The Healers Chronicles
Walking down the highway - barefoot, feverish, and in only a nightgown. At least the storm had quit. Now if I could get my chattering teeth to stop, it would help - maybe. Up ahead, I see some stopped cars. Some have their lights on. Maybe I can get help. Too bad I can't travel any faster the way I am. That's odd. Nobody in them. Lights on, but no one at home. Except for a crying baby. And no one answers my calls either. No, I can't leave her alone. At least there's a shawl they left with her and her blankets. So she and I are on the road again. Toward the next town, which is just a couple of painful miles ahead. Me and the baby have something else in common besides my barefoot walking and feeling alone... Noner of us remember what happened to get us here. This anthology contains: - The Healers Chronicles: Birthdays - 01 by S. H. Marpel- The Healers Chronicles: Origins- Lazurai Homecoming by J. R. Marpel Excerpt: I woke up not remembering much of how I got here, where I was, or who I used to be. There were two babies, one on each side of me, who were sleeping soundly. All of us in a big bed that was soft and warm. My hair and white muslin nightgown were drenched. Like I'd been out in the rain with them. Even soaked the sheets a bit. But the babies were both dry. I could hardly move from where I was, since the top sheet and quilted patchwork comforter had been tucked in around all of us so tight.

Even after she'd brought them back to life once or twice or more. But under the care of a Lazurai healer, body death is extremely rare.Sure, they both had serious wounds when they came in. But those had all been patched. And there were only faint lines now where the jagged cuts had been repaired. In time, there wouldn't even be any scars to show. The surgery here was expert.Yet this was the third time both of us had to come in and stop the slide. And once we did, it left us both exhausted. Three Ghost Stories
This classic shory story collection by Charles Dickens contains a trio of thrilling ghost stories consisting of The Signal-Man, The Haunted-House, and The Trial For Murder. The following is an excerpt from The Signal-Man: 'Halloa! Below there!'When he heard a voice thus calling to him, he was standing at the door of his box, with a flag in his hand, furled round its short pole. One would have thought, considering the nature of the ground, that he could not have doubted from what quarter the voice came; but instead of looking up to where I stood on the top of the steep cutting nearly over his head, he turned himself about, and looked down the Line. There was something remarkable in his manner of doing so, though I could not have said for my life what. But I know it was remarkable enough to attract my notice, even though his figure was foreshortened and shadowed, down in the deep trench, and mine was high above him, so steeped in the glow of an angry sunset, that I had shaded my eyes with my hand before I saw him at all.
Sorcerie
From the author of The Night Sitter and Here Lurk Monsters, a harrowing folk-horror thriller about a young, grieving couple who flee the UK mainland for a small rugged British Isle in the middle of the Irish Sea. Be careful what you wish for. Something might be listening. . . Following a failed pregnancy, Oliver and Abby learn they will never be able to bear children of their own. Heartbroken, their marriage in decay, the couple exhaust the last of their savings and move house from London to a tiny village on the remote Isle of Man for a fresh start. Settling into a small stone cottage beside a dark woods overlooking a gray sea, their best of intentions are only too quickly dashed by cold, suffocating fog, thrashing wind and rain, and the strange folkloric traditions of the villagers themselves, including a congregation of old rusted horseshoes arranged in a crude pattern of concentric circles on their front door to greet them and mysterious runic carvings on the stone walls of their cellar. And this is only the beginning of their nightmare. For there is an unseen resident inside the stone walls of this small stone cottage beside these dark woods and this gray sea. Something moving about in its darkest corners and deepest crevices. Something that has been waiting. Patiently. An ancient evil thing. . . A darkly inventive spin on UK folklore, Sorcerie is a compulsive page turner. Mesmerizing, genuinely eerie, and ultimately terrifying. A master stroke of horror.

Silent Voices
Driving down a rocky road I saw the overgrown grass, weeds, and poison ivy overtaking the outer perimeter of the bushes. The smell of mildew permeated the air, along with the stench of animals killed by cars coming up from the ground along this dirt road. I could see the sadness on the faces in the cars behind me; I could feel the pain and sorrow. As I looked inside the cars and saw the faces of the drivers, I began to wonder what they were thinking, their thoughts and feelings as they traveled down life's highway, maybe for the very last time. What stories lay behind the faces behind the wheel of each oncoming car? What stories were hidden? Whose voices are now silenced?

In Still Rooms
In Still Rooms is more than a haunted house novel--a strange hybrid drawing its aesthetic equally from ancient Greek drama, ecopoetics, and the Gothic tradition. Set in an old house in rural East Tennessee, three generations of a Greek-American family mourn the loss of a matriarch who reveals herself to each of them uniquely. Regardless of the family's comings and goings, the reader remains always in the house. In this house, religion, mythology, and superstition all rule equally. In this house, saints speak to mothers from their plaques on the wall; ancient deities manifest in the minds of children; a Chorus of those who have previously died there address the reader directly; and ultimately, the house itself begins to speak.

