The Darkness Within, the Darkness Without
The Darkness Within, the Darkness Without continues the story of Roystone, a small seaside town in the North of England and its struggle for survival. After the death of her husband, Maggie Granger, a young lawyer, is rejected by her family because of her suddenly acquired psychic ability and finds herself completely alone in the world. She moves to Roystone looking for employment. On an impulse, she attends an exhibition of three John Trentham paintings at the town museum. To everyones surprise, a ghostly shimmering apparition of John Trentham appears. But only Maggie hears his warningBeware the darkness without. Months later, now established as a reputable lawyer in the town, Maggie believes all is well. She loves this Yorkshire country life and has made new friends. Then out of the blue, she has a nightmare. She sees a woman being horribly murdered and hears her saying, Forgive me, my child. I have betrayed you. She consults a gypsy psychic. Sirisa informs Maggie that, at her birth, to keep her safe, her true identity was deliberately concealed. She tells Maggie she can see the darkness surrounding her and that someone wants to kill her. Who was murdered? Who has betrayed her? Who is Maggie Granger? And will the gypsy Rafael, a jockey who rides the fast steeplechasers and with whom she has fallen madly in love, be able to save her? Will his dog, the Maji, a black Russian wolfhound, be able to help him? The Darkness Within, the Darkness Without is a page-turner. This is the second in a series of stories by Lin Harbertson about Roystone, England. The first is Doorway Through Time. And the third will be? Do Not Go Restless into Death..
Familiar Spirits
Sometimes when the dead are laid to rest in peace, they refuse to go into that dark night. Instead, they lie in the cold earth, agitated and restless, angry about the past, conjuring up lists of wrongs to right and enemies to fright In Familiar Spirits, you will find previously untold tales of ... rainy graveyards ... musty attics ... domestic abuse ... love unending ... speaking with the dead ... vengeful ghosts ... infatuation gone wrong ... and lonely spirits. And, you will meet a mother who refuses to abandon her child ... a jealous ex ... a sailor who seeks to escape his watery grave ... and your deepest fears. Says Galaxy's Edge: Gathered in this book are a number of really excellent ghost stories. This is not a book full of friendly or gentle ghosts. The "bump in the night" for most stories is really a solid smash. The collection begins with Sarah Hans's tale of revenge by an abused and murdered woman and ends with Jean Rabe's highly original story giving a ghost dog's eye view of a murder set in one of the most fascinating locales ever, the Coon Dog graveyard in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Not a collection for the younger reader, Familiar Spirits will appeal to you with its darkness. Says Anton Cancre on CemeteryDanceOnline: "plenty of good ghastly tales" and, concerning Wren Roberts tale, "I made the mistake of reading this one while walking the dog and ended up weeping right there on the sidewalk." Includes stories from Sarah Hans, Dolores Whitt Becker, William Pack, Lynne Handy, Wren Roberts, Kate Johnson, Cathy Kern, Ric Waters, TS Rhodes, Melanie Waghorne, and Jean Rabe. What makes ghost stories give readers shivers more than any other stories? After all, vampire and werewolf and monster tales can be plenty creepy, too. Perhaps it's because we always know, deep in the back of our subconscious, that vampires and werewolves and monsters aren't real. They're fiction. But, the same isn't true for ghost stories. Almost every culture believes in ghosts and has myths and tales about them. Almost everyone has had, or personally knows someone who has had, a ghostly or supernatural experience. We believe in ghosts, so we believe in ghost stories. And that makes it so much harder to go to sleep after we've read what those familiar spirits may be up to in the midst of deepest night in the woods, down the street, and in our own homes. Magician and story-teller William Pack conceived of Familiar Spirits as an outgrowth and supplement to his spell-binding performances of magic and ghostly tales. Connecting with Writer on Demand Donald J. Bingle, they have invited a specially selected group of extremely talented writers to craft short tales and vivid manifestations to unsettle, spook, terrify, and haunt you in your dreams and in brightest day. Join with these authors to bring Familiar Spirits to life ... or, perhaps, unholy afterlife from beyond the grave. Death is only the beginning for a familiar spirit, but it may be the end for those it seeks out on the mortal plane.

