In Ghostly Japan
In "In Ghostly Japan," Lafcadio Hearn intricately weaves together the cultural fabric of Japan through a series of haunting and evocative tales inspired by local folklore, ghost stories, and spiritual beliefs. Hearn's prose is marked by its lyrical beauty and immersive quality, drawing readers into a surreal world where the supernatural seamlessly intertwines with every aspect of daily life. Set against the backdrop of Meiji-era Japan, the book captures a period of profound transformation, highlighting how ancient traditions and modernity coexist and often collide in the human experience. Lafcadio Hearn, a Greek-Irish writer who became a naturalized Japanese citizen, sought to bridge Eastern and Western cultures through his vivid storytelling. His deep fascination with Japan's mystical elements and religious traditions was rooted in his experiences as an outsider, allowing him to observe and reflect on the culture with both curiosity and respect. Hearn's love for Japan is palpable in this work, as he aims to preserve the ephemeral essence of its ghostly tales for future generations. "In Ghostly Japan" is essential reading for anyone interested in Japan's rich cultural tapestry and supernatural lore. Hearn's unique perspective, coupled with his artistic flair, invites readers to explore the depths of Japanese spirituality and folklore, making this collection a timeless and haunting journey into the heart of a nation steeped in mystery.
So... I Met a Ghost
When my parents split up I started drawing pictures of gravestones in a church near my dad's (I know it is weird, get over it), and here is where I met Beth. But I soon found that Beth was no ordinary girl, but she was in fact a ghost. I am not talking creepy ghost, the kind that puts a curse on you, but just an ordinary person really. I soon learned she was being chased by some nasty piece of work, and I soon realised there was only me who would be able to help her.Not only was I going to try to save her from her hunter, but also try to help her move on, go into the light, and all that. Not much to ask, seeing as I was a teenager, was it! In the process I would learn that the 'unknown' was pretty clear, and that some men can be more evil than anything conjured up by the wildest of imaginations.So... I met a Ghost is a sometimes creepy, sometimes funny short novel for young adults by author Paul McAvoy. A page-turner... you will not want to draw breath until the last page is read...

Or, will Jerry, Max and Gunter, discover a truth too frightening to be labeled a mere coincidence?

Down Came a Blackbird
Nominated for the Carnegie Medal. Nicholas Wilde's third novel, Down Came a Blackbird, probes deeply into the mind of an unloved boy, whose nightmares fuse with the lost dreams of those who lived in an old dark house long before he was born. James woke up in pitch darkness. He'd been dreaming. He'd been on his own in a silent black room and a noise had come, scratching its way towards him. He shrank back in his pillow. The noise in his dream was still out there now, outside the window. The blackbird.Nightmares. He'd always had them but they were worse here, more real than ever, in this place he'd been sent to - his great-uncle's house, deep in the country. But one place was the same as any other for thirteen-year-old rejects like him.And now he'd been pushed around for long enough; he was going to get equal. If life could hurt him, he could hurt it back. He'd show every living thing in this house and garden what hurting was really about.Maybe his nightmares would stop then. And maybe the blackbird, that came seeking him out in the darkness, would at last go away. This award-winning, deeply moving and quielty chilling novel was filmed as The Ghost of Greville Lodge, starring George Cole and Prunella Scales.

When a Stranger Comes to Town

"The very best of what crime fiction should deliver." -New York Journal of BooksThe latest Mystery Writers of America story collection, featuring surprising, page-turning twists on the genre from some of the top bestsellers and award winners in crime fictionIt's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories--a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. No matter how or where they appear, strangers are walking mysteries, complete unknowns in once-familiar territories who disrupt our lives with unease and wonder. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers such as Michael Connelly, Dean Koontz and Joe Hill.
Ash Tuesday
In New Orleans, the dead talk and the living listen. Giving ghost tours on the decaying streets of the French Quarter isn't exactly a high-profile career, but the guides at Spirits of Yore Haunted Tours are too strange and troubled to do anything else. They call themselves Quarter Rats, a group of outcasts and dreamers and goths who gather in hole-in-the-wall bars to bicker, spin yarns, and search for belonging in the wee hours of the night after the tourists have staggered home. Through the ghost stories they tell, their own haunted lives come into focus. Like the city they call home, these tour guides are messy with contradiction: they suffer joyfully, live morbidly, and sin to find salvation. Weaving together real New Orleans folklore with the lives of eleven unforgettably vibrant characters, Ash Tuesday is a love letter to America's last true bohemia and the people, both dead and living, who keep its heart beating. With her debut, Blayde has carved out a deep and uber-readable interpretation of what it means to live, love, and grieve in New Orleans."There's something about New Orleans. Maybe you can trace it to Latin America or the Caribbean or maybe not, maybe you can't define it at all. The divine? The diabolical? I don't know what to call it. But there's magic, here."

The Turn of the Screw A very young woman's first job: governess for two weirdly beautiful, strangely distant, oddly silent children, Miles and Flora, at a forlorn estate... An estate haunted by a beckoning evil. Half-seen figures who glare from dark towers and dusty windows- silent, foul phantoms who, day by day, night by night, come closer, ever closer. With growing horror, the helpless governess realizes the fiendish creatures want the children, seeking to corrupt their bodies, possess their minds, own their souls... But worse-much worse- the governess discovers that Miles and Flora have no terror of the lurking evil. For they want the walking dead as badly as the dead want them. And eight other stories of horror!