Donna Fitzpatrick runs a surrogacy agency, where ghosts can briefly possess volunteers in order to enjoy carnal pleasures. She's also working herself into an early grave. But that's no big deal because death is no worse than puberty. That's particularly evident in Donna's twin, Kyle, a self-absorbed roustabout who spends most of his time high on sage. There's just one small problem: there isn't a single ghost in Jackson Manor. THE PERFECTLY FINE HOUSE.
Double Acting
13-year-old Mike Saunders, African-American, and raised by his novel-writing dad in the nice suburban environment of Thousand Oaks, California, is dismayed when his father's uncertain income forces a move to a tumbledown shack in the desolate sweltering desert of Coyote Valley, Arizona. The property, such as it is -- electricity unreliable, and only a windmill for water -- was left to Mike's dad by Mike's great-uncle, who died at the age of 107 after spending most of his life searching for a ton of gold bars stolen in a train robbery in 1897 and reputedly still buried somewhere near the robbery site. Except for its rusty narrow-gauge track, the Coyote Valley And Codyville railroad, abandoned in 1917, has almost been forgotten, along with the ghost town of Codyville somewhere up in the mountains. But Mike, though a model-railroader having an interest in real steam trains, is more concerned upon his arrival to find that the only potential friends within twenty miles are Carson, 12, a smart-ass "gamer" and Little Coyote, 13, an enormously fat Apache boy who lives in a shack no better than Mike's at what had once been a water stop on the abandoned railroad. Mike isn't sure he wants to befriend either one. But, as the story unfolds, revealing desert legend and lore, crusty old wild west characters, an adventure in an abandoned mine, a steam locomotive resurrected, and an encounter with gun-toting ghosts, Mike learns that true friends come in all colors and sizes, and souls aren't judged by BMI, or how much wealth one accumulates while breathing the air of this earth.

The Case of the Walkaway Diner Redoux
If I didn't rescue him soon, I'd be worse than dead. Just another ghost. Again.But... forever, this time.Because he saved me once, and now it was my turn."Still waiting for him to show up?" Molly refilled my coffee without asking."How do you figure I'm waiting for anyone?" I frowned, puzzled how she knew."Because the way you're nursing that pie ala mode says you care more for what's coming in that door than you do for how that ice cream melts your pie to slush."I smiled at this and tried to spoon up some of the now-gooey mess to my mouth. "That obvious, Molly?""As obvious as my name tag. There's just your one seat in here where you can see who's coming in without them noticing you right off. So you can drop your eyeballs back to that pie real quick if they do."Molly pulled out a cloth from under the counter and pretended to clean a phantom spill. "Besides, I've seen other gals like you in that seat before. Every week. Same place, same time. Hoping when you come in, disappointed when you leave."She then looked me in the eye."But don't worry none. He'll be along presently. Comes every week, just about now."Excerpt: We shimmered into place right outside a diner. Looked like L.A. because of all the asphalt, cement, and palm trees. The diner had a lot of glass and chrome. And it was decorated for Christmas with plastic wreaths and synthetic ribbons. The sky overhead was clear, with a tinge of smog between us, the sun, and the cloudless sky. Still a West Coast idea of what passed for morning out here.Carol turned to me and smiled, then wrapped her arms around me to hug me in a bear grip that showed her relief and thankfulness. Not uncomfortable, though. This was the old Carol I knew better. She let up and pushed back to look at me, her arms on my shoulders."It's been so long, Mary. You look great." Carol's smile was back, and the tenseness had dropped out of her voice.I had to smile in return. "It's good to see you, too. And thanks. Now, what is going on? What's this all about?"A slight frown crossed her forehead. "Now you and I are safe here. The others, well, not so much. Did you get through those books and the briefing file?"I nodded. "Just barely.""I wish you'd had more time, but no one has that luxury anymore. Thing's are unraveling.""How's that?""You saw your old ship?""Sent to salvage, it said, Before John could rescue me."Carol nodded. "That's the problem with most of the Ghost Hunter network. Every since John decided not to join. In fact, he never moved to that farm we all know and love."I was speechless, even though my jaw was open - nothing was coming out. So I closed it."Wait - how did that happen?"Carol hiked a thumb over her shoulder at that diner. "Since he was trapped in there."Scroll Up and Get Your Copy Now.