The Ghost Stories of M.r. James
The Ghost Stories of M.R. James collects the tales that best illustrate the author's quiet mastery of the ghost story form. Running through each of these stories is a slowly escalating sense of unease and dread, which ultimately shifts into the wildly uncanny. James' characters exist in a world of ancient objects whose atrocious histories begin to repeat when they are disturbed, and the blinkered repression common to James' narratives only amplifies the shock of the spectral appearance.

The King in Yellow
Time is a flat circle in this beautiful gift edition of the cult classic work of weird fiction and supernatural horror that inspired H.P. Lovecraft and HBO's True Detective "...For we do not know what beasts the night dreams when its hours grow too long for even God to be awake." - Attributed to Hildred Castaigne, narrator of "The Repairer of Reputations." The weird tales in this slim volume are all linked by a play, the second act of which reveals truths so terrible and beautiful that it drives all who read it to despair: The King in Yellow. I cannot forget Carcosa where black stars hang in the heavens; where the shadows of men's thoughts lengthen in the afternoon . . . I pray God will curse the writer, as the writer has cursed the world with this beautiful, stupendous creation, terrible in its simplicity, irresistible in its truth-a world which now trembles before the King in Yellow. These four macabre, uncanny, and unsettling stories are some of the most thrilling ever written in the field of weird fiction, exploring themes of the supernatural, spirituality, and the potentially corrosive influence of belief in the afterlife. Since their first publication in 1895, they have become a cult classic, influencing everyone from the renowned master of cosmic horror, H.P Lovecraft, to the creators of HBO's True Detective.

Her landlord, Fionnlagh Maccaillin, is an ex-army man with obvious and not so obvious injuries. Maggie, who runs the village shop, is also an enigma, startling her with her strange 'insights'. All four are unable to let go. Their lives entwining in mysterious ways, can they help each other to move on or will they always belong to the ghosts that haunt them?
Curious, if True
Though she began her literary career as a social realist working in the vein of her mentor Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell took a mid-career turn into the realm of supernatural writing. Curious, If True brings together a collection of Gaskell's most spine-chilling Victorian tales of horror and suspense. It's a must-read for fans of gothic mysteries.
The Fall of the House of Cabal
Johannes Cabal, a necromancer of some little infamy, has come into possession of a vital clue that may lead him to his ultimate goal: a cure for death. The path is vague, however, and certainly treacherous as it takes him into strange territories that, quite literally, no one has ever seen before. The task is too dangerous to venture upon alone, so he must seek assistance, comrades for the coming travails. So assisted--ably and otherwise--by his vampiric brother, Horst, and by the kindly accompaniment of a criminologist and a devil, he will encounter ruins and diableries, mystery and murder, the depths of the lowest pit and a city of horrors. London, to be exact. Yet even though Cabal has risked such peril believing he understands the dangers he faces, he is still underestimating them. He is walking into a trap of such arcane complexity that even the one who drew him there has no idea of its true terrors. As the snare closes slowly and subtly around them, it may be that there will be no survivors at all. The Fall of the House of Cabal is the fifth book in Jonathan L. Howard's acclaimed Johannes Cabal series.

The Dentist Chair
The Dentist Chair is a compelling fictional novel about Dr. Harry James Maddox, once a highly respected and trusted pillar of the community. The Valley, as its residents call it, is snuggled deep within the basin of Southern California and is a pretentious small and tight knit community. If there ever was a city that could be classified as Utopia, it was Montgomery Valley. Outsiders are rarely accepted but 'The Valley' welcomed Dr. Maddox and his wife, Katrina, with open arms. They were an attractive couple, he was tall, lean and extremely handsome and Katrina was beautiful in her own right. Their daughters, Beverly and Angela, by virtue of their birthright were considered true Montgomerians and were expected to marry and remain safe and snug in this cozy environment. Dr. Edward Jones, a native Montgomerian retired after forty years of practicing dentistry leaving a patient base of one hundred to Dr. Maddox. Within five years he grew his patient base to over three hundred and fifty. His life could not have been more perfect or happy until he lost focus bringing shame upon his family, his patients, and his community. His failure to distinguish between right and wrong, between what was moral and immoral, what was professional and unprofessional brought a community to its knees, creating chaos, doubt, mistrust, disgust and betrayal. There were lies, deceit and moments of grandeur leading to the unexpected. This once perfect community of Montgomery Valley will forever be soiled by the actions of only one man.
Haunted Hannibal
After living in Rockcliffe Mansion, where the haunted hallways were a rite of passage for countless Hannibalian youth, Ken and Lisa Marks learned firsthand that Hannibal, Missouri, is indeed haunted. Even skeptics will find it hard to resist the marvelously strange history of the limestone cave made famous in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer where the real-life, macabre Dr. McDowell experimented with his own daughter's corpse. Stories of the town's notorious red-light district and Hannibal's larger-than-life lumber barons provide even more spine-tingling evidence of the haunting of America's Hometown.

