Both Sides of the Veil
In "Staunton's Dinner," Vane Staunton returns after an absence of many years and hosts a dinner for his former friends. But they are horrified to find that he is terribly changed and now appears to possess awful powers, including the power to kill a man with only a thought! In the curiously homoerotic "A Knight of the Road," set in 17th century England, a handsome but cold-blooded stranger shows up in a lonely village and just might be the Devil himself! The darkly comical "The Disappearance of Mrs. Macrecham" recounts the strange adventures of Hereward Waller, who finds himself in an awkward predicament when he believes he has turned his landlady into a cat. And in "The Ring," Pugh and Tress from Marsh's earlier collection Curios reprise their roles as they seek to solve the mystery of an apparently cursed 16th century ring. The twelve stories in this volume showcase Marsh's diverse talents and include tales of ghosts, crime, and the occult. As always, the tales are told with Marsh's characteristic blend of horror, mystery, and humour. This edition includes the unabridged text of Marsh's story collection, taken from the exceedingly rare first edition published by Methuen in 1901. Also featured is a reproduction of the original cover.

Morgan Library Ghost Stories
The patron saint - if that's the right word; perhaps guiding spirit? - behind these witty and literate ghost stories is M.R. James (1862-1936). He is primarily known as The Pierpont Morgan Library and at similar august homes of learning as a redoubtable scholar and bibliographer. To many more devotees around the world, though, he is generally acclaimed as the author of some of the most economical, clearly focused, concise, and elegant ghost stories every written. Only the English language serves this genre so well, and James's English craft is at the top of anyone's short list of favorites. "Monty" James enjoyed a long and happy professional relationship with the Morgan Library. He did so, in a sense, only in spirit: he never crossed the Atlantic, and he feared that he would not survive crossing New York's streets. His name was much in evidence when the 150th anniversary of Pierpont Morgan's birth was celebrated several years ago. His work on medieval manuscripts was the focal point of an exhibition held in 1987, and that exhibition gave birth to a strange offspring - a contest for ghost stories connected in some way with the Morgan Library and written in a Jamesian style. This book contains the seven winning stories. Will they make you pleasantly uneasy late at night? Will they make your scalp prickle disturbingly? You'll just have to read them to find out, won't you?

A Vanished Hand and Others
Clotilde Graves was known for challenging convention. In her early years, she was known as the dramatist "Clo Graves", but became better known under her fiction-writing persona, "Richard Dehan". She transgressed contemporary gender norms by dressing in male attire, wearing her hair short, and smoking in public. This border crossing can be seen also in her work, which encompasses a wide variety of forms and modes. And while she wrote relatively few fantastical stories, she was devoted to tales of lingering revenants, mysterious cryptids, and grotesque sciences-often laced with her sardonic sense of humour. This volume seeks to recover this side of Graves's writing by including stories from across her career, which challenge definition and range across the speculative genres.

Voices from the Gray
I have seen many of them over the years. I still recall their aching screams in the dark. What do they want or whom are they looking for? I ask myself these questions as they speak to me from beyond the living world. Some spirits are lost, others are lonely, and then there are entities made of pure malice whose only objective is to cause fear and chaos. Despite my fears and uncertainty, I communicated with them to the best of my ability. If I had not, they would have remained silent within the gray of the shadows.

Oblivion
Where do writers go when they die? The forgotten ones, at least, go to The Cafe of Minor Authors where they drink endless cups of cappuccino, self-obsess, and nurse their shattered dreams. Some authors, it's rumored, can escape Oblivion if they try hard enough to write something the universe can't ignore, even after death. This is the story of one ambitious writer stuck in oblivion who not only risks upturning his own fate but also the fate of his literary hero, and that of his great grandmother, Hanna, an aspiring actor in the Yiddish theater in the Prague of 1911. This book is for anyone who has ever wanted to be an author, anyone who knows an author, anyone who is an author, recognized or not, and anyone who loves books enough to want to spend their afterlife reading forgotten classics in the great library of Oblivion. "A mesmerizing meditation on immortality, both the literary and fleshly kinds and its ultimate unattainability... like language, like summer, like love, Oblivion is irresistible."- Junot Diaz, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction "A tour de force. Oblivion is a marvel of the imagination and intellect. Hemley has . . .created a book that is a relentless page turner: funny and wise, exuberant and sad, insightful and magical, and-most wonderful of all-deeply, deeply human."-Connie May Fowler, author of How Clarissa Burden Learned to Fly "Oblivion is a deeply intelligent and strikingly honest exploration of what ultimately drives a writer to write, and the cold loneliness of the journey, and how literary success in one's lifetime is, at best, a fickle proposition. I will tell every writer I know, struggling or successful, to read this book."- Kaylie Jones, author of Lies My Mother Never Told Me: A Memoir.

The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories, Volume Five
It's the most wonderful time of the year - time for more rare ghostly tales of Yuletide terror from Victorian England! For this fifth Valancourt volume of Christmas ghost stories, editor Christopher Philippo has dug deeper than ever before, delving into the archives of Victorian-era newspapers and magazines from throughout the British Isles to find twenty-one rare texts for the Christmas season - seventeen stories and four poems - most of them never before reprinted.Featured here are gems by once-popular but now-forgotten 19th-century masters of the supernatural like Amelia Edwards, Barry Pain, and Florence Marryat, alongside contributions by totally obscure authors like James Skipp Borlase, a writer of penny dreadfuls who specialized in lurid Christmas horror stories, and Harry Grattan, who made history by writing the first ghost story recorded by Edison for the phonograph. Also included are an introduction and bonus materials, such as 19th-century news articles and advertisements related to Christmas ghosts."I endeavoured to call out; I could not utter a sound. As I gasped and panted, there stole into my nostrils a deadly, terrible, overpowering stench . . . It was the dread odour of decomposing mortality . . . I felt that I must break the spell, or die." - John Pitman, "Ejected by a Ghost""It was a coach made of dead men's bones . . . Behind the awful vehicle stood two fleshless skeletons in place of footmen, the driver was a horned and tailed fiend, and the six coal--black steeds that he drove had eyes of fire, and snorted flame from their nostrils as they tore madly along." - James Skipp Borlase, "The Wicked Lady Howard"
