electricity was still in the future. Entertainment was tall tale telling.Such was my life, raised by grandparents, about to start school in 1948, a long way from town and all its conveniences. In that long ago age, people still talked to one another. Old folks could still talk to kids - and kids, could still talk to adults. In that long ago age where, God, family, country, and compassion for our fellow man, governed our lives. What affected one, affected all. The isolation of today was unknown back then. Self-reliance and reliance on our fellowman was expected and accepted. Gold Ghosts and Woollys is a fictional portrayal of a time lost in this modern world. My heartfelt hope is that the reader of this tall tale enjoys the view of the world, now lost in today's insanity, posed as progress.