Lonely Haunts
This volume brings together two classic ghost story collections. The first, Six Ghost Stories by Sir Thomas Graham Jackson (1919) is an antiquarian ghost story delight in the vein of M. R. James. These are fully developed tales of ordinary lives into which the supernatural creeps. The second, Mrs. H. D. Everett's The Death Mask and Other Ghosts (1920), is a fun and varied collection of fourteen shorter ghost stories, with family haunts, communication from the other side, malevolent curses, and more. These are an excellent addition to the ghost story bookshelf.
Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans
"He struck a match to look at his watch. In the flare of the light they saw a young woman just at Pitot's elbow--a young woman dressed all in black, with pale gold hair, and a baby sleeping on her shoulder. She glided to the edge of the bridge and stepped noiselessly off into the black waters."--from Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans Ghosts are said to wander along the rooftops above New Orleans' Royal Street, the dead allegedly sing sacred songs in St. Louis Cathedral, and the graveyard tomb of a wealthy madam reportedly glows bright red at night. Local lore about such supernatural sightings, as curated by Jeanne deLavigne in her classic Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans, finds the phantoms of bitter lovers, vengeful slaves, and menacing gypsies haunting nearly every corner of the city, from the streets of the French Quarter to Garden District mansions. Originally printed in 1944, all forty ghost stories and the macabre etchings of New Orleans artist Charles Richards appear in this new edition. Drawing largely on popular legend dating back to the 1800s, deLavigne provides vivid details of old New Orleans with a cast of spirits that represent the ethnic m矇lange of the city set amid period homes, historic neighborhoods, and forgotten taverns. Combining folklore, newspaper accounts, and deLavigne's own voice, these phantasmal tales range from the tragic--brothers, lost at sea as children, haunt a chapel on Thomas Street in search of their mother--to graphic depictions of torture, mutilation, and death. Folklorist and foreword contributor Frank A. de Caro places the writer and her work in context for modern readers. He uncovers new information about deLavigne's life and describes her book's pervasive lingering influence on the Crescent City's culture today.
Collected Ghost Stories
'I was conscious of a most horrible smell of mould, and of a cold kind of face pressed against my own...' Considered by many to be the most terrifying writer in English, M. R. James was an eminent scholar who spent his entire adult life in the academic surroundings of Eton and Cambridge. His classic supernatural tales draw on the terrors of the everyday, in which documents and objects unleash terrible forces, often in closed rooms and night-time settings where imagination runs riot. Lonely country houses, remote inns, ancient churches or the manuscript collections of great libraries provide settings for unbearable menace, from creatures seeking retribution and harm. These stories have lost none of their power to unsettle and disturb. This edition presents all of James's published ghost stories, including the unforgettable 'Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad' and 'Casting the Runes', and an appendix of James's writings on the ghost story. Darryl Jones's introduction and notes provide a fascinating insight into James's background and his mastery of the genre he made his own.

The Woman in Black
The classic ghost story from the author of The Mist in the Mirror a chilling tale about a menacing spectre haunting a small English town. Arthur Kipps is an up-and-coming London solicitor who is sent to Crythin Gifford--a faraway town in the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway--to attend the funeral and settle the affairs of a client, Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. Mrs. Drablow's house stands at the end of the causeway, wreathed in fog and mystery, but Kipps is unaware of the tragic secrets that lie hidden behind its sheltered windows. The routine business trip he anticipated quickly takes a horrifying turn when he finds himself haunted by a series of mysterious sounds and images--a rocking chair in a deserted nursery, the eerie sound of a pony and trap, a child's scream in the fog, and, most terrifying of all, a ghostly woman dressed all in black. Psychologically terrifying and deliciously eerie, The Woman in Black is a remarkable thriller of the first rate. The basis for the major motion picture starring Daniel Radcliffe.