The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of A. C. Benson
Tales of ghosts and horrors from a renowned literary academicArthur Christopher Benson was born in 1862 one of six children fathered by Edward White Benson, an Archbishop of Canterbury. A. C. Benson (as he is usually known) was an academic who became master of Magdalene College, Cambridge and is today possibly best remembered for writing the stirring lyrics to the British patriotic song 'Land of Hope and Glory' which is part of Elgar's 'Pomp and Circumstance March No 1'. Most of the Benson family were talented, but three brothers, Arthur Christopher, Edward Frederic (E. F.) and Robert Hugh (R. H.) became especially notable in the world of supernatural fiction. There can be little doubt that the literary laurels go to E. F. Benson whose output of supernatural fiction was particularly prolific, although he is also remembered as the writer of many other works including the humorous 'Mapp and Lucia' stories of English middle class 'one-upmanship'. Nevertheless, the fiction of the weird and ghostly penned by the other Benson brothers will appeal to all aficionados of the golden age of the genre. Many of the stories written by A. C. Benson are moral allegories, although 'Basil Netherby' has been judged to be of the highest standard among horror stories despite its comparative obscurity. In the past the supernatural stories of A. C. and R. H. Benson have possibly been neglected, underrated or selectively combined to form single volumes, but Leonaur now offers collections of stories by each author separately as they undoubtedly merit.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Hugh Walpole-Volume 1
The first volume of the works of a literary master of strange fictionSir Hugh Walpole was one of the most popular and prolific British authors of the first half of the 20th century. After the publication of his first novel, 'The Wooden Horse', in 1909 he produced one significant work each year including the acclaimed 'Herries' series. Born in New Zealand in 1884, the son of an Anglican clergyman, Walpole was committed to becoming a writer and encouraged in his ambition by Henry James and Arnold Bennett. A. C. Benson was also a mentor and early influence upon his writing. Despite his acknowledged talent as a storyteller, Walpole's work has been largely ignored since his death in 1941, in part because he was savagely lampooned by Somerset Maugham's fictional characterisation of him in 'Cakes & Ale'. Walpole, in keeping with many of his contemporaries, wrote in several genres of fiction and among his thirty-six novels, five volumes of short stories and two plays are historical, juvenile and even detective stories. His associations with A. C. Benson, Henry James, H. G. Wells and the fact that Horace Walpole (author of the first gothic novel, 'The Castle of Otranto') and Richard Harris Barham (author of the 'Ingoldsby Legends') were both among his ancestors surely stimulated his taste for gothic and macabre fiction. In fact, during the 1930s Walpole edited two well received anthologies of 'creepy stories' in which some of his own material appeared. His own literary excursions into the world of the ghostly and bizarre, which remain highly regarded by aficionados of supernatural fiction, include several novels and a substantial number of short stories all of which are included in this three volume Leonaur collected edition.Included in this first volume are the novel 'The Old Ladies' and fifteen short stories of the strange and unusual including 'The White Cat', 'Lizzie Rand', 'Mrs. Porter and Miss Allen', 'The Tiger' and 'The Twisted Inn'.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Mountain Deviltry
Mountain Deviltry takes, as its canvas, the Blue Mountains region of NSW with its sleepy villages, its colourful past and, especially, its quirky populace, who operate in the glare of the tourist-trap workaday routine that funds the region, as well as in the shadows of their own private worlds. The various villages are an eclectic mix of the retired, the unemployed, the hardscrabble and the New Age: it's neither Western Sydney nor the Dubbo Plains but both areas wash up onto its shores and leave their traces. The mystery of the Bush is never far away either, often dangerous and veiled in the perpetual mists - into this terrain who wouldn't expect to meet a ghost or two? Quite apart from spectres, there are other horrors of an all-too-human sort that exist alongside them, rubbing uncomfortably against the flash and spectacle laid on for the tourists: homelessness, poverty and addiction. These opposing worlds meet and are examined in a second-hand bookshop, the owner of which values his privacy as much as his books (and his cat), and are investigated by him and his eccentric friends in an effort to bring peace and rest to those "Beyond the Veil", as well as to those living people they've left behind.

Sir Edmund Orme (1891)
This early work by Henry James was originally published in 1891 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. Henry James was born in New York City in 1843. One of thirteen children, James had an unorthodox early education, switching between schools, private tutors and private reading.. James published his first story, 'A Tragedy of Error', in the Continental Monthly in 1864, when he was twenty years old. In 1876, he emigrated to London, where he remained for the vast majority of the rest of his life, becoming a British citizen in 1915. From this point on, he was a hugely prolific author, eventually producing twenty novels and more than a hundred short stories and novellas, as well as literary criticism, plays and travelogues. Amongst James's most famous works are The Europeans (1878), Daisy Miller (1878), Washington Square (1880), The Bostonians (1886), and one of the most famous ghost stories of all time, The Turn of the Screw (1898). We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
